xix. The killer
Season one, chapter nineteen
"You can't always be strong
But you can always be brave"
"Welcome" The man said with a smile on his face once they entered the house
"Say hi. This is my grandma" Mun said to Thea pointing to the old lady sitting on the couch
"Oh, hello" Thea bowed with a shy smile
"Who is that crazy wench, honey?" Mun's grandmother asked, pointing at the girl as if she were an intruder
"My goodness. Well, would you like anything to eat? How about some fruit?" The eldest hurried to say
"No, it's okay" The brown-haired girl tried to stop him but he was already on his way to the kitchen so Thea couldn't help but laugh nervously
"Let's go to my room" Mun pointed out with a serious tone, as if all this scandal that he caused was nothing to him
"What? My goodness. Where's that girl going?" The old lady asked, looking at the girl with suspicion. Thea bowed, feeling the atmosphere very uncomfortable for her "Honey! Where's that crazy girl going?"
Thea almost cowered in her place as she was being welcomed this way by Mun's grandparents. She had never planned on meeting them and had no intention of doing so, but apparently fate had already written what would happen and only ruined her plans. Anyway there's nothing she can do, the first impression was the most important and Thea had screwed up.
Thea admired Mun's room, she never thought she would be setting foot inside it but this was like a dream come true, it was neither so big nor so small, it was the perfect size and it was just as she imagined it, it was just Mun's style.
The boy on the other hand hurried to grab pieces of clothing that were scattered around the room and then hide them under the sheets of his bed with an embarrassed expression on his face.
"Come in" He said when someone knocked on the door and seconds later his grandfather entered with a tray of fruit and two glasses of juice on his hands
"Here, have some" The man let out a small laugh as Mun rushed to help him with the tray "Mun. Let's leave the door ajar, okay? That's what you do when you have a lady over" The man said, looking askance at the brown-haired girl who gave him a fake smile
"Okay" Mun responded and so his grandfather left the door open at a fair distance. Thea waited for him to move away from the door and then approached to close it completely "What are you doing? Just leave it ajar" Mun stuttered
"We need to close it" Thea proclaimed dryly walking towards the boy's bed
"Okay"
Thea proceeded to sit on the soft bed but got up almost immediately when she heard tapping on the window.
"Yes!" Mun exclaimed with his eyes glued to what was outside the window
"Keep the door ajar" The man exclaimed pointing at both teenagers, they strangely had Mun well checked so Thea couldn't contain the small laugh that left her lips
"Okay, grandpa" Mun responded as Thea shook her head amusingly before walking over to the window and closing the curtains completely to avoid any more distractions
"Is there anything you had with you inside the car that day?" She asked taking a seat on the bed again glancing up at the boy that was standing in front of her "A drawing, maybe?"
"Oh, right" Mun turned around before abruptly stopping to look at her "How much of my memory did you see?" He asked, afraid of what the girl might have found within his memories
"Did you want to hide something?" Thea cocked her head to the side with narrowing eyes in suspicion
"No, not at all" Mun quickly shook his head and then connected his gaze with hers in search of a particular answer, but disappointment invaded him when Thea completely avoided his gaze
"Bring the drawing" She ordered, looking down, Mun sighed before doing what the girl asked "Sit next to me" Thea pointed to the empty space next to her although she stood up almost immediately when the boy sat very close to her "No, not that close" She ordered, putting her feelings aside for the first time, Mun's eyes stayed on her for a few seconds in search of any hint that she was joking but when he didn't find any hint of it he sat surrenderedly a fair distance away from the girl
Thea proceeded to open the sketchbook, she turned to the first page of the drawing she saw in Mun's memories, except it now had small drops of blood splattered all over the page.
"You blocked out the memory because of your guilt. Let it all go. Only then can you see it. Are you ready?" She asked as the boy turned to look at her with insecurity on his face "Ready to see the killer?" Mun nodded with a lump in his throat "I need your hand" He placed his trembling hand on top of the drawing something that the girl had noticed, she carefully placed her soft hand on his. Their eyes made contact for the first time after a long time without doing so and it was like their hearts had been eagerly waiting for this "I'll be right next to you" She assured with a small smile on her lips "One" She began counting closing her eyes"Two" He squeezed her hand and she squeezed his "Three"
And when they opened their eyes they were both inside the car before everything happened.
