Yes the obsidian is creative. My cousin likes breaking blocks, and this is a cobblestone generator, so I thought it would be best to keep it safe. Also, that is literally the only lava source I've seen in the world. I accidentally obsidian-ed the first one, and this was a replacement when I broke the annoying obsidian. The trap doors have a water current and the broken blocks just follow it.
