Part 41: From Best Friends to Colleagues!
The producer moved aside and Randhir and Sanyukta came face to face after 6 months.
Producer: Randhir....she is the writer of our play Ms....
Randhir (in a trance): Sanyukta!
The producer and casting director were confused as to how come Randhir knows Sanyukta.
Naina: You guys know each other?
Before Randhir could say anything, Sanyukta interrupted her.
Sanyukta: I don't really know him.... but I have seen some of his work.....(moving her hand towards Randhir introducing herself) Hi....I am Sanyukta Aggarwal, writer of this play!
Randhir was shocked at Sanyukta's claim that she didn't know him. He felt confused, angry and frustrated seeing her introducing herself so formally to him. He had so many emotions going through within him but he knew that this was not the place for getting his answers. He gulped his emotions and shook her hand introducing himself formally.
Randhir: Hi.... I am Randhir Shekhawat!
Sanyukta: Nice meeting you Mr. Shekhawat! Welcome to the team!
Randhir: Thanks!
Sanyukta: Great! So, you can collect the contract today and go through the terms and conditions and tomorrow I can give you the narration and explain the storyline and script to you. After that we will have a few workshops working on your character sketch and create a little backstory to provide you with a few reference points. I hope I am clear!
Randhir: Yeah....that would be fine with me!
Sanyukta: So, I will see you tomorrow!
Randhir: yeah!
After that Sanyukta left the auditorium, while Randhir kept looking at her. He had so many questions, feelings and unexpressed emotions inside him. He really wanted to talk to her and know what's going on in her life but he couldn't do it in front of other people. He wanted to talk to her alone.
Randhir was lost in his thoughts when someone tapped his shoulder. It was the casting director, Naina.
Naina: Randhir? Are you Ok?
Randhir: Umm yeah...Why?
Naina: I have been calling you for last 5 minutes....but you seem to be lost somewhere!
Randhir: Ummm....no....I was just a little zoned out! So, what were you saying?
Naina: I was asking you to come with me....so that you can take a copy of the contract to go through it.
Randhir: Yeah....Ok!
Naina went in her cabin followed by Randhir. She searched her drawers, but she couldn't find the contract.
Naina: I think the contract is with Sanyukta.....Let me call her and ask if she is still in her cabin....because if she left, then I wont be able to give you the copy of the contract today.
Randhir: Ok....
Naina called Sanyukta and asked if she was still in her cabin.
Naina: Great! She's still in her cabin but we better hurry because she has to go somewhere urgently!
Both Naina and Randhir moved towards Sanyukta's cabin. Naina knocked on her cabin door and Sanyukta permitted them to come in. Sanyukta was actually inside the attached washroom when Randhir and Naina entered.
Naina: Sanyukta, where is the copy of contract for actors?
Sanyukta (from inside the washroom): Naina....its kept in the first drawer of my table in a yellow envelope!
Naina (opening the drawer and taking out the yellow envelope and checking it): Yup....I found it. But Sanyukta, this is the original one....I have to give only a copy to Randhir for his reference.
Sanyukta: Naina.....please get it photocopied. I really don't have any time at all. In fact, ask my intern Anjali to get it photocopied!
Naina: Yeah fine! .....(to Randhir) I am sorry Randhir...you have to wait for a few minutes.
Randhir: That's alright!
Naina called Anjali and she came inside the cabin.
Naina: Anjali, please go and get this contract photocopied immediately and in fact get two copies of it.
Anjali (taking the contract): Alright Mam! I will get this photocopied.
Naina: Yeah...and please make it fast.....
Anjali: Ok mam!
Anjali left, while Naina also moved outside Sanyukta's cabin to make a call. Randhir was waiting inside the cabin alone and was observing Sanyukta's cabin. He saw a family pic kept on her table. He was just observing the picture when he heard the washroom door opening. He immediately kept the photo back and turned around trying to act all cool.
Sanyukta: What are you doing in my cabin, Mr. Shekhawat?
Randhir thought that this was the right time totalk to Sanyukta as they were alone in her cabin. He needed answers to hisquestions. He immediately turned around but he couldn't believe his eyes whenhe saw Sanyukta in front of his eyes. All his questions left his mind as hetried to perceive Sanyukta's new look. Sanyukta was standing right in front ofhis eyes wearing a blue crop top with a blue pleated skirt. She had done alittle make up and made up her hair.
When he saw her after his audition, she was dressed in a simple kurti and legging set. She got ready here only to go somewhere.
Sanyukta (clicking her fingers in front of Randhir): Mr. Shekhawat!
Randhir (coming out of trance): Ummm...yeah?
