Chapter Eight

Barry Allen
Barry stared up at Julian who was lying on top of him, shielding him from flying glass when it should be the other way around. Barry peered over his shoulder and saw that the attacker was Joshua Masters himself again. Barry was sure this was not going to end well. And it certainly wasn't going to end without him getting hurt.

"This was a horrible idea!" Julian hissed as they moved behind a table that had been flipped on its side.

Barry glanced over at him. "Which part? The part where you demanded to come along or the whole thing?"

Julian looked at him as if he were out of his mind. "The whole bloody thing you idiot!"

Barry smirked at him. There's the Julian I know.

Barry glanced around as the sound of bullets hitting the table increased. Barry silently thanked God it was a metal table. He didn't see Stephen or John but he hoped they were doing their part of the plan.

"Barry! Come on out! I may not be able to enter your mind anymore but that doesn't mean I can't sense you!" Masters yelled.

Barry shook his head and muttered under his breath before he said, "What is so important about me?! I'm a completely normal human!"

There was silence before Barry heard a laugh. Right behind him. He spun around and was met by Masters' hand around his throat. Barry was lifted a few inches off the floor so his feet scrabbled uselessly against it as he tried to pry his fingers from his throat. Julian came at Masters from the side and he was flung to the side.

"Julian..." Barry struggled to say.

Master's put his face close to Barry's and smirked. "Human? Oh no Barry you are so much more."

Barry couldn't breathe. He was trying to get air into his lungs but his windpipe was being crushed. Barry saw John over Masters shoulder and he head butted him as hard as he could, making him let go of him. Barry dove to the side as air rushed into his lungs and John and Stephen fired a telekinesis shot that knocked Masters to the floor.

Barry watched on his hands and knees as Stephen and John restrained Masters in cuffs that prevented him from using his powers. Julian had knelt by his side and was rubbing soothing circles on his back. Now that he was able to breathe, Barry slowly climbed to his feet. Masters laughed and said,

"Do you really think that this will stop me?" Masters smirked. "They only stop me from teleporting."

"Not these." Barry told him. "Specifically modified to suppress all of your powers."

Masters stopped laughing and his eyes darkened with anger. "What?!"

John was the one smirking now. "You're going away for a long time Masters. Hope you like jail food."

Barry felt a smile tug at his lips at John's quipp. Masters looked really angry now but the strange thing about it was...he was smiling. Barry frowned at him.

"Looks like my partners came through." Masters said, looking at Barry with a pointed smirk. Barry spun around and saw Magenta standing on the other side of the room. She was surrounded by a purple aura and the things around her were levitating. "This next part might be painful."

That was the last thing Masters said before Magenta sent everything at them, the aura following the objects. Barry was sent flying backwards into a wall by flying tables and chairs. Julian was sent flying through a window that led into another room and John and Stephen managed to block most of it from hitting them. Masters was freed by the force of the wave.

Barry groaned in pain and began crawling for cover. Masters clucked his teeth and strode over to Barry, kicking him over onto his back and pinning him to the floor.

"Let me show you what I do to people who piss me off." Masters told him.

"How about you show me!" Stephen shouted. Barry glanced to the side and saw Stephen posing in a combat stance. Barry took that as his chance and he kicked Masters off of him and flipped to his feet, roundhouse kicking Masters in the face.

"Barry!" Julian shouted.

Barry ducked and turned around, meeting a hammerfist blow with a block. He was surprised that his attacker was none other than Ryan Wilkes, a metahuman mass murderer with the ability to bring your deepest darkest fears to life.

"Been a long time, Barry." Ryan said.

"Not nearly long enough." Barry said as he blocked another hit. Ryan must have escaped the prison and Masters recruited him. Barry dodged to the left, then the right and kicked Wilkes in the chest, sending him backwards.

Ryan grabbed Barry and slammed him against the wall, pinning him there. Barry struggled to get him off but Ryan was stronger than he was and Ryan tried to make eye contact with him. Barry looked away, squeezing his eyes shut, knowing that if he looked in Ryan's eyes it was over.

"Come on Barry, just open your eyes." Ryan said, chuckling darkly. Barry fought the urge to open his eyes but when Julian yelled in pain, his eyes naturally snapped open and he found himself staring deep into Ryan's eyes.

Barry saw himself in his eyes but he also saw his deepest darkest fear. His hidden fear. It was so vivid and so real that if he reached out he'd probably be able to touch him. Barry felt Ryan release him but he barely noticed. He was living his biggest fear.

"No, no, no." He whispered, dropping to his knees. "No this can't be happening. Oh fuck..."

Barry pulled the body into his arms, sobbing his heart out. His deepest darkest fear wasn't losing his family or being unable to save the city...it was losing Julian.

Barry cried over Julian's pale and unmoving body, unable to stop. It was like a dam broke and every loss he'd ever felt or experienced bubbled up to the surface and he couldn't stop. His heart felt like it was breaking--literally.

"I'm so sorry." Barry whispered.

"Barry! Barry come on we gotta go!" John shouted crouching in front of him.

"I can't leave him." Barry looked into his eyes and John flinched away, seeing the pain in his eyes.

"Leave who?"

"Julian. He's..he's dead." Barry croaked in a broken voice.

Someone moved in front of him and knelt in front of him. "Oh man. What did Wilkes do to you?" Stephen wondered.

John grabbed Barry and suddenly he was lying in a bed back at S.T.A.R Labs, curled up on his side in a fetal position. Barry wasn't sure what was going on but he knew he wouldn't let Julian die. The effects of Ryan's power was wearing out and he could finally comprehend things.

Barry made a vow to himself then. He'd never let anything happen to Julian. Ever.
