Chapter 5: What Do You Expect to Happen

What do you expect to happen?

I am so tired of stories where people do stupid things and they are SO shocked when it blows up in their face.

When I read stories where the villain reveals all of their evil plan after a character prompts them to then the bad guy is COMPLETELY surprised when the police show up and it turns out  the character had wire on them. Well, what would you expect to happen? You would think an evil genius that runs a multi-million company/cartel/kingdom would figure out it would be weird if a guy just randomly start asking to name all of  their assets and evil activities directly into his collar.

Then there is always the stories that include half-done plans that a 5 year-old on crack must have created. I feel like dry-heaving when I read those plans and they miraculously manage to work but it's almost as bad when the characters are TOTALLY shocked that their plan failed. If your idea is for your characters to break into a CIA facility and get to the supercomputer is "just scale the fence and avoid the guards then run to the world most valuable supercomputer," they definitely deserve to be behead by the lasers.

I want to name another type of story I see too often. Basically they go like this,

"Hello my name is Jack I'm in a war that I'm leading. When I'm on the battlefield I see an enemy soldier and I don't hesitate to slide my knife across his throat. I dash off before I can even hear his groans. Another enemy soldier rushes towards me, a scowl twisted across his face. The family resemblance between him and my last soldier is so obvious. He's on me in a flash and he raises his knife to send it into my chest. Oh my gosh! How dare he try to attack me! He's just being prissy and has no reason to kill me at all."

I groan out loud when I read stories like this. The guy is in a war and he is leading so he's the "top boss" that all the enemy soldiers will want to kill. So why in the world would he be SO shocked when the brother of the guy he just killed wants vengeance. It's a battlefield, was he expecting that no one will attack him and that his enemies won't take it personally if he kills their friend's and relatives?

One time I was reading a story on Wattpad (which i will not name) about a highschool girl who starts dating a teenage daddy. When they go out in town with baby, people "give them looks." Then this girl starts spout BS about how "people shouldn't judge" because her boyfriend "made a mistake."

Teenage parents are "not normal," people will be curious; just because people look at you doesn't they are all out to get you. Seriously, what were expecting, people to applaud you?

This is the same logic with acting and should be so for writing. For every action a character makes, there should be a decent reaction to such action. So if a character 'does the nasty' when they are too drunk to 'wrap it up.' They shouldn't be shocked to find they are knocked up/got someone pregnant.
