Charity

Last night was miserable. Ryan will agree.

After he got me back to his place I proceeded to throw up all the whiskey and champagne I had drank until about three in the morning. Ryan went back and forth from holding my hair and rubbing my back to scolding me about drinking hard liquor while not eating anything at the party. While I wasn't ralphing, I for some reason found it appropriate to cry about Gus's situation and Jackson not being the father of Whitney's baby into Ryan's chest. At three-thirty in the morning, Ryan force-fed me eggs and toast because he refused to give in to my demand to order pizza and by four he was carrying me up the stairs and dumping me into his bed.

Apparently, I tried to get frisky but by four-thirty, I was sound asleep in his bed snoring loudly enough to make the neighbor's dog start barking. So when I managed to wake up at noon today I knew Ryan was not going to be too thrilled about all the events of last night. I was not a fun drunk.

I stood in his bathroom and brushed my teeth for what felt like ten minutes and then stood under boiling hot water for a solid half-hour. I rifled around in his dresser drawers to find a pair of sweats and a t-shirt and by 12:30 I was finally making my way down the stairs. I hear voices coming out of the kitchen and once I round the corner I see Aurora sitting at the white wooden kitchen table with Ryan at the stove and Austin standing next to the fridge. Austin is the first to see me and he immediately reaches over and presses the power button on the blender. My hands fly up to my ears and he smiles as he blends up his smoothy mixture. Ryan catches Austin's stare and spins to face me but the loud blades crushing the ice fills the kitchen so he can't say anything. When he finally powers down the blender I mouth, "Asshole."

Ryan comes around the island and hands me a glass of orange juice and two aspirins. I look to his tired green eyes and ask, "How much do you hate me?" I pop the two pills into my mouth and wince at the flavors of toothpaste and orange juice swirling together in my mouth.

"Hate is too strong of a word. Aggravated if anything," he says with a smile and then kisses me on the forehead. I saunter over to the kitchen table and even the sound of the chair dragging on the wood floor makes me wince.

"So Ryan was just sayin' you're a whiskey drinker now," Austin says with a grin and I shake my head at him.

"Hey, Aurora was Lola James last night so I was...an alternate version of Sawyer Sweeney. One that drinks whiskey and enjoys the company of Theo and Rory," I reply and I take another drink of the juice.

Aurora nods, "I see what you meant by braggy. I have never heard so many tales of two persons' travel experiences in my life. This assignment is going to be more mentally draining than I thought." Ryan comes over and places bowls of pasta in front of Aurora and me. The smell of garlic makes my stomach turn but Ryan's stern stare tells me to eat it.

Austin and Ryan grab their own bowls and join us at the table. Austin looks to me after he sits and says, "It sounds like last night didn't go fully as planned. That Rory was a bit too into you and not as into Lola."

I shake my head, "Theo gravitated toward her so Rory's attention landed on me."

"We might need to all go out together again Sawyer. I don't know how to make it so Rory and I are alone," Aurora says and my brain isn't awake enough to try and talk about all of this yet. "Theo also never gave me a way of contacting him so it's a waiting game for one of them to call us."

I finish chewing a small bite of noodles and reply, "I have both of their numbers. We can be progressive women and call them you know?"

Ryan finally looks up from his bowl and asks me, "So you're fine to continue this then?"

Aurora cuts me off before I can answer, "We need you, Sawyer. You're kind of a vital part of this undercover mission right now."

"I'm willing to play along to a point. Rory gets a bit too cozy too quickly so I need to maintain some boundaries," I reply and from the look on Ryan's face he wants me to drop this case but the look on Aurora's says she'll kill me if I do.

"We need to think of a scenario that you can call the guys to come along but it's not a private place where Rory thinks he can get Sawyer alone like that," Austin says and Aurora nods in agreement.

"We are right around the holidays so I know there are other events going on. Is there something else that they'll be going to?" Aurora asks and I look to Austin. He looks up to the ceiling as he thinks but Austin hasn't been around Hollis for the holidays in years so I know he's not quite in touch will all the going ons.

Before I am able to come up with any ideas I hear the shrill ring of my cellphone coming from the living room. I push myself away from the table and jog to go answer it. As soon as I pluck it from the coffee table I see Theo's name and shout to Aurora to come over to me. I answer as soon as she rounds the corner.

"Theo Rigsby," I say flirtatiously and Aurora gives me the thumbs up.

"Sawyer Sweeney. How is my favorite Hollis girl this morning?" He asks and Aurora comes to stand right next to me so she can hear.

"About as good as one can be after a Hemming party," I reply and he gives a light laugh at the other end.

"Sorry about having to run off like that. I wasn't particularly in the mood to deal with the dramatics of Molly Hamilton," he says and I glance to Aurora before replying, "I was also sad to see Rory dash off. You both just left us when things were gettin' good." She gives me the thumbs up again.

