Pilot S1 E1
EXT. DRIVEWAY - NIGHT
CHASE CLEMENTS, 15, nerdy, youthful, wearing a white shirt, khakis, and black sandals, assists his sister TAYLOR CLEMENTS, 11, slim build, wearing footy pajamas with a hoodie, and converse, helping her mom SKYLENE (Sky) CLEMENTS, 40, a gorgeous Latina with dark hair and brown eyes, unload groceries from their car when another car pulls up on the other side of the road in the driveway of a vacant house.
Behind the small truck, a giant truck pulls up. The driver jumps out and assists a man, DR GALILEO (Gal) JEFFCOATE, looking to be in his early 40s, with his son, a young, mysterious teen known as JACKSON JEFFCOATE, remove heavy equipment from the car into the vacated house. Chase and his sister stare across the street at the odd group. With something big in his arms, the young boy glances across the street at Chase. Chase can't look away. Taylor taps Chase on the shoulder, and Chase, coming out of his trance, turns his attention to Taylor.
TAYLOR
Those groceries don't move by themselves, dumbass.
CHASE
I'm not a dumbass.
TAYLOR
Whatever.
Chase rolls his eyes, makes his way into the house, carries a bag through the living room and into the kitchen, and sets the groceries on the counter. Two young twin boys, HARRISON and MASON CLEMENTS, blonde haired and blue eyed twins, hand Skylene canned goods. She places them into the semi-empty pantry.
Taylor emerges into the kitchen. All three look out through the street-lit kitchen window; the trucker drives off, leaving the man and his son off to the side of the road. Chase helps shove groceries into the fridge, glancing ever so slightly at the man and his son. A small truck sits under a dimmed street light by the home. The father and son return to the house, and the family unpacks the groceries.
CHASE
(to his mother)
Did dad tell you we were getting new neighbors?
Skylene huffs.
HARRISON
Daddy!
Harrison pumps his fist in the air.
SKY
Your father doesn't tell me much about that stuff anymore.
Chase's eyes drop, then he puts groceries away.
INT. BEDROOM - MORNING
Chase sits on his bed, staring out the window at his new neighbors. Outside, JACKSON JEFFCOATE, 15, with deep brown eyes, kicks a soccer ball around in his front yard, dribbling the ball on his foot and managing trick shots across the street and into Chase's yard. Chase huffs, racing down the stairs and out the front door. Jackson crosses the road, and Chase picks up the ball, weighing it in his hand and studying it.
JACKSON
Hey, Chase!
CHASE
Jackson?!
Jackson walks up to Chase's grass lawn. Chase tossed Jackson the ball, and he snagged it under his foot.
CHASE
How have you been?
Jackson scoffs.
JACKSON
It's going, I guess.
There's an awkward silence before Chase speaks again.
CHASE
When did you move in?
JACKSON
Last night. I saw you spying on us too.
CHASE (MUMBLING)
I wasn't spying. I just couldn't see it was you.
JACKSON
I'm joking. My dad and I arrived around 10:30. You're welcome to come over and hang out once we're settled into the home.
CHASE
I'm so happy you're back.
JACKSON
I'm happy to be back too.
CHASE
CHASE Gotta go.
Chase wanders off toward his house. Jackson kicks the ball at Chase into his feet.
JACKSON
Me too. How about this evening after dinner?
Chase turns around, kicking the ball back softly. Jackson traps the ball with his foot again.
CHASE
What?
JACKSON
Come over this evening.
Chase's eyebrows raise, and he crosses his arms.
CHASE
You're not going to murder me,
right? Jackson winks.
JACKSON
Depends.
CHASE
Pffft. Sure. I'll be there around
six if that's okay. Jackson's grin grows.
JACKSON
Sure.
CHASE
See you, Jackson.
Chase salutes Jackson and walks off into the house. Jackson grabs his ball and walks back across the street, playing with his soccer ball.
INT. GAL'S GARAGE - DAY
Galileo is busy setting up his lab in the garage. Jackson wanders in to meet his father. Gal glances at Jackson and then peels off his glasses.
GAL
Was that Chase?
