NOT like cat and water
(W)
Two weeks after Bruce Wayne had officially adopted Y/n, he agreed to go out on a date. He was reluctant to leave y/n alone most of the night, especially since he still hadn't figured why the baby cried more often than other babies. But Alfred assured him he would take care of Y/n.
So after a night out in the other suit, Bruce threw on a casual blazer over a white tee shirt, and took a bottle of wine to Selina Kyle's apartment.
He cradled the wine in one arm and a ran his other hand through his hair before knocking on the door.
"Must be my lucky day, you came!" She joked as she stood against the door frame, wearing a pink cocktail dress.
"Really, cause I crossed paths with a black cat tonight," he teased back to her.
They'd both crossed paths earlier that night, in their other suits. Catwoman had eagerly convinced Batman to let Bruce go.
And he'd come.
"Well come in before a piano falls on you some how!" Selina let him in and he offered her the wine.
"For you, m'lady!"
"Thanks. It'll actually go with dinner,"
"Nice. You cooked?" Bruce asked as he followed her to the kitchen.
"Well, when I don't have a day job, I spend my day doing other things." She pulled out two flutes from the cabinet and walked back to the living room, where a two chaired table stood prepared in front of the terrace.
"That are separate from your night job?" He meant it lightly.
"Absolutely. In the morning, I go visit old homes and orphanages, and all that good work."
"Social working cat burglar," he tilted his head in mock amusement as he popped the cork.
"Vigilante detective." Selina spat right back as she sat in her seat.
They talked about everything in every life they had, laughing, sometimes having philosophical discussions about ideologies.
They cleaned up dinner together. He helped her carry the dishes to the kitchen, she washed, he dried. There wasn't much formality after dinner, they grabbed a mug of coffee and went to the living room.
Selina snuggled in her favorite spot while Bruce reclined his head, laying his arm across the ledge of sofa.
"So, haven't seen the Batman about too often. Know anything about that?"
The comment seemed to snap him out to reality.
"Huh? Oh he's still about, just took on a project that requires more attention. Doing more, behind the scenes, so to say. The police have become more competent."
"Uhuh. And how long is that lasting?"
"Well, the project takes most of the nights, but he should grow out of it in a couple months. I hope,"
"I see. And does this free up more personal time in the day for you?"
"You can say that. Though most mornings I'm just trying to get in some sleep." He said out loud, exhausted.
"Ever got time for something else?" She asked with a hint of mischief, but he was slow.
But not too slow.
"Else like what?" He played along as she crawled closer to him.
Selina laughed.
"Let me show you," she breathed on his lips and kissed him.
Bruce returned her kisses, letting her push him down on the sofa as he ran his arms over her sides.
He slid his hand under her dress, and he could swear that she moaned. But that's not what he heard. It sounded like a baby's cry. They both stopped for a second, trying to listen for it, but it didn't come again, and they went back to their play.
The cries came back, incessantly this time. Selina tucked her head under his chin and let out a laugh.
"Your jacket's crying." She joked.
Bruce's eyes snapped open and sense came back to him. He gently slid Selina off him and jumped to his feet, immediately pulling out his cellphone to call back.
"Hey! Is she alright? Uhuh, try giving her a bath, maybe it'll soothe her. I'm leaving right now." He talked short and quickly hung up without the formality of a goodbye.
Then turned back to face Selina.
"You...wanna tell me?" She asked, her brows raised.
"Trust me?" He held out his hand.
"You mean you got a secret more important than the one I already know?"
"I honest to God don't know yet, but I will choose her over anything."
Selina rolled her eyes and slammed her hand on his. He pulled her up and she didn't dilly dally, she could sense his hurry.
She didn't even have her jacket on before they were out the building and in front of his car.
"Give me a little back story?" She asked, swinging on her jacket as he fished for his keys.
"Started out as a project. Ended up staying. Tell you the rest after you meet her."
Selina pouted her lips in genuine amusement. Now what thing in the world had the power to make the stubborn, dual identity Bruce Wayne, bend to his knees.
She soon found out he literally had to bend on his knees-to pick up the tiny crying baby out of her bouncer. Selina silently watched the man, who had just hours ago broken backs and bashed heads, that same man cradled this pink crying puffball so gently as if he could hurt her with just a tighter squeeze of his hand.
Now, Selina could swear she heard Bruce sing to make this calm, while his earlier growls at the criminals still rang in her ears.
Bruce was trying everything to soothe Y/n, Selina had learned the baby's name from Alfred, but the girl wouldn't stop crying. Selina had it with hearing the baby cry in agony. She walked up to Bruce and placed a hand on his free shoulder.
"Bruce, you need to take her to the hospital."
The billionaire looked at her for a second as if she was madder than the Hatter, but then quickly regained his own senses and nodded.
