The Black Lake

Dear Mum,

School is going great! I have excellent grades in all of my classes aside from Divination....I've never understood that class. This school year is going by very fast. The Gryffindor Quidditch team has been undefeated so far this year! The captain says I'd make a great keeper... I'm not so sure. James Potter is the seeker this year again. He is still as amazing as before! By the way... I was wondering, can Sirius come home with us for Christmas this year? Things aren't going so well for him at home and I don't want him all alone at the castle for Christmas. 'Tis the season of giving, right?

I love you lots,

Lucy

Sirius Black is one of my best friends at Hogwarts. He is nice, sensitive and generous on the inside, but on the outside, he's a jerk, a repulsive jerk. I swear, he was always either hexing someone, or snogging someone he doesn't know in a broom closet.

I have had feelings for Sirius since I first met him. I've never really thought of acting on them, but even if I wanted to, I just don't think I would be able to build up enough courage to tell him. Sure, he's my all time best friend, and I love him unconditionally, but I don't think I want to risk our friendship if he doesn't feel the same way.

Today is November 18th and I reckon that Sirius had already snogged more than half of the fifth year girls already this year. I don't know why these blond bimbos keep coming back to him even when they know that they're only going to get crushed, but then again, I do know, he's pretty irresistible.

This is another reason I just can't tell Sirius how I feel. There's always a chance that he could just break my heart just like all the other girls he "allegedly" dated (Sirius's definition of date more closely resembles a hit and run than an actual relationship, so yes, "allegedly"). On the bright side, if we did get together, he would actually know my name before we kissed!

Tomorrow is the full moon. I know all about Remus being a werewolf and all that secretive mumbo-jumbo. I also know that the Marauders, as they called themselves, transform into illegal animagi. They offered me a position in their little "let's support Remus Lupin when he is a werewolf during the full moon and keep him company even though he could kill us!" support group. As much as I loved to break the laws and face death every month, I kindly declined the offer.

I was never, and will, most likely, never be friends with Remus Lupin. We talk every once in a while and we are civil towards each other, but we were never really friends. Out of the four boys, I only took interest to James Potter and Sirius Black, they were my best friends aside from Lily Evans of course. I flat out don't trust Peter, that little rat. He just gets under my skin and festers. I don't really understand why those boys like him.

These are the things I think about on a daily basis. Right now, I am walking down to the owlery to send the letter to my mother. At the beginning of the year, she insisted that I write to her at least once a week.

I wouldn't disobey her orders, I don't have a reason to. I love her half to death, and miss her like mad. She is like another friend to me, let alone, my mother. Ever since my father died, she and my brother Alec have had a lot of time on their hands. Lately, they've become world travelers, visiting places like Ireland, India, even America, all while I'm stuck in school. I don't really mind though, I know it helps mum keep her mind off of dad.

Alec is six years old now. He never got the chance to know his father. Voldemort, no I am not afraid of his name, got to him too quickly. My father had always taught me to follow my dreams and do what's right. That is exactly what he did. He opposed Voldemort in every way possible. By the time he died, he was one of His biggest opponents.

I shook the thought from my mind, trying not to get worked up over it again. I continued on my walk in solitude. Once I had arrived at the Owlery, I saw there was no one there. I was glad too, because I was not in the mood to socialize.

I called for my bird, Réalta, to come down and fetch my letter. Réalta means star in Irish. I love to stargaze in the summer time with my mother and brother, Sirius also shared this hobby, which is ironic because- well, you know why.

I watched as Réalta flew up and out of the circular building, she started on her journey back to home to deliver the letter. I turned on my heels and started to walk the long trail back to the castle. I slowed down a little bit when I heard a blood-curdling scream down by the shore of the lake. Then I heard a familiar voice yell "Stop resisting and tell the truth!" immediately followed by another scream. I looked around the bend to find that my two favorite boys were fighting by the lake. Sirius was sprawled out on the grass as James was straddling him trying to hold down his arms. Peter and Remus were gathered around watching the confrontation.

Sirius, who was obviously wasted, was yelling and screaming like a little girl. His yelling was mostly towards James, but some of it was just random rambling that made to sense. "MERLIN'S SOFT SILKY BEARD! LET GO OF MY BEAUTIFUL HAIR, YOU SLIMY, YET SURPRISINGLY GOOD-SMELLING GIT! YOU SHOULD KNOW BETTER THAN TO STROKE ME LIKE-" he was cut off by James' hand clamping over his mouth, which only succeeded in muffling the nonsense, as Sirius continued to ramble on.

"We don't need to hear the 'hair lecture' again, Padfoot! I WOULDN'T HAVE TO BE TOUCHING YOUR HAIR IF YOU DIDN'T STEAL MY BLEEDING FIRE WHISKEY!" he retorted. The handsome boy underneath him just sneered.

