Chapter Three: Katora
"I'm thinking about going back to college." Katora spoke while she ran with her sisters.
"Tired of selling and growing weed?" Shanell said sarcastically.
"Would you let her shine for once? What are you going to major in?" Larissa asked stretching her arms.
"Cosmetology. You know I love doing hair."
Ever since Katora was little she loved hair. She learned how to braid at a young age and she branched off into different styles. Katora could do everything from wigs to box braids. She even did her sister's hair for free.
"How are you going to pay for it? And why do you wanna go to college all of a sudden?" Shanell asked a awful lot of questions.
"I'll try to get a scholarship or something. This is something I thought long and hard about. Plus, it will be a good distraction from all of the men I've been dealing with." Katora rolled her eyes at the thoughts of DaVonte or Zaire.
"Well, whatever you decide! We're here to support you no matter what." Larissa said smiling.
***
By ten oclock that night Katora was completing her application for the community college across town. She was serious about changing herself for the better. Katora closed her laptop once her application was submitted.
Looking around her apartment she knew she needed a fresh start for the new year. Katora went into her bathroom and cut the bright lights on. She looked at herself into the mirror and cringed.
"I look a fucking mess." She said to herself.
Her skin was pale, not glowing like she used to glow. Bags rested under her brown eyes. Small pimples started forming on her pretty face. Katora opened up a drawer that contained her hair products.
Taking the silver scissors in her hands she began cutting her sew in out. She was left with a hair covered sink and cornrows. Undoing her real hair she looked at the length. Katora then began cutting her real hair.
About an hour of cutting and styling, Katora looked into the mirror, her hair now styled in a curly short cut. Sweeping up the hair and putting her hair products back, Katora washed her face to restore some freshness.
Katora was making some late night snacks when she heard a knock at her door. She furrowed her face in confusion. Looking through the peep hole she saw DaVonte on the other end. She mumbled profanities under her breathe.
"One second." Katora yelled before running to the bathroom to put some make up on her face.
Here she was again trying to impress a man that didn't want her for..her. Finishing her quick make-up Katora opened the door. DaVonte grimaced once he noticed her short hair, not liking it short, at all.
"What happened to your hair?" DaVonte asked stepping inside pushing her out of the way.
Katora frowned and subconsciously pulled her hoodie on to cover her head. She was now insecure being around DaVonte. She was itching to pull a wig on so he could finally look at her the way she wanted him to look at her.
"Why are you here?" She asked picking at her coffin nails.
"I can't see a friend?"
"The only time you wanna see me is when you wanna have sex or get high. Which one is it?"
"Both."
Katora put up her hand to stop him from grabbing onto her waist. She was surprised he had came to her and not the other way around. DaVonte gave her a look of confusion. She had always been submissive.
"We can't do this anymore, DaVonte." Katora spoke her voice heavy.
"Why not? You didn't have a problem with it month ago." He argued.
"But I'm talking about us now. I'm tired of being just the homie. I'm tired of being a sidechick. I'm tired of not being exclusive and official." Katora vented as she felt tears pooling in her eyes.
DaVonte sucked his teeth. He was already tired of hearing her voice. And he didn't care about her feelings. All he wanted was sex. But he was starting to rethink his choice in coming here. Katora continued to ramble on but she soon stopped noticing he didn't care.
"You can leave. I don't want anything to do with you!" Katora yelled at him.
Closing her front door she broke down and slid down the door. All she wanted was love. But the person she wanted love from didn't want her. And she now realized that. DaVonte was no good for her.
