Twin Flames

Hello! I have yet another Kamjay one-shot for you all. I have written maybe too many of these recently, but I can't help it. I just love these two so much. This fic is not fantasy themed and an idea of my own. So definitely different from my last two stories about this fic. This one is focused on soulmates, which if you don't already know is a favorite trope of mine. It is also set in sort of the real world, which I don't often write about, but felt that it was really fitting for a soulmate OS. With that said, let's get into the story!

Jay groans softly as he uses his arm to shield his eyes. The LED lights used in the interview he had just conducted have yet to be taken down, making his headache ten times worse. He shifts around on the old leathery couch that he is sprawled out on. No matter how much he moves though, he is unable to get comfortable or alleviate this cold clenching feeling that grips at his chest. "Are you alright, Jay?" Jongwoo asks from where he stands near the snack table munching on some pretzels.

"No," Jay responds simply. He turns around one more time before falling completely still. Even like this, his head still feels heavy and his heart whines in pain. "You really should see a doctor," Jongwoo says.

"I have," Jay huffs, "Multiple. None of them know what's wrong with me." Jongwoo's lips curl into a frown as he looks at his friend. He doesn't say anything for a moment before turning to look at the staff and asking them quietly to turn off the LED lights. They are quick to heed his request and as soon as the lights shut off, Jay lets out a small sigh of relief. He slowly removes his arm away from his face, but keeps his eyes shut. "It feels like the pain after meeting your soulmate," Jongwoo questions, "Right?"

Jay slowly nods his head. He had trouble explaining what it was he was feeling. It wasn't like anything he has ever gone through before. When he was asked, he likened it to the aches of being apart from your soulmate for the first time. It is a feeling that most people know. Either from experience or from the stories told time and time again. The idea of soulmates is romantic. It's dreamy and fairy tale-like. Reality makes the soulmate concept hard. There is no way to identify who your soulmate is when you first meet them. Many go about their day walking right by their fated half without even knowing. It isn't until twelve hours afterwards do they realize that they have met. When the physical pain wracks their entire body and keeps them up all night. An empty feeling in your chest and a dizzying spell that flits around in your head. It doesn't stop until you reconvene with your soulmate and acknowledge the other as such.

None of that really applied to Jay though because what he feels isn't the exact same. This pain he is going through is different. It's stronger. It burns in a way.

"You and Kamden have already acknowledged each other as soulmates, haven't you?" Jongwoo asks.

It doesn't apply to Jay because he's already found his soulmate.

"Of course," Jay says, not able to stop a soft smile from coming onto his face as he thinks of his soulmate. Even with the pain he is going through, the thought of Kamden just makes him happy. "Do you think something could be wrong with your connection?" Jongwoo questions.

"Doubt it," Jay says, "That sort of thing isn't common and usually only happens to soulmates who don't like...sync up...Kam and I aren't like that. We still talk all the time even though we're apart..." Those words make his heart ache again. He hasn't seen his soulmate in person in months. Their constant texts and late night video calls did little to soothe the lack of Kamden's presence. He wishes that they were together. He wishes that Kamden were here now. He knows that he shouldn't complain. He's lucky to have even met his soulmate and realize that they are one another's fated half in the first place.

He remembers the day that they had acknowledged each other as soulmates. It was hard not to. It was only a few days after the end of Boys Planet. Jay was trying to relax after all the hard work and emotions he had gone through the past few months. Imagine his surprise when his break was interrupted by sharp pains in his chest and a crushing headache. At first, he panicked. There were many people that he had spent twelve hours apart from. The fact that he was around so many other trainees through the audition program solidified that. He slowly calmed down though as he began to remember the other Boys Planet trainees who had found their other halves rather easily. He was sure that it would be the same for him. He had reached for his phone and called the first number he could think of. The one person that he hoped and prayed would be his soulmate. Na Kamden. He knew that he had no control over this sort of thing, but he couldn't stop himself from praying and hoping that his friend was his fated half. When Kamden answered the phone, a bunch of nonsense spilled from his lips, but somehow his friend had understood every word. He said his name in a shaky tone filled with relief and care. He kept saying his name again and again as Jay sank to the floor in shock. The way Kamden said his name was in a way that no other has ever said before. The sound of it always sent shivers down his spine and warmed his chest. He loved it. His name rolling off his soulmate's lips.