"BOYS! Boys, guys?! Whats going on here?" I asked them even though it was pretty obvious, "James get off of Sirius! Sirius get up! Tell me whats going on here!" These boys knew better than to disobey me. They knew that the knowledge that lays beneath my silky brunette curls was way more advanced in hexes than the average person would guess, so, in other words, I could out-Hex anyone in the whole school. I simply chose not to use them (and also it's against the rules).

"Well," James started, "Earlier this morning, I got up to get my bottle of Fire Whiskey from my secret stash, but I found the hiding place empty, and the bottle, which was once full, was empty when I found it on Sirius's bed. He's OBVIOUSLY the prime suspect, I mean, look at the git, Lucy!" he explained as he glared daggers at Sirius, who just smiled back in his loopy state.

"Alright, we'll just get Sirius to buy you a new bottle of Fire Whiskey once he is sober. As for you, James, you should know better than to keep alcohol in your dorm! Hiding place or not, and especially after what happened last year." I shivered at the memory that popped into my head. James must have been thinking the same thing because his face was washed over with disgust. "Wait, wait. Wait, why on earth were you going to drink Fire Whiskey in the morning?"

"I had the rumbles in my tummy, only Fire Whiskey could satisfy." James answered simply, in the most seducing voice he could produce.

"Err...Right then...why don't we get Sirius up to the Common Room" I suggested. He nodded and attempted to get Sirius up and standing on his two feet, but failed, Sirius continued to crawl around on all fours as he sniffed the grass like a dog. We tried several more times to get him to act like a normal human being, but to no avail. He's not a normal human being when he's sober, it's only worse when hes intoxicated.

I decided to try reverse psychology, "Sirius," I cooed, "Who's a good doggy? Who's a good puppy?"

"I AM!" he screeched. I was sure I would have a head ache by the end of the day.

"Does Sirius want a treat?" I continued to coo him, "Does he?"

"YES SIRIUS WANT TREAT!" He said sounding like a mix of a cave man and Scooby-Doo.

"OK, Padfoot, stand up and follow me, then you will get your treat." I commanded while he jumped all around. When I started walking away, he followed me like the little dog he really is. James walked beside me, keeping an eye on Sirius making sure he didn't do anything stupid. Sometimes it feels like we are a family, James and I were the parents, well...minus the meaningful relationship. Let me rephrase: Sometimes it felt like James and I have joint custody over Sirius, our immature man-child.

"No, no, Sirius," James scolded, "keep your clothes on."

Right when we entered the castle, James spotted Lily and bolted in her direction, leaving me with the mutt. In the meantime, Sirius thought it would be a good idea to take a little nap in the middle of the corridor full of students passing by. It was of no shock to anyone, but that still doesn't make it okay.

"Sirius!" I scolded him, "Get up now or there will be no treats for you!"

"Sorry, Momma." he replied bashfully and hugged my leg. He proceeded to follow me up the stairs, now behaving better than before, somehow under more control. Maybe the fire whiskey was wearing off. Once we got to the Fat Lady, I told her the password...

"Sitting Grindylows" I said aloud. She swung open, almost hitting Sirius, I held back a laugh as she granted us entrance. I told him go stay on the couch while I go his treats ready. I bolted up to the Girl's Dorms and started to brew. I made one potion to make him sober and another to help him sleep through his hangover. I had them both done in a matter of minutes considering I was second in our class to Snape, who is way underrated for his skills, by the way.

I scurried down the stairs to the Common Room, only to find that Sirius had his face mere inches from the burning flames of the fire. "SIRIUS!" I yelled, making him jerk his head around to look at me, "I brought you some treats!" My heart was beating a mile a minute. He really acts like a child. He can't be left alone!

"YAAAAAYY!!!! TREATS!!!" he shrieked. I handed him the first purple bubbling potion, he downed it in less that five seconds. This particular potion smelled and tasted good. The Sleeping Draught, on the other hand, was the complete opposite. So I added a peppermint flavoring, which was so strong, it changed the smell as well.

I guided him up the stairs and into the empty Boys Dorm. He jumped down on his bed and waited for me to give him the vile. He chugged this one in no time, too.

By this time, Sirius's drunken self was fading and his eyelids were becoming visibly heavier by the second. I was really good with detecting emotions, another significance that went along with being a metamorphagus.

I decided to stick around in the boy's filthy dorm, which, surprisingly, didn't smell that bad today. Despite the empty bottles, dirty clothes, and leaking cauldrons thrown carelessly around the room. Even Remus's small area was filled with junk and books and whatnot, which came as a slight shock based on how neatly he presents himself. Boys will be boys I guess.

I decided to lay down on James's bed and I begin browsing a Zonko's catalogue, but soon enough, I couldn't muster the strength to keep my eyes open and quickly fell asleep.