Jackson rearranges some experiments on a table from a box and nods.
JACKSON
Yeah, I invited him over.
Gal's eyes widened.
GAL
You should have asked first.
Jackson sighs, placing the styrofoam box on the floor.
JACKSON
I assumed you would be okay with it.
Gal's shoulders tense, and he rolls them out.
GAL
Don't ever assume anything. But, I guess it's good that you already have a friend.
Jackson breathes deeply and lets it out.
GAL
Don't bring him in here. These
experiments are dangerous, and I barely trust you with them, and neither does his father.
Jackson huffs.
JACKSON
Whatever.
Jackson shrugs and walks off back inside. Gal follows, shutting the door.
INT. ANDREW'S KITCHEN - DAY
Chase sits at the counter, scarfing down a takeout box of chow-mein and orange chicken with a fork. His sister stares at him in total disgust and amusement. Chase belches loud, and his sister's hate turns to horror.
TAYLOR You're such a pig.
Harrison and Mason snort like pigs while stuffing chicken nuggets into their mouths.
CHASE
I don't think I asked for your opinion. Also, stop it guys.
Chase takes another fork full of Chow-mein and a sip of off- brand Happy Pit-bull root beer. Taylor leans back in his chair with her arms folded over her chest. Skylene walks into the room with a briefcase and a purse.
SKY (TO CHASE)
Chase, watch your sister and brothers. I'm going to be late for my meeting.
Chase burps loudly again, tightens his soda bottle cap, and finishes his food.
CHASE
Bye, mom.
Taylor rolls her eyes.
TAYLOR
Bye, mom.
Skylene smiles at her kids and walks out. Chase waits a moment, then jumps from his seat.
CHASE
I'm going across the street.
Jackson invited me over for a hangout.
TAYLOR
Jackson's back?
CHASE
Yeah.
Taylor slurps down her chow-mein on chopsticks with glee.
TAYLOR
Can I come?!
CHASE (INTERRUPTING TAYLOR)
We're going to do guy stuff, and I doubt you want to be there. Besides, you're an annoying eleven year old.
Taylor groans.
TAYLOR
Read between the lines, jerk face.
Taylor flips her brother off.
CHASE
Bye, Taylor.
Chase walks off towards the doorway.
INT. JACKSON'S HOME - NOON
Chase wanders next door, knocking twice and ringing the doorbell. No answer.
CHASE
Jackson? Are you at home?
Still no answer. Chase wanders off, walking around to the side of the house. He spots the garage's side door peeking open. A loud mechanical humming comes from inside, and he wanders into the garage.
CHASE
(Calling into the doorway)
Jackson? Mr. Jeffcoate?
He takes a few steps forward, looking around into the spacious garage. Then, he trips over a wire, and knocks into a bunch of test tubes, splashing them all over himself. He wipes experiments on his shirt, a dizzying feeling fills his head. We zip in and out between Andrew Clements's beam zap from the 1980s, as Chase collapsing to the floor; his eyes flutter shut, and everything...
INT. LIVING ROOM - NIGHT
TIME LAPSE - TWO HOURS
Chase sits up; an ice pack clings to his forehead. Gal and Jackson hover over Chase as his vision fades into focus.
GAL
Are you okay?
Chase slaps the ice pack to his thighs, and Gal and Jackson back away.
I think so.GAL
What were you doing in my garage?
My machine could have killed you. Chase huffs.
CHASE
I was looking for Jackson and heard
a noise.
Galileo sighs.
GAL
Next time, just ask.
Jackson nods. Chase tries to sit up. Gal and Jackson push him back.
JACKSON
Stay down and relax. You'll be fine.
Chase tries to stand again, but Jackson pushes him back down.
CHASE
I want to go home.
JACKSON
You can go in a little while, but trust me. You're going to want to lie down.
Chase relaxes on the couch with a sigh.
CHASE
Fine, but if something happens to
me, my mom or dad will kill you. Galileo moans.
GAL
You can leave, but let me know if
you have any weird symptoms. Chase looks confused.
CHASE
Sure, whatever.
