Never Enough

Don sat in his dressing room, wearing an expensive gold and white suit, then began vocal exercises before the show started. He picked up his phone to call Mallory. Oddly, Mallory was not answering the call. He kept calling five times, but his efforts were in vain.

"He must be mad about what Rita said," Don thought to himself. "But I know he understands."

Don became bothered by the thought and drunk a bit of vodka on his water bottle. He glanced at his wristwatch and nodded to himself, "I hope he's watching the concert."

He walked near the picture of his mother on his mirror. He kissed his fingers and touched the old photograph, "This is for you, mama."

He smiled as he recalled the fading memories of his childhood, "You always told me you wanted me to see me sing on a grand stage... Can you see me now?" He asked, almost choking on his emotions.

He shook his head to himself and left the room. He rushed to the concert, greeting the concert producer and entering the curtain separating the stage and backstage. The spotlights blinded him for a moment as he stepped into the attention of the crowd. He waved, then sat down in front of the elegant white piano.

"Good evening, everyone," he spoke into the microphone with a pleasant tone. The crowd clapped and whistled as a response.

"I dedicate this to my mother, watching from the heavens above. She always wanted me to be good and be a well-respected musician like my grandfather."

"At Least I became the other one she wanted," He bitterly thought and smiled to himself.

He paused and smirked, "I also dedicate this to my muse watching this on television."

The crowd murmured, thinking he was talking about Rose.

He pressed the first piano keys, erupting a cheer from most people. He gave a captivating smile to his admirers and focused on his instrument.

"I'm trying to hold my breath," Don tenderly sang. He gazed at the distance, remembering the time he was much younger as he closed his eyes.

"Let it stay this way, Can't let this moment end."

He slowly opened up his eyes, "You set off a dream in me."

"Getting louder now
Can you hear it echoing?
Take my hand
Will you share this with me?
'Cause darling without you..."

An image of Mallory flashed in his head. He mildly shook his head and focused.

"All the shine of a thousand spotlights
All the stars we steal from the nightsky
Will never be enough
Never be enough..."

"Towers of gold are still too little

These hands could hold the world but it'll never be enough
Never be enough

For me!"

"Never, never
Never, never

Never, for me
For me
Never enough
Never enough
Never enough
For me
For me
For me"

Don imagined himself from many years ago when he was a teenager, singing at the top of the building with his feathery wings.

"All the shine of a thousand spotlights
All the stars we steal from the nightsky
Will never be enough
Never be enough!"

"Towers of gold are still too little
These hands could hold the world
but it'll
Never be enough
Never be enough
For me!"

"Never, never
Never, never
Never, for me
For me
Never enough
Never, never
Never enough
Never, never
Never enough
For me
For me
For me"

The spotlight fades away as Don longingly stares into the air, raising his head.

"...For me."