"Jay..."

He could hear Kamden's voice now. Gosh, he misses him.

"Jay?" He hears Kamden say his name again.

"Hello?" Kamden says in a questioning tone. At that word, Jay's eyes widen. He slowly begins to realize that he has a phone pressed against his ear. The voice of his boyfriend coming from a call and not just his own imagination. "Kamden?" Jay says in a hesitant tone.

"Hi," Kamden says softly.

Jay's entire body relaxes without him even meaning to. His eyes flit up to meet Jongwoo who flashes him a small smile and a thumbs up. He mouths thank you before focusing his full attention on speaking to his soulmate. "What are you doing?" Jay questions with a soft smile on his face.

"Nothing much," Kamden replies, "I just finished with a vocal lesson..."

"Oooo, Na Doobin is singing!" Jay hums, "Does this mean you're going to do that duet with me?"

"We'll see..." Kamden murmurs.

"That isn't a no!" Jay says excitedly.

"It isn't a yes either," Kamden deadpans. Jay giggles, imagining the flustered expression on his soulmate's face. "Come on, Kam," Jay pleads, "Our fans want to see us perform together."

"Can't we just do Rush Hour again?" Kamden questions.

"Yes, but we should also do another song," Jay says, "A new one! You did say you wanted to perform on stage with me again." His mind instantly thinks back to all those times he's gotten to sing and dance beside Kamden. The thrill and rush of adrenaline that filled his entire body. He's always loved performing, but doing it alongside your soulmate made it so much more special. "We will," Kamden states, "One day..." The image in his mind crumples. He's lucky. He knows it. He's been able to perform with Kamden more often than expected, especially with them being in different companies and having busy schedules. He can't help himself though from wanting more. For imagining what could have been if they both had made it. If they could achieve their dreams together rather than apart. That thought is enough to remind Jay of the pain coursing through his body. He bites his lip as his heart feels as if it is being smashed into minced meat. His hand moves to his chest as he forces himself not to make a noise. He doesn't want Kamden to know that he's in pain. He doesn't want to worry his soulmate. His silence seems to be concerning enough though. "Hey, are you okay?" Kamden questions in an anxious tone.

"Yeah, I just miss you a lot," Jay is able to force out. His voice is just slightly strained, but not enough for Kamden to notice. "I miss you too," Kamden says softly, "When you get back, I want to take you out..."

"Yeah?" Jay questions, the pain subsiding a little as he hears his soulmate's sweet words. Kamden hums in affirmation before launching into an explanation of the date he has planned out. "We can go to the park and have a little picnic...then walk around the town fair," He explains, "We'll end the night with a candlelit dinner and then we can watch a movie at my place until we fall asleep."

"That sounds really nice," Jay says, a smile reappearing on his face even as a wave of vertigo passes over him, "I gotta go...we'll talk later, okay?"

"Alright," Kamden says, "Love you..."

"Love you too," Jay states. He ends the call before sticking the phone out to Jongwoo. As soon as his friend takes the device back, Jay curls back into a ball as the pain returns full force. He hadn't really noticed until now that being on the call with Kamden had helped a lot with his current ailments. It didn't cure him entirely, but it was definitely bearable when he heard his soulmate's voice. He couldn't depend on Kamden in this situation though. He was busy after all and they couldn't talk to one another twenty four seven. Not to mention, he didn't want Kamden to find out about his illness. He's sure that it will go away eventually. Even though he has been suffering for a few months now. Jay just has to find a way to deal with it.

———————

A couple of days later, Jay and Jongwoo are on a plane heading back to Korea. Jay's head leans against the wall of the plane, murmuring to himself in an attempt to distract himself. Jongwoo's eyes are filled with concern as he watches his friend. He reaches a hand out and places it on Jay's shoulder. Jay turns at the touch and flashes Jongwoo a small smile. This only serves to make Jongwoo even more worried. "It still hurts?" Jongwoo asks. Jay's smile crumples, not even bothering to hide his pain from his friend when he can easily see through his resolve. He adjusts his position in his seat before answering, "The pressure of the airplane doesn't help."

"Did you take any pain meds?" Jongwoo questions.

