Temptation's Revival
Hi! I have another one-shot for you all today. It's been a bit since I've posted anything in this book. Today, I have a story for you with BTS's Golden Maknae Jeon Jungkook as the main character. I got inspired by a legend, I won't tell you which one, so try to see if you can guess it. It isn't super obvious as it's pretty loosely centered around it, but I feel like you'll make the connection if you know what the legend is. It's going to be pretty long, but I hope that you enjoy every single part of it. Also, small trigger warnings, death and blood will be mentioned, but it won't be anything crazy. I just wanted to let you know. I don't want to say much more about the story, so let's just get right into it.
Jungkook sits on a plastic blue chair, which is lined up against the wall in a row with its twins. There are people sitting nearby him, but he is alone. The chair to his left and right are completely unoccupied. The room he's in is painted a bluish grey color with white trimming and gray carpeting. The sound of the fan whirring and the representatives typing on their keyboards echoes loudly. The representatives are positioned side by side, in a parallel line to the row of chairs, in separate partitioned desks areas where each works with focus. Just then, the glass doors slide open as a man and woman in their mid-thirties enter the building with anxious expressions on their faces. Jungkook, along with all the others in the room, turn to stare at the newcomers for a second before minding their own business once again. The couple shuffles around a bit, eyeing the chairs in search of a place for them amongst the crowded waiting room. "Why don't we sit there?" The man suggests, gesturing to where Jungkook is.
The woman nods, "He's alone. We can just ask him to shift over." Jungkook frowns at their words, feeling upset at what they are insinuating. He crosses his arms over his chest as the couple walks over to him. "Excuse me?" The man says in an overly courteous tone, "Since you're alone, do you mind moving to the next seat so my wife and I can sit together?" Jungkook purses his lips together and tilts his head down, glaring daggers at the couple's perfectly shined shoes. He doesn't answer the two, staying silent and stubborn. "Hello? Did you hear what I said?" The man questions, waving his hand in front of Jungkook's face. Jungkook lets out a huff, forcing himself not to reach out and slap the man's hand. He takes a deep breath, trying to calm down before muttering under his breath, "I'm not alone."
"What was that?" The woman questions.
Jungkook bristles, lifting his head up and flashing the couple a steely gaze, "I said, I'm not alone."
------------
Jungkook rummaged through the trash can, hoping to find something edible. He huffed as the long tendrils of his unruly hair fell into his eyes. He blew at it, making the strand lift up and nestle back down to the side of his face. His eyes narrowed as he started to dig through the trash with more urgency. He felt his hands start to get sticky as he brushed against melted candy wrappers and used straws. His nose scrunched up, finding himself getting a bit fed up with his unsuccessful search. "What does it take to get some food?" Jungkook muttered, considering dumping the litter onto the floor. Just as he was about to give up, his hands closed around a Styrofoam container. Jungkook's eyes widened as he quickly yanked it out of the trash and ripped it open. He let out a delighted cheer as he saw the bits of fried rice and cold vegetables gathered in one corner of the container. He placed it on the ground and got to his knees. He bent down and used his hands to shovel the leftovers into his mouth. It was disgusting. The pieces of rice were hard and the vegetables had a weird taste to them, but Jungkook could have cared less in that moment. He hadn't eaten for a long time. He was starving and in no position to be picky. "You shouldn't eat that," An unfamiliar voice called out. Jungkook's eyes flitted up to see a young man garbed in sweats and with a bag thrown over his shoulder. His black hair was tousled and his tall frame created a long shadow on the ground. His skin was warm and he wore a concerned expression on his face. Jungkook quickly decided to ignore the stranger and continue to enjoy his week-old meal. "Hey, did you hear me?" The stranger questioned. Jungkook didn't answer. The stranger shook his head before walking over and kicking the Styrofoam container. The rice flew into the air and scattered around on the damp ground of the alleyway. Jungkook shrieked as he stared at soiled remains of his dumpster-found food. "What the hell is wrong with you!?" Jungkook shouted, "I was eating that!"
"You shouldn't," The stranger stated, "You'll get sick."
