Chapter 6
I woke up with a strange feeling and remembered that I had spent the night away from home, I rubbed my eyes with my hands and sat up in bed. Through the blinds, some light was coming into the room and like a little flashback I remembered everything that happened the day before, a dry chuckle escaped me.
"What madness have you gotten yourself into, Bethany?"
I said out loud to myself, another chuckle escaped me, I was definitely not dreaming, and this was all so crazy, who knew that I would find myself involved in a big lie with the heir of Sweden, this was a top story that could well be in the New York Times, anyone who knew about this, would die to get a front-page story.
I got out of bed, a shiver ran through my body when I felt the contact of the floor with the sole of my foot, I went to the window and opened the blinds in search of natural light, it was not a perfect or much less great view of the city or the beach, but it was a sweet view of the garden and the houses next door. Although Frederick had given me a brief explanation of why he lived here, I needed to know more, to tell the truth, I wanted to know a little more about him and not in the sense that you want to know about a person because you are attracted to him, but because the prince gave the impression of being an interesting person full of mysteries, yesterday I had discovered that. It was more than clear that he was much more than a guy with a pompous title.
I let out a yawn as I moved away from the window and walked towards the door to open it, I stood still in front of the door frame looking for the prince, there was no trace of him and the door to his room was closed, in my heart, I prayed that he was in his room and not in the bathroom, as if I was an intruder ─which I practically was─ I walked towards the bathroom, the right thing to do was to knock before opening the door but I still had the hope that the boy was sleeping, so I saved myself from knocking and turned the lock to check that I didn't have a key, I felt more confident when I verified that it was available. After relieving myself I checked my reflection in the mirror as I washed my hands.
How awful!
My hair was tangled and disheveled, I immediately tried to fix it with my hands, I carefully untangled it and then put some water on it to remove the exaggerated volume I had woken up with, after making sure I left it decently, I washed my face and looked for toothpaste which, luckily was in plain sight, I put some on my index finger and brushed, rinsed and checked my reflection once more before leaving the bathroom.
There was still no sign of Frederick around the place and as I am extremely curious I felt like knocking on his door and checking that he was sleeping, in the end, I ended up going towards the kitchen, even though everything had been strange and weird, I was grateful for the fact that he bothered to give me asylum in his house so I decide to prepare breakfast as a way of thanks.
To my bad luck, the prince had nothing in the fridge besides juice, ham, mayonnaise and cheese to make sandwiches. I bit my lower lip debating whether it was the right thing to do to make sandwiches for both of us, just like he had done the day before.
"Good morning."
Frederick's hoarse and contented voice made me startle immediately and I let go of the refrigerator door right away, I put my hand to my heart, I didn't expect him to come out ─much less without a shirt and sport shorts─, I immediately averted my gaze from his naked torso and let out a nervous giggle.
"Jesus Christ, I thought you were still asleep!"
Another nervous giggle escaped me, and he joined in with a hoarse chuckle, I looked back up at him and he rolled his eyes in amusement.
"I was awake for a while now, I heard when you opened the door to your room."
"Oh."
I swore he was asleep.
There was a little silence between the two of us, again, I dedicated myself to see him, his body was well defined and gave the impression that he worked out often even though he didn't have a very marked abs, having a view like that in the morning was impressive, any girl would die to wake up one morning and meet an attractive guy like him, just thinking about it for a few seconds, I blushed so I turned my eyes to his face, where he had this funny look that I have no doubt is usual.
"Uhm... I was thinking about preparing breakfast for both of us" I said after a few seconds, I bit my lower lip, his eyebrows raised in amazement. "The bad thing is that you have an almost empty refrigerator."
I concluded, Frederick removed the smile on his mouth and replaced it with a grimace, he ran a hand through his hair at the same time.
"Yeah, about that... I usually eat breakfast after I work out. If there's not a lot of time, I buy breakfast."
That made sense, it explained why he was wearing shorts and walking around shirtless, he had just come from working out even though he didn't look agitated, I was curious to know how early he was awake. I nodded not knowing what to say.
"Luckily for both of us, Freya made pancakes for both of us."
He said with a smile.
"Freya?"
I asked curiously, Frederick didn't answer back, he decided to walk to his room, I encouraged myself to follow him, the door to his room was open as well as the door to his closet, where he was standing taking out a white t-shirt to put it on. It was a pity not to have that spectacular view of him with his shirt off.
"A friend and neighbor," he replied, closing the closet doors and then turning his full attention to me," I found her when I went for a run this morning and she said there were enough pancakes for both of us."
I raised an eyebrow.
"I didn't think anyone would know you'd have company?"
He reached under the bed to pull out his sneakers.
"I wish that had been the case, but old Blomberg saw you get out of the car last night," he buckled his shoelaces. "I wouldn't be surprised if the whole dorm got wind of it, Blomberg always has the news firsthand."
I laughed. For my part, I pressed a grimace, I didn't know what to think about it, it certainly wasn't good for anyone to find out that I was around with the prince, it would hurt us both, for some reason, he didn't look so worried about it.
"Come on, let's go get that delicious breakfast I'm starving."
He said walking beside me to leave the room, I went after him, he opened the front door and waited for me to leave the house first.
He didn't even give me time to think about my outfit until we both found ourselves at the door of an older lady who was looking at both of us with a charming smile.
"Freddy!" exclaimed the brunette woman in front of us excitedly, "I thought you weren't coming back!"
"And miss a good breakfast?" she asked in a happy tone. "I'd have to be out of my mind to do that."
The lady's smile widened, then seconds later she settled on me and her face filled with astonishment, she looked me up and down, raised an amused eyebrow as she turned to look at Frederick.
