History (Herstory)Part 3: Grace O'Malley, Pirate Queen
Author's note: According to some accounts, the Irish Pirate Queen Grace O' Malley negotiated the release of her son with Queen Elizabeth I in return for a military alliance. Here I try to recreate the dramatic scene in a Shakespearean sonnet. The lines in italics are spoken by Grace O' Malley, those in bold by Elizabeth.
You've got me in your parlor, Virgin Queen.
I chose the right treasure trove for my trap.
Does your barrenness ease the child's suffering seen?
No, it does not, but they mark the X on your map.
Now you have me, what game do you play?
Your New World fattened galleons left in peace?
You're mistaken on our nature, this is no parley.
If never here do I leave, my ship's raids won't cease.
Despite the hand we hold, you threaten me.
You claim to a woman's body, the heart of a man,
I am here as a mother, level into your eyes I see
Return me my flowers, or kill me while you can.
Turn your ships against the Spanish main,
And your Prince and Princess you shall claim.