Sanyukta: What are you doing in my cabin?
Randhir: Ummm....I was waiting for Naina to bring me the copy of the contract.
Sanyukta (taking off her spectacles and keeping them inside her purse): Alright....I am in a hurry....so maybe you can wait for her outside!
Randhir was shocked to see Sanyukta keeping her spectacles inside. Now, Sanyukta was desperately searching for something!
Randhir: What are you looking for?
Sanyukta (rudely): That's none of your business!
Randhir: I was just asking to help you out....
Sanyukta (coldly): I don't need your help!
Sanyukta was desperately searching her drawers and little wooden cabinets to look for something. It seemed as if she was having a panic attack.
Sanyukta (calling someone on her phone): Anjali come to my cabin right now...!!...Leave whatever you are doing.....I need you in my cabin right now!
Sanyukta continued to search desperately for that thing. After 5 minutes, Anjali came inside the cabin and Sanyukta exploded on her like Lava.
Sanyukta (angrily): What the hell Anjali? Where are my "lenses"? You cleared my table, right?
Anjali (stammering out of fear): Mam....I...I...
Sanyukta (angrily): Just answer me damn it!
Anjali (almost tearing up and hiccupping): I don't....don't know mam!
Randhir seeing Anjali almost crying thought to calm Sanyukta down...
Randhir: Sanyukta calm down.....
Sanyukta (Angrily): You mind your own business!
Randhir was shocked at Sanyukta's behaviour. She was behaving so irrationally. The Chashmish he knew was so soft spoken to everyone in her life. The professor who never even scolded her students irrationally was today shouting at her intern for a silly mistake. It was like he was seeing a totally different person in front of him. Randhir was lost in his thoughts when Naina entered the cabin.
Naina: Guys.... what's going on here?....(to Anjali) Anjali....did you get the copy of the contract?
Anjali (hiccupping and trying to control her tears): Yes mam....(handing the copy of the contract to her) here it is!
Anjali handed the contract to Naina and left Sanyukta's cabin.
Naina (handing her the lenses): By the way Sanyukta....you left your lenses today at my table in the morning.
Naina handed the contract to Randhir and left her cabin.
Sanyukta immediately put on her lenses and picked up her purse.
Randhir: I need to talk to you!
Sanyukta (Coldly): I don't think there's anything to talk between us.....Anyways I am in a hurry! We can discuss the script tomorrow, Mr. Shekhawat.
Randhir: Its not about the script.... It's about us!
Sanyukta: I think that I made it very clear that there is nothing to talk!
Sanyukta started leaving her cabin and Randhir followed her in the corridor.
Randhir: Sanyukta listen to me....Sanyukta...Sanyukta
However, Sanyukta did not respond to him and kept walking.
Randhir: Sanyukta....Sanyukta....Chashmish stop!
Hearing 'Chashmish' from him, Sanyukta came to a halt. After 6 months, she heard that endearment from his mouth. However, only a moment later she left the building. Randhir saw her stopping for a moment when he called her Chashmish.
Randhir (in mind): Chashmish....you can run away and deny knowing me in front of others....but you are not one of those who run away from the truth and the truth is that you can't ignore me for long Chashmish.
Randhir saw Sanyukta getting in a cab and going away. It seemed like destiny may have brought Sanyukta and him face to face but he was yet to find his Chashmish in her. Everything seemed same, yet it was very different. With these thoughts he went back home.
Randhir's home, 7 PM
Randhir returned home around 7 PM. He was very tired and just wanted to take his mind off Sanyukta but he couldn't. He reached home, took a shower and joined his parents for dinner.
Randhir's dad: How was your day Rockstar? Your mom told me you went for an audition for theatre...
Randhir: Yeah dad....
Randhir's dad: So.....how did your audition go?
Randhir (playing with his food and answering his dad in a dull voice): It went well dad.....I got the part....
Randhir's parents noticed that he was sounding very low....
Randhir's dad (keeping his hand on Randhir's shoulder): What's wrong Rockstar?
Randhir (coming out of trance): Uhhh....nothing dad...everything is fine!
Randhir's mom: Then why are you so lost Ron? I mean.....you got the part.....you should be happy but you don't seem happy!
Randhir (fake smiling): Of course, I am happy mom....!
Randhir's mom (looking at him keenly): If you are saying that you are happy.....then I believe you Ron!
His parents started conversing with each other while Randhir silently ate his food.
After dinner, His mom brought a bowl of chocolate ice cream.
Randhir's mom: Since Ron has got a part and we will get to see him perform live on stage....so we should celebrate it with ice cream.
Randhir's dad was about to take the bowl when his mom snatched that bowl.
