Cain and Abel-New Living Translation

Verses 1 and 2

Now Adam had sexual relations with his wife, Eve, and she became pregnant. When she gave birth to Cain, she said, "With the LORD's help, I have produced a man!" Later she gave birth to hod brother and named him Abel.

My thoughts: Weird thing to call a baby boy a man doesn't you think?

Verses 3, 4, 5

When they grew up, Abel became a shepherd, while Cain cultivated the ground. When it was time for the harvest, Cain presented some of his crops as a gift to the LORD. Abel also brought a gift--the best portions of the firstborn lambs from his flock. The LORD accepted Abel and his gift, but he did not accept Cain and his gift. This made Cain very angry, and he looked dejected.

My thoughts: I like the added detail "when they grew up" so now they are men. Abel is now a shepherd, good job. Cain is pretty much a farmer. That is also a good job. There is nothing wrong with either job BUT I would prefer accepting Cain's gift because I don't like the idea of sacrificing a lamb. To me that isn't an acceptable gift but then again. I'm not God. This is one example of how he's not really a good god to me. Cain worked hard for his crops just like how Abel worked hard to raise his flock. I can understand why Cain was angry at God for not being accepted.

Verses 6 and 7

"Why are you so angry?" the LORD asked Cain. "Why do you look so dejected? You will be accepted if you do what is right. But if you refuse to do what is right, then watch out! Sin is crouching at the door, eager to control you. But you must subdue it and be its master."

My thoughts: Dejected means feeling depressed, disheartened, or low-spirited. For example, you might feel dejected after losing a game or not getting a job. I think it's understandable why Cain feel depressed. He wasn't accepted by God. Would you feel depressed if God didn't accept you? This is literally narcissism. A narcissist is someone who has narcissistic personality disorder (NPD), a mental health condition that involves an exaggerated sense of self-importance. Narcissists may also have difficulty relating to others. Of course He has difficulty relating to others. Because He is God!!!

Signs of NPD

Grandiose sense of self-importance: They may believe they are unique or "special" and only understood by other special people.

Lack of empathy: They may be unwilling or unable to understand or care about the feelings of others. (As we see God with Cain).

Sense of entitlement: They may believe they are superior to others and deserve special treatment.

Manipulative behavior: They may try to please others to get what they want.

Preoccupation with power, beauty, or success: They may be preoccupied with their own achievements and talents.

Need for admiration: They may have an excessive need for attention and want people to admire them.

Other characteristics

They may be easily upset by criticism

They may be envious of others or believe that others envious of them.

They may be very superficial.

They may have impaired relationships.

I will bring these things up later on too in other stories because there are more examples like these.

If you or someone you know are experiencing depression, call 988 or talk to a trusted friend. You are not alone. Also, I dated a narcissist so I can understand Narcissistic abuse by a boyfriend.

Verse 8

One day Cain suggested to his brother, "Let's go out into the fields." And while they were in the field, Cain attacked his brother, Abel, and killed him.

verse 9

Afterward the LORD asked Cain, "Where is your brother? Where is Abel? "I don't know." Cain responded. "Am I my brother's guardian?"

My thoughts: guardian instead of keeper. The original sin because of Adam and Eve and now the first murder by Cain to Abel.

Verses 10, 11, 12

But the LORD said, "What have you done? Listen! Your brother's blood cries out to me from the ground! Now you are cursed and banished from the ground, which has swallowed your brother's blood. No longer will the ground yield good crops for you, no matter how hard you work! From now on you will be a homeless wanderer on the earth."

My thoughts: How can blood cry out? And why is that how God knows what Cain has done? That doesn't make sense. Now Cain is cursed and banished and will be homeless. I guess God haven't been mean enough to Cain, he has to be plan right cruel, plus his crops he works hard for are now not going to be good anymore. He was a hard worker and never get any appreciation for it. This is not an example of a good God.

Verses 13 and 14

Cain replied to the LORD, "My punishment is too great for me to bear! You have banished me from the land and from your presence; you have made me a homeless wanderer. Anyone who finds me will kill me!"

My thoughts: I think God choose who he wants to be in his presence, and he does turn his back on the ones that he doesn't accept. He never accepted Cain and now he finally decided to kick him out. This is "free will".

Verses 15 and 16

The LORD replied, "No, for I will give you a sevenfold punishment to anyone who kills you." Then the LORD put a mark on Cain to warn anyone who might try to kill him. So, Cain left the LORD's presence and settled in the land of Nod, east of Eden.

My thoughts: This is what I believe.
