Chapter One: Shanell

Shanell drove around town early on Sunday morning. The birds were out and chirping and the sun was still rising illuminating the sky in yellow and blue. She had been dressed in formal attire since she had been working late Saturday night and had to get ready for church in the morning.

"Hello?" She asked as she clicked on her bluetooth that sat in her ear.

"Where the hell are you? You know daddy and mommy wanted you here on time." Katora, her youngest sister, exclaimed.

"I'm on my way! You know I had to be at my club late last night doing paperwork. Just stall for me. Please and thank you!" Shanell said.

"Fine. But hurry up." Katora said blowing air out of her mouth.

Ten minutes later Shanell pulled up to the baptist church. The place looked crowded but everyone was already inside. She parked her truck and ran into the chapel. The choir was singing a hyped up gospel song that already had people hollering.

Shanell smoothed out her blazer and spotted her family. She made her way over waving at some of her church friends she used to rock with back in the day. Shanell never really went to church unless her parents asked her too. She honestly thought it was a waist of time. Squeezing in between Katora and Larissa she sighed knowing her mother had seen her walk in late.

The church service went on and on and on. Shanell had fallen asleep multiple times and rolled her eyes at the many "Christians". Shanell was a very judgmental person ever since she finished college and owned multiple online and offline businesses. She just thought she was that bitch.

After the sermon was finished and everyone exited the church the sisters took time to greet the many people they knew. Shanell still held her stank ass attitude but it started to fade once she started talking to her old crew.

"Yo, yo, yo. I haven't seen you since you went off to Spelman." One of her friends, Ricky, said eyeing her outfit.

"Wassup! It's good to see you." Shanell opened her arms and welcomed Ricky into a hug.

They had been close friends growing up. Always stealing candy from the corner store and bouncing off the walls hyper as hell. But, it all stopped once Shanell and her family moved in the middle of high school, but Shanell still kept in contact...sometimes.

Ricky and Shanell spent some time talking and soon walked outside of the almost empty church. Ricky's other male friends waited for him outside. They greeted Shanell since they knew who she was.

"Nelly! Hurry up, you already know I'm hungry." Katora yelled from the car.

Shanell rolled her eyes and sighed. Katora would be riding back with Shanell back to her parents house to eat Sunday lunch. But, Shanell was starting to regret it. She turned to Ricky and he nodded his head understanding that she didn't have time to catch up.

"I gotta go. But call me sometime! I still got the same number." Shanell said before scurrying off to her BMW and pulling off.

"Damn, she fine as fuck." BJ, one of Ricky's friends said.

"You out here cussing in front of the Lord's house." Ricky said sucking his teeth.

"Ayo, she got a man?" Kevin asked intrigued with the woman that stood in front of him.

"Nah, she always had her head in the books and her business. But she ain't gone want you dawg." Ricky said rubbing his waves.

"Why not?" Kevin asked scrunching his face up.

"You been in the pin. She ain't like that. Shanell may seem cool and shit but she bougie as hell. You can try though." Ricky said smirking.

Shanell sat between her sisters staring down at the meal in front of her. Cornbread, collard greens, black eyed peas, chicken, mashed potatoes, and macaroni and cheese sat on the serving plates in all their glory.

Her mouth watered at the sight of the food and her stomach growled like she hadn't eaten in days. Well, she hadn't due to the fact that she had been eating salads for the part year and a half.

Shanell was always insecure about her body. When she was a teenager she struggled with being overweight but eventually shed the pounds by going on a major diet. She felt like she would relapse into stress eating if she filled her plate with her momma's cooking. But, she needed to eat a real meal. So she filled her plate up with all that she could handle and started eating.

"When you gonna find yourself a man?" Her mother,Josephine, asked chewing on her chicken.

"I don't need a man, momma. We've been through this before. Until my clubs get up and running I won't be settling down no time soon."Shanell said catching an attitude.

"You're pushing thirty-five and you haven't gotten married or even had kids. I'm just worried about you." Her mother tried to explain.

"Stop worrying about me then! I'm a grown ass woman. And I don't even want kids so stop aggravating me." Shanell slammed her hands down on the table and left slamming the front door in the process.