Randhir's mom: Harsh you are getting only one scoop!
Randhir's dad: Avantika....please....see we are celebrating Rockstar's success....be a sport and give me the double scoop bowl! Please
Randhir's mom (handing him the single scoop bowl): nope.....single scoop it is!
Randhir's dad reluctantly took that bowl and started eating.
Randhir's mom: Ron.... your ice cream is melting....
Randhir: Umm...yeah mom.
Everyone was enjoying the ice cream when Randhir cleared his throat to say something.
Randhir: Umm Mom.... can I ask you something?
Randhir's mom: Since when did you start asking for permission before saying something? (Checking his forehead and teasing him) Are you catching some kind of flu Ron?
Randhir: Mom please!
Randhir's mom: Ok fine....tell me....
Randhir: Ummm did you ever talk to Anjana aunty after coming back from Delhi?
Randhir's mom: Anju?.....no not really Ron! You remember that after coming to Mumbai, I had to leave for a seminar in London for my NGO.....after that I got busy with work and maybe she also got busy in her life.
Randhir just nodded to his mom's words absentmindedly!
Randhir's mom: But Ron.... why are you suddenly asking about Anju? Did you talk to Sanyukta?
Randhir (standing up): Just like that mom....Umm....Mom I am tired and I have an early morning meeting with the writer of the play tomorrow....so I will go and sleep! Good night!
Randhir's parents: good night beta!
Later that night, Randhir's mom was going to sleep after switching off all the lights when she saw that lights of Randhir's room were on. She went and saw that he was sitting on his study table and was writing something. She knocked at the door and Randhir saw her standing there.
Randhir: Mom! come in....you aren't asleep yet?
Randhir's mom: No....I was just switching off the lights when I saw that lights of your room were on. So, I thought to check up on you. You said that you were tired and wanted to sleep but I see you are working on something.....anything important?
Randhir quickly closed whatever he was writing and kept it aside.
Randhir: Nothing important mom....
Randhir's mom: Ron is everything Ok? You seem very lost nowadays....
Randhir (not looking at her): Everything is fine mom.....
Randhir's mom (understanding that he doesn't want to share anything): Alright then....
His mom was about to go when Randhir called her again.
Randhir: Mom...
Randhir's mom: Yeah Ron?
Randhir: Mom do people change overtime?....I mean can someone change completely over time?
Randhir's mom: Ron....change is a constant in life.....however a complete change is not a possibility!
Randhir: But why would a person change so drastically?
Randhir's mom: Ron....there can be multiple reasons for someone to change their personality. It's a part of growing up. Sometimes we change for someone whom we love, sometimes a person changes just to adapt to his surroundings, then there's peer pressure as well. But according to me most people change because of their circumstances. Circumstances often bring about a drastic change in someone's life.
Randhir: Does that mean that we cannot become the person we were before those circumstances came in our life.
Randhir's mom: That's not true Ron.....a person might change his attitude, overall persona etc. but his/ her heart remains the same. The soul and human inside us cannot change drastically. A good human being will always have a good heart. Moreover, if we really want the previous personality of that person back then what we can do is not change ourselves.
Randhir: Means?
Randhir's mom: I mean that we can try to behave with them in the same way we behaved with them in the past. Whether it is being funny with them with all our quirks!
Randhir (thinking something and smiling): Thanks Mom.....
Randhir's mom: Anytime Ron.....now good night and sleep tight!
Randhir: Good night mom!
After that Randhir went to bed but sleep was far away from his eyes. It was a long day for him. Never in his wildest dreams did he thought of meeting Sanyukta like this. Sanyukta's changed demeanour, her cold behaviour, her changed personality.... everything was really bothering him. However, the only silver lining in all this was that Sanyukta was following her passion.....she was writing professionally....and this simple fact was enough for Randhir to at least smile thinking that Chashmish is finally living her dream! Moreover, his mom's words gave him an idea to bring his dearest Chashmish back.....
Sunday, 9 AM, Prithvi theatre
Randhir was running towards Sanyukta's cabin. He didn't want to be late. He knew Sanyukta was very particular about time. Moreover, he wanted to solve all the misunderstandings between them. He reached her cabin but no one was there. He came to the auditorium and saw Sanyukta's assistant Anjali working there. She still seemed upset. Randhir remembered that she was almost moved to tears yesterday. She was just a 17-year-old student who became victim of the situation. So, Randhir thought to cheer her up.
Randhir: Hey....Anjali right?
Anjali (wiping her tear and turning around): Yes....yes sir! Do you need something? What can I help you with?
Randhir (seriously): Actually Anjali....I think you have lost something....I don't know if it's an earring or an accessory.....something is missing!
