Chapter 4 - Periods Part 1
Periods : -
Why do we have mood swings?
The simple answer is that menstruation itself is the work of hormones that are in our body.We feel irritated for no reason, we feel overjoyed, happy, or sad. This is all due to the work of your hormones and during this time we will have cramps, stomach pain... It's because during periods our body muscles (tissues) will expand; due to this we get some cramps, mainly our bosom..
The tissues in our bosoms tend to expand, mainly mammary glands. There was a time when I thought I had breast cancer because of the changes in my body... I told my mom I'm developing stones in my breasts, I might have a disease, and even my mom was scared at that time. After that, she checked and told me that it's the sign of my period arrival and it will tend to hurt more during my period, then scolded me for saying such foul things.
Though I had white patches in my breasts, it started during my puberty and my mother immediately rushed to the doctor. She thought it was normal, but I'm very scared about it because I still have it, it still happens. Especially if the uterus contracts to expel the lining and that triggers the pain and inflammation. But that also happens due to hormone prostaglandins, our body is still in the stage of puberty. Our body will grow during our periods because that is the time when our body tends to take a large amount of food. And during that time feeling cramps usually happens due to hormonal actions on muscles. If you don't take food in time you might faint [personal experience].
Why do we get cramps?
And during this time your lower stomach will hurt because of the presence of the uterus. The uterus is located in your lower stomach. Due to the releasing of ovuls along with the uterus you will experience cramps, and food will play a huge part in the process. It happens because of hormones that trigger pain and contractions that help in breaking the layers of endometrial lining. Yes, many women do not feel cramps and pain due to the hormone level and muscles but many feel cramps because of the high level of hormone and muscle lining. After a period the linings in the uterus (known as endometrium) start forming due to the hormone called progesterone. While in the ovary, there are follicles (mass of cell forms). All this takes exactly 14 days. Then, when all the lining is formed along with the follicle or what we call egg, the ovary bursts due to high level of hormones at their peak. This is called ovulation. The egg or follicle goes into the uterus and if doesn't get fertilized within 24 hours by the sperm or male gamete it degenerates or gets destroyed. The lining of endometrium breaks and the uterus's second layer (myometrium) starts contractions and this triggers the hormones like prostaglandins. This hormone causes pain and inflammation. And the upper lining of the uterus sheds out along with the destroyed egg. This is the cause of cramps and bleeding. Now that is why cramps are different for every woman. Normal pain is primary (dysmenorrhea), but extreme pain is secondary. It is normal to have back and lower abdomen pain but to have extreme pain is not good. Back pain is due to the uterus too, because the muscles can get stretched. Joint pain mainly occurs due to inflammation in those areas. There are many reason, like high urea level, blood pressure level and hormone levels too. Inflammation causes swelling of joints as well, which many suffer from. And severe cases are arthritis diseases. Also gastric problems can also cause pain in joints, muscles orinternal organs.
