Into a Dream

Simon continues speeding down the windy dirt roads and his speed is the only thing keeping me from lunging into the front seat and jumping out of the car. He hasn't said anything to me yet but my heart is beating me senselessly.

I think to my phone in the trunk and pray that Ryan can somehow hack into my GPS and follow us to where ever we are going. Simon is avoiding all major highways and is cutting through dirt roads that snake through the woods. I haven't seen any signage, so I am unsure what direction we are headed. Simon hits a deep pothole and the car bounces along the unpaved road.

"Why you so pale Sawyer? You and me go way back. You ain't got nothin' to be afraid of," Simon says and I watch an unsettling smile creep across his face. He's more gangly than I remember and I can see his skinny tattooed arms stretched out in front of him. His dark hair is buzzed off and by the frantic way he moves around, I can tell he's on some sort of drugs.

"What's this all about?" I ask him, hoping he'll assume I am in the dark about the knowledge Ryan and Austin have on him.

"Well, it's funny Sawyer. Ya know I picked you up tryin' to ruffle Austin's feathers a bit and turns out, I got his partner all riled up instead," he says enthusiastically. "What's he go by again to you? Sam right?" He smiles again to me, letting me know he's in on my fib and I twist my sweaty hands together.

"So pretty little thing, what's Austin told you about me and my pops?" He asks, glancing back to me in the rearview mirror while we still bump and bounce all over the dirt road.

"What do you mean? He hasn't said anything about you," I lie and Simon knows it.

"Sawyer baby, don't try lyin' to me. You ain't very good at it. It will make things so much easier if you can just be honest. So I'm gonna ask you again, what do you know about me?"

"Simon, I used to know you back in elementary school, so whatever I knew then is all I know now. Austin never said anything about you to me. Why would he?" Simon glances back to me again but doesn't say anything else. He suddenly takes a sharp right and I am jumbled around in the back seat. As soon as I regain my composure, Simon slams on the breaks and I almost slam into the passenger seat in front of me. Simon pushes his door open as I try and look through the dark tinted windows to see where we've arrived.

Suddenly, my car door is yanked open and a large hand comes and pulls me from the car by my arm. I'm dragged out to the front of the car and I see what looks like an abandoned warehouse in front of me. We are still deep in the woods and I smell lake water nearby. I twist myself, to dig my heels into the dirt-covered ground and I don't recognize the man that is holding onto me. We follow behind Simon into the warehouse as I fight and struggle against the beast that's holding on to me. His sausage fingers are gripping me tightly and I'm unable to loosen his hold. My wiggling doesn't affect him since he stands a good foot and a half taller than I do and is four times my size.

Simon pulls a rusty door on the side of the building open and the beast pushes me through the dark opening. He pulls me down a dark, dimly lit hallway and stops in front of a small metal door at the end of the building. It looks like we are in an old office part of a warehouse but I am given no signs as to what this warehouse holds. The small rickety door is finally pulled open and I see Kenny leaning in an oversized leather desk chair. He grins when he sees me.

"Sawyer Sweeney, just the girl we were looking for," he says with a smile and the beast shoves me into a hard office chair. He straps my hands together behind my back using zip ties and the thin plastic digs deep into my wrists.

"What's going on?" I ask again and Kenny still has the look of amusement about him.

"Don't worry Sawyer, we are just keeping you here for safekeeping until Saturday evening."

I shake my head at him as I ask, "Why? What for?" Kenny leans forward and plants his elbows on the desk. His eyes dart back and forth as he looks into mine.

"We need this wedding to go off without a hitch," he explains. "So, if your big brother and his partner are out here looking for you, they can't be lookin' for us at my baby nieces wedding ya see? They are going to have to pick which is more important, bustin' me or savin' you. We needed to create confusion. You made it kinda tough on us by deciding to leave a day early, but I'm glad to know we caught ya before you boarded a plane." I look to him in awe wondering how the hell he knew I was going to Philly and I know I will never trust my phone again.

"Looks like Ryan is a little more than Austin's partner by the way. These two are datin'," Simon informs Kenny and I watch Kenny's eyes light up.

"Even better. Big brother and boyfriend will be ripping through the woods trying to find their prize nestled inside somewhere. That's great," Kenny replies.

"What's so important about Whitney and Jackson's wedding? I can't imagine their nuptials justifies kidnapping." I ask. Simon and Kenny look to each other and Kenny lets out a light laugh.

"Oh, but they do. You see we need both Whitney and Jackson to officially sign their marriage certificate and we can't have the F.B.I preventing this from happening." So it's confirmed. Austin and Ryan are F.B.I.

"Then why go to the wedding at all? The F.B.I won't bust in on Whitney's wedding if you aren't there."

Kenny slightly shakes his head, "I can't chance Whitney getting cold feet. So we need more agents to think we are here with you than at the wedding."

Still confused I ask, "Why? Is it a money thing? The Hemmings will force her into a prenuptial agreement- an iron-clad prenup. I had to sign one."

Kenny nods, "Yes, there will be a prenup but Whitney will be entitled to half of anything received after their wedding date. And the Hemmings have a big business venture coming in that we need to be a part of. Don't worry dear, Whitney is privy to all this." I look to him with shock splashed across my face. Whitney is marrying Jackson for money?

"The Carmichaels are one of the wealthiest families in Hollis. Why would Whitney need Jackson's wealth?" I ask, completely overwhelmed with all of this new information.

"Correction darlin', the Carmichaels were one of the wealthiest families. They're currently broke. We had a bad deal with a business partner- took everything we had and we haven't been able to get back up and running since," Simon informs me and my jaw drops. None of this makes any sense to me.

"I still don't understand any of this," I confess and Kenny sinks back into his leather chair.

"It's simple Sawyer. The Carmichaels are broke, the Hemmings are flourishing. We need the Hemmings to help finance our latest business venture and we have a little baby bundle of joy that will be arriving in a few months with a fully loaded trust fund. We pull the money from the trust fund as a loan and boom, the Carmichaels are back in business."

"What business?" I snap and Simon rubs his hands together.

"Drugs baby."

"And Whitney knows all of this?" I gasp and both Simon and Kenny nod.

"It took some...convincing but she knew she had to do right by her family," Kenny says and I feel like I might throw up. I now have a million questions for Whitney. Did she start the affair because Kenny asked her to? Was she intentionally trying to get pregnant? How do I even go about getting any of the answers to my questions?

"Well Sawyer, you just sit tight. You've heard enough and I don't have time for any more questions. I'm hoping you left your phone in the car, we need them to think they are tracking you here." Kenny says but before I can ask any more questions, Simon is suddenly holding a murky rag up to cover my face. I do my best to fight his grip and hold my breath, but I can't fight the darkness that sucks me out of the office and into a dream.
