Flare Lis

The sky was blanketed by dark clouds that cried on all of us. I could feel the cool, wetness of the dark green grass between my bare toes as I crossed the field of stones and covered bones. My black cardigan flowed behind me in the light spring breeze. I felt a drop land on the tip of my nose and expanded my umbrella above me. I glanced around to see the other members of the unfortunate reunion repeat my actions. Slowly, one by one all of us stopped and circled around a metal home and a matching hole. I felt a drop drip down my cheek and looked up confused. Reaching up my face I found more following.

My father reached for my hand. I pulled away fast and grabbed onto my older brother's arm. I felt his confused gaze stare down at me. I glared at my father who slowly turned around and walked towards my grandmother. "Bell...", my brother started, "you know it's not his fault it happened. Right?" My gaze shifted to where my mother lay. "You weren't there Ian. You didn't see what happened." We slowly walked towards our mother's enclosed body. Ian lifted his hand and placed a newly cut lily on top of the coffin. I followed but placed a dahlia instead. It was her favorite flower.

We returned to our home shortly after the funeral. I didn't want to say goodbye to anyone. I didn't want to hear their fake apologies and "it'll get better". How could it have gotten better? As soon as I reached the front door I bolted for my bedroom ignoring the yells from my father and brother. I slammed my bedroom door behind me and turned the lock. The walls were a deep blue color. My queen sized bed laid in between the only two windows. It was tucked in red sheets and a heavy black comforter. My selves were decorated with hundreds of books. All of which took me a majority of my life to read. My deep, wooden dresser held all of my neatly folded clothes. Pictures of myself and my best friend Addy, magazine clippings of my idol, Aaron Halfield, and various of my own paintings littered my walls.

I walked into my bathroom, ripping my towel off the door as I passed through. After relieving myself of my drenched dress, I turned on the water and stepped into the shower. As the hot water covered the glass door in steam, I slowly forgot the day's earlier activities and started thinking about the later patrol I was to partake in. Patrols were the only time I had to myself. It was the only time I felt truly free from my father's yelling and my brother's concerns. When I was outside hopping across the smooth roofs of my neighbor's homes, or flying across the sky under the sun, nothing about my normal life mattered.

My freedom started two years before my mother's death. I was walking through the wood, my painter's bag trailing behind me. I had found a beautiful clearing a few days before that I felt needed to be seen by everyone. As I approached the clearing, a smile drew itself on my face. The sun gleamed down on the clearing and plenty of flowers danced in the light. The butterflies and beetles seemed to join the celebration as well. I walked to the center of the clearing and set down my bag. At some point while painting, my eyes wandered to a sparkle coming from a stream nearby. I walked over to the stream and peered in. The sparkle I had seen came from a singular fox tail pendant. I reached my hand into the cold water and picked the pendant out of the water. The chain was still connected and the pendant still kept it's shine. It was warm and smooth to the touch. I unclasped it and placed it on my neck, peering at my reflection In the water with a smile.

The temperature rapidly got warmer and it felt as though the pendant was burning into my skin. I looked up to see the sun's rays move to shine down on me. The light got brighter, and brighter to the point of blinding me. When I opened my eyes, my reflection had completely changed. My usual wavy black hair now had orange and red in it and yellow tips. It had been put up in a high-ponytail and came down to my knees. My bottle green eyes now had gold and red specks in them. My normal boring clothes were replaced by a black bodysuit with a fiery overthrow, a pair of brown shorts held on by a black belt, a pair of thigh high boots, and a pair of 3 finger gloves. The upper portion of my face was now covered by a light orange mask with white tips that looked like fox ears. My hair was in the form of a fox tail.

After my transformation, I took the necklace off and ran home. After hours of deliberation, I had decided to tell Addy about it. Together we had figured out that along with the visible changes, I could jump pretty high, run for longer than normal without getting tired, and my hands were hot as fire hence the heat resistance gloves. I found that if I took off the gloves, I could cause a room or an object to heat up so much that it would set fire. I also found that the gold specks in my eyes would light up and illuminate a dark room if I couldn't see.

