CHAPTER FOURTY-FOUR
Third Person
"Miss Minji?"
Yeosang mumbled before stirring his eyes open. The ceiling of the place is so unfamiliar but the scent is. It felt like flashbacks waved over his mind: hospitals, accidents, injuries, and bad memories.
The blonde exhaled sharply, but his worries faded away within a second when he spotted Seonghwa peacefully sleeping beside him. The elder's hand was intertwined with his. Yeosang felt some sort of relief when Seonghwa was beside him the whole time.
Yet, Yeosang questioned...was it a dream?
It was so vivid though. The encounter with Minji felt so real but so vague.
Suddenly, the door opened and it revealed San and Wooyoung together while holding hands.
Wooyoung's eyes widen when seeing Yeosang awake from his slumber, to the point the younger deliberately yelled in bewilderment. "Holy shit! Yeosang, you're awake!"
Seonghwa jumped in surprise from his sleep before looking at his husband. "Sangie, oh my goodness. Are you okay? Are you hurt? How are you feeling?" He stood up and placed a soft peck on the latter's forehead.
Despite the red tint cheeks he has, Yeosang replied timidly, "I-I'm okay. What...what happened?"
Wooyoung dashed to his best friend and took his hand, "The doctor said you were in coma. My gosh Yeosang, we were so worried for you. I thought I'd lose you forever."
San nodded, "We visited you to see if you were okay. Thank heavens you are awake." He softly ruffled the blonde's hair.
Seeing San now, Yeosang wondered if the pink-haired is Minji's son. The woman told him to thank San for everything, and he finally understood what was San's motive behind it. Although, he was unsure to ask if San is really indeed Minji's son. It might view him crazy.
Yeosang got rid of that thought and change the subject, "Thank you for your concerns. I must scared you a lot."
"Of course we were," Seonghwa almost exaggerated but carefully lowered the tone of his voice, "I thought you died in my arms, baby. I still don't understand why you had a coma when there's literally nothing wrong with you."
"Coma? I was probably out for a day, Hwa. You're just exaggerating." Yeosang rolled his eyes.
"Uh...about that," Wooyoung trailed off, "You were out for a week."
Yeosang's jaw dropped, extremely surprised that he was asleep for the entire week. But the encounter with Minji felt like a whole hour conversation. Why did it take him so long to wake up?
Speaking of it...
"What is the date today?"
The three exchanged glances before Seonghwa replied.
"It's June 13."
June 13?! Shit, he only has two days left.
"Why? Is it because it's almost your birthday? Don't worry, Sangie. I already have a party planned for you." Wooyoung winked.
"I need to go to school." Yeosang ignored his best friend's remark. He needs to find that book and he does not want to waste any time.
"School? You are not going to school until you are totally fine." Seonghwa scolded, not liking how school is the first thing on Yeosang's mind. "You just woke up. I don't want you to faint in again."
"But I need to go to school."
"Yeosang, Seonghwa is right. We want you to rest. Besides, school just ended an hour ago. What's the point going there?" Wooyoung agreed with the eldest, and also having enough of his best friend's stubbornness.
"No! You guys don't understand--"
Before Yeosang could even complete his sentence, San interjected quickly, "Guys, please let's not argue over this. By the way, can I talk you for a while, Yeosang...alone?" He pleaded, and there's something fishy behind San's facial expressions.
Seonghwa abruptly faced the latter with an arched eyebrow, "Alone?"
"I won't do anything if that is what you're thinking of," San rolled his eyes with the lack of trust Seonghwa has for him. "It's something important." He added for Seonghwa to be convinced.
Yeosang sighed once again before nodding, "Sure. Please give us privacy."
"Okay," Wooyoung understood and pulled Seonghwa with him, leading him out of the room. Seonghwa was still a little skeptical of San while Wooyoung knew what was going on between them.
It's been a week ever since San told him everything. Wooyoung, until now, still couldn't believe it...
And everything that was told to him, Wooyoung knew he had to keep his mouth shut...which means he can't tell Yeosang and most importantly Seonghwa.
----
"What is it you want to tell me?" Yeosang started first, curious to know why San wanted alone time with him.
San carefully sat on the bed, "Are you okay?"
"Is that what you want to tell me?" Yeosang forced a chuckle, "Well, do I look okay? Obviously not. So many questionable things are eating my brain. I don't even know what's my purpose in life anymore."
"It's my mother, isn't it? You met her, right?"
Yeosang froze before slowly turning his head to face San. With pure shock but in a relaxed tone, Yeosang uttered, "H-How did you know?"
"I am a messenger for a reason." The pink-haired stated.
Messenger?
"My mother is a goddess, and every goddess has a messenger. My mission is to help you break the spell, but you must do it on your own way. I am just here to guide you ever since the beginning."
"But I don't understand...why didn't you tell me? Who are your real parents? A-And if you knew about the curse and the future, why didn't you stop me from doing a mistake?"
"Why would I tell you about it? The spell would be meaningless." San made a point, "Mom and Dad are my adoptive parents. Mother is my only biological parent. And I never said about the future, I told you--I am a messenger, not a future teller. That's all I'll have to say. My life doesn't concern you. What's important is you should break the spell before the 15th of June."