"Yes, I thought so too which is why I am calling. My mother was going to drag my sister and I to the Nutcracker ballet in Sommerville this evening but now apparently they are a bit under the weather to venture out so late. So, she told me I could have the tickets and take some pretty ladies if I'd like."

Aurora is nodding her head vigorously and I stammer out, "Yeah! Wow, the ballet tonight?"

"If you and Lola are available I could send a car to pick you ladies up to meet Rory and me for drinks beforehand," he offers.

"That would be divine," I reply, nearly gagging on my own words. "What time shall Lola and I be expecting a car?" I ask.

"Let's say five-thirty?"

"We'll be ready," I answer and Aurora is clutching onto the wrist of my hand that holds the phone.

"See ya soon then." Theo hangs up and Aurora looks ecstatic. The last thing I want to do is drink any more alcohol but I couldn't say no with her standing inches away from me.

"That is perfect!" Aurora says as I toss my phone on the couch. Ryan and Austin are now standing in the doorway and Austin asks, "What'd he want?"

I look to Ryan and answer, "They want to take us to the ballet in Sommerville tonight. A car is picking us up at five-thirty."

"If you're going to take drugs to enjoy anything it would be a ballet," Austin says and I roll my eyes at him.

"It would be hard to hear anything if we have you guys mic'd up for the ballet. I don't imagine there will be much talking once you are inside the theater," Ryan says.

"They are taking us to drinks first so if you want to be close in a van you can listen in while we are there. But you're right, after that it would probably be pointless," Aurora tells him and Austin nods.

"Are you sure you're up for going out again tonight Sawyer? You had a rough night last night." Ryan asks me with a concerned voice.

I shake my head, "I don't have much of a choice do I?" Although I do agree with him and would much rather curl up on the couch and not move until Monday morning.

"Look, Theo already implied last night that Rory provides good times to people. Which is one step closer to getting him to give us the drug we think he brings over from Europe. If he offers it to us tonight we are almost there on busting him for being the head provider. The sooner we get closer to him, the sooner this whole thing is closed up," Aurora says. Ryan told me she had a promotion riding on this case being solved so I know she is willing to do anything to wrap it up. I nod in agreement and then ask, "Have you ever been to a proper ballet before Aurora?"

She shakes her head, "Can't say I am much of a theatergoer." I exhale loudly again and reply, "We'll need to get you another dress. And we'll both have to get completely ready again."

The thought of going and getting my hair and make-up done again and spending several hours in heels is literally torture. I look to Aurora and wonder where I can quickly get her a dress appropriate for the ballet. I wish Annabeth wasn't being a pain in the ass right now because I'm sure I could find something in Aurora's size in her closet. I wasn't able to go collect "donations" yet for Aurora from anyone but the thought of charity brings one person's name to mind. One person who is always eager to look good. I look to Aurora and tell her, "Ryan knows my favorite bottle of wine. If I help y'all with this I expect a big bottle from each of you for Christmas."

I snatch my phone off the couch and die a little as I scroll to LulaBelle's number. She is in a chipper mood when she answers on the second ring, "Has hell frozen over, or is Sawyer Sweeney actually callin' me on a Sunday?"

I know I need to be nice to her if I want to get what I need from her, "Ha-ha LulaBelle, I was actually callin' on behalf of a friend I thought you could help. I think you met her last night, Lola James from the Denver D.A.R- anyway we unexpectedly got tickets to the ballet tonight. I was wondering if you possibly had a dress she could borrow since you are about the same size and she only needs it for a couple hours so it's kinda wasteful to go buy one."

"Oh yes I remember Lola, she was a doll. I would of course love to help out a fellow club member. Tell her to come by and we'll have tea while she goes through my massive closet. I have tons of options she can choose from. Garrett actually had to have a second closet built for me I have so-"

I cut her off, "Sounds great LulaBelle, she'll be there in twenty minutes will that work?"

"I'll get the maid to start on the cucumber sandwic-"

"Great bye!" I tell her before she starts listing off every snack she and Aurora will be munching on while she's there. I look to Aurora and say, "She's fine to let you borrow something."

She smiles, "Wow, that's great! Are you ready to go now or?"

I shake my head, "Oh no, my quota for hanging out with obnoxious cows has already been filled but Austin would love to drop you off at LulaBelle's." Austin goes to object but I glare at him, "I am the only one not in the F.B.I and yet I am having to do the brunt of the work here. You did nothing to help last night so today is your turn."

He purses his lips but he knows I am right. I look to Ryan, "I am going to go take a nap. Wake me up at three-thirty and I'll have you bring me home so I can get ready. No one better disturb me until then." With that, I wave them off and trudge back upstairs to go enjoy my peace and quiet.
