Max watched the smoke rings trail off into the sunset. He was sitting on the doorstep after his mum had shouted at him to "Please smoke that foul thing outside!"

He squinted his eyes. He swore he could see a figure coming this way. No, just his imagination. It was a shadow.

Max looked again. There was someone coming. They were getting closer, stumbling.

"Effy?" He called. "Is that you?"

"Max." Came the voice of his girlfriend."Max." She said softly.

He ran up his driveway. Effy was stumbling toward him. Max supported her.

"What are you doing here? What happened."

"I should have told you." Effy sobbed. "Is should have told you the moment I knew I was falling in love."

"Okay, Effy, what is it?" Max questioned her. "What does it have to do with falling in love?"

"I'm a vampire," Effy whispered softly.

"What? That's not funny, Effs. I was worried about you." Max took his hand away from where it had been holding Effy up.

"Not. Joking." Effy managed before she toppled over.

"OK" Max shook his head. "hypothetically, if you are telling the truth. Explain."

"I'm the leader of a small coven." Effy breathed. "Other vampires out to get me."

"And..." Max said. He still didn't believe Effy. She was probably drunk, but she needed him to listen."

"Vampires only fall in love once. Never with other vampires. We call it mates. The vampire then turns their mate. If they don't within a year and a day they die."

"So you're saying you are going to die if I don't become a vampire?" Max asked, incredulous. He almost believed her. Effy wasn't exactly good at thinking up stories. "Or you're saying you're breaking up with me because you found your mate?"

"I'm saying." Effy gasped. "That the sun is setting on the 366th day of me being in love with you.

"Max, I'm about to die."

The thing was, Max had read so many fantasy books. He had always wanted an adventure. So he said.

"Turn me."

"What, Max, no. This is a horrible life. I came to..." Effy broke off, coughing. Blood came out of her mouth.

"You came to Turn me," Max said, not believing that he was believing this. "So do."

He looked up at Effy.