"Mom, I made a storybook about our family" Said the small version of Mun drawing in his sketchbook that they both recognized very well
"Really? A storybook?" Her mother asked, Thea took the moment to admire the woman in the seat in front of her
"Yes, it's about our family trip" Little Mun responded without taking his eyes off his sketchbook
"Mom" Mun of the present exclaimed with tears in his eyes
"Is that right? Then it must be a story about the three of us" His father exclaimed from the driver's seat, Thea's eyes drifting to Mun's father almost instantly
"No, it's about me, grandpa, and grandma" Little Mun responded "The two of you are always busy. That's why you couldn't join us on this trip" The girl couldn't hold back her tears when she saw Mun looking so fragile and delicate as he looked at his deceased parents with a look of sadness and guilt
"Honey. We can join them, right?" Mun's mother asked her husband
"We sure can!" His father responded with a smile on his face
"You've broken your promise so many times" Mun couldn't help but cry even more as he heard those words come out of his little self's mouth
"Come on, Mun! Draw us in your storybook. Please? We'll join you, for sure. I mean it. Pinky swear. Come on" He extended his pinky finger "My arm's getting tired" And they both intertwined their pinky fingers as Mun of the present brought his trembling hand closer to his father's, although he didn't get the chance to hold his father hand as he rapidly placed his hand back on the steering wheel
"And you mom?"
"Yes sir! I promise you that I'll be there as well" She placed her hand on her forehead in a military salute "Please draw us in your storybook"
"Okay. Then I shall draw you two" Having said that, both of his parents celebrated in happiness
"My sweetheart, thank you so much" Thea turned to glance at Mun who was laughing through his tears
Thea listened as the family began to sing happily, being interrupted by an unknown call that Mun's father received. Although Thea couldn't hear what they were saying very well, the rain was very strong outside the car and it was very difficult for her to concentrate on one thing.
"No. No!" Mun screamed desperately, noticing how a car was approaching theirs at a high speed
Thea squeezed her eyes shut as the car began to spin down the road before finally stopping. The car had been destroyed and it was almost impossible for anyone to have survived that like Mun had.
Now the cold rain wet their bodies and in a matter of seconds they were completely soaked in it.
"No..." Mun whispered, weakly approaching the car before falling to his knees on the wet ground, Thea watched as he began to crawl on the ground until he reached the car "No! Mom! Wake up! Mom!" He was crying uncontrollably and Thea couldn't help but let the tears fall down her cheeks "Mom! Stay with me! Mom! Mom..." He weakly hit the car window in desperation
Thea watched as Mun cried and screamed desperately towards his parents inside the car, there is no greater pain than the loss of your parents. She noticed how the souls of Mun's parents came out of their bodies shining bright blue and remained floating above the car as if they were waiting to be devoured by someone.
She narrowed her eyes as she saw a figure get out of the truck that had crashed into Mun's parents' car. The man was dressed all in black with a hood and a mask over his face, making it almost impossible to see his face. She didn't waste any more time and hurried to approach the boy on the ground who couldn't stop his crying. She kneeled next to him placing a hand on the boy's back.
"He's here" Thea let him know before standing up to stare at the man approaching the car "Don't touch anything. We'll have a problem if you change the flow" Thea warned him
"Oh, my. They're totally whacked" The man said, taking off his mask "Let's see" He checked the vital signs of the people inside the car "Dead. Mission accomplished. No need to double-check. They're dead" He said looking at the car parked in the middle of the road
Thea frowned as someone else got out of the car, he walked towards Mun's parents' car before removing the mask from his face, Thea tilted her head to the side trying to remember where she had seen that face before. Though both teens immediately widened their eyes in terror as both of Mun's parents' souls were consumed by the man.
"My parent's souls..." Mun pointed out gasping in horror "He just swallowed them, didn't he?"
"So the killer is an evil spirit?" Thea asked with her eyes wide open watching as the man's eyes glowed reddish
"Shall I kill the kid in the back seat?" His partner asked when the evil spirit came to check the car
"Don't bother. I don't care" He dryly responded and Thea immediately recognized his voice
"Is that man... no way" She murmured, quickly approaching the man, positioning herself in front of him as he began to walk in the direction of the truck "It's that guy. It's that guy. He killed Cheol-Jung" Thea exclaimed in recognition watching as the man walked past her before stopping his tracks almost as if he had heard what Thea had said "It's him" The brown haired girl said with horror, noticing the way the man turned his head to look at her with a macabre smile on his face, sending shivers down her spine
"You're that bitch" He exclaimed in two voices
"There's no way he can see me" Thea stammered with her mouth slightly open, feeling terror and fury at the same time
"It's you" He assured as the girl began to slowly back away
"Mun, we have to get out of here. He's..." She began to say, stumbling over her own words "This bastard is..."
