Seek Joy in Trialing Times: Create a Memory Jar


This post is going to be very short.

If you find yourself focusing on the negative parts of your day, I urge you to consider this quick activity.

Consider creating a memory jar.

When one of a hundred things go wrong, humans have the tendency to dwell on the one thing that went wrong, rather than the 99 things that went right. Most of the time this thinking isn't intentional.

Bad habits are difficult to break. They require, repetitive, conscious efforts of correction.

Here's a few short steps that I think might help:

Get yourself any kind of jar.Decorate it in any way you please. Channel your inner child, and focus on creativity rather than pragmatism. Choose colours and symbols that speak to your soul.To get it started, write down as many happy memories you can conjure on individual pieces of paper. Place them in the jar.As days go by, add to your collection of happy moments.Place your jar somewhere that you'll see everyday. Even if you're not re-reading the listed memories, seeing the filled jar, will be an unconscious reminder of the happiness you've lived and continue to live.On your worst days. When you're feeling down or find yourself dwelling on the negative, open the jar. Open the jar, pick random memories and let yourself relive your good moments.