Chase pushes off the couch, stumbles to the door, ignores Gal, and takes off the door to his home across the street.
INT. CHASE'S HOME - DAY
Taylor waits for his brother at the door, letting Chase in. Chase's head pulses and pounds, his vision flickers in and out, and tunnel vision kicks in as he stumbles past his sister to the kitchen.
TAYLOR
That was a long time. Were they trying to murder you or something?
CHASE
Shut up, Erin. My head is killing me.
TAYLOR
Are you drunk... ooh? Mom is going to kill you... That is unless dad beats her to it--
CHASE
--Shut up already. Geez.
Chase wanders into the kitchen and tries to get a glass of water but can't seem to stay coordinated, so instead, he wanders off up the stairs to his bedroom. Chase's door slams, and he slides into his bed, gets comfy under the covers, and falls asleep.
INT. CHASE'S BEDROOM - DAY
Chase's eyes flutter open. He hovers high above his bed, roughly five feet and halfway to the ceiling, feeling the airbrush on his bare chest and boxers. He flips in the air, facing his bed below him. Chase looks shocked.
CHASE
How am I doing this?
Chase flips to his back again and tries to steady himself. He counts out loud, taking deep breaths each time he recites a number. It's just like his therapist taught him. Outside his doorway, Taylor pounds the door.
TAYLOR
Get up! Mom told me you would take me to the Mall today.
CHASE
(Mumbling to himself)
I'm in trouble. Chase looks to the door.
CHASE
I'm preoccupied at the moment. Besides, the Mall doesn't open until ten.
Chase looks down at his alarm clock sitting at his bedside. He shifts in the air and holds out his arms, stabilizing himself again. The clock reads 10:05 am.
TAYLOR
It is ten, dumb-ass.
CHASE
Hey, that's not very nice.
Taylor huffs behind the door.
TAYLOR
I'm coming in.
CHASE
I'm not feeling like myself... I-I'm, uh... naked?
There's a long pause of silence.
TAYLOR
You're bluffing. I'm coming in.
The door handle curls, and Chase closes his eyes and focuses. Without noticing, he drops to the bed. His room is a mess. Chase hops under the covers, sliding them to his chest, and sighs. Taylor pulls open the door and walks in.
ERIN
Jerk face.
Taylor walks out, and Chase sighs in relief. Then he rolls over, slamming his hand on his nightstand, and the corner cracks.
TAYLOR
(Shouting down the hallway)
I'm telling mom about last night.
Chase huffs, staring at the piece of splintered wood on the floor. Taylor pouts and walks out.
INT. BATHROOM - DAY
Chase rinses his toothbrush, puts it in the cabinet, and suddenly starts floating again.
Skylene knocks outside the door, and Chase scrambles to grab anything to hoist him down. He grabs the countertop, but a chunk rips off with his super strength. He grabs a can of hairspray and gives it a spritz. The can of hairspray shoots him up, and he smacks his head on the roof.
SKY
What was that thump, Chase?
CHASE
I-I tripped?
Chase grimaces sheepishly, as if his mom can see him.
SKY
Thank you for taking your sister.
Chase scoffs.
CHASE
Okay?
TAYLOR
Chase!
Chase rolls his eyes.
CHASE
Okay!
SKY
I want you ready in half an hour.
Stephanie walks away. Chase shuts his eyes to calm himself down and falls from the sky to the bathroom floor, hitting his head on the toilet.
INT. MALL - DAY
In a cheap beauty store, Chase, wearing an Ultraman t-shirt, jeans, and high-top sneakers, waits for Taylor, wearing a band shirt, dark jeans, and converse, who is inside the store. Taylor walks out, and Chase huffs, joining his sister's side as they walk.
Nearby, an glass at a employees.
CHASE
Are we almost done?
TAYLOR
I may have a few more stores to hit before dark.
CHASE
You're kidding, right?
Alarm sound, and a robber with a mask smashes jewelry store and points a gun between the two
ROBBER
Nobody moves, or they get a bullet in their skull.
CHASE
The robber grabs what jewelry he can and stuffs it in a bag. People scatter, and Chase gets an idea. He pats Taylor on the shoulder, giving strict instructions.
