Forever & Always
You looked at me with that bright smile. That was something I was not prepared for. Your hair was messy, but your eyes showed pure joy. That will always be a memory I will forever hold close. When you sat on the sandy beach right next to me that was the moment I knew I had changed.
"The water is too cold, but the sun is teasing us." You pointed out. I looked out towards the setting sun and shrugged. I thought you were strange. I thought that if I had ignored you, you would leave me alone. I was very wrong.
"Well, the water may freeze us to death, but let's jump in." You grabbed my hand and pulled me up. Your hands were so small. You jumped into the waves and pulled me along. Your long hair plastered onto your face as you laughed. I felt my heart stop.
"I am Jamie," you giggled. You gave me your hand expecting me to respond.
'I'm Toby.' That was the first day I met you. The first time I fell in love.
"I'm Toby." I smiled at you. You never looked boyish and I forgave that. I could tell that your heart was hurting and I wanted to make it better. That was the first thought I had when I saw you sitting alone. Toby fit you so well.
"Come on, when the sun sets, the jellyfish come out. We do not want to be in the water when that happens." I laughed. Your face changed from fear to pure terror. I have never seen anyone run out of the water faster than you did. I laughed so hard tears started to run down my face. I got out and we only had one towel. We barely knew each other, but that didn't stop us from sharing the same towel. You wrapped us up as we watched the sun go down. It was a sight for sore eyes.
"Do you want to go out sometime?" I asked when we grew silent. You blushed and I grew excited.
"I do if you would let me have your number." You answered back. We exchanged numbers.
"Don't text me, call me. That is a home line. I don't have a cell phone." I explained. You looked so confused and shocked.
"What? Cell phones are not my thing." I laughed. That night I fell asleep thinking of you.
I woke up the next morning completely disorganized. I had never met a girl like you. I picked up my phone and dialled your number. It rang and as soon as it did you picked it up.
"Top of the morning!" You greeted happily. I couldn't help but laugh.
"Morning," I responded.
"I have a whole thing planned today, meet me at the same spot we met in twenty." You clicked off. I glanced at the mirror and panicked. I had never showered as fast as I did that day, in my whole life. After my quick shower I ran down the stairs, my dad looked at me and asked. I barely answered only saying that I will be gone all day. I raced to the spot and before I reached it I saw you. You were angelic. Your long brown hair trailed down your back. You were wearing a white shirt with shorts that made you look perfect. I walked up to you and you shushed me. You pointed to the beach waterline. Two turtles were laying together on the sand sleeping. I barely looked at the turtles. You were memorized by the two animals. I held my breath.
I glanced at you and smiled.
"Their names are Julia and Marco." I made their names up on the spot. You smiled.
"That is my mother's name." I leaned my head on your shoulder. You froze so I moved a little. You grabbed my hand.
"Where are we going today?" You asked. I stood up and winked.
"You'll have to find out Romeo." I pulled you towards the boardwalk and ran in between people. I could hear you apologizing as we ran.
"You're so apologetic." I teased.
"Well we are running through a crowd of course I am apologetic!" You responded. I only laughed. We made it to the amusement park where I planned our day together. We went onto the tilt-a-whirl first. You were so pale even before we got onto the ride.
"I am going to get sick," you whimpered.
"Calm down, you'll be fine just hold my hand." The ride started to spin and I laughed. You looked so sick. The ride stopped and you bolted. You found the nearest trash bin not being occupied by others and threw up. I rubbed your back gently as you heaved.
"You are so going to pay," you stammered between heaves. I giggled. I pulled you to a long line for the rollercoaster. You did not look as pale this time. We waited for some time, talking about our families. I learned that your parents divorced that summer. That was why you were in Maine. I smiled thankful, that one spilt brought us together. You asked me why I smiled. I told you it was because I had a secret.
I looked at you as you smiled mischievously. I shook my head and chuckled. Our turn for the rollercoaster finally came. It was time. So we both sat in the back cart. Our hands clasped together, seats locked and our minds in a buzz. The ride started and you screamed in fear while I laughed in complete glee. The ride when under and over, but your screams continued. The ride came to a stop and we got off. You giggled and hugged me.
"You wanted to go on the rollercoaster, but you screamed the whole time," I joked. Your eyes were so bright.
"Very funny come on, our date can't be complete without cotton candy!" You cheered. I followed you to a cotton candy stand and we shared one pink fluff. We ran to different rides, the swings, a haunted house and many other rides. The day was wasting away, but we didn't care. The evening was coming and our last ride of the day was the Ferris Wheel.
"This is the best view of the small town." You explained while looking out the window. We had barely left the ground so I teased you. We stopped at the top of the ride and looked down. The town was beautiful. I looked at you and the sun hit you perfectly lighting you up like an angel.
"It's beautiful," you whispered.
"You are beautiful." You looked at me and blushed. We didn't kiss or hug just stared at each other. It was most then I could ever ask for.
The ride was over and we walked home. The silence between us was not awkward, it was peaceful.
"If we could do this again I wouldn't mind," you sighed
"Me neither," I agreed. The walk back was so calming. I took my shoes off and pulled you onto the beach. With our shoes in our hands, we walked along the shoreline. I stopped and looked at the ground. It was the perfect time to write in the sand so I did. I bent down and traced your name. Toby.
"There your name is written in the sand." I giggled. You walked over and wrote my name. Putting our names into a heart.
"Forever," you whispered.
"And always."
