Snap

As I drive to work the next morning I continue to replay our conversation for the umpteenth time in my head, completely dissecting it. I stayed up almost all night last night thinking of things I should have said and pointed out but only frustrated myself even more. At one point I almost texted him telling him he was being insecure and can't be mad at me. Everything I did I did for him so he should really cut me some slack. But as I was typing it out I realized he needed to figure that out himself so I turned my phone off and continued to fume. I finally forced myself to turn my brain off and fall asleep sometime around four. When my alarm went off at seven I texted Annabeth and Tinsley to tell them to not bother coming in until noon. Now it's five til and I see both of their cars already in the lot when I pull up.

When I yank the door to the winery open I hear Tinsley's distinctive high-pitched voice coming from the office and I find her standing behind Annabeth, both looking at her computer.

"Oh it's beautiful Annabeth, I can't believe you found such a pretty dress like that in Hollis," Tinsley says as her eyes run over an image of Annabeth's gown that she pulled up online.

I decide to interrupt before Annabeth can go into excruciating detail, "Good mornin' or I guess afternoon." They both spin around to face me and Tinsley's smile reaches ear to ear. She dashes over to me and pulls me in for a hug, "Oh my goodness I have missed you!" She squeezes me for a few more moments before pulling back and saying, "I am so glad you called me to come back here. I love the changes you've made."

I smile to her. If there was a day I needed a bright spirit like Tinsley around it would be today.

"I've missed ya too which is why I had to hire you back!" I tell her and her eyes light up the small office space. She is still stick thin with long straight blonde hair and her neon pink sweater matches her rosy cheeks. She looks back to Annabeth and says, "We were just lookin' at everything she's planned for her weddin'. Looks like it's gonna be one hell of an event!"

I don't have the patience to allow Annabeth's wedding to consume the day so I simply nod and reply, "Should be fabulous. Shall I show you the new set up we have out there?"

She claps her hands together while Annabeth deflates in her office chair. I'm sure she wanted to walk Tinsley through her venue, food and cake choices as well but I just can't stomach all the wedding hoopla right now.

Tinsley follows behind me back into the main seating area and she runs her hands over all of the new furniture. She comments on the paint and new stain for the bar before picking up the new bottles of wine we have on display.

"It's weird to not have the Penderghast labels ain't it?" She says as she holds a Merlot up to me. I nod, "It's weirder to be in the office all of the time instead of hanging out at the hostess stand. Before I had only ever been back there a handful of times.

"Yeah it will take a minute to get used to that's for sure," she says as her eyes take in the new but familiar atmosphere. I want to be a good boss and I want Tinsley to enjoy working for me as much as she did with the Penderghasts. I let her have free reign over how she wants to set up the hostess area since she has more experience than I do. I drop a box on top of one of the pub tables and use my car key to open it up. Inside are the new menus so I wave Tinsley over to show her. I look around for Annabeth but I guess she decided to stay back in the office. Tinsley plucks the first sheet of cream paper from the box and says, "Beautiful Sawyer. Really classes up the joint."

I run my eyes down the wine list that's typed out in scarlet cursive handwriting and then grab the second sheet to look over the charcuterie board options. She runs a bright red nail down the menu and says, "Oh I like that you added olives and pickles to the options."

I tried to keep the food relatively simple since we are not equipped with a full-size kitchen. She finds the box of plastic sleeves and starts working on putting the menu pages together. I leave her at the pub table and walk back to the office to find Annabeth. When I come into the office I see she has a photographer's website pulled up and I am annoyed she's in here doing wedding stuff instead of helping us out there.

"Tinsley has the new menus. They turned out really chic," I tell her as I stand in the doorway and she only gives me an "Umhmm," in response.

"As soon as she's done with the menus I thought we could roll silverware and get the P.O.S stations ready to go."

"Sounds good," she says with her eyes still locked on the pictures of other people's weddings.

"Turns out Ryan is the father of Whitney's baby," I say as a joke but not even this deters her. All she says is, "Yeah I'll be right out." Annoyed I shut the light to the office off and that finally gets her attention, "Hey I need that on!" She turns to face me and I flick the switch back on, "Yeah well I need you out there helping me and Tinsley. She's only here for a couple of hours so I gotta make the most of it since she won't be back until we open."

She shakes her head and says, "If we only have her for a few hours why did ya have us come in late? Doesn't seem productive." She says it with enough attitude that I am ready to snap.

"Because I was running late. And I never know what time you'll stroll in so I didn't think I could count on you to let her in until I got here," I say back.

She lets out a light laugh and replies, "Sawyer, I've only been late like five times. If it was such a big deal to have Tinsley here for a full day you coulda told me and I would have been here."

I roll my eyes, "You're right, you've been so dependable lately why did I not think I could count on you."

She suddenly stands from her chair and today she's in leggings and a long tunic that hides her bump well. She folds her arms in front of her and snaps, "What is your problem today? You came in here in a foul mood."

"I'm just tired of doing everything with everyone else in mind and I get no consideration from anyone okay?" I bark out at her but she still just looks at me with her big hazel doe eyes. I shrug in annoyance and add, "Can you just be here, fully here until after the opening? Do wedding stuff on your own time?"

Taken back she whines, "Sure. I didn't know my wedding was such a disturbance."

"It's not, I just need all hands on deck right now. Focused and ready to have a successful grand opening. This party is my wedding Annabeth. I've been planning this for months, everyone I know is going to be here, my parents have a lot riding on this. It's just a really big deal."

She must finally get it because her shoulders relax and her scowl fades. I know I am taking my frustration with Ryan out on her but I'm kind of glad I did. It might be a good thing that I had to snap at her to get her focused. She's been a roller coaster with this wedding and I don't want to hear about it for the next three days. I may have just achieved that.

"Alright, what do you want me to do?" She asks and the tension between us has been lifted. I glance behind me before saying, "We need to test the P.O.S system. They've already been programmed and installed with everything I just want to be familiar with it."

She nods, "Okay then let's go do that then." She strides straight out of the office and I reluctantly follow. I can't shake this knot in my chest and I know it won't subside until I talk with Ryan. I want to just go to him and have it out so we can get back to normal but I know he won't be home until at least five o'clock. I glance down at my watch and see I still have three hours to focus on anything else. I take my own advice and focus on what is of immediate importance and it's getting this winery ready to open in three days. I swallow my annoyance with everyone down and walk back out to the bar where A.B is waiting for me.