CHASE
Go into a nearby store and hide.
You've got that? Taylor moans.
ERIN
What are you going to do? You're not Ultraman...
Chase flips his hood over his head and sighs.
CHASE (RAISING HIS VOICE)
Go, Taylor, Now!
Taylor rolls her eyes and takes off into a nearby clothing store. Once the coast is clear, Chase takes off into the sky while hiding his face and floats in front of the robbed jewelry store, where the robber still grabs items. In the background, the two employees look mortified as they slide to the floor, and people wander out, taking videos on their cellphones and staring.
CHASE
You do not take those, are you,
because that's stealing?
The robber turns his attention to Chase. Chase leans against the railing of the top floor and watches it crumble as he rapidly descends. Then, he floats up in the air, staring at the robber. The thief points his gun at Chase, and he sucks in a sharp breath.
ROBBER
That's a nice party trick, kid.
Who'd you learn that from? Ultra- man?
CHASE
I kind of woke up like this.
The robber nods, tapping the barrel of the gun against his palm.
ROBBER
Oh, nice.
The gun clicks, and the robber grins.
ROBBER
It's a shame I'm going to shoot
you.
Andrew bows his head, and a burst of adrenaline kicks in.
CHASE
Try me.
A bullet flies across the Mall, straight into Chase's chest, bouncing off and hitting the ground two stories below. The robber pushes his finger against the trigger, and Chase squeezes his eyes shut. Chase's eyes peek open, and he sighs.
CHASE
Whew. I panicked for a moment.
Chase drops to ground level with the robber. The robber's grin drops, and he turns the barrel on the two store employees.
ROBBER
(demanding)
Stand up!
The two employees stand cautiously with their hands in the air.
CHASE
Leave them alone. If it's the
Jewelry you want, you already have it.
ROBBER
What kind of cheesy hero bullshit
is that, kid?
Chase shrugs.
CHASE
Yeah, I blame my father.
The robber turns the gun on Chase again. Chase bites his tongue, and the robber turns the gun back to the employees. Store employee one, male and tall, eyes the counter. His hand slips under, and he presses a panic button. The alarm whistles again. The robber growls, and the gun clicks.
ROBBER
Do you want to fucking die today?
The robber adjusts his hold on the gun and employee number two, a young female, slips her hand under the table, hitting the alarm. The robber points his gun at her, and a bullet flies from the weapon in slow motion as Chase takes off in superhuman speed, swiftly rushing to both employees' aid.
The remaining glass shatters, and Chase knocks the employees to the ground on top of one another while the bullet pierces the wall. Chase pulls off the floor and dusts himself off.
ROBBER
You are incredibly stupid, kid.
The robber raises the gun, pointing it at Chase again. Chase takes off also, full speed; the robber, frozen in time, as Chase yanks the gun from his hands and places it on the ground. Chase halts, and the world comes back to life. The robber looks to his left, where the gun lies on the floor.
ROBBER
What the hell.
Chase shrugs. ANDREW CLEMENTS, a group of F.B.I., police, and swat barge through the mall, guns drawn on the robber.
ANDREW
Hands up, Gerard.
The robber throws his hands in the air and drops to his knees. A cop throws handcuffs on Gerard while a dozen officers turn their guns on Chase. Chase lifts his hands in the air to surrender, and employee number one, now on his feet with his co-worker, puts his hands out.
Andrew maintains eye contact with his son, Chase, under the hoodie.
EMPLOYEE #1
Don't shoot. He saved us.
The police put their guns in their holders. Chase nods; the world around him freezes again, and he disappears into the parking lot with incredible speed. Chase whips out his phone and texts his sister.
INTERCUT - TEXT MESSAGE
CHASE
They have the guy in custody. I'm outside in the north part of the Mall.
TAYLOR
What happened?
Chase chuckles.
CHASE
Some loser guy saved the day.
INT. MALL - WOMAN'S RESTROOM - DAY
Taylor emerges from the women's bathroom stall in a retail store and walks out of the bathroom towards the exit.