Yeosang didn't know what to say as he never expected that San would know everything. But the latter is right, he needs to get that book. The book is his only way to break the curse...and to save his life.
San stood up and informed, "You'll probably be discharged tomorrow."
"Wait," Yeosang paused, causing San to stop his tracks from going to the door. "I just want to say thank you for everything." The blonde mumbled sincerely, words coming from the heart that caused San to smile from ear to ear.
If San was to be honest, he is silently pressuring him to complete his task.
"Please be cautious and careful, Yeosang. Keep that in mind."
He is afraid. What if Yeosang wasn't able to get the book? What will happen to his life? The pessimism is slowly eating him. It worried San a lot.
Why you may ask?
Because San's life is dependent to Yeosang decisions.
That's why his hands are glitching, because his peak of life is about to end.
Unless...
SPECIAL SUBPLOT: KIM SAN
After placing the spell on the soulmates, on July 10, 1998, Minji created a guardian angel for the couple and a messenger that she needed.
Minji didn't need a man to bare a child. She used magic to create one. For Minji, it's not simple. Her child needed to be smart, wise, loyal, and honest.
Therefore, San was created. He was still a baby but his memory is incredible, he definitely remembered all the events: from 4 months old up to this time. That is why he remembers Minji as his mother.
Nineteen years of San's life, every month he visits his mother to tell the news. San never questioned why his life was like that and rather stay faithful to his mother. He was going to get a reward anyway.
What's the reward?
Freedom and mortality.
Yes. Just like Minji, San is immortal. Freedom was his wish once he succeeded his mission. He wanted to explore what life really means and its purpose. Even though he loves his mother, San didn't like to be controlled. He wanted to be a person with free-will, just like everyone else.
Aside from freedom, he wanted to experience what love truly means and feels like. Ever guess why San was the huge playboy in school? That's his way of experiencing it. It may be immoral of him but he knew he wasn't going to live long. Nevertheless, all the girls he dated-- all he felt was rather attraction and sexual tension.
But someone made him realize things...
"Oh my fucking god, San! Why did you tell him?!"
San looked down depressingly. He knew it was one of the major rules he has to avoid, yet he broke not only one--but two.
"I got carried away, Mother--"
Minji wouldn't let him continue as she scolded, "But you knew! I gave you a chance! You disobeyed me twice now, son! I'm almost this close to banishing you."
San's eyes widen and immediately kneeled down before his mother.
"No! Please Mother. Don't do this. I'm almost this close to succeeding..."
"But he's a mortal, Kim San! A mortal! You should've kept your mouth shut!" Minji was so furious when she knew that San broke the most important rule.
San's lips quiver in anxiousness. He was terrified seeing his mother angry over his careless mistake.
"I'm so sorry, Mother. I just wanted to fulfill our promise. It was the fairest thing to do."
"Promise?" Minji scoffed, "You should not even tell him about your identity! I don't care if your hands are glitching or what, you knew the rule. And that rule is to not tell anyone about your identity until I say so!"
Streaks of tears were already visible on San's eyes. "I-I can't just lie to him. He's the one I wanted to be with after my mission."
Minji couldn't even believe what her son was saying, "You were crying over that blondie before a week ago because you like him. You broke rule number three, San"
Rule #3: Never catch feelings for either the soulmates.
"Then you told blondie's best friend your identity, and now you're telling me he's the one you want after your mission?! What was his name again? Jung Wooyoung?"
Rule #1: The most important rule. Never tell anyone your identity unless said by Minji.
"He's a mortal, San. No mortals are allowed to know about us except the Parks and the Kangs. I'm not prohibiting you to love a mortal, my son. But you should know better. Your decision affects your future! I already warned you."
Minji stormed off the place with such disappointment. San just stayed in his place, crying his tears out.
He knew he fucked up.
Bad.
Midnight, San decided to visit the person he wanted to see right now.
"Sannie? What are you doing here?"
The pink-haired was so thankful that Wooyoung didn't view him differently after telling everything to him. He felt safe and comfortable with the younger, and if San was being honest, he wanted to be with him. It seemed straightforward and fast but San could care less.
"I want to see you."
Wooyoung bit his lower lip to suppress from smiling.
"Do you want to stay over? My parents won't be home until tomorrow afternoon." Wooyoung hoped that the elder will say yes because he missed him too.
And also touch deprived.
"Wooyoung-ah," San uttered his name softly, his hands cupping the younger's cheeks, "Be my boyfriend."
The younger was surprised at the sudden announcement, "W-What?"
"Be mine, Jung Wooyoung."
They spend the night in each other's arms. They made love to wash their worries away. To San, it was the best night he ever had.
Naked bodies covered with thick sheets. The younger's body was tired from the few rounds, now embracing his boyfriend while fast asleep, head hiding in the crook of San's neck.
San was wide awake. His arm was under Wooyoung's head, using it as a pillow, and was gently patting and playing with the latter's black hair. The night was beautiful indeed. He loved it.
But the worries started to wave over his mind.
His mission. Yeosang. The curse. Seonghwa.
He's almost there. San is almost free.
Seonghwa and Yeosang just needed to break the curse.
Then San will be free and mortal.
If not...
He will be gone forever.
