Daughter of The Moon Goddess
"Hello Everyone.....I got a Review of that's not my Daily or try to be Daily Pretty Cure of Hirogaru Sky if you watch those, but as you may know from my other reviews, I'm an avid reader in Manga and Books just books in general, like a quote I like to say."
"Imagination and Inspiration makes a Story come to life".
And this can I guess bring in some way of to how the author of this story I'm reviewing creates the world from Mythology (one of my favorite themes) and puts it with Fantasy, and yes this another Fantasy Book but with the Beautiful Culture of Asia, specifically Chinese; The Mythology and Culture.
This Story is Daughter of The Moon Goddess by Sue Lynn Tan, she's a Malaysian author, and this book is her Debut novel, so let me get into talking about the Book because I was blown off the Moon reading it, (Yes that was a joke although people who have read the book would know why i said that).
(What is the Daughter of The Moon Goddess?)
"Ok for those who don't watch my Reviews maybe in books I review, and I do this way in a lot of other videos basically my history card videos but off topic, here I'll explain in simple details about the Book, but I need to not spoil it, as I have a habit of doing that but since this book was very good and surprisingly being the Author's Debut novel I must do my best to keep the spoilish mouth shut!"
"So the Daughter of the Moon Goddess, is the First Story in a duology called the Celestial Kingdom by Sue Lynn Tan, it has 40 Chapters and 514 Pages (in my book).
The Story focuses on a 1st person perspective of The main character; Xingyin, who is the Daughter of Chang'e and Houyi, Famous characters from Chinese mythology.
Chang'e as you may know is the Moon Goddess of Chinese mythology, different stories depicting how she became the Moon Goddess was by drinking an elixir of immortality given to her lover and husband; Houyi for slaying the Sunbirds who's little joyride on a chariot was causing trouble for the mortal people below in the Mortal realm by causing a drought and etc.
The Celestial Emperor who is mostly the main antagonist of this book gives Houyi the Immortality Elixir, but he does not drink it right away staying as an mortal with his "Mortal" wife Chang'e different stories claim that Chang'e drinks the Elixir of Immortality because of a sketchy apprentice to Houyi tried to steal it and she drank so he could not have it and that whisked her up to Moon and she became trapped their and was now Immortal, breaking Houyi's heart and he killed himself, which devastates Chang'e.
(And it's honestly my most favorite origin story for her character mostly because you got the sketchy apprentice and there is more story and explanation that is what I was able to find and it makes it more likable for me).
Or how this other version of the Story goes, Chang'e steals the Elixir for an unknown reason; whatever it being jealousy or something we don't know, but Sue Lynn Tan elaborates on this version of the origin more in Daughter of the Moon Goddess that she takes it because of Xingyin.
However in doing so, she angers the Celestial Emperor who sentences her to eternal imprisonment on the Moon, but Chang'e has Xingyin and she has to hide her daughter in isolation.
And so that's a little bit of backstory on Chang'e, now speaking of her daughter, The Main Character; Xingyin, who's name means "Silver Star '' in Chinese.....or for some reason Google says......uh something inappropriate, I don't know why?! But it does for some reason! And it popped up when I just looked up what the name means but at least there were other sources that correctly had the real meaning which is the same meaning her name means in the book, so thank goodness in some way, because boy that would be embarrassing.....in my opinion!
But anyhow off topic again!, Xingyin is discovered after her Magic starts to flare, so she had to flee from the Moon and leave her mother and she finds out her mother is a prisoner, but when she is hiding, she hides in the Celestial Kingdom, Ruled by the Emperor who Imprisoned her mother and so her main goal is to free her mother, however she has to do that while not Revealing who she really is.
Along the way, she meets friends, some are loyal to her and one who betrays her, she also has a strong friendship with the Celestial Emperor's Son; Liwei.
(My Thoughts)
So I Started reading it because I was interested in the story, and I found it was the Author's Debut novel so I thought why not read it as I also have dreams of becoming a writer myself....I don't know when but it takes time you know.
One Question, that circles around Daughter of The Moon Goddess is the romantic part, is it like those intense romances with sex and all that in it like any fantasy novel?.
Well no like you may know when looking up at topic about the book, there is none of that, there is romance but it only goes up to just the kissing and that's it, so it is good for you if you are not into those fantasy stories with sex and etc, but it has a lot of blood and battles if you can imagine it.
But I really like the Cover, it was beautiful and the illustrations and how it alludes to the title is beautiful, and the expression to Chinese mythology which it's based on.
I loved Xingyin, she was a good main character and reminded me of Jude from The Folk of Air by Holly Black, the reason being how the two are tough as stone on the outside hiding their emotions through a brave and strong attitude, and not giving up without a fight, and that they are both Female characters makes that powering in a way.
Her Relationship with Prince Liwei is also one of the biggest highlights of the book, they have a very strong friendship, and all the same the two actually love each other.
Not much I can say about what I don't like because I have the problem of actually saying anything bad, the Book was just too interesting for me to even focus on any bad that I didn't like about the book.
Although I have troubles of Pronouncing names wrong, mostly Chinese Names so that was a hurdle for me to get around this book.
And with Characters I hate I like to do this; They do not get the correct pronunciation of her name from my mouth!, SO REVENGE!
But I think the strongest heights of the Book would be the Friendships the main character makes. They are very strong which helps her out in the ending of the Book.
And that's all I have to say are my thoughts of the Daughter of the Moon Goddess.
(Do I Recommend it?)
So if you're are someone who likes Chinese Mythology and Culture and just the Fantasy Aspect of it with the World of The Immortal Realm, familiar mythology like the Four dragons of the four rivers who appear in the story too, then I would recommend this book, especially for the story it contains about Xingyin and the Goal of Freeing Chang'e from Enteral Imprisonment.
I've been Recommending this story to a lot of my friends and family and even my teachers at school and they are interested in the story, especially the cover that catches their eye.
As my Art Teacher; Mis. Nemes says it's lovely, I've also been trying to get a good picture of me holding it in the School Year book, Because I am a Senior in High School and if I actually get it in the Yearbook I'll say to my kids if I have some.
"Kids, This was My favorite book during my senior year of high school."
It's a fantastic debut novel in my opinion and I recommend you give it a try and read it.
And Sue Lynn Tan is gonna be another author I can look up too whenever I want to become a full fledged writer myself.
(Ending)
Ok I'll say that is my Review for The Daughter of the Moon Goddess, I do plan on Reading it's sequel which is already out; It's called "Heart of The Sun Warrior".
So See you next time when I get there.