INT. JACKSON'S HOUSE - DAY
TIME-LAPSE - THREE HOURS
Jackson sits in a small living room watching old reruns of Underdog When Breaking news flashes across a tv screen. A news anchor reports the aftermath of the scene from the Mall. The headline announces a successful fight between a super and a robber.
NEWS ANCHOR #1
Breaking News: A new super has saved two young jewelry store employees from what could have been a fatal robbery. Who is this mysterious super, where did he come from, and what's his connection to Ultraman? Stay tuned for more next...
The doorbell rings, and the television clicks off; Jackson walks over and pulls the door open. Chase stands in the doorway, leaning against the side of the home, grinning.
CHASE
Hey, Jackson? Where's your dad?
Jackson looks confused.
JACKSON
Why?
CHASE
Remember when your dad told me to tell him if I have any weird symptoms?
Jackson is still confused.
JACKSON
Yeah? Why?
CHASE
Take me inside for this one and sit
down too.
JACKSON
What happened?
Jackson huffs, irritable.
CHASE
I have, uh, I think I might have
superpowers.
Chase looks surprised, and he pulls Chase inside.
JACKSON
You what?
(beat)
You mean, that was you on the television?
Chase looks confused.
CHASE
Possibly? Why? What happened?
JACKSON (EXCITED)
You freaking kicked ass. My father is going to kill both of us when he finds out you have superpowers.
CHASE
I'll say.
Chase lifts in the air. Jackson's eyes widen, and he grabs Jackson's foot, pulling him down.
JACKSON
What the hell. Get down before
someone sees you. Chase lands on the ground.
INT. LABORATORY - DAY
Gal leans over Chase with large bifocals flashing a bright light in Chase's eyes; Chase's pupils dilate when the light hits, and he covers his face with his arm. Galileo pulls up his headset and sighs.
CHASE
I'm bulletproof, I can fly and run
fast and have potential super-strength.
GAL
I don't need you running around with these destructive superpowers, Chase.
Jackson shrugs.
JACKSON
He's right, you know.
Jackson chews on his cheeks and observes Gal typing statistics on his laptop.
CHASE
I mean, shoot! Who can say they
have superpowers like this? Galileo shakes his head.
GAL
Language. Don't take this the wrong
way, Chase, but unlike Ultra-man, you are no hero. These powers are dangerous, mainly if you use them the wrong way.
Chase frowns.
CHASE
What if I figure out how to control
them?
GAL
You'll adapt to using your powers
more often, and things can go very wrong.
Chase huffs.
CHASE
So, I'm useless.
GAL
You're not useless. I will have to
run a few tests and figure out how your supergenes work.
CHASE
So, I'm a lab-rat now?
Jackson slams his hand into Chase's shoulder.
JACKSON
Nope. You'll be alright. Trust me.
INT. BEDROOM - DAY
Chase digs under his bed and pulls out a box full of old collectible comic books he's stashed. He grins, staring at the first issue at the top of the pile, Ultra-man.
CHASE
Incredible.
He opens the protective sleeve and slides the comic book out. Chase floats to the ceiling with the comic, settling into the corner of his room, and flips through the comic.
He hears a KNOCK on the door, and he floats down to the bed, casually sprawled out on the sheets like Peter Pan, reading his comic before his mom walks in.
CHASE
Hey, mom? What's up?
SKY
Nothing, just checking on you. I
wanted to make sure you two were safe at the mall today. I heard about the robbery, and--
CHASE
Yeah, mom. We were safe.
SKY
Hmmm. Did you hear about that new
mysterious superhero?
CHASE
Yep. He was sort of a loser. Taylor walks by, and snorts.
TAYLOR
Kind of like you.
CHASE
Shut up, Taylor.Sky glares at Chase, who gestures to his sister. Skylene takes one last look at Chase and closes the door.
Chase grins, flips a page in his comic book, and floats in the air again. He swoops up, pushing fast into the air, and smacks his head on the roof. Chase chuckles.
CHASE
Superpowers. Huh.
Chase turns another page in the comic book.
EXT. NEIGHBORHOOD - DAY
Chase and Jackson walk to school on the cold August morning with their backpacks. They stop at a red light, about to cross the street, when Chase taps Jackson's arm.