Jungkook scoffed, "I'll get sick if I don't eat anything! You just ruined the only meal that I've had in a week! So, just walk away and leave me alone!!!" The stranger pursed his lips together and walked closer to Jungkook. He bent down and reached out to grasp his arms. Jungkook stiffened in the stranger's hold, wondering what he was doing or why he would even touch him. He's filthy and there was this strong odor coming from him. His clothes were stretched out and covered in dirt. His hair was coarse and unkempt. Why would this stranger want to be anywhere near him? Jungkook's eyes met the stranger's which shone with this unfounded care and kindness that he had never seen before. Especially not around him. The stranger helped Jungkook get to his feet before flashing a dimpled smile to him. "W-what are you doing?" Jungkook stuttered.
"Helping you," The stranger answered.
"Why?" Jungkook questioned, "I don't know you."
"I'm Kim Namjoon," The stranger stated, "There. Now you know me. What's your name?"
"Jeon Jungkook," He answered, "Is there something you want from me?"
"No," Namjoon said.
"Then, why are you talking to me?" Jungkook asked.
"Can I not talk to you?" Namjoon questioned.
Jungkook cleared his throat, "It's just that people usually avoid people like me."
"Like you?" Namjoon echoed.
"You know..." Jungkook muttered, "A runaway..." Jungkook hasn't had an easy life. He never knew his parents. He was an orphan that cycled through foster care for years, until he had enough and fled. He had been on the run since then. He had no place to call home and no one to care about him. He just did what he could to survive. "Like us," Namjoon stated.
"W-what?" Jungkook questioned, not sure if he read what the older said correctly or not.
"You and me," Namjoon explained, "We're the same."
"Y-you're a runaway too?" Jungkook asked with wide eyes. He scanned the young man in front of him up and down in surprise. Kim Namjoon didn't look like a runaway. He had clean clothes and a healthy body. He was nothing like Jungkook. How could he be like him? "I was in your position a couple years ago," Namjoon said. Jungkook stiffened, realizing that he said those words out loud. "I was a mess after I ran from my orphanage," Namjoon chuckled, "What you see today...well, it wasn't easy."
"So, what?" Jungkook asked, his tone turned harsh, "You see me while walking down and start getting nostalgic or something?" His eyes narrowed as he looked at the older, whose kind-hearted gaze hasn't faded away. Namjoon shook his head, "I actually wanted to invite you to stay at my place."
"Excuse me?" Jungkook questioned, his eyebrows raising.
"It isn't much," Namjoon said, "But, I have an extra bed and food and spare clothes..."
"Do I look like a charity case to you?" Jungkook huffed.
"Hey, hey, don't get the wrong idea," Namjoon said, "I'm not doing this for any ulterior motive or anything. It's just....you're alone. Aren't you?"
Jungkook pursed his lips together and slowly nodded his head, "Yeah, I am."
"I am too," Namjoon said, "And I've never really liked being alone. Do you?"
"No," Jungkook answered.
"So, if the both of us were together..." Namjoon said, "We wouldn't be alone anymore." Jungkook blinked a couple of times in surprise as he took in the older's words. He didn't know what to say or do. Those words resonating deep within him. He felt it in his heart and in his gut. It rang in his mind like some sort of mantra. He wouldn't be alone anymore. Why was that such a beautiful thought? "So?" Namjoon asked in a hopeful tone, "What do you say?" Jungkook fell silent for a second, considering it even though he had pretty much already come to a decision. The young runaway slowly nodded his head. Namjoon grinned, his dimples flashing like little stars on the sides of his cheek. Jungkook couldn't help then but stare at Kim Namjoon in wonder. From that moment forward, Jungkook was never alone. And he would do anything to keep it that way.
------------
"Does that mean you won't move?" The man asks. Jungkook glances back and forth between the couple for a second before sighing and sliding to the seat on his right. The couple flash him thankful expressions before sitting down. "They're probably here for their kid," The young man next to him murmurs, shielding his voice with a cuffed hand. Jungkook eyes him with a judging look before leaning back in his seat and shifting a bit. He doesn't understand why so many people feel the need to talk to him today. He came here for one reason and one reason only. And that reason isn't to chat it up with random strangers who are also using this service. "I'm Jung Hoseok by the way," The man says.
