VI
Wow, can I just say something? Thank God for weekends. If it wasn't for alarm clocks I'd be asleep until one pm. Which, may or may not have happened today..
I groan as my eyes flutter open and trail towards my bedside clock that reads, one o' seven pm.
Before contemplating swinging my legs over the bed to stand up, memories from last night flood my mind.
My amazing date with Spencer, how he was so sweet and such a gentleman. The way we connected over the simplest of things like sports and such.
I smile to myself as I remember the kiss. It just felt right- being with him. I've liked him for so long, now that we're finally happening, I'm not surprised to say but, it feels weird. A good weird.
As quickly as my mind flutters to all the good things that happened last night, all the negative things come crashing down.
How Calvin ruined the rest of my night. The act of pouring the ice cold water itself wasn't the reason I was upset. That incident tipped off all the anger I felt towards him for annoying me over the course of the last month or so that I just lashed out on him.
Walking downstairs to grab myself a drink and some breakfast, I hear Dylan chuckle at me from the kitchen.
"Good afternoon sleepyhead." He smirked as my feet landed on the main floor and I walked to the fridge.
"Hey Dyl," I chuckled. "I didn't mean to sleep that long, I was just super tired, I guess." I explained as I grabbed the orange juice and poured myself a glass.
"You're always tired. That's not even an excuse, Ly." He laughed, taking a gulp of his energy drink.
I shrugged, "I tried."
He just smiled in response.
"Did you go for a run?" I asked, only now taking in his under armour outfit soaked in sweat and one earbud in his ear and the other left hanging by his side.
"Yeah," He nodded. "5k."
I took a gulp of my oj, "Did you time it?"
He nodded once again, "fifteen minutes." He smirked.
I shook my head, "I don't know how you do it. 5k would probably take me twenty five to thirty minutes." I laugh.
"That's still good." He attempted to encourage me.
I roll my eyes at his failure.
"I'm gonna go take a shower, see ya," He said as he put his container in the recycling.
"Good, you need one desperately." You waved your hand in your face for emphasis.
He rolled his eyes, "You shouldn't be talking Ms. Stinky Pants." He mimicked before he began to walk to the stairs.
"Wait, before I go, how was your date?" He asked, stopping at the foot of the stairs.
"You want the gory details?" I asked, raising my brow.
He froze, "There better not be any gory details," He warned.
"I'm kidding, don't worry." I laughed.
"Just tell me the gist. How was it?" He asked.
I smiled softly, looking at him as I hugged my mug to my chest. "It was good."
"Did he treat you right?" Dylan pressed.
"He treated me right." I confirmed as a small smile edged his features.
"Good." He said, before walking up the stairs to the bathroom to have his much needed shower.
I turned, rummaging through the fridge to find anything else when I felt someone's presence behind me.
Turning around, I'm met with a pair of dark blue eyes. His face is emotionless, except for the terribly small frown plastered on his lips.
I turn back around and continue going through the fridge as anger bubbles up inside my chest. I have to keep myself calm or else I might just turn around and tackle him to the ground.
He just stands there as I find an apple and take a bite out of it, closing the fridge door.
"Lyla." He says but I ignore him.
"I'm going upstairs." I interrupt, taking another bite as I run up the stairs to my room, leaving him standing in the kitchen.
-
"So we were thinking a date with McDreamy tonight," Mere gushed to Amanda and I as we sat at Mike's. Our favourite cafe in Rivermouth. "We'll order some pizza and get some snacks."
"Ooh yes!" Amanda agreed, with a wide smile.
"McSteamy is more attractive." I say absentmindedly, as my head leans against my hand on the table and I stare out into space.
Mere gasps, "What? Since when? You've always been a McDreamy girl Ly. What's up with you? Did something happen?" Mere asks me.
I look at them and sigh, shifting in the booth where we are currently sat. My cheek leaves the comfort of my palm as I shrug.
Amanda and Mere both raise a brow at me to explain.
"Okay fine. It's Calvin. I'm just so mad at him right now." I sigh.
"Why? What did he do? If your brothers find out, it's game over for him." Amanda says.
