Chapter 12

Rin turned on his phone to check the time. 2.30pm. We've been in the arcade for an hour already. Time to go home. He turned off his phone. "Rei, let's go..." He turned to see Rei running off into the crowd.

"...home?"

"Hey! Wait! Where are you going?!" Rin yelled, panicked as he dashed after her, but only to be swept by the crowd. Rin cursed and squeezed his way through. But Rei was already gone.

Rei raced after the hooded figure, who turned into an alley. She followed still, turning into the alley, then stopped. The hooded figure had stopped running and was facing her. "Lucifer, what are you doing here?" She growled. A smirk appeared on the person's face.

"I'm not Lucifer."

The voice said from behind her. Before she could react, she felt a stab of a needle in the neck, and liquid being inserted. Rei gasped and covered her neck once it was taken out. She swirled around, but the culprit was already gone.

"Rei!"

Rin ran up to her. "Are you all right? What happened?" He fretted over her, checking to see if there were any injuries. Rei remained silent, only one question flooded her mind: Who was that?

Back at the dorm, everything went on like normal. Rei was reading the new manga Rin bought when her hand unconsiously travelled the her neck where she was injected. The same, creepy voice filled her ears. "I'm not Lucifer." She furrowed her eyebrows.

She was sure it wasn't Lucifer, as the voice was high pitched and sounded like a woman's. Maybe one of Lucifer's underlings? Then her thoughts swirled back to the feeling of cold metal pricked her skin. So far, whatever she or he had injected hadn't taken effect and no symptons showed up. I'll ask Yukio to help me take a blood test tomorrow, she thought nodding to herself and redirecting her attention to the manga.

The room door creaked open and Rin walked in. "Rei, dinner's ready." Rei closed her manga and placed it on the table, then followed Rin to the dining room. Rin had cooked curry rice for that night, an amazing aroma greeted Rei's nose. Almost immediately, she forgot about the incident that happened this afternoon. But Rin did not, apparently, as he spoke: "Now tell me what happened this afternoon."

Rei paused in her actions for a while, then said: "It was nothing." And continued with her dinner. Rin was not satisfied with her answer. "Tell me," he pressed. "I said, it's nothing," she emphasized.

A loud slam on the table jolted her a little, otherwise she had no reaction. "Something obviously happened in that alley," Rin scowled down at her. "And you're gonna tell me what happened." Rei remained quiet.

"Answer me!"

"I said, it's NOTHING!" Rei pummelled her fist. "Stop acting like you care for me!" "Hah? Now you're being stubborn!" "And you're being persistent!" They glared at each other. Kuro cowered under the table, whimpering under the heated glares.

"First off, it's my job as your guardian to take care of you. Second, of course it's my business!"

"First off, no one said anything about you being my guardian! Second, like I said, you are too persistent. Nothing means nothing! Or is that brain of yours so dumb until you can't understand a simple 'nothing'?"

Guys, don't fight... Kuro whimpered, trying to stop them. They ignored him.

"How ungrateful! I'm taking care of you and you call me dumb! Is that your way of appreciation?"

"Who asked you to take care of me? I can take care of myself just find!"

"If it wasn't for me, you may be killed by the Vatican right now!"

"I think that's a better option! After all, it won't cause any extra trouble to anyone!"

"Why did you even come to Assiah in the first place?!"

"Like I said, IT'S NONE OF YOUR BUSINESS!"

"Fine! Run away for all I care! Let's see if someone decides to exorcist you for good! When that time comes, don't come running back to me crying!" Rin roared, which seemed to struck Rei. Her face darkened. "All right. If that's what you want. I won't bother you anymore," she said in a low voice, and stormed up the stairs. A loud slam was heard and everything died down.

"...."

Rin, apologise to her... Kuro pleaded. But Rin was too furious. "Let her be. See when can she hold, that ungrateful hound. Deserves to be Lucifer's pet," Rin spat, and stormed off to do his own business.

"That stupid Son of Satan! Who does he think he is?! I could kill him right there and now if I want to!" Rei grumbled to no one in particular as she stomped her feet. "Hmph!  I definately won't apologise to him! It was his fault in the first place!" She picked up the half-read manga and continued to read it, until her eyes shut and she fell asleep.

*
"You useless hound dog! Be glad I actually took you in!"

