The Bookstore
This one-shot is based off of a prompt. It's a picture of a bookstore, so please enjoy it. This one-shot was for a weekly AU challenge on ARA. Please enjoy it.
Jin stares at the building in front of him that is currently under construction. It was slightly windy and there are orange leaves on the floor. A young woman walks down the sidewalk and stops when she spots Jin. His attention is on the daycare being built. The woman looks at him with concern, "Um...are you alright?"
Jin glances at her, his eyes widened, "Oh, yeah...I'm fine. Just reminiscing." The woman nods her head, looking at the building as well. She frowns, a tad bit confused at what Jin is thinking about. "Not to be rude or anything, but what are you reminiscing about? It seems like another old building to me," she says.
Jin smiles, "It's not just some old building. It's being turned into a daycare center, as you can see. Before it was a daycare center, it was a bookstore."
The woman's eyebrows' furrow, "I'm guessing this bookstore was important to you."
"Yeah, it was where I met my sort of friends..." Jin replies.
"Huh, sort of friends? What do you mean by that?" She asks.
Jin shrugs, "It's kind of a long story. I don't want to waste your time."
"I don't have anywhere to be. I'm willing to listen, that is if you're willing to tell," she says.
"Alright, well it was around two years ago. There was this little bookstore called Journey of the Pages," Jin explains, "It wasn't a big store. It was fairly small and didn't get a whole lot of customers. People did come, but not loads. Enough came for the store to remain open."
"I don't understand how this has anything to do with you. Did you own the store?" She asks.
Jin shakes his head, "No, I wasn't the owner. And you'll find out if you let me continue." The woman closes her mouth and waits for him to continue. "Alright. Well, I used to go to this bookstore. I don't know exactly why I started going, but once I started I never stopped. The place was nice. It was warm and welcoming. There were a bunch of books, new and old. Plus, there were other people that would go to the same bookstore. There was this group of us that would be at the bookstore at the same time and day, every single week."
"Wait, really?" She asks in a shocked tone.
Jin nods, "Every Saturday at 1 pm. We would all be at the bookstore. There were seven of us. We never really spoke to one another. I didn't know any of their names for the longest time. But, we would always see each other. I came to sort of learn their quirks and little things about their personalities."
"But, you never talked? You didn't learn their names? You saw one another so often and you never actually had a conversation. Who were they? You didn't really know them, though, did you?" She questions.
Jin shrugs, "I don't know why we never spoke with one another. It seems so odd now that I think about it. We were pretty weird to just not even mutter a good afternoon or a hello. That doesn't really matter, I did know them. Just in a different way. Let me tell you about each of the guys. The first one is the owner of the shop. He's a young man, who really loved books. He would always have a book with him. He's always writing something down or flipping through a book. There was the bookstore owner's little brother. They were the only two that really talked. They are siblings after all. The brother would always come into the store with a smile on his face and start talking to his hyung. He would always have a book or something to read in his hand. He would hand it to the shop owner and they would read it together. Sometimes it was a magazine, other times it was a nutrition label."
"That's kinda weird," she says.
"I thought so too, at the beginning. I started to get used to it after a month. There was also these two young men who looked to be about the same age. One of them was taller than the other. The smaller one would always come into the bookstore and go to the same bookshelf. He would take the same book every week and read it. He sat down and just read. Every single week he did the same thing, the same book. He wouldn't even pick up another book, it would always be that one. The other guy was the total opposite. He would look for a new book to read as often as he could. He would go to a shelf and pick out a random book. He would read only a few pages before he puts the book back and goes to look for another. There were times where he found a book that he liked so much that he continued to read it a bit longer than normal. Most of the time he would just read little parts of books," Jin tells her.
She nods her head, "They seem like interesting people..."
"Yeah. They were. There was also this sunshiny man that came in. He would always close his eyes and walk down a random aisle. He would choose a book with his eyes still shut and that's what he would read for the day. The last guy was pretty interesting too. He would walk in with earbuds all the time. He would look around the store for five minutes before settling on a book to read. He would lean against one of the shelves and takes off on side of the earbuds. He would then start reading the book, but from the end. He would start at the end of the book and just read," Jin continues to speak.
The woman smiles, "What about you? Did you have a thing that you did when you were in the bookstore?"
Jin chuckles, "Actually, I did. I used to wander around the store searching for a book. I would do this for about thirty minutes before I actually found a book I wanted to read."
"Huh, you all sound like....um....cool... people...." The woman mutters.
Jin smiles, "We were a tad bit different. I won't deny that."
She nods, "How is it that you never spoke to one another? You were in the same place every single day and time. There had to be one time where you had a conversation."
Jin sighs, "Well, we never talked to one another for the longest time. Then, one week there was a notice on the door saying that the bookstore would be closing down. The owner couldn't pay for the rent and made the decision to close. The next week was the last day the bookstore would be open. When we all entered, we didn't act like anything was different. We tried to ignore the fact that the store would be closing by the end of the day. None of spoke to one another, like normal. That is until the younger brother spoke up. He couldn't stand not knowing the names of the other people that came to the store every Saturday. That's the first and last time we ever talked."
"So, you learned their names? What do you mean first and last? Didn't you keep in touch?" She asks.
"Yeah, I learned their names. We were friends, but not really. We knew things about each other, but not who their parents are or what school they went to. We were not really strangers either. We knew things about one another, but they were little things. The bookstore owner, his name was Namjoon. I found out that he is an aspiring writer, that's why he's always writing in his notebook. His younger brother's name was Jungkook, he was currently a student at college. The man who always read the same book was called Jimin. The one who would always pick up a new book, his name was Taehyung. Hoseok was the one who would choose a new book by random. And Yoongi, he was the one with earbuds in whenever he entered the store," Jin explains.
The woman nods, "I don't understand how you didn't remain friends, though. You seemed, not close, but friendly with one another."
"We were friendly with one another. But, we never really talked to one another. We knew things about one another based off of our actions. I know that Jimin was insecure because of the way he sat when he read his book. I know that Yoongi was very relaxed and unbothered by what others thought of him. Taehyung had a carefree nature and he did whatever his heart wanted. Namjoon was so smart. I could see it as he thought about what to write in his notebook or when I overheard him explaining something to Jungkook. I know how much his hyung means to Jungkook. His eyes would light up and his full attention would be on Namjoon whenever he would explain something. Hoseok wasn't afraid to show his emotions. He never bottled them up, even in front of a group of strangers. He would always scream in fright or laugh out loud when something major happened in the book he was reading. They weren't my best friends. We never stayed in touch," Jin states.
"Why? I mean it's in the past, but don't you ever regret not getting to know them more?" She questions.
Jin looks at the building in front of him, "We were all going in separate directions. We all had different things on our minds. We honestly never would have met if it weren't for that bookstore. I guess it was the only thing holding us together. You could say that we were just leaves that blew away in the wind. We were holding onto the branch with all of our will. But, eventually we just fell off. We all flew to different places. We would always remember the bookstore, that one branch, where we all met. We would remember the people that came there, but it would only be a memory."
"Wow...I guess that makes sense. Do you ever wonder what could have happened if you stayed in touch?" The woman asks.
Jin nods, "All the time. Those guys could've been my friends. I always wonder what they could be doing now." The woman nods her head. Jin smiles and glances at the building one more time before walking down the sidewalk.