CHASE
I'm like a Comic Book Hero but in
real life.
Jackson huffs, and the light turns green. The two boys are across the street together. They turn down a neighborhood street.
JACKSON
These superpowers aren't a toy.
Besides, you got lucky saving those mall employees the other day.
CHASE
Do you honestly think that was
luck?
Chase looks around, and he lifts a foot into the air when the coast is clear. Jackson weighs Chase down by his shoulders. Chase grounds himself, and two cars drive by.
JACKSON
Your accident was a mistake.
CHASE
You're kidding?
JACKSON
But, it's pretty fascinating...
They stop at a stop sign, check their surroundings, and cross.
CHASE
My superpowers?
JACKSON
Yeah...
Chase grins.
CHASE
Besides, my dad is FBI. I could use
my powers to help them, just like Ultra-man does.
Chase's grin grows. Jackson huffs.
JACKSON
Hmm. My dad works for them too and,
well, knows your dad.
CHASE
Your dad knows my dad. And my dad
knows about Ultraman. It's a win, win.
Jackson freezes, amused.
JACKSON
My grandfather worked with your dad
way back, too.
CHASE
Yeah, and now your grandpa is
locked away somewhere in a government prison for trying to replicate Ultraman's superpowers and giving it to the Mafia.
JACKSON
Yeah, you lose your mind with one
wrong smack to the head. Chase cringes.
CHASE
Do you still think your father
works with my dad?
JACKSON
Jackson tries to hide an expression with a poker face.
CHASE
Do I?
JACKSON
How much does your father tell you
about Ultraman?
CHASE
Not much, why?
Jackson shrugs.
JACKSON
I don't know. Maybe it's the fact
that you're running around with superpowers? Whatever you do, don't tell anyone else about them.
CHASE
Yeah, my mom would freak out, and
Taylor would probably have a field day blackmailing me. Chase huffs at the thought. They continue walking with their backpacks, following a group of kids on the other side of the pathway, ignoring them.
INT. HIGH SCHOOL - DAY
Chase stuffs his books into his locker with Jackson by his side. JAMES SHELTON, broad and athletic, and Chase's other neighbor, looks their way and wanders over.
JAMES
Sup, Chase. Who's the newbie?
JACKSON
It's Jackson.
James chuckles.
JAMES
I didn't ask you, did I?
A group of Jocks forms a circle around the two boys.
CHASE
Come on. Don't be a dick, Jamie.
James' eyes drift to Chase.
JAMES
What did you say, Freak?
There's a brief silence. Jackson pleads silently with his eyes for Chase not to do anything stupid. Jamie and Chase are face-to-face.
Chase sighs.
CHASE
I said, leave him alone.
James chuckles, licking his chapped lips. So do the jocks standing behind him.
JAMES
Or what?
Chase and James glare at one another, challenging each other with locked eyes. The overhead bell rings, and James shoves Andrew into the lockers behind him.
JAMES
You're not even worth it. I can snap you like a toothpick. See you after school, neighbor.
INT. JACKSON'S DINING TABLE - NIGHT
Chase and Jackson sit at the dining table, snacking on sloppy Joe burgers and fries. A soda sits to the side.
JACKSON
Thanks for not causing a scene at
school with your, you know. Jackson pauses. Chase sighs.
CHASE
Superpowers?
Jackson smacks his lips together.
JACKSON
Yeah.
Jackson pushes his glasses back into place on his nose.
JACKSON
You still have a lot of work to do
with your powers.
Jackson takes a French fry, dips it in ketchup, and eats it. Gal rounds the corner into the dining table.
GAL
I agree with Jackson. If you want
to do anything with these powers, you have to learn how to control them. I don't trust you yet.
CHASE
For what? Am I going to put these
powers to good use like Ultraman, or what?
Galileo sighs.
JACKSON
I don't know about that one.
Jackson and Chase take a bite of their burgers.
CHASE
Really?
GAL
This was a bad idea.
CHASE AND JACKSON
What?
Gal laughs to himself.
