Chapter 10 - If It Wasn't For Erza
"Here's two more." The guard said as he tossed two small children into a cell. One of the two, a little girl, cried. She was scared, terrified even. The other one, a little boy, watched the girl cry. He wrapped his arms around her in a hug. He knew why she was scared. Their parents had been killed and they had been captured. "It's gonna be ok, sis." He told her, trying to comfort her. Deep down, he knew it wasn't going to be ok. He didn't even know if they would make it out alive. But for now they had each other.
"You guys new here?" The boy whipped his head around and saw a group of kids and an old man in the far back of the cell. The boy nodded shyly. "What is this place?" He asked. "The Tower of Heaven." Another boy answered, walking over to them. "My name's Jellal. Jellal Fernandes." Jellal stuck out his hand in greeting. "What's your name?" The little boy looked at Jellal for a moment before reaching out his hand in return, shaking hands with Jellal. "Rick." He answered.
If only he remembered me, Rick thought as he sipped some tea. He remembered Jellal, but Jellal didn't remember him. It hurt. Jellal helped him and his little sister adjust to the Tower of Heaven. Jellal was his first friend. They took care of each other and stood up for each other.
"You runts really did it this time!" A guard sneered. "Which one of you threw this at my head?" He asked, holding a bowl in his hand. The soup that was once in the bowl, was now in his hair. What little hair he had left. "It was me." Jellal said. Truth is, it wasn't Jellal. It was Rick. And Rick couldn't let Jellal take the fall for him. He had to be a man and accept his punishment. "No, it was me!" He shouted. "What are you doing?" Jellal whispered. "I can't let you take blame for something you didn't do." Rick whispered back. The guard looked between the two boys, coming to a decision. "How about this: I'll take you both." He said, grabbing the two boys and carrying them away.
That was a good memory even though it ended in pain. How could you forget a memory like that? Who forgets a memory like that? Jerks. That's who. Jellal stood up for everyone. Him, his sister, Simon, Sho, Wally, Millianna, and Erza. Erza. It was Erza. It was all Erza's fault.
"Hahaha! Did you really think you could escape from us?" The guard let out an obnoxious laugh. "So whose plan was it?" He asked. Everyone sat in silence, afraid because they knew the punishment. "Mine." Jellal said, standing up. "Hahaha, I knew it. You've always been a troublemaker." The guard said, taking Jellal away. He didn't deserve it. It wasn't his plan. It was Erza's.
Why does he go so far to protect others? He could've gotten himself killed. Doesn't his life mean anything to him? He was too kind, but he had changed after that.
"We've got to fight back! Fight for our freedom like Jellal said!" Erza preached, trying to convince everyone to take a stand. They were all unsure. Rick, however, was completely against it. "No." He said. "But-" Erza started but she was cut off. "No, Erza!" Rick shouted, "The last time you made an escape plan, Jellal stood up for you and look where it got him. It's been three days and he's still in there!"
Despite what he had said, Erza still managed to convince everyone to fight back. Rick and his sister refused. However, while the guards were busy with the rebellion, Rick and his sister went to go get Jellal. "Jellal!" He called out to his friend. The small blue haired boy was still chained up with his head hung low. "Jellal, can you hear me?" Rick asked, poking Jellal's face.
Jellal grunted in response. "I can hear you." He said without lifting his head. His voice was different. This was not the same Jellal from three days ago. His voice was monotone, emotionless. "W-We're getting you out of here." Rick said, becoming scared. "No." Jellal said, "Go away now." Rick couldn't believe his ears. "Jellal!" Erza's voice shouted from outside the room. She was coming to save him. "C'mon, Jellal. Let's-" Rick started in a last attempt, but Jellal cut him off. "I said go away, Rick. Can you not hear? Go away and never come back." Rick grabbed his sister by the hand and ran away just before Erza bursted through the doors.
It should've been Erza instead. She came up with the plan. She should've took responsibility. Jellal never would've changed if it hadn't been for Erza. Sure, he was a good guy now, but he never would've went evil if it wasn't for Erza; never would've rebuilt the R-System, never would've tried to revive Zeref, never would've tricked the Magic Council, never would've been imprisoned in a lacrima, and never would've went to jail.
They could've still been friends. If it wasn't for Erza.