"They don't help with the headache or chest pains," Jay sighs. Jongwoo slowly nods as he moves his hand away. His lips curl into a scowl when he finds that there isn't much he can do for him. "I can't call Kamden this time," Jongwoo says, "Just try your best to relax. Think of your soulmate. Maybe take a nap...."

"Hm..." Jay says as he leans his head back into the chair, trying to heed his friend's advice. His eyes fall shut for less than a second before shooting open as his entire body ignites with pain. He does his best to stay still and stomach it, not wanting to worry Jongwoo any more. His chest burns. It's like someone is prodding at his heart with a burning metal rod. His head feels cloudy as if he has breathed in too much smoke. This feeling persists for what feels like an eternity. It isn't until an unfamiliar voice calls out to him is he distracted just enough that the pain lessons by a fraction. "Hello, I'm sorry, but I couldn't help overhearing that you were experiencing some pain. I think I may know what is wrong," A middle aged woman with gray in her hair says. Jay and Jongwoo turn to look at her with matching surprised expressions. They don't say anything, waiting for the lady to further explain her hypothesis on Jay's illness. "It feels like it did when you were first separated from your soulmate, yes? Just stronger and more potent?" The woman questions, "And you already know who your soulmate is, correct?" Jay nods affirmatively to every question that she asks. The fact that she is asking these questions in particular fills him with hope. Maybe, she truly does know what is wrong with him.

"Do you know what twin flames are?" The woman asks.

Jay stiffens slightly at the question. Of course, he knows what they are. They are almost as notorious as soulmates are, but not in the same way. Twin flames and soulmates are similar in a way. They are both related to the connection of human souls after all. Beyond that though, they couldn't be any more different. Soulmates are two individual souls who find a connection with one another. Twin flames, on the other hand, are two halves of the exact same soul. They are much rarer than soulmates and considered ten times more dangerous. They are called twin flames for a reason. They are considered overly passionate and will cause more harm to the halves of the soul than good. They say that your soulmate will make you feel whole, but your twin flame will burn you. It is for that reason that there are rarely, if any, twin flames who end up together. Most people are too afraid to deal with the troubles and adversity that is rumored to occur between them. Most are happy with just finding their soulmate and nothing more.

"What do they have to do with what I'm feeling?" Jay questions, his voice cracking slightly.

"I believe that your supposed soulmate is actually your twin flame," The woman states. Jay's body tenses up. For the first time, the pain he has felt for weeks feels like nothing compared to the emotional turmoil that fills his stomach. Kamden and him and soulmates. Not twin flames. They can't be. It's crazy. Too outlandish to be true. "How do you...how do you know?" Jay stutters, staring at the woman with wide eyes.

"Not many people know this, twin flames aren't common after all...but the process of identifying your other half is a bit different than the way of acknowledging your soulmate," The woman explains, "When twin flames find one another, they are expected to remain by each other's sides for another twelve hours. This way you reassure your ever passionate souls that they have found their other half and they won't be ripped away from them again. If you don't do this, your soul will never relax and will constantly create turmoil inside of you expressing its own fury of being away from their twin..."

Jay clenches onto the armrests of his seat. His eyes dart back and forth as he processes this information. He can't deny it. Everything that this woman has told him aligns perfectly with his case. That means that Kamden and him are twin flames. Not soulmates. This could change everything. He could lose Kamden. His relationship could burn. Nothing is going to be the same. "Thank you, ma'am," Jongwoo states, "For sharing that information..." Jay blinks a couple of times, realizing that he had completely fallen silent. He stiffly bows his head towards the woman before tucking his head against his chest and letting out a shaky breath. His grip on the armrests tightens. His skin turns white from the pressure. He feels Jongwoo places his hand on top of his own, but doesn't look up to meet his friend's eyes. "Jay..." Jongwoo says, "It's going to be okay..."

"Will it be?" Jay says in a breathy voice, "Twin flames...Kam and I are..."

