The voice stops as a tall boy rounds a corner from beside the counter. He stares at me. I stare back uncomfortably, not knowing what to do.

"Uh, hey."

I wave and look at Peridot, she chuckles and runs over to this boy. She puts her arms out beside her to point him out. She smiles evilly.

"This is Lars! He smells and yells at Steven all the time! Despite the stench, he can be cool."

Peridot then runs and jumps onto the counter, struggling to pull herself up.

"This is Sadie," she says as she moves her arms toward the shorter girl. Peridot lies on the counter, putting an arm on her hip, the other supporting her head.

"They make donuts and Sadie tells Lars to leave Steven alone."

I prepare to introduce myself before Steven shouts.

"AND THEY'RE IN LOVE!"

Lars glares, a pink hue catching his nose and cheeks. Sadie turns away, putting a hand up to her face. She seemed to be covering her eyes, blocking out any way someone could see her eyes.

"We aren't im love! Are you gonna buy something or not?"

I walk over to the counter, lifting Peridot up and holding her as I saw an adult woman do to a smaller human. She was resting against my right hip, my arm around her back. I had to shift my weight to my left leg to support her.

"What do you have?"

Lars looked confused before that pink tint came back. He stared at me as he explained donuts and what kinds they sold. In the end, I asked for an apple fritter.

"Thank you. How much is it?"

Steven explained to me that I woukd need to purchase it. Lars held his hands awkwardly.

"Um... just take it. Free."

Sadie looked confused as I laughed. Steven looked smug and pointed at Lars. Perry just sat there, uncomfortably.

"Okay, guess I'll go then."

I left the shop and as I closed the door, I heard Lars shouting something. I looked through the window to see him with his elbows up in the air, hands on his eyes. He was clearly embarrassed. He looked at me and I pretended that I didn't see anything so as to not make him more flustered.

"Let's go to the beach!"

"Steven, the gems-"