I wrapped my soft towel around my body and stepped out of the shower. Quickly getting dressed in a simple hoodie and leggings outfit, I rushed back into my bedroom and brushed my hair. I smiled at the small box on my desk. Reaching for it and opening, the pendant called for me to wear it once again. I put it on and felt the familiar warm light cover my body. The warmth brought the feeling of happiness back to me. I set my iPod on my speaker and played some music to ward off the other members of the house. I opened the window and leaned out to smell the air. It smelt sweet and the sun was peeking from behind the clouds. I smiled at the source of my power and looked back at my room once more before jumping out onto the roof.

Jumping across the roofs, I made my way around town looking for anything to occupy myself with. Generally I had spent my superhero life saving cats from trees or chasing after thieves. Otherwise, I just volunteered. In the past couple of years of having these powers, I never once had to use them for something serious.

I made my way south of town where the sun had trouble shining. "Good afternoon Mrs. Stevenson!", I called out. Mrs. Stevenson was sitting near her sad garden. The flowers had long since wilted. "Oh hello dear," Mrs. Stevenson replied. She seemed distracted. "Is everything alright?" I had made my way to her and rested my hand on her shoulder. "It's just these disappointing gardens my dear. Nothing a certain hero needs to worry about," she turned to face me and winked. "I'm no hero Ma'am. Heroes save people. All I do is help grow gardens and warm people up," I said crossing my arms. Mrs. Stevenson snorted and waved to her garden. I took the hint and pointed my right uncovered fingers and directed the sun hidden behind the clouds to shine down on the little garden. Shortly, the flowers were sprouting once again. Mrs. Stevenson huffed and motioned for me to follow her into her home.

"Mrs. Stevenson, I really do need to be getting back," I followed her hesitantly. "Oh I won't hold you long. I just wanted to show you something." She guided me to the study. There was a giant old book laid out on the desk. She sat down and flipped a few pages. I hovered over her shoulder and saw Flare Lis on the page. Me. "Mrs. Stevenson?" I gaped at her. "I found this in the attic the other day." She glanced back at me. "I figured it would be something you would be interested in taking a look at?" She slammed the book closed and handed it to me. I thanked her and said my goodbyes.

The next day at school, I met Addy in home room to show her the book Mrs. Stevenson found. "So, she just found it lying in her attic? What was something like this doing there?" Addy asked skimming through the book. "I'm not sure. There's more heroes in there than just Flare Lis such as Grey Wolf, Scarlet Wing, and quite a few others. Maybe Mrs. Stevenson is a descendant of one of them?" I suggested. Just then, our teacher walked into the classroom with a boy following close behind her. He had black hair and was decently tall. He held his backpack close to his chest and stayed close to the teacher. "Ok class. Please settle down." My teacher started. Addy and I sat down at our seats and waited for the teacher to continue. "Everyone, please welcome Hyde Cada. He's a transfer student joining us from Maine. I hope you all will welcome him with open arms." We all nodded in agreement. "Hyde, you can have a seat next to Jake London." I watched Jake wave the transfer student over.

Jake, Addy and I have been close friends for a while now. "Hey man, welcome." Jake shook his hand and they sat down. Addy tapped Hyde's shoulder and welcomed him as well. I bent over my notebook and doodled. I knew that the new kid had stolen a glance at my direction. I quickly glanced up in time to see him flip his head to the front of the class. I chuckled and went back to doodling. The end of the day came and Hyde still hadn't made any other friends other than Jake and Addy. "You should introduce yourself." I spun around to look at my best friend. "What? You're joking right?" I asked. "No I'm serious. He doesn't have anyone else to talk to besides Jake and I. It would probably make him pretty happy knowing someone else wants to be friends with him." I thought about what she said and sighed. She did have a point. "Fine. I'll see you later." I waved to her and made my way towards the black haired boy.

"Hi. My name's Bella. You?"