GAL
Letting the two of you hang
together or whatever you call it. If your father knew you have...
Galileo stops himself.
CHASE
Have what? Superpowers?
JACKSON
Give it a few days, dad. We'll be
the best of friends.
Chase smirks and rolls his eyes. Galileo sighs.
GAL
I'm more concerned about the
trouble the two of you will get into with Chase's superpowers.
Chase shrugs, taking a sip and a bite of French fries. Jackson slips from his seat and pats Chase's shoulder as he passes.
CHASE
I'll be fine, Dr. Jeffcoate. Trust
me. I have it all under control.
JACKSON (MUMBLES)
Sure, right?
Chase and Jackson chuckle. Jackson opens the fridge, grabs the orange juice bottle, and chugs the carton. He slams the carton on the granite countertop, taking a sigh of relief.
JACKSON
Chase has this superpower thing down. Give it a few weeks, and he'll be a natural.
CHASE
Yeah. At least nobody got hurt by
the theft.
Gal shrugs.
GAL
But you can still use these abilities whenever you want or tell anyone about them. Not even your mom, dad, or sister can know.
CHASE
It's not like I was planning on
telling them.
Chase shrugs, looking at Jackson. Jackson shrugs back.
JACKSON (SCOLDING)
Chase!
CHASE
Alright! I promise my secrets are safe with the three of us. Can I eat my sloppy Joe in peace now?
GAL
Bon appetite, my friend. I have more
meat if you want another one. I'll make tacos tomorrow instead.
Chase grins.
CHASE
Sure. Can I come over again for
tacos?
Galileo sighs. Long beat.
JACKSON
I don't see why you can't come
over.
Jackson glances at his dad.
GAL (TO CHASE)
ALRIGHT! Alright. Geez. Don't twist my arm. You're welcome to come over. I have to run some tests on you tomorrow, anyway.
CHASE
Yes!
He pumps his fist and rises in the air a few feet.
GAL
But try not to do that.
Chase swims in the air and levels with the floor.
CHASE
Agreed.
Chase scoots his chair in and Jackson returns to the table. They continue eating.
INT. BEDROOM - DAY
Chase sleeps in bed, cuddled up in his sheets. The light in the corner flickers on, and we pan over to see ANDREW CLEMENTS, 38, Chase's father, with bright blue eyes, tall, athletic build, standing in the doorway of the room.
ANDREW
Get up, bud.
Andrew walks over to Chase and sits at his bedside.
Chase's eyes snap open, and he panics, looking around, adjusting to the light in his room while rubbing his eyes. Suddenly he stares at his father, wide-eyed.
ANDREW
Get up, make your bed and get ready. I'm taking you somewhere fun.
Chase moans in annoyance and pulls the covers down.
CHASE
Your definition of fun, or mine?
Chase groans and pushes from the mattress.
ANDREW
I want you downstairs in ten
minutes. Andrew leaves the room.
EXT. OCEAN - CHASE'S YACHT - DAY
Chase stands next to his father, standing on a boating dock in front of his father's small yacht, with a sour look as a whiff of salty ocean water hits his nostrils.
ANDREW
Ta-da!
Andrew shakes jazz hands by his sides.
CHASE
(Sarcastic)
This is going to be great.
Chase pushes his lips together in dissatisfaction, staring at the rickety boat in front of him.
CHASE
It's Grandpa's old boat. Does this
thing come with a life insurance policy?
Andrew pats Chase's back and takes a deep breath.
ANDREW (HESITANTLY)
I'll say.
Andrew slaps Chase one last time on the shoulder blades and boards the boat, waving Chase on. Chase steps onto the yacht, and Andrew starts the engine.
TIME-LAPSE - ONE HOUR
Chase sits by the front of the boat, eating Fritos and a PB&J sandwich with a coke. Andrew shuts off the boat, letting the waves push the boat.
ANDREW
Are you okay, bud?
CHASE
Yeah.
Chase gets up from his spot, dumping the rest of his Fritos in his mouth, and walks to the boat's edge. His dad follows him, standing next to him as they look over at the low tide and nearby islands.
ANDREW
You see that island?
