Chapter 1
Chapter 1
[December 2nd, 1889 ; Time: Midnight]
The midnight breeze of Nashville, Tennessee spoke nothing but sorrow. Not a cricket chirped, not an owl called, not a mouse scampered through the land. Everything seemed dead silent, and yet echoed the same sadness from the 3rd floor of the Saint Thomas West Hospital.
The sorrow of a lost mother haunted the maternity ward. Two new children wept, crying out for a mother they no longer had. The oldest bore the unseen mark of the disease that took her mother from the world: a disease with no cure or information on what it is. The doctors and nurses tending to the children felt pity and sorrow for the newborn children.
The door swung open, and the mother's brother stepped into the room. His green eyes widened when he saw the body of his sister and hung his head, his shock turning to grief. He was too late. He knew she was sick, but he did not think it was so serious until now. He wished he had arrived sooner to help his sister to live, or at least to say farewell, but he was too slow.
The oldest child, a female, was screaming and crying, demanding to be held by her mother, and the doctor that was helping her couldn't help but cry a little bit. While her younger brother was just wanting to be held by someone, and he didn't care who it was. Both children shared their mother's void-black hair, but the female had emerald-colored eyes and her brother had his mother's brown eyes, which shocked some of the doctors since the children should have lighter eyes at this point in time due to lack of melanin.
What confused the doctors was how small the female was. She was way smaller than her younger brother, almost as though she hadn't finished developing before being born.
Their uncle didn't even notice the doctors returning with the children at first, he was sitting down in the chair next to the bed, crying. He wished he was there to say farewell to his sister. He then heard the newborn girl crying and looked up at the doctor holding her. He saw how tiny she was, his eyes widened as he slowly got up. He took the child from the doctor and held her in his arms. She was almost too fragile to hold normally, like she'd melt if he held her incorrectly. Their uncle slowly walked over and the doctors handed him his nephew. He felt like crying even more, since he could now see that the little girl he was holding looked an awful lot like his sister. "Mavis..." He muttered the name of his lost sister. "I am so sorry.."
As soon as he returned to his home, he then realized that there were no cribs to put the children in. He sighed in disappointment and sorrow, echoing the breeze. He quickly made makeshift cribs from cardboard boxes, pillows, and blanket, then set the newborn children down into them. Relieved, he took a deep breath and strayed to the kitchen to meet Jack Daniels, an old friend that was always there when he needed them.
It was then he heard crying, the baby girl woke up and was still demanding her mother. He sighed as he walked back over to the makeshift cribs and looked down at the small children. He then gently picked up the female and held her. The only person he thought of that could possibly calm down the baby girl was their father, but their father didn't even know they existed or that Mavis was dead.
"I suppose this means I have to name them", he thought. "For the baby girl, Sabrina. Mavis has always wanted a daughter named Sabrina. Now, for the boy.. I think "Julian" would be a good name for him."
As soon as he set Sabrina down, Julian woke up and began crying.
