7. Jeopardize
As soon as we entered the pub I got a bad taste of deja vu. It was a bikers circus. The pub was filled with the same kind of people Fran had invited to the party at the apartment. "You guys made it, where have you been?" A rush of wind moves towards us and suddenly I get a face full of Francesca.
"What do you mean?" I frown, but looking at the clock it said eight thirty. We must have lost track of time with the kiss.
"I'm sorry. We were having dinner with my parents."
"Quindi?" Francesca gasped in a delighted surprise.
Her brother Francesco stirs beside me, he hadn't said a word since we entered the pub.
"But why did you bring my brother, you barely know him?"
"Well, if you hadn't left him all alone at the apartment...." I said angrily. "You could have introduced us days ago if it hadn't been for the party you threw....."
"Okay, okay, enough of that." She sighs. Grabbing one hand that is Francesco's and one hand that is mine, Fran stands in between and forces us to shake. "Pecco meet Maya and Maya meet Pecco. I'm sure you too must be very familiar with each other by now."
"What makes you say that?" I said, thinking that she could see right through my flustered cheeks.
"Didn't you say that you guys had dinner with your parents?"
"Right, dinner." I laugh nervously.
"I want to hear all about it, but first I've got to get ready for our set. I'll see you guys later. Ciao!"
"Ciao." I wave. Francesca turns heads with the skimpy dress she's wearing. She sure looked good. Behind me Francecso's silence is smothering, he didn't even seem excited to see his sister. "I have to use the bathroom." I lied. I needed to get away, just for a minute in order to collect my thoughts.
"I'll order us some drinks."
"Right." I paused. " I don't drink alcohol, so anything other than that. I turned away before I could see him raise his eyebrows in surprise, they always do when I tell people that I don't drink. Worst is when they ask me if it's for religious purposes, which it isn't. My parents drink and I choose not to, there is nothing more to the story.
When I get back from the bathroom it takes me a minute to locate Francesco at the bar. The pub has gotten more crowded within the hour, with Francesca's band about to do their set.
"Hey." I said. I took my time applying some light makeup to my face. Along with the outfit I bought I should be looking alright.
Francesco quietly slides me my drink, ginger beer, but before I take a sip I have to ask him: "Is everything alright? You seem awfully quiet since we arrived at the pub." I stare at Francesco with angst.
"I shouldn't have kissed you." He said, slightly leaning towards me in order for me to hear him over the crowd.
"You didn't." I said. "I kissed you too."
"Yeah, but I initiated it."
"Do you regret it?" I said, feeling the angst and insecurity bubble up inside of me.
"Do you?"
"No."
His answer is silence, luckily for him Fran's set was about to start. I get up from my stool and move with the crowd towards the centered stage. I don't care If Francesco follows me or not, I've only known the guy for a day.
"Good evening everybody." Francesco speaks into the microphone and the crowd cheers.
"We're Stick Rich and we'll be your entertainment for tonight."
The crowd cheers and the music starts to play, raising the roof of the building.
I yelp as someone grabs me from behind. I relax with his touch. His soft lips roamed the back of my neck and I moaned his name, "Francesco."
As the people go crazy around us we get swallowed by the crowd. Turning around to face him, Francesco leans in to kiss me remorsfully, as if he'd lose me if I'd let him go. It was drunk kisses, sloppy kisses all the way through the first couple of songs. Once a slow song started playing, Francesco turned me back around and wrapped his arms around me, making our bodies sway with the music. No words were said, because no words were needed.
Somewhere around midnight we left Fran at the pub with Seamus and the band. By the way he was pulling me towards the apartment I could tell that Francesco was eager to take me home. My jacket was off before we had gotten over the threshold, our lips inseparable. He guides me towards the living room whilst I push for my room. Somewhere in the middle we end up on the living room floor, the fury mat dampening our fall.
"I don't want to lead you on." I gasp, feeling him tugging at my skirt. He groans into my neck where his lips are attached like two blood sucking leashes. There is a missing feeling when his soft lips leave my neck. "Are you a virgin?" His curls tickle my face as he is positioned over me.
"No." I chuckle, tucking one lock behind his ear. "I just think that it would be weird if I slept with my roommate's brother."
His face is enlightened by the street lights outside, the rest of the apartment is dark. I get up to rest on my elbows, Francesco puts his back against the sofa. There is distance between us now.
"I didn't think it would be anything I needed to tell you considering I just met you today."
"It's been a long day huh?" He said. His hand intertwines with mine. I sit up.
"Maybe we could watch a movie or something?"
"A movie?" He said, his eyebrows crooked. "Can I still kiss you during the movie?"
I take in his jaw with my hand, bringing it forth towards my lips. I feel his lips shape into a smile. His green eyes meet mine when he leans away. "So what movie are we watching?" he grins.
******
There is no funny business during the movie. Once we hit the sofa I feel the long day wash over me. My eyes become heavy and I slowly fall into a slumber. My eyes flung open to the soft touch of Francesco who stirs my body.
"You should get to bed." He whispers. Behind him the movie is showing its ending credits.
I stretch my body before I get up from the sofa. The clock on the wall tells me that Francesca has decided to stay with Seamus and wouldn't return until morning.
"Fran's room is all yours if you want to stay, she won't be back until morning." I said.
"Do you want me to stay?"
I shrug. "You're free to do as you please but I wouldn't dare to ride that death machine at this hour." Seaums motorbike still stood parked outside of the building.
"Then you must not know me very well." Francesco smirked.
I really didn't want him to leave, but what would Francesca say if she knew that we spent both day and night together? It was all moving a little too fast.
"Francesco I...."
"Don't worry." He hurries to say. " I understand that you want me to stay in my sister's room instead of yours."
I bite my lip. "I just feel strange." I mumble. "I really don't want to do something that would jeopardize my friendship with your sister, especially not..."
"Sleep with her little brother." He smirks.
"Exactly." I sigh.