"How ungrateful! I'm taking care of you and you call me dumb?!"

"Get your lazy ass moving! If it wasn't for me, you would've been dead starving right now! Maybe that's a better option!"

"If it wasn't for me, you may be killed by the Vatican right now!"

Rei jolted awake. Cold sweat rolled down her forehead to her ear, her body still trembling a little from the nightmare. A head-splitting migrane flooded her head, as she groaned and coughed.

Trying to ignore it, she observed her surroundings. Yukio was soundly asleep on the other side with Rin's bunk bed underneath. Rin was snoring loudly like usual, so no one could hear her. She was currently in her bed with her manga on her chest. She slowly got up and coughed a little more.

Maybe a little water would do, she thought and climbed down from the bed, and staggered to the door, her head in her hand. She silently pushed the door open and headed to the kitchen. The hallway spun as she walked, as she clumsily walked towards the stairs, but collapsed into a coughing fit.

Black spots entered her vision as she hacked so harshly her body trembled. Her head was pounding, and she felt like her throat was on fire as she gasped for air. Her body temperature rose in an alarming rate. She curled into a tight ball and dug her nails into her skin so hard it drew blood. Voices echoed into her ears, whispering snide sentences, trying to break her sanity. With a scream, her body erupted into white flames. One word flashed in her mind.

"RIN!!!"

*
Rin woke up with a jolt. Something had triggered him, causing his senses to awake. He blinked a few times and rubbed his eyes. He swore he heard Rei calling his name. But it wasn't morning yet. He turned to look at Rei in her bed, only to see she wasn't there. Maybe she went to the bathroom, he thought to himself, about to shut his eyes again when his whole body jerked.

He suddenly knew he had to find Rei.

Rin hurried out of bed, trying not to wake Yukio up and crept to the dorm door, opening it with a small creak and went outside to the dark hallways. Only that it wasn't dark.

A familiar white wolf with twin tails stood in the middle of the hallway, its white fire illuminating through the darkness. Black tattooes curled around its paws into a pattern, leading up to its body. Rei noticed Rin's presence and turned to stare at him. Her menacing hybrid eyes pierced his blue orbs and they stared.

"Uh, Rei? What are you doing-"

Rei pounced at Rin. Rin screamed and ducked to the side, barely missing her sharpened claws. He patted at his side blindly, then realised he had left the kurikara in the room. He cursed under his breath and got up. Rei charged at Rin. His eyes widened.

"Wait wait wait wait-!"

Rin jumped to the side and Rei crashed into the wall behind him. But that didn't affect her as she immediately chased after him. Just as she took one step, purple lightning shot out and caged her in a ball of purple light. Rin gaped in surprise. The seals! That's right! I'm safe!

Rei broke out almost immediately and growled.

Or not.

More seals were activate, but none of them stopped her. Rin tried to convince her. "Rei, stop! Calm down! It's me, Rin! Stop or the seals will hurt you!" Rei kept resisting, like his words did not even reach her ears, as if she was controlled like a mindless robot.

Rei finally managed to pin Rin down on the floor. Her body was burnt from the seals, but showed no pain. She lowered her teeth to Rin's neck, deaf to Rin's desperate pleas to snap her back. Rin closed his eyes, preparing the worst, a sense of deja vu.

There was a sound of gun shot, and instead of intense pain he expected, Rei slumped on him. He 'oofed' under her weight, but Rei shrinked and turned back to her human form. Rin looked up and saw Yukio holding his gun.

"...You didn't kill her, did you?"

"No, that was a tranquilizer. But you have a lot of explaning to do." Yukio sighed and looked at the clock which showed 2.11am. "The HQ should be informed about this now." Rin sprung up. "How? But they'll kill her!"

"Back in the research lab, they had implanted a tracking device for in case she runs off or turns into a wolf like now. Put some clothes on for her and bring her back in the room, will you? They should be arriving soon." Yukio reloaded his gun and disappeared back into their room, leaving Rin in the hallway with Rei in his arms.

Rin gently wiped away blood that came out from her nose due to the effect of the seals. Many questions had surfaced:

Why did she suddenly shift into a wolf?

Why did she attack him?

Why didn't his words affect her, like she was being controlled?

Most urgently, what can he say in her defense when people from the HQ arrives?