I think over Amanda's last sentence, 'if your brothers find out, it's game over for him.' I mean, that wouldn't be the worst possible thing to happen.
My brothers would throw him out, he'd stop talking to me and bugging me and it would just end up in my favour.
I smiled to myself as I imagined all of the negative energy leaving as I ran on to a field of daisies in a short summer dress as I galloped around the field freely.
Calvin tried to walk up to me on the field but I just pushed him down the hill as I smiled and put my hands on my hips, feeling accomplished.
"Ly? Hello?" Mere waved her hand in front of my face, confused, as I shook my head, entering reality again.
Ugh, reality sucks.
"Sorry, what did you say?" I asked naively, eyeing them intently.
Amanda just laughed, "You're a wonder."
"What we asked was, why are you upset with Calvin?" Mere asked.
"Oh," I groaned at the sound of his name and what happened at the end of my date with Spencer. "Well, at the end of my date with Spencer, I was standing on the porch when Calvin dumped a bucket of ice water all over me when it already was two degrees outside!" I explained.
"That jerk," Mere exclaimed. "Was your hair ruined?" Mere asked in horror.
I rolled my eyes at her, "Yes, it was in terrible knots and I'm pretty sure there were pieces of grass in it when I began to pick the grass and chuck it at him." I said sarcastically, making my voice more deep.
Mere gasped and visibly cringed. "I don't want to hear anymore."
I shrugged, "Okay." I muttered.
Amanda rolled her eyes, "I can't believe he did that. Has he apologized yet?" She asked, bringing the conversation back to serious mode again.
"No, he tried to but I didn't want to hear it," I said. "I just can't stand him anymore. He is driving me crazy and I don't know what to do. He won't leave me alone."
"Tell your brothers he's bugging you. That'll get rid of the old bug, don't you think?" Mere suggested.
I nodded, "That would definitely be a good idea but, trust me I've already thought of that. He won't listen to my brothers, he'll find a way to continue talking to me. He won't stop unless he wants to. He told me when we went to the carnival that he wasn't scared of my brothers."
"Hm," Amanda contemplated. "I don't know Ly. Just keep ignoring him like what you're doing already, it's been working for the most part, right?"
I laughed, "Somewhat, I guess."
"On a lighter note, tell us everything about your date with Spencer last night! Was it everything you've dreamed of?" Mere asked, her features lighting up.
My face broke out into a huge smile, "It was even better." I exclaimed.
-
"Ly." Lucas spoke from behind my bedroom door as he softly knocked.
"Come in." I called from my little desk in my room.
"Hey." Lucas said as he walked in.
"Hey, what's up?" I asked.
"Well, today is Aaron's last day before he goes back to college and we're going out for dinner. Let's go." Lucas explained.
"Oh my gosh, I totally forgot he's leaving tomorrow! I've just been so preoccupied it completely slipped my mind." I exclaimed, standing up and slipping on a striped cardigan.
"Relax, Ly. It's all good," He laughed. "Has something been bothering you?" He asked curiously.
"W-what?" I stuttered.
"Has something been bothering you?" He repeated. "It's rare that I see you this upset and distressed."
I ran a hand through my hair, thinking about what's happened with Calvin, deciding whether or not I should tell Lucas.
"No, I'm okay. Just with exams coming up and last minute assigned projects due soon, I guess that's why I've been kinda different." I lie.
He looked over my face for a minute as if to double check before nodding, "Okay, well, if you need any help with your work feel free to ask me."
"Thanks." I smile and he smiles back.
"Anytime," He says. "Now come on downstairs, we're all waiting." He ruffles my hair a bit before leaving my room.
I just roll my eyes and smile as I fix my hair and grab my grey knitted infinity scarf and slip it on.
After doing a quick touch up on my outfit, I make my way down the stairs to see my brothers, dad and- Oh no. Oh heck no.
What is Calvin doing at a family event? Oh this is just great.
His back is faced to me as Aaron walks up to me and smiles, "Took you long enough."
"Yeah, I totally forgot we had dinner planned tonight. Sorry," I say. "Hey, um, just a quick question. I thought this was a family dinner?" I asked, scratching my head awkwardly.
"Of course it is, why?" He asked curiously.