Bruce gave Y/n to Selina as he prepared the baby bag, and they raced out the door to the car, which Alfred had already started.
"And how are we explaining Bruce Wayne bringing in a baby?" Alfred asked through the rear view mirror.
"You're right, can't do this right now. Alfred, drive to Star labs."
"Central city, sir?!"
"No, the one downtown. Dr. Snow is visiting."
Lucius Fox met them at the back entrance. Gratefully, y/n had fallen asleep in the car, so she didn't make any noise.
"I haven't told Dr. Snow who's bringing the kid," Lucius told them.
The startled expression on Dr. Snow's face confirmed it.
"Oh my God. You're Bruce Wayne. It-it's an honor to meet you, sir."
"Pleasure, but if we could get to work."
"Right, sorry. Any possibility you have? What are we looking for?"
"Y/n cries a lot, more than other babies her age. Hours in the night she doesn't sleep."
"Have you noticed when especially she doesn't cry?"
"When she's taking a bath."
"Is it the bath you think, or water? It more probably is water. Do you know the baby's medical history?"
"Her parents moved to Gotham from Central city. Nothing out of the ordinary about them."
"Uhuh," Caitlyn said rushed. "Was it before or after the explosion?"
"Um, after. But Y/n was born in Gotham." Bruce answered, following Caitlyn's theory.
"Right, but we learned that the radiation affected people at molecular levels, so maybe she was conceived in Central city and she was affected while in-" Caitlyn cut herself off as an idea formed in her mind.
"Dr. Snow?" Bruce asked, concern on his face.
"I'm gonna test a theory. You may not like it."
"You're serious?!" Bruce crossed his arms.
"You said she's most calm when she's in water right? Well, in the womb, babies are literally floating in a bag of water. What if, she has an aquatic ability?"
"Interesting theory. And you're testing this by..."
"Submerging her in a bath." Caitlyn announced her intention in a question.
"You wanna drown my baby?"
"Well I'm not taking her to the Sahara, now am I?"
Selina stepped up behind Bruce and wrapped her hands around his arm. Bruce relaxed his arms down and looked at Selina, his brows knotted in concern, but Selina nodded to convince him to Caitlyn's plan.
"You got any counter measures?" Bruce asked Caitlyn.
"I'll attach these nodes to her to see changes in her molecules. We'll pull her out as soon as there's a single sign of her drowning."
The world's best detective thought the plan through a million times, then relented.
"Okay." He breathed.
"Okay, I'll go set up."
Caitlyn went to another part of the lab to go set up a bath while Bruce picked up Y/n from her car seat. The baby reacted to her father's touch, snugging herself in his arm and smiling. He kissed her head and fixed her blanket, but Y/n didn't seem to like it, voicing it with a cry.
Selina observed his actions and came closer. She took the baby in her arms and opened her blankets, letting her air. Y/n calmed down. Bruce noticed.
"You're good at this." He complemented Selina.
"Well, if she is an aquatic baby, you're suffocating her in these clothes."
Caitlyn came back and led them to the other room. The Batman didn't have the guts to let his baby into the water, so Selina did it for him. She placed the naked baby in the tub, which slowly went deeper into the bath as the nodes recorded her body functions.
To their amusement, but no surprise, Y/n didn't drown. The nodes indicated no signs of drowning, and Bruce released his breath. Selina and Caitlyn looked at each other and Bruce knelt down next to the glass tub, watching his baby submerged in water.
Y/n began wiggling and twisting. When she opened her little fist, a big air bubble formed over his palm. Caitlyn immediately knelt down next to Bruce.
"You saw that, right?!" She exclaimed.
Caitlyn started making scientific observations and Bruce just watched his daughter. When her hands moved, streams of water followed her directions, and it was clear she was controlling it.
They let Y/n play till it looked like she got exhausted, and then Bruce scooped her out.
Caitlyn offered a towel, but them pulled it back.
"Well, she's drenching wet, so you might wanna dry up a little bit, but I wouldn't dry her up completely. That's why she cries."
"Thank you, Dr. Snow." Bruce genuinely said it, taking the towel from her and lightly wrapping Y/n in it.
"I can have a friend make her some clothes, help her adjust. My friend does that, he-he makes suits. Boy, Cisco's going to kill me when I tell him who's kid they're for."
Bruce laughed.
"Wait till you find out my other half. I'm sure we'll meet soon." Bruce teased and Caitlyn was confused. But Selina shook her head and scoffed a laugh.
"Let's get our baby back home, shall we?" Selina took Y/n from Bruce and cradled her in her arm, making sure to not suffocate the baby too much. Bruce watched with amazement as his girlfriend walked out with his baby without a fuss.
His life was on it's way to normal.