"I'll remember your face so I can find you and tear you to shreds, bitch" He threatened with a smile on his face, Thea fell to the ground with pure fear written on her face, she began to back away once again as the man approached her in amusement
"You son of a bitch!" Mun exclaimed running towards the man before smashing his fist into the evil spirit's face
"Mun, no!" Thea exclaimed trying to stop him "Mun, don't do that!" But both of them had already started fighting and her words would be in vain
"You must be that kid" He said holding Mun by the neck
"Mun!" Thea got up from the ground ready to help him but when Mun hit the man on the arm they both disappeared. She looked around confusedly in search of the black-haired boy's particular figure but for some strange reason he was nowhere to be found
Mun reappeared without the company of the evil spirit and for a few seconds he lowered his guard without realizing when it appeared behind him seconds later.
On the other hand, Thea began to breathe rapidly, feeling a thousand emotions run through her body as she noticed how they had already started the truck in front of her, she closed her eyes and gasped loudly as if she needed oxygen.
"Mun, you have to come back" She exclaimed looking at the sweaty boy next to her who was breathing rapidly "You have to come back! Darn it" Thea said cursing underneath closing her eyes once more squeezing Mun's hand tightly before waking up inside the memory once more "Darn it. We have to go!" She exclaimed running towards Mun once the truck started moving forward "Come on out!" She wrapped her arms around Mun's waist before removing the boy's hand from the sketchbook
"Let's go back in, Thea. I had him. I can catch him!" Mun exclaimed, looking at her in despair
"He's a level three. You would've died if you fought him" Thea scolded him still holding his hand
"I can risk my life if I can catch him" He said, determined to get back in there
"Lower your voice. Your grandparents. You can 'risk your life'?" She asked narrowing her eyes without really understanding what he meant, she let out a long sigh in exhaustion when Mun let go of her hand in irritation
"He called him Sin, right? I heard the other asshole say, 'Sin' that's what he called him. I'll make them regret... that they let me live" Mun exclaimed with venom in his words
Thea looked at him for a few seconds, understanding very well what he was going through, because if she were to find the people who murdered her family in the same way as him, she would also want to make them pay.
"You suddenly disappeared for a moment. Where were you?" Thea asked curiously, changing the topic
"I disappeared?" He questioned confused, looking at her with both eyebrows raised
"Yes, you disappeared with him" She nodded her head "And you had that wound when you came back" She pointed to his cheek on which he had a small cut "Let me heal that" She said gently taking the boy's face in her hands
"You don't have to..." But Thea ignored him and with one hand on his cheek and the other gently holding his chin she began to heal Mun's small wound. Her hand began to glow purple, she seemed so focused on what she was doing and Mun couldn't help but get lost in the girl's eyes
The way she frowned, the way her long eyelashes looked every time she blinked. He just wanted to tell her how much he wanted her, how much he wanted her to be his girlfriend, how much he wanted to call her his.
"There, no scar left" Thea announced with a smile on her face before backing away from the boy
Mun felt the girl's touch linger on his cheek yearning for more, but he was too cowardly to say it, he was madly in love with her but he was a coward to let her know, how could he?
"Come on, we have to let the rest of the team know about this" Thea exclaimed, getting up from the bed without noticing the boy who was looking at her with lovesick eyes "They'll know what to do. Mun?" She asked moving a hand in front of the boy's face finally getting him out of his trance
"Thea, I'm sorry for treating you in such a horrible way when you only wanted to help me..." He apologized quietly, feeling like a bad friend for treating her that way when he clearly knew that she wasn't to blame for anything "And I also want to thank you for helping me discover who murdered my parents" He raised his head, connecting gazes with her
"Okay, apology accepted. How can I stay angry with a face like yours anyway?" Thea admitted with a playful smile before she began walking quickly towards the bedroom door
"Hey, what do you mean by that? Hey! Thea! Wait for me!" Mun exclaimed with a small smile forming on his lips as he ran after her
