Things to Look Forward to

Hyunjin sits on a stool and presses his face to the cool glass of the window. It's winter time in Seoul, but it looks more like a nice spring day. It's a tad bit windy and the temperature is fairly low, but the sun still shines high in the sky. Hyunjin is in the dorms just relaxing. Cause he can. It's not something he often gets the chance to do, but he's more than happy for this free time. The other members' schedules are also free, but they've chosen to go out with their time off. Some went back to the studio to work on new songs, cough, Chan. Others went to the arcade or to get some snacks or to walk around the park. Hyunjin could've went with them, but he just didn't feel like it. He just wanted to stay at home, so that's where he is. He's at home. Instead of taking a nap or watching TV, he's sitting on a cold hard stool staring out the window. It's completely quiet in the dorms, leaving Hyunjin to his own thoughts. His mind tends to wander when he's alone. Sometimes to things that aren't so positive. But, not today. Today he's thinking about his life. He's thinking about where he is now. What he is now. And how he's gotten here. It's crazy. Unbelievable. How could someone like him even end up somewhere like here. He got lucky. He's at a place that he never expected to be. He's at a place where he's living out his dreams. Not many can say something like that. A small smile appears on Hyunjin's face as he thinks about his life. His past. He thinks about himself. When he was younger. When he was still in America. He remembers the day they left. The day his parents came to pick him up from his last day of school in America. The day that he went on the airplane to South Korea. He remembers crying. Bawling his eyes out. He was so scared back then. So worried. He shakes his head, thinking about how silly he had been. 6 year old Hyunjin had nothing to worry about than. Nothing at all.

"Why do we have to go, Eomma!?" 6 year old Hyunjin cries, "I don't want to go!!!" Large tears drip down Hyunjin's face in constant streams. His cheeks are flushed and his arms hang limp at his sides. His mouth is set in a watery pout. "Oh, Jinnie. Don't cry. You'll love it in South Korea," His mother soothes him. She bends down so she's at the same height as her son. She brushes his hair out of his fair and cups his cheeks with care. "I don't want to go to South Korea! I want to stay here. I want to stay with my friends. It will be weird if I go to South Korea," Hyunjin states, "No one will like me! They'll call me names!"

"Who could not like you? You're amazing, Hyunjin. No one will be mean to you in Korea..." His mom says, gently rubbing away one of the tears that came from her son's eyes. Hyunjin shakes his head and crosses his arms. "What's so special about Korea? I don't need to go there. I can stay right here and be okay," Hyunjin huffs.

"There's a lot of special things about Korea. You'll see it all when we go there. I'll show you some of the places I used to hang out at when I was a kid. You'll get to try some really good food. You'll make new friends and you'll do a bunch of cool things," His mom replies.

Hyunjin lets out another loud sob, "I can do cool things here! There's nothing in Korea. I don't wanna go!!!!! Don't make me go!!!!!!" Hyunjin's mother sighs and combs her fingers through his son's hair. She pulls him close to her and rubs his back, trying to calm him down. Hyunjin continues to speak, his voice sort of muffled as he does so pressed to his mom's chest. "I-I w-won't get t-to d-do w-what I w-want in Korea! I-I w-won't b-be h-happy! I-it's a w-weird place. I-I d-don't know a-anyone. N-no o-one w-will be my f-friend! I w-will b-be a-all a-alone. F-f-forever!!!! A-and e-ver! W-what d-do I d-do t-then? D-don't m-make m-me g-go, Eomma. P-please! I c-can s-stay h-here! I can stay with J-Jack! Jack said I can s-stay with him! Let me stay with him!"

"Shhhhhh, Hyunjinnie....you can't stay with Jack. You have to come with appa and me. Right? You don't want appa and eomma to leave you all alone right..." His mom whispers in a comforting tone.

Hyunjin sniffles, "N-no...but I don't want to go to Korea! It's big and it's scary! I don't know the people there and they don't know me. What if I get lost? You won't find me cause it's in Korea and you don't know Korea. Korea is too big and if I get lost I will be lost forever! And than I'll be all alone! I'll be alone! I don't want to be alone.... Korea is scary eomma....it's really scary."

"It's not scary, Hyunjin. Your just worried. You have no need to be scared," His mom murmurs, "Eomma and appa will always find you no matter where you are. Even in Korea. You'll see.... we'll go to Korea and it won't be scary at all."

