"Look at that white man," my 17-year-old sister said laughing and pointing to a man down the chip aisle. "He looks like he smells like spoiled milk sus. His hands dirty and shit. Eww." My sister was completely disgusted while, me on the other hand, was experiencing love at first sight, all over again.

"Yea. You like these chips with cheese?" I asked breaking eye contact with the man across the aisle.

"Ooh yesss. And these be fire with some salsa," she grinned grabbing a bunch of chips.

We headed down the aisle towards the man who looked me dead in my eyes, wishing and hoping I said something to him. Instead, I kept my eyes forward praying my sister didn't say anything disrespectful.

"No wonder daddy never liked us with white folk, they stink," Ashley stated as we passed the man up.

"Ashley that wasn't nice," I yelled as we got to the register while watching the man pull off in his 1998 Chevy pickup truck.

"You always defending these crackers. We don't owe them shit. Damn sho, not no respect," she fussed back.

"You act just like daddy. Y'all are racist and I won't be a part of this family." My ringing phone causes me to stop talking.

"Is that my brother in law? I can't wait to meet him," Ashley said grabbing the bags and following me out the store.

"Okay babe, I'll be home shortly. My sister will be coming too," I hung up the phone as Ashley began driving.

15 minutes later we pulled up to my 5 bedroom house. "Damnnn how many bedrooms and baths y'all got?"

My family wasn't invited to my wedding because my parents thought I was too young to be getting married. When was 27 too young? So they have never been to my house, never met my husband and don't even know I have a daughter.

"5 bed, 3 and a half bath," I responded nervously.

"Your husband must be rich bitchhh. Do he have a brother?" Ashley asked as we made it to the front door.

Just as I was about to answer her question, the front door swung open. "Ain't this the man from the.."

"Yes, Ashley. This is Dylan. He's my husband and the father of my 3-year-old daughter," I explained making my way through the house.

"So you married a white man Nay? Do you know what daddy gonna say when he finds out his beautiful, black daughter married a.. a.., white man? He's gonna kill you!" Ashley said getting her chips and headed for the door.

"Ashley. I don't care what daddy thinks anymore. I'm 30 years old, married to my best friend and a mother to my 3-year-old daughter. I'm happy. We're happy and that's all the hell that matters. If y'all can't be happy for me, goodbye and have a nice life. I shouldn't have to keep my life a lie to satisfy y'all!" I basically screamed as tears ran down my face. I slammed the door in my sister's face. I was only hurt because my sister was the last of my family that didn't judge me for being "different". But now she was prejudice right along with the rest of my family.

Yes! Im a black woman who is happily married to a white man. We're doing great and my family doesn't have to agree.