CHASE
I'm not fucking blind.
Chase huffs.
ANDREW
Does Sky let you talk like that?
CHASE
No.
Andrew sighs.
ANDREW
Remind me to talk to you about your
attitude later.
(beat)
That island over there is Catalina. I went camping there with my school when I was a kid.
Chase looks impressed, gazing at the island.
CHASE
Oh, really?
ANDREW
Really. A fox came right up to
Billie and Kirk one night... No fear whatsoever.
Chase scoffs.
CHASE (MONOTONOUS)
Cool.
ANDREW
If you think that's cool, look to
your left.
Andrew points to the left at a whale coming closer to the boat. Water lifts from its blowhole, flips in the air, slamming back into the water, and sends the boat rocking.
CHASE
Nice.
Suddenly the whale changes course and swims off.
ANDREW
We should get back to shore before
your mom panics.
CHASE
Agreed.
Andrew pats Chase's shoulder.
ANDREW
Keep watch while I start the motor.
Andrew wanders back into the cabin, where he starts the boat.
EXT. BOATING DOCK - NOON
Chase and Andrew ride into the dock on the boat. As soon as the boat docks, Chase hops off the boat. Andrew walks out and gets off too.
ANDREW
Couldn't you wait until I turned
off the engine?
CHASE
Nope.
Andrew huffs.
ANDREW
Did you at least have fun?
CHASE
Yep. Thanks, dad.
Suddenly, two men, Gabriel and Samuel, stand to the side on the dock. They spot Chase and wave him over.
GABRIEL
Hey, Andrew. Are you busy right now?
Andrew looks at Chase. Chase looks disappointed at his father.
ANDREW
I'll be right over.
Andrew quickly checks his boat, pointing out things he needs to do, and looks at Chase.
ANDREW
Stay put, Chase.
Chase groans.
CHASE
Seriously? I'm not five.
ANDREW
I said stay put.
Andrew gives Chase a bitter look and starts to wander off. Andrew silently follows. Andrew shoves Chase in the water, laughing.
ANDREW (LAUGHING)
That's what you get for not staying put.
Chase spits water out like a fountain.
CHASE
What the heck, dad?
ANDREW
Give me a moment, and I'll be back.
CHASE
Do I have a choice at this moment?
Chase rolls his eyes and spits out more water. Then, he starts swimming towards the beach on the other side and stops as his dad joins the two men on a nearby boat.
Andrew shakes two more men's hands. Both men wear FBI and bulletproof jackets with guns holstered by their waists.
CHASE
What the hell are you doing?
ANDREW
Is this about the transport of
stolen goods?
SAMUEL
Good, we're on the same page. Peter wants to talk to you regarding the mission.
Samuel pats Andrew's back and leads him into the Cabin.
CHASE
Shoot!
Samuel sweeps outside the boat as Chase ducks into the water, breathing effortlessly in the sea, closing the Cabin door. Then, Chase comes up to the surface.
CHASE
You're in big trouble, Dad. Mom is going to kill you.
(realizing)
She's going to kill me!
Suddenly, the boat rumbles to life, swiftly leaving the dock as Chase swims out of the way, and he watches the FBI agents go with his father.
Chase checks his surroundings until the coast is clear, lifts from the ocean a few feet into the sky, and silently follows the boat.
Chase lands safely on the back of the boat. Peter, the lead FBI agent, leads the meeting.
PETER
Gerard's at large again.
Garrett, another F.B.I. Agent in the meeting clears his throat.
GARRETT
And what about that super. Do you think Chase finally gained powers like yours?
Samuel scoffs.
SAMUEL
The kid has no idea how much danger he's in. We're talking about the mafia--
Chase moves closer to hear better when he knocks over a barrel.
CHASE (WHISPERED VOICE)
My dad is Ultra man?!
Chase easily picks up the barrel, and heavy machinery and sand pours out.
CHASE
Shoot!
Samuel walks to the doorway and peers out.
SAMUEL
F.B.I. Who's there?!
Chase hides behind another barrel, breathing heavily but silently. Samuel scans the boat, and his eyes land on the barrel Chase hides behind.