"You will be fine," Jongwoo states, "I know the two of you. Something like this isn't going to change anything. You'll see..." Jay presses his lips together into a firm line and shakes his head. He wants to have hope. To believe that Kamden and him will make it through this together, but his fears have seized his entire being. The million what ifs fill his head. He's scared. Even though he tries not to be. "When we land, give Kamden a call, okay?" Jongwoo says quietly, "Just do that and take it from there..." Jay considers those words for a moment before slowly nodding his head. He lets out a breath before slowly sitting up straight. He still holds onto the armrests to steady himself, but appears slightly calmer than before. He can't get ahead of himself. Nothing has happened yet. There's still a chance that things will be okay. It isn't over until it's over.

———————

As soon as he steps into his home, Jay calls Kamden. He paces back and forth in his room as the dial tone echoes loudly. "Come on..." Jay whispers, "Pick up...please..." Thankfully, he doesn't have to wait long. A click over the line lets Jay know that his soulmate...his twin flame has answered his call. "Kamden!" Jay exclaims loudly.

"Jay..." Kamden murmurs in a somewhat sleepy tone, "What...what's going on?"

"I just got back-" Jay starts.

"Jay... I love you, but can we talk later," Kamden cuts him off, "I just...I just woke up and I'm really tired...I haven't been feeling well lately-"

"Is it your head?" Jay cuts his other half off this time around, "And your chest too?"

"Huh?" Kamden says in a confused manner.

"You're in pain too, right?" Jay asks, his voice shaking, "It feels like your head is being hit by a battering ram and someone is setting your heart on fire..."

"How do you..." Kamden mutters.

"I feel it too, Kam," Jay says, "I've been feeling the same thing as you for months now." He finds himself gravitating towards his bed. His legs feel shaky and unstable as he speaks to Kamden. "But we...we know that we're soulmates," Kamden murmurs.

"This pain isn't because of us being soulmates," Jay states, "It's because we're twin flames." He begins to explain his encounter with the woman on the plane. The things that she told him. The truth behind their connection. After he finishes speaking, the line falls silent for a moment. Jay doesn't push his other half, knowing how shocking this all must be. He imagines Kamden is reacting similarly to how he was. "I don't know what to say..." Kamden says in a stiff tone.

"I know. It's a lot. It means a lot," Jay sighs, "Listen...Kam...take all the time you need to figure this out. I've already had a while now to think this through and well...I don't want to influence your decision, but I want you to know that I don't want this to change anything." Jay expects for the call to become quiet again. He thinks that Kamden may even hang up and suggest they talk about this later. He fears that his other half may shut him out for good.

What actually happened though...nothing could have prepared him for that.

"It won't. All of this is...insane, but it's going to be okay," Kamden says, "We'll figure this out. It doesn't matter what we are...soulmates...twin flames...it doesn't change the fact that you mean everything to me." Jay's eyes widen as he feels his heart twinge in his chest. Butterflies fill his stomach and his cheeks warm. Hope fills his veins and his shoulders relax. Things are going to be okay. Kamden isn't pushing him away. Kamden wants to work things out. Kamden still cares for him even though he is his twin flame and not his soulmate. "Kam..." Jay breathes, "Hell, I want to hug you so bad right now..."

"Me too," Kamden smiles, "But, I have a jam packed schedule for the rest of today..."

"Same," Jay pouts before his eyes widen, "I'm free tomorrow though!"

"Hm, then tomorrow, come over as soon as you can," Kamden nods, "We'll reassure our souls and spend the day together."

"Okay," Jay says, "I'll see you then."

"Bye, Jay..." Kamden hums. Jay pulls his phone from his ear and ends the call. He lets out a breath as he lowers into his bed. He stares up at his ceiling with an anxious expression on his face. "One more night..." Jay whispers to himself, "I can deal with one more night..."

———————

"Are you sure you don't want to go anywhere?" Kamden asks.

"No," Jay hums as he snuggles closer to his twin flame, "I'm fine right where I am..." It's the next day. The two are within Kamden's home. They are both sprawled out on the deep blue couch. Kamden sits partially upright. His back is slightly curled against the corner of the couch while his legs are stretched outwards. His arm wraps around Jay's shoulders, who lays completely on the couch. His head rests in the soft cushions and the firm build of Kamden's chest. One of his hands fiddles with the strings of Kamden's sweatshirt. His legs wrap around his twin flame's in an attempt to steal some heat. It has been months since the two have gotten to see each other face to face. And while there is no rule about physical contact needed to calm their souls, they have made their own personal one to spend these twelve hours side by side.

