Exam Tips
I'm aware that this chapter may have come a bit too late, but I think it's important anyway.
1. Bring spare pens/pencils into the exam. Don't be like me in 2nd year. That was bad.
2. When writing an essay, put your strongest argument as the first paragraph, your weaker ones in the middle and your second strongest at the end. Examiners think that the last paragraph is your weakest, and they'll give you a good mark if they think that your second strongest is your weakest.
3. Learn how to waffle.
4. If it's worth 2 marks, you need 2 things.
5. If you forget a word in a language exam, and the language is close to your native language (English for me), spell it in your native language. Chances are it's almost right. For example, (bad example but anyway) in second year, I forgot the French for 'easy' (it's facile) so I wrote 'éasy'. I got a question mark on my paper, but at least I wrote something.
6. If you have a presentation, the best time to go is first. The examiner will pay more attention and be automatically more engaged, and you'll get a better mark. You also get to set the standard for everyone else. The worst time to go is second, as you will be compared to the person who went first. The longer you wait, the less engaged your examiner will be and the worse your mark. Nothing to do with your presentation, just psychology.
7. Switch your phone off. In second year (wild year for exams) someone got a phone call in the exam, and their ringtone sounded like the birdie song. You could hear everyone trying to hold their laughter in.
8. Don't pay attention to the people around you. Your stress level will go from 110% to 92582538951063% when you hear everyone else turn the page when you're still writing.
9. Make sure you have all your exam equipment.
10. If you are running out of time, write faster and try to split your remaining time between the rest of the questions to maximise the marks. Better than answering 6 questions in part and get marks for an attempt than do 1. Prioritise the questions that you know the answer to and then the ones worth more marks.
11. If you don't know the answer, move on. Go back at the end.
12. Deep breaths. Visualise smashing that exam.
13. Write something for everything.
I think that's everything. I have plenty of wild exam stories that I'm willing to tell to anyone who asks. I really need to get on with my work now XD