"B-but, what if it is?" Hyunjin asks quietly.

"Than, we'll be brave," His mom answers, "And it won't be scary anymore..."

"I still don't want to go..." Hyunjin mutters, "Who am I in Korea? What do I do?"

"You do the same thing you did here in America. You play. You be a kid. You go to school. You ride your bike and you play with your toys," His mom answers, "You're still you no matter where you live. That doesn't change."

"I don't like that word...change..." Hyunjin pouts, "It sounds scary..."

"It's not scary, Hyunjin. Change is a beautiful thing. It brings you beautiful opportunities. That's what you'll be getting in South Korea. There's so much things you'll be able to do. You'll see," His mom says.

"What about when I'm big? Miss Fitzgerald talked about what we want to be when I grow up. And how when you're big you do lots of fun things. Will I do fun things in Korea?" Hyunjin asks.

"I'm sure you'll do the funnest things in Korea, Hyunjin," His mom says with a small smile, "You don't have to worry. It will be the best. Your going to be happy when we go to Korea. Maybe, you don't see that now. But, you will. You'll see. Korea will be loads of fun. You're going to love your life there. Cause Korea is a whole other world. And you're going to make that world yours."

--------

Hyunjin chuckles a little, he was a bit overdramatic. Even back than as a child. His mom was right. He was happy in Korea. He is happy in Korea. He's so thankful to have came here. Cause here is where his dreams have come true. Here is where he made friends, even though back than he was dead set on the fact he would be forever alone. He made a family with nine other boys, yes nine. Always nine. He reached his dreams. He debuted with his friends and they're doing well. He has fans who cheer him on. He has parents who supports him. He is living in Korea and it's not scary at all. There's nothing for him to be afraid of. Cause this is his world now. It's a world that he can be proud of. Cause he's done great things. And he's only just getting started. Hyunjin is so wrapped up in his thoughts that he doesn't notice that the rest of his members have entered the dorm. They stand in front of him with confused looks on their faces. They can't seem to understand what is going on with Hyunjin. "Is he okay?" Jeongin questions.

Minho nods, "He's fine...just being weird..."

"Yeah..." Changbin mutters in agreement.

"Hyunjin," Seungmin calls out. The dancer doesn't answer, still to wrapped up in his thoughts. "Hellooooo.... Hyunjin?" Felix says louder.

"Hyunjin!" Chan exclaims. The one in question still doesn't answer. Jisung sighs and goes to the living room, he returns a second later with a pillow in his hand. He aims and chucks it at Hyunjin's head. The young man sputters in shock, whipping his face off the window and towards the members. His eyes widen and he blinks a couple of times in shock over a pillow being thrown at him. "Yah, Hwang Hyunjin," Jisung says, "What's wrong with you?"

"Why'd you throw a pillow at me?" Hyunjin asks.

Jisung shrugs, "You weren't answering....are you okay?"

"Yeah, I'm fine...just a bit wrapped up in my thoughts," Hyunjin replies, "Nothing major...just thinking about when I was a child..."

"Hm, okay than, well we brought home food for lunch," Chan says, holding up a bag of food, "You hungry?"

"Always," Hyunjin replies. With that said, the boys hurry into action. Setting up the table for them all to eat. Soon enough, they're all sitting and shoving food down their mouths. Hyunjin eats at a normal pace, taking the time to look around at the other members. Felix and Jisung are playing hockey with a straw wrapper while Jeongin gives a play by play, like some sort of announcer. Changbin is looking over at Seungmin's shoulder to get a peek of some photos the younger took. Minho and Chan are discussing something with smiles across both of their faces. Hyunjin feels his heart warm, feeling comfortable and at home surrounded by the others. The boys continue to eat and when they're close to finishing, Chan gets all of their attention. It takes a couple of minutes but they get quiet. "So guys, I spoke with JYP and he says he's giving us the rest of the month off," Chan announces.

"Really?!" They all shout at once before fading into chaos. The boys all talk over one another excitedly. Hyunjin laughs and a smile blossoms onto his face. This is his family. This is his life. He's so lucky. Six year old Hyunjin had no idea that when he comes to Korea, he has this to look forward to. He had no idea how much he has to look forward to. You have a lot of things to look forward to, little Hyunjin. A whole lot of things.