"We can go out tomorrow," Jay suggests, "We promised Matthew we would go to the fancon."

"Hm..." Kamden nods, "Do you think we'll be up for it?"

"Yeah, the pain is already going away after just a few hours together," Jay muses. He drops the strings of Kamden's sweatshirt and twists his arm up to trace his jaw. Kamden relishes at the touch before moving his head a bit to place a feather light kiss on Jay's palm. He then reaches his own hand to grab his twin flames in a soft but firm hold. Their fingers intertwine perfectly and rest lightly against their sides. "I know we're doing this for our souls and stuff, but I'm glad that we get to spend this much time together," Kamden comments.

"It is nice," Jay smiles, "I'm getting my fill of Na Kamden after a long time..."

"You better not get sick of me," Kamden states.

"Never," Jay nudges the other slightly. Kamden grins as he gently pushes him back. This continues with each of them bumping against one another over and over. Their slight pokes build into overdramatic shoves that lead to them both tumbling off the couch and onto the floor. Laughter immediately fills the air. Their faces turn red as they roll around and clutch at their stomachs. Even though their fall separated them, it's only a matter of time before they close the distance between them. They lay on their sides this time with their arms propping their heads up. They aren't as close as before, but they may as well be with the way their eyes are intensely locked on one another. Jay's lips curl into a soft smile. His hair is messy and flops slightly over his eyes. Kamden chuckles as he reaches his arm out and tucks the strand to the side. His hand then lowers to brush against Jay's cheek lovingly. They don't speak for a while. Just enjoying being in one another's presence.

"Kam..." Jay finally breaks the silence.

"Yeah?" Kamden questions.

"I know you said we would be okay...but do you really think that we will be?" Jay murmurs, "Twin flames...they can have messy relationships..." Kamden presses his lips together into a firm line. He turns a bit before flopping to lie on his back. Jay is quick to mirror his position and scoot himself closer to his other half. Their sides press flush against one another like sardines in a can. Their hands find each other easily. Their fingers latch onto one another and hold tightly. "I can't say anything for certain," Kamden lets out a breath as he turns his head to look at Jay, "We never know what's going to happen tomorrow, but I honestly don't care. It doesn't change the fact that I am going to try my hardest to stay by your side. Even if things turn crazy, I won't let you go that easily..."

"I'm going to try really hard to do so too," Jay says, his face serious as he meets his twin flame's gaze, "I don't want to lose you, Kamden."

"You won't," Kamden states, squeezing Jay's hand, "We'll hold on. We've been through so much already. You and I...our lives together and apart have always been difficult. But, we've made it work...haven't we? We can do the same now." Jay nods his head. A soft smile easily appears on his face. Kamden matches the expression and mouths, I love you. The words make Jay's grin grow wider as he leans closer to Kamden. His twin flame is quick to pick up on his actions as he meets him in the middle. Their lips lightly pressing against one another. Soft and gentle. So filled with love that makes their cheeks turn red even though their kiss lasts for only a few seconds. After they pull away, their faces remain close. Their breaths tickling each others skin and their eyes shining brightly with adoration. "We told our fans that we would protect our friendship until we die," Jay hums, "That means that we will fight for our relationship until the very end."

And that's the end. This story idea came to me after waking up to news of Kamjay at the ZB1 Fancon. It was just so amazing and I was inspired to write something for Kamjay. I've been trying to write a twin flames story for a while too, they are a relationship that is stronger and different than soulmates, so definitely could contain loads of angst. And we all know by now that I am an angst lover. I just love the idea of Kamjay being two parts of the same soul. It's also a testament to the struggles and hardships that they go through but still manage to face like the absolute Kings they are. I think after this one-shot, I won't be posting any Kamjay for a bit (this may be a lie...we'll see). Thank you to all the Kamjay fans who have been checking out my other fics. You are all so amazing and I appreciate you. If you haven't already, please check out my previous two one-shots of Kamjay. Please also vote, comment, follow me, and add this story to your library! I hope you have a wonderful rest of your day! Bye!

P.S. My desire to have Jay, Jongwoo and Kamden in a project group is so freaking strong. I need it and I will sob if it does or doesn't happen.