"Well, why is Calvin here then?" I ask.
"Oh, well, he had nothing up tonight and he's our friend so we invited him. Is there something wrong with that?" Aaron asks.
I shake my head, "No, it's fine," I say with a small smile. "After all, this is your night." I smile.
"Are you sure? Has he done anything to upset you Ly? Cause' he can leave." He says sternly, his jaw suddenly clenching in determination.
I shake my head, "No, everything is fine." I smile.
He smiles too, "Okay," He says. "You look very beautiful tonight. I'm gonna miss you so much. Are you sure you're going to be okay without me?" He asks.
"Thanks Ron. I'm gonna miss you too," I say. "Yeah, I do also have Dyl and Lucas to punch out all the guys that bother me while you're away." I laugh.
He cringes at the nickname I call him, "Ron? Please, anything but that nickname." He laughs.
I laugh too, "Hey, I'm entitled to call you that. After all, you're leaving for a five hour flight to Texas in less then twenty-four hours." I say, punching him lightly in the shoulder.
"Fine," He finally agrees with a laugh. "I'm gonna go see if dad is doing okay with getting the car out of the garage so I'll be back."
"Okay." I say as he walks out of the house and into the garage.
"Hey." A voice behind me whispers.
I sigh, knowing perfectly well who the person is that belongs to the voice. "What do you want?"
He's quiet for a second as I turn around and face him. "Are you still upset?" He asks.
"No, Calvin, I'm not. I magically got over it on a good nights sleep." I exclaim sarcastically and roll my eyes.
He sighs, "Be serious Lyla."
"I am being serious Calvin." I retort.
"Look, I'm sorry about dumping the bucket of water on you after your date, it was a harmless joke at first until you got really upset. It wasn't meant to be blown so far out of proportion." He apologized.
Wait a minute. Was the Calvin Porter really apologizing right now? Where is the video camera when you need one?
"Oh, look who's finally owning up to their mistakes." I say.
"What is that supposed to mean, Lyla?" He asks, although I can tell he's getting kind of angry.
"It doesn't matter." I wave him off and begin to walk away from him before he grabs my elbow and pulls me towards him.
"It does matter, to me it does." He says determined, as he gazes down on me.
I almost fall right into him as he pulls me back but I stand my ground. His hand is still wrapped around my elbow. I sigh, "You're always perfect, right Calvin? Your perfect hair, your perfect life, your perfect friends. You have so many people at school to annoy but you still choose me. Why? What have I ever done to you? Why can't you just leave me alone?" I yell.
"You don't get to judge me Lyla. Not when you know nothing about me. Who ever said I have a perfect life? If perfect to you is having your dad walk out on you with another woman when you're five, and having a mother who could barely afford a loaf of bread at the supermarket. Having to go from shelter to shelter after having not been able to pay rent. Yeah, that was my childhood. So perfect, huh?" He yelled back.
I stood there in shock as we breathed heavily, our faces inches apart. His face was glowing with anger and sadness all in one.
I had no idea that that was his childhood, he went through so much crap and I stood there and judged him without even knowing a clue of what went on at his home.
"I-" I stuttered but he shook his head and looked to our left where he saw all my brothers and my dad standing there in shock at what just happened.
My eyes flickered over to them and they widened. Calvin let go of my elbow as he cleared his throat.
"I should probably get going. Thanks for the invitation but, I'll have to pass." Calvin said, as he managed a quick smile before walking out of my house. I stood there shocked at what just happened.
"Ly? You wanna explain?" Lucas asked after a minute, his voice was confused.
"Yeah, why would you lie to me?" Aaron asked, he looked upset- almost betrayed as I faced them all.
My dad stood there with sympathy plastered over his face. "Guys, I-" I said. My heart sunk after Aaron's question. My face turned pale as I realized that I had just ruined the momentum of the night.
"No, it's fine. Let's just go or they will give away our reservation at the restaurant." Aaron said, as he nodded his head once at me and walked out to the car.
Lucas and Dylan walked out as my dad walked up to me. "C'mon kiddo. Let's go." He said, putting his hand on my arm for comfort as I nodded and walked to the car with him.