"Will you introduce me to your friend my boy?"
"Freya, this is Bethany," he said pointing at me. "Bethany this is Mrs. Freya."
I offered a shy smile.
"Good morning."
I mentioned, Freya's smile widened, I paid attention to her for a moment, she was a somewhat chubby person, short in stature, dark skin, dark hair and brown eyes, besides looking like an extremely nice person, as a greeting, she pounced on me and wrapped me in a tender embrace.
"Hi Bethany, it's nice to meet you," he said as he turned away, he gave me a look up and down again, which made me pay attention for the first time to my outfit, I should have changed.
"I must have changed." I said as enthusiastically as she did, trying to avoid the fact that it made me uncomfortable to be in my pajamas. "You can call me Beth."
I offered and she nodded.
"She's cute," she said to Frederick with a smile. "I like her. Come, Mikael came a few minutes ago for his slice of pancakes, if you had arrived earlier, you probably would have caught him for breakfast."
"It's a pity," added Frederick.
We entered the house and Freya closed the door behind us, we followed her into the kitchen, where a delicious smell of brewed coffee, hot cakes and honey wafted out, my stomach growled, and I wished neither of us could notice it. Again, I thought about my outfit and felt ridiculous for going out dressed like that, how come I didn't consider it? I was comfortable among the clothes I didn't remember to wear, fortunately, Freya didn't comment on it and neither did Frederick.
Both of them got into a small conversation about that Mikael guy and something about gardening that I didn't understand very well, Freya approached her coffee pot and filled two cups with coffee, she immediately extended me one that I took without hesitation, then she passed another one to Frederick and took a plate where she placed exactly eight pancakes.
"Do you have honey at home?" he asked Frederick who nodded.
"There is still some left."
"Perfect, I've buttered them enough and made sure they're still warm for both of us, I hope you enjoy them."
He handed them to Frederick who held them in one free hand and in the other the coffee cup. He walked over to Freya and gave her a kiss on the cheek.
"Thank you very much for breakfast, I promise to come early tomorrow morning to put up the new mailbox."
"Thank you," she said pulling away from Frederick to look at me. "And it was nice to meet you, Beth."
I gave her my best smile.
"Likewise," I lifted the coffee cup. "Thanks for the coffee, it's delicious."
Back at Frederick's house, he immediately set the table, brought out two plates, forks, knives and a jar of maple syrup.
Since I was hungry, I didn't hesitate to take two hot cakes and place them on my plate after he helped himself, for the first five minutes, neither of us spoke and we just ate breakfast in silence until I decided to break the ice between the two of us.
"You seem to be very popular here."
Frederick looked up at me, finished chewing and spoke.
"I have a good relationship with my neighbors. They are nice."
He said, pouring more honey on his breakfast.
"It's interesting," I confessed. "I'm surprised."
And I was.
"You shouldn't be," he said, playing it down. He finished putting a piece in his mouth and chewed it, then spoke, "Later, we can go to your apartment, I have the day off so I could take you back and come back early."
"That's fine with me," I said, there was nothing like being in my own house.
"I don't think it's that necessary, but you could bring with you only the essentials, you know, clothes, accessories and something useful, later I'll send Mark to do the shopping and─"
"Sorry, what did you say?"
I asked uneasily, was I hearing right? Because I thought I heard to bring my belongings.
"I said you should only bring things that are necessary for you, is there a problem with that?"
I looked at him incredulously.
"Why would I have to do that?"
I asked defensively, Frederick's face became serious.
"I thought we were clear that we would be together, weren't we?"
I denied.
"You never mentioned anything about living together," I denied again. "I don't think I could accept that, it would be too much."
He snorted.
"It's no big deal. We can't let you live alone in Stockholm either, they might get suspicious, plus my brother would try to look for you."
"But I can't live with you."
"Why not? I have a nice apartment."
Again, I said no.
"I don't agree."
"But I do," he said, forcing a smile. "Again, one on one, it's a close contest."
I rolled my eyes.
"You're crazy," I laughed nervously and held his gaze. "I'm not living with you, I have my own apartment and I can─"
"Don't say you're keeping it on your own because we both know that's not true," he interrupted, pushed his plate aside and folded his arms on the table. "If you agree to go out with me, you're staying with me."
I snorted.
"It's ridiculous."
"I'd say no," he insisted. "Besides, it will be convenient for both of us. If we don't want to get caught, we have to do it my way."
I did as he did, removed my plate and folded my arms on the table.
"And why not my way?"
I challenged him.
At what point had it occurred to him to live together?
"Because I get the impression that it could end up being a disaster if we do it your way."
I laughed. He was right, but I wasn't going to admit it. I decided to continue challenging him.
"And doing it your way wouldn't end in disaster?"
He grimaced. I felt triumphant, I had hit the nail on the head.
"I'll tell you what," he said evading my question, jumped up from his seat and ran off to his room, he came in seconds later with a coin in his hand, "See you stay with me, face it we'll do things your way."
I smiled. It was a fair deal, I liked games of chance, and I can say I've been lucky at them, I often used to win at them, so I was confident.
"Okay. And if you do things my way, I'll stay home, and we'll probably drop this thing you've made up on your own right now."
I could already smell triumph on my side so I smiled so that I could see all my teeth. We would put a stop to all this once and for all.
Frederick offered me the same smile.
"Okay, we have a deal."
He tossed the coin in the air and caught it in seconds, covering it with the palm of his hand. I prayed for luck not to fail me; it never did.
Frederick took his hand off the coin slowly without taking his eyes off mine, then he turned to look at the coin, I did the same, his smile grew, and he looked me in the eyes.
"You're staying with me, gorgeous."