Anjali (checking her earrings and watch and everything): I don't understand sir.....what is missing?
Randhir (softly): Your cute smile!
Hearing his words Anjali's frown turned upside down and she finally smiled and even blushed a little.
Randhir: See its right there....now you look good!
Anjali: Thank you sir!
Randhir: Don't call me sir yaar...call me Randhir....you can call your strict boss Sanyukta, Ma'am....
Anjali: Ma'am is not strict!
Randhir (surprised): Even after getting scolded, you are defending her?
Anjali: Ma'am is just very honest. She wears her heart on her sleeve. She must be very tensed to have scolded me like this. Ma'am has a heart of gold. She provided me a paid internship when I needed it the most. I can never return her favours. The least I can do is help her to take her stress out...even if that means to get scolded by her!
Randhir: That's really sweet of you Anjali! By the way where is your beloved Sanyukta Ma'am?
Anjali: She is backstage.....
Randhir: Ok thanks.....
Randhir went backstage and saw Sanyukta talking to Naina there. After a few minutes Naina left and Randhir came to Sanyukta.
Randhir: Sanyukta....
Sanyukta (turning around): Mr. Shekhawat...you are right on time....
Hearing Mr. Shekhawat from her mouth irritated Randhir to a great extent!
Randhir (holding her shoulder): Its Randhir and you know it!
Randhir had held her shoulder very lightly but Sanyukta winced in extreme pain. Randhir immediately backed out.
Randhir (concerned): Are you Ok? I didn't hold you so....
Sanyukta (wincing in pain): Just let it be Mr. Shekhawat.....and mind you that I don't know you!
Saying this Sanyukta went away.
Randhir (remembering his mom's words and smirking): You might have forgotten "Randhir", Chashmish but I will remind you who I am right now!
He went on stage and saw Anjali and at a little distance he saw Sanyukta.
Randhir: Hey Anjali....lets have some fun with your Sanyukta ma'am
Anjali: I don't think so you should do anything like that...
Randhir: You just help me out with the props and music....
Anjali: Alright....
After that Randhir asked her to put in some music and get a few props. He was ready to remind who he was to Sanyukta in his charming style.

Later Randhir went to Sanyukta's cabin to meet her but he stopped seeing the scenario in front of him.
There Sanyukta was standing in front of her assistant holding her ears.
Sanyukta (holding her ears cutely): I am really very sorry for my rude behaviour yesterday, Anjali!
Anjali: Mam please don't apologise....I understand!
Sanyukta: No, it was my fault and I am really very sorry for my behaviour!
Anjali: Its alright mam!
Sanyukta: Ok....great....so how about you have a paid day off today?
Anjali: Mam....there's no need for it!
Sanyukta: Actually, it is required. You are a very hard working and sincere person....so you deserve this paid day off! Go and have a great day!
Anjali (happily): Thank you so much mam!
Anjali went away happily while Randhir smiled seeing a glimpse of his Chashmish back!
Sanyukta was working on her laptop when she heard a knock on her cabin door.
Sanyukta (still concentrating on her work): Come in!
Sanyukta waited for the person to say something but when the person didn't say anything, she looked up from the screen of her laptop and saw Randhir standing there silently looking at her.
Sanyukta (adjusting her spectacles): Mr. Shekhawat....please have a seat!
Randhir took a seat in front of her.
Sanyukta: I hope you have gone through your copy of the contract......Are you fine with the terms and conditions?
Randhir had totally forgotten to go through the contract. He was silent for a few minutes and then he thought to lie and agree anyways....
Randhir: Ummm yeah....I..
Before Randhir could say something more Sanyukta passed him another copy of the contract!
Sanyukta (without looking at him and typing on the laptop): Go through it properly right now.....and don't waste my time with your lies. I know that you are very good at it but let's save that acting talent of yours for the stage!
Randhir (tauntingly): I thought you didn't know me!
Sanyukta (coldly): I don't......
Randhir (frustrated): Well, I know you and I know you don't lie....so how come you managed to lie in front of so many people?
Sanyukta: I still don't lie! As far as what I said is concerned then that was nothing but the truth!
Randhir: So you are saying that you don't know your friend.....for that matter best friend!
Sanyukta: We don't block the numbers of our friends, Mr. Shekhawat.... We block the numbers of strangers. So, we are strangers and as I said....I have seen some of your work and I must say you are good! So, lets put this chit chat of yours aside and work professionally as colleagues! What do you say?
Randhir (baffled by her words): Block the number! What are you saying?
Sanyukta: Again.....I said that save your acting talent for the stage! Shall we get to work!
