CHAPTER FOUR
Kang Yeosang
They're engaged.
I'm not supposed to feel this way but I am. I'm already in pain by seeing them together, now I'm in agony that they're gonna tie the knot. I have no right to feel this way. This is my sister's boyfriend—now fiancé that I'm crushing on. Lia deserved him more than I do.
Wooyoung constantly tells me to make a move on Seonghwa, yet I don't want to end up making bad decisions. I'd rather be hurt. But the more I get hurt, the more it'll drive me crazy. I wonder what did I do in my past life to deserve something like this.
I hovered over my bed and hugged my Toothless plushie, which is my favorite stuffed toy by the way. I faintly smiled when I looked at the toy, I remember buying this because it looks like Seonghwa. So childish of me.
I didn't notice a water droplet on the bedsheet. I sighed again and wiped my tears. Why am I crying again? My throat is already sore from crying too much. Why does Seonghwa have an effect on me?
Out of all people, why did I have to like my sister's fiance?
"Yeosang?" I heard a knock on the door, "You in there?" Lia's voice slightly echoed inside the room. I abruptly stood up and went to the bathroom to wash my face.
After that, I opened the door and let her into my bedroom. She arched an eyebrow as she examined my face carefully.
"Are you okay, Yeosang?" She didn't hesitate to ask. "Your eyes are sort of red. Were you crying?" She added.
I shook my head in panic, "No. I'm not crying." I tried to think of an excuse, "The soap got into my eye while I was washing my face. That's why it looks sore." I lied, and I almost sigh in relief because she seemed to believed it.
"Okay!" I could see the bright smile on her face. She's so happy, probably happy from what happened earlier.
And I would never want to wipe that precious smile off her face.
"I still can't believe he actually proposed to me at school!" Lia exclaimed, laying down on my bed while screeching.
I forced a smile and sat beside her. Lia smiles and placed her head on my knee. I brushed off some hair away from her face as she was admiring the shiny ring on her finger.
"Seonghwa is right. You really said yes to him." I softly utter, still couldn't believe that my sister is engaged to the man I love.
She chuckled, "Well, we promised that we're going to marry each other."
I frowned. "But why so early?" I tried asking.
"It's really complicated." Lia answers nonchalantly.
"Wait—so you knew the proposal would be this early?" I glanced at her out of surprise.
"Yeah." She responded plainly.
"Do you know what was his reason?" I tried asking again. If I can't know answer from Seonghwa, then surely she's going to tell me.
"I told you Sangie. It's really complicated. I bet you wouldn't even understand." Lia sighed.
"Then I'll try to understand." I assure her. But deep inside, I really want to know the truth behind it.
Lia sat up and crossed her legs. She frowns a bit and began to speak, "Seonghwa's family had a terrible history." She started.
I nodded for her to continue.
"He didn't tell me the whole story because it is a family matter and not to mention very personal to him. Months ago, he opened up to me that he has to marry his soulmate before he turns 20. So I wasn't surprise when he proposed to me but I didn't expect that he would propose to me at school." Lia pauses for a good laugh, "Seonghwa knew I was his soulmate. We bond a lot together and we complete each other's puzzle. Great match right?"
I was speechless. I was slowly getting her point, but it still confuses me. Seonghwa has to marry Lia because of beliefs then?
"How does he know that you are his soulmate? How could he tell that it is you?" I asked.
Lia smiles, "It was a Kang that he needs to marry. Even his parents said that."
I'm a Kang too.
"But there are a lot of Kangs in the country. How could he be sure that you are his soulmate?" I argued back.
Lia shrugged, "I once asked him that but he replied that he feel...some sort of a different way when it comes to me? Like an attachment. I guess."
I bit my lip at her response. The new information is a lot to take in as I never expect Seonghwa's family to be this way. They are under a...curse? And to probably break this is by them to get married? Seems like they are living in a Disney movie.
"What happens if Seonghwa marries the wrong person?"
I couldn't help but ask. I wonder what will happen if I was the one marrying him? What would happen to me? What would happen to Seonghwa? What would happen to Lia?
Lia made eye contact with me, "I don't know, honestly." She replied with a frown on her face, "It's not even my place to tell you this. Please don't say a word about this to Seonghwa, I trust you so much." Lia pleaded as her hands are pressed together.
I smiled and patted her head like a puppy. "Trust me, I won't."
Lia didn't take long enough to wrap her arms around me for a tight hug. "I am so lucky to have you as my brother."
You really are lucky to have a selfless brother like me.
—
"Wait, hold up! Let me get this straight. So you are trying to say that Seonghwa needs to marry Lia because of this weird soulmate thingy?" Wooyoung sassily interrogated with an arched eyebrow.
I nodded once again and stabbed my steak with my fork.
"That's fucking bullshit, Yeosang. Who fucking believes in that?" Wooyoung scoffs in disbelief.
"Apparently I do." I shrugged and directly eat my steak.
"I thought you were smarter than that? So you tend to believe whatever your sister tells you?" Wooyoung argued.
I rolled my eyes, "It looks like a serious matter for the both of them." I simply said.
"Woah, woah, woah." Wooyoung paused, still with an unpleasant look on his face. "You're going to stop making a move on him because of what your sister told you, aren't you?"
I dropped my fork on my plate then crossed my arms and directly looked at him, "Wooyoung, I don't plan making a move on him in the first place. That's like...going to ruin everything!" I softly shouted for not everyone to hear our conversation.
"You're such a pussy, Yeosang." Wooyoung cackled softly, knowing that he's teasing at his point.
"If you are in my place Woo, would you really fight for him?" I randomly asked, wanting to know his opinion.
He rolled his eyes, "No. I don't even like Seonghwa. Why would I fight for him?"
I facepalmed at his reply, "You dumbass. Just imagine it's Choi San marrying your sibling, what would you feel?" I elaborated for him to understand the situation.
He tilted his head to the side, beginning to think of an answer. "I wouldn't fight for him, Sangie."
Both of my eyebrows are raised for I was surprised at his answer, "You would not? I didn't expect that. How come?"
"I'm only attracted to San. You're madly in love with Seonghwa. The situation is different." Wooyoung bluntly replies.
"How about if you're in love with San, would you fight for him then?"
"Yeah."
"How come?"
"It's already an instinct. I will fight for him because I love him, don't you think?" Wooyoung made a good point.
I stared at him for a while, "What if he doesn't love you back?" I asked again.
Wooyoung rests his chin on his hand, "Then so be it. At least I tried, right?" Wooyoung smiles at me.
"You would really take the risk?"
"Yeah, because I'm not a pussy like you." He chuckled and I shoved him, rolling my eyes after.
After eating our food, we walked down the hallway to head back to our next class.
As we arrived in class, whisperings could be heard in the classroom. I was confused on what's going on until I realized that they were all looking at me. I stole a quick glance at Wooyoung, who's just as confused as I am.
Fear and anxiousness suddenly rise inside my body. I felt uncomfortable as their stares are darting on mine. What on earth is happening?
"What's going on?" Wooyoung sternly spoke ahead for me since I was uneasy at the situation.
A classmate of mine and a friend of Wooyoung named Yeonjun, stood up finally spoke which shocks the both of us.
"You guys heard the news? Lia is pregnant."
