95 Reasons Harry Potter Sucks

OOhkay boys and girls strap in for a looong reaction. Someone linked this little gem to a comment on this book a couple chapters back and on a whim I clicked. And I read, and I read, and my blood pressure rose and I scoffed and stared and blinked because...
Now...SOME of these points are valid. MOST are nonsensical. SOME are downright toxic. I'll be replying to them all.

To kick us off, we'll address the strange and somewhat alarming hatred this person (people?? later they say many people have worked on this list??) appears to have for Ginny.

The numbers are the serial position of their points in their original post, here I've cherry picked the ones targeting our Weasley girl.

1.Ginny is a perfect character ("Mary Sue"), which Rowling hides by calling her temperamental.
2. Being temperamental is not a flaw if everyone thinks it's cute and adorable and it gets you a boyfriend.

First off, being temperamental IS a flaw. And I don't see Ginny as just 'temperamental' for the sake of character flaws. She has a lot of ambition and spirit and growing up in a household chock full of her older brothers fostered her 'take no sh*t' attitude. She's known for hexing jerks and known for being really really good at it. If you take a moment to consider her character, you realize how growing up in a huge family of little means, being the youngest, and being the only daughter might affect your personality and the way you see the world. But sure, Ginny in the films is a little flat. Perhaps you've only watched the movies? In my eyes, Ginny is in no way a perfect character, nor the strongest written in the story, but she's a far cry from the most egregious Mary Sue.

4. Ginny runs after a train like an idiot even though this isn't her first time watching the train leave with her brothers. Obviously she's watch the train leave EVERY SINGLE YEAR OF HER LIFE

This is childishly nit-picky. She's ten, and excited.

17. Ginny is a useless, whining, doll that suddenly has become the idol for girls everywhere.

Useless? Order of the Phoenix would like to speak with you. As would the students of Hogwarts during Snape's reign. And Fred and George. Ginny is incredibly skilled and strong, being noted multiple times for her scathing wit, humor rivaling the twins, and skill with hexes and other spells. She's not afraid to get in people's faces, not of anyone, and is fully able to stand her ground. She ends both her relationships on her own terms (I'm thinking of Michael Corner and Dean Thomas) because the boys weren't treating her well. She doesn't let anyone treat her like a doll by a long shot. Not to mention the trauma she went through at eleven and emerged on the other side still a kind and strong and confident woman. It affected her, to be sure, and she carries those scars through the rest of the series, but she never lets it break her and she still grows into the lovable spitfire we all know. I think that's a rather admirable ideal for girls to look up to, don't you?

46. Ginny is all the guy's beards.

I...don't even know what this is trying to say

The only reason Ginny becomes "important"t to us is because she dates Harry.
55. They fall in love way too quickly and it seems fake because no one falls in love instantly, especially teenagers.

I hate to break it to you, but Harry is the freaking main character. And Ginny?? Is not?? I -- I really don't understand this hyperfixation on Ginny. Is this common in the fandom? Ik she's not some people's favorite and the movies did her dirty, but is she really the focus of so much rage for people?

Ok ok, I digress. So taking these values as true (which maybe I shouldn't but I don't much feel like fact checking rn) i just have to reiterate, Harry is the main character. The book is third person limited, focusing singularly on harry. Yes his name is used more often? Every narration, every single scene has him in it and is about him. Like the entire story is about him because he is the main character. The only reason any of these other people are important to us is because they're important to Harry. He's the one telling the story! And I can maybe sort of marginally see your point about love. People argue all the time over who should've ended up with who. But I must say, some people do fall in love at first sight, or end up with their high school sweethearts, I know a few myself. There's an argument to be had about whether this portrayal in popular media is beneficial or not, but let's not hash that out now.

56. The only reason Harry and Ginny love each other because she good at sports good and he's famous. There's no other given reason why.

I'm now convinced you've only seen the movies. Trust me, they dilute a lot of things (it's just not going to fit in the two hours they have), Ginny's personality being one of those things.

57. It's just not healthy to teach young girls that True Love involves a guy ignoring you forever.

Not forever. Harry and Ginny were good friends for most of their school run before they started dating. Ginny also didn't pine after Harry in an unhealthy way. She had other boyfriends, she lived her life, she learned about herself. But no, young girls out there, true love is not about a guy ignoring you forever.

72. Ginny has no goals and no future, her life revolves around Harry.

Poor, poor movie viewer. You've fallen suspect to the hollywood treatment and damning label of 'love interest' our dear Ginny fell victim to. I implore you, pick up the books. But I will defend movie Ginny nonetheless; she doesn't deserve this vitriol either. Ginny is an independent young woman who has ambition and agency. She is highly skilled and unafraid of that fact, she doesn't let others push her around, she survives being possessed by the literal darkest wizard in recent memory, she lives her own life fine without Harry, pursuing her studies and dating other boys, she is instrumental in founding and running the DA, she protects other students during the year harry and co are gone and is a large part of the resistance at Hogwarts, and so much more.

80. New hot couple name for Harry and Ginny = Hinny

Er--yes? I assume you think the name is dumb or something? ... Sorry? It's the characters' names, what point do you honestly think you're making?

82. Ginny's only deep thoughts are, 'I play Quidditch! I know Harry! My brothers are virgin losers!'

POOR, POOR MOVIE VIEWER let's not beat a dead horse now, shall we?

86. "It would have been much better if Harry and Ron discovered they were gay: no dances, no whiny Ginny or Hermione. Amen to that."

Idk who you're quoting here, but this sounds like a joke. I'm going to also chock this up to Hollywood washing the life out of side characters, which is just the sad reality of how movies and books are inherently different media. But I guess you could hold the opinion that the Yule Ball subplot is overdramatized and not to your taste. Harry Potter is so much bigger than that plot thread, and to a lot of the target audience, things like that are important and relevant to their current lives.
