Day Eight-Bat or Rat

I have never been as confused as I was today.

Let me paint a picture for you okay. The sun is not exactly shining as snow is lightly falling down onto the dead grass. A slight wind moves the leaves off of the trees,  and makes goose bumps cover your skin. You have been driving for over six hours in a small van,  along with two siblings and your parents. Your siblings won't stop bickering whether it is about the song we are listening to,  whose foot is on what side,  who got the better side of the granola bar, and just anything they can think of to argue about.

Your siblings finally fall asleep,  and you can finally think. You look out the window at the deserted streets,  hoping you will be home soon.

"Only three hours left honey!" Your mom whispers to you as she looks back and sees the almost annoyed look on your face. You nod your head,  wondering how on earth you will survive three more hours of this hellish trip.

Less than thirty minutes later your siblings are back to bickering and arguing. Your mom can see your pleading look on your face,  and she suggests to your dad,  "Why don't we stop by a little diner and eat a bit of lunch?"

"Sounds like a great idea hun." And you are headed off course to a small diner that will let you be free from that small car.

You reach a little diner in the outskirts of town,  and your parents think it is perfect. You all pile out of the car into the freezing weather,  but at least you can stretch your legs now.

You all enter the little diner and a hostess politley takes you to your seats,  and gets you your menus.

After the orders are taken,  you all wait for your warm food to arrive. Your parents are talking amongst themselves while your siblings have no care for you,  so you just sit there quietly staring at your sparkling drink.

You excuse yourself to go to the bathroom,  and you now realize that they have decorated the restaurant for Halloween.  There are fake cob webs and jack O lanterns,  skeletons holding bowls of candy and pirates directing you to the kitchen or bathrooms, and fake flying bats on strings.

You do your business in the bathroom,  and when you are washing your hands,  you see something on the floor.  It is just out of the corner of your eyes,  but you aren't sure what it is. You turn and see what you assume to be a fake rat. You lean close to it,  and see it looks very live like.

Not afraid of rats or mice you pick it up,  trying to get a better look at it,  and now you are almost positive it is living. Not wanting to make a scene,  you quickly set it down, finishing washing your hands,  and walk out.

You go up to the front desk area where you pay,  and when the lady asks what she can help you with,  you quietly lean in and whisper,  "There was a rat in the bathroom."

She sighs and nods her head. "Thank you for bringing this to my attention. Was it black with white spots?"

You quickly think back to the small thing and try to remember. You slowly nod your head. "Damn it Todd! I need to speak to him about that.  Thank you."

And she gets up and goes to the kitchens. As you head back down to your seat you look at your drink and see a small black bat hanging off of the rim. Your parents haven't noticed it, and neither have your siblings.

You quietly take a seat and watch the little bat silently sway from side to side on your cup.

If you can imagine that, you just imagined my life.