Randhir was about to say something but Sanyukta interrupted him!
Sanyukta: Great....so let me start with the script narration!
After that Sanyukta started narrating the storyline and script to him. He had many questions and things to say but he did not want to interrupt her while working. So, he silently concentrated on the script narration.
Sanyukta was very proficient in her work. She narrated each and every part of the script to him very efficiently. She had also prepared a character sketch for his reference and a little backstory to help him embrace the character.
While Sanyukta was narrating the script to him....he noticed her properly for the first time. Sanyukta had grown weaker from the last time he saw her in Delhi. Her eyes had dark circles and her forehead had these stress lines. Although she had this poker expression on her face which didn't gave away much of what is going inside her but somehow Randhir could look past her professional demeanour.
Finally, Sanyukta completed the narration of the script and his character sketch.
Sanyukta: So, that was it! Do you have any questions for me?
At that moment Randhir had many questions for Sanyukta like What is going on with her? What is she doing in Mumbai? When did she came to Mumbai? Why is she so upset from him? Why didn't she contact him in the past 6 months despite being in Mumbai? What was she saying about blocking numbers? But instead of all these questions he chose to ask the one which seemed the most important right now.....
Randhir: Just one.....Are you doing Okay?
Sanyukta looked up and her eyes met with Randhir's. Sanyukta felt very scared and vulnerable at that moment. She felt as if Randhir could look inside her. His question seemed very simple.....yet it was the most unexpected one for her because she did not have an answer to that!
Suddenly Sanyukta's phone rang and they both came out of trance. Sanyukta saw her phone and picked it up before Randhir could have a glance at it.
Sanyukta: Mr. Shekhawat....I have to take this call.....till that time you can go through the contract and let me know if you are comfortable with the terms and conditions!
Randhir just nodded his head while Sanyukta went out of her cabin to take the call. Randhir went through the contract and noted the points he wanted to discuss. After a few minutes, Sanyukta came back. Randhir was about to say something when he noticed that Sanyukta seemed a little lost.
Randhir (concerned): Is everything Ok?
Sanyukta (coming out of trance and changing the topic): Did you go through the contract?
Randhir (understanding that she doesn't want to talk): Yeah....I have a problem with few things!
Sanyukta: I am listening....!
Randhir: Its written that I have to come for rehearsal on all weekends and after two months prep....we would have live stage shows.....which is fine with me but the workshops taking place on weekdays is not fine with me.....I work in a TV show which require 14-15 hours per day....so this is not possible for me!
Sanyukta: Then back out!
Randhir (befuddled by her words): What.... you won't even try to adjust the schedule of your workshops? I mean I am taking out so much of my time for this and you....
Sanyukta (interrupting him coldly): You are not doing it for free Mr. Shekhawat......we are paying you a handsome amount of money for this. You are not doing social service for us! If you can work for us.... then great.... otherwise, you are most welcome to leave!
Randhir: I want to talk to the producer!
Sanyukta (sarcastically): You know what.... go ahead and call him! If he picks up your phone, then do inform me....I will be happy to negotiate the workshop schedule for you!
Randhir was astonished at Sanyukta's behaviour. She was not at all being considerate about his situation. It was as if she wanted him out of the play. Then it struck him "She wanted him out of the play" and she couldn't reject him during the auditions because his performance was genuinely good.
Randhir (Thinking in mind): If this is how you want to play the game Chashmish....then be it. I am not leaving this play at any cost!
Sanyukta: So, what have you decided?
Randhir: I will manage....I am signing the contract!
Sanyukta: Are you sure?
Randhir: Yes, I am sure!
Sanyukta (handing him the contract): Fine then.....! Here sign it.
Randhir signed the contract and completed all the formalities and got up.
Randhir (forwarding his hand): I hope we will make a good team Ms. Aggarwal!
Sanyukta (shaking his hand): I hope so too Mr. Shekhawat!
That was a firm handshake between two former best friends and current professional colleagues!
My POV
From sharing their innermost thoughts with each other to now shaking hands as professional colleagues.....a lot has changed between Randhir and Sanyukta. Sanyukta has changed and Randhir is desperately vouching for his Chashmish in the cold-hearted demeanour of Sanyukta. Has something really changed with Sanyukta? Is she not the same quirky cute professor that Randhir knew? Is Sanyukta's changed demeanour, a product of her circumstances? Will Sanyukta acknowledge Randhir and his friendship again? Will Randhir be able to bring his Chashmish back or is she lost forever? To know the answers to all these questions, you guys need to read the next part!
This part is around 5000 words long. So, guys it's a very early update. I hope you guys like this update as I have worked really hard on it.
