Chapter Forty-Three
Having sat Shina at the table gently, I placed a large vase full of red and white roses in the center of the table before rushing off again. Carefully picking up the next item, I slowly began walking back to the table again, a loving smile on my face.
"Happy Birthday Shina, my love!" Placing the cake before her wide eyes, I couldn't help but laugh a little at the expression on her face.
Finally, she was starting to heal again, her old smiles starting to faintly appear on her once blank face. It had taken far too long, but the wait was worth it to see hints of the old Shina I had seen in my memories finally showing through again. Sometimes I even thought I saw the smallest hints of the love she used to have for me.
"You remembered? My birthday, you remembered it?" She looked up at me with a bit of shock on her face, her eyes seeming to shine in the candlelight.
"Of course I did. How could I forget the birthday of the one I love most in the world?" Leaning forward, I brushed my lips against hers, my chest filling with warmth when she didn't pull away.
I felt my heart skip a beat when I felt her hand lightly resting on my cheek. It was the first time she had given me a touch that felt affectionate, that felt loving, in far longer than I cared to think about. Sure I had cuddled with her, held her against me as we lay in bed, even made love to her, but in all that time it had felt mostly one sided.
For her to willingly touch me in such a positive way made my heart start racing as I pulled back and stared into her eyes, my breath catching at what I saw. Feeling my eyes begin to tear up, I smiled down at her and took her hand in mine, holding it against my chest.
"Shina. My sweet, precious Shina. You're back... You're finally back." Leaning forward again, I pressed my lips against her own soft pair, feeling her fingers tighten slightly around mine. "I love you so much, Shina. So very much."
Resting my free hand against her belly, I smiled when I felt the baby kick gently.
"Don't worry, my baby. OUR baby. I love you too." Smiling up at her, I felt the first tear of joy roll down my cheek as her other hand came to rest upon my own.
Maybe if I had bothered to look closer I would have noticed the slightly broken look in her eyes, but I was far too happy just feeling some of the love she used to have for me returning.