"Nice to meet you," Jungkook says in an unamused tone.
"If you don't mind me asking...who are you here for?" Hoseok says with a curious expression. Jungkook's shoulders lock at the question, finding it intrusive. Who does this person think he is? Whoever he is here for is his business and no one else's. This isn't something you just share with random strangers. "Oh, sorry..." Hoseok says, after realizing that Jungkook isn't answering, "I can tell you who I'm here for if that would make you more comfortable." It wouldn't, Jungkook thinks. He finds the man sitting beside him weird. He's too talkative for his own good. He's too open. They don't need to know every little thing about one another. It's not like they're going to become friends after their encounter in the waiting room of this place. This place isn't exactly somewhere you create friendships. "I'm here for my cousin," Hoseok says, "He was sick."
"I'm sorry," Jungkook says, not knowing how else to respond.
Hoseok smiles and shakes his head, "It's okay. After today...none of that will matter."
"Yeah..." Jungkook murmurs.
"So, what about you?" Hoseok asks. Jungkook sighs, still not wanting to share his reason for being here. But, he can't just refuse to answer, especially after Hoseok told him his explanation. It would be rude. "My hyung," Jungkook answers, after remaining silent for a second longer.
Hoseok nods his head, "You two must have been close."
------------
"JK!" Namjoon called out as he entered his small apartment. Jungkook lifted his head up from where he was sprawled out on an old blue couch. He looked at Namjoon with a quizzical expression on his face. The older's hands are filled with many bags. He struggled to carry them all as he kicked off his shoes and made his way to the tiny circular dining room table. Namjoon placed the bags on the table before reaching into one of them and pulling out a box that had steam wafting from it. The scent slowly travels over to Jungkook, whose eyebrows perk up. He clambered off of the couch and made his way over to the table, "I didn't know that you were going to buy take-out, hyung."
Namjoon smiled, "I wanted to surprise you."
"Well, consider me surprised," Jungkook said as he pulled the chair out and took a seat. He reached for the box and opened it up to reveal steaming, glistening chicken. Jungkook hummed in pleasure as he grabbed one and started chowing down. Namjoon chuckled at the younger's eagerness, "I don't know how in the world you survived out there considering how much you eat." Jungkook tried to reply, but found it rather impossible with the amount of food in his mouth. Namjoon laughed louder and ruffled Jungkook's hair affectionately, "Eat carefully." Jungkook nodded his head and flashed the older a bunny-toothed grin. Namjoon took a seat as well before reaching for one of the bags. He pulled out two medium sized boxes and pushed them across the table. Jungkook eyed them with curiosity, "What are those?"
"A camera and headphones," Namjoon answered, "They're for you."
"F-for me?" Jungkook questions, his eyes becoming wide orbs.
Namjoon nodded, "I know you started taking a liking to video production. I wanted to get you something, so that you can start making your own videos and stuff..." Jungkook reached out to peek at the boxes and he let out a breath when he saw the new, state of the art equipment his hyung had presented to him. "This...this is too much," Jungkook murmured, "You must have spent so much money..."
"Don't worry about that," Namjoon said, "They're my gift to you."
"But, why?" Jungkook asked, "There's no special occasion or anything..."
"Do I need a special day to give someone I'm close to something?" Namjoon said, "There's no reason behind me giving these to you. I just wanted to do something nice for you since you're so important to me." Jungkook looked up at his hyung with a touched expression on his face. He opened his mouth to say something, but couldn't find the right words to even describe how he felt. "Use them well, Jungkookie," Namjoon said with a wide smile. Jungkook stared at his happy hyung with an innocent expression on his face. As he did this, he felt his eyes start to water. Tears trickled down his face and Jungkook let out a quiet whimper. Namjoon pouted when he saw his dongseong start to cry. He got up from his seat and walked over to the younger. He bent down and started wiping at his cheeks, "Aw...Jungkookie...why are you crying? You should be happy."
"I-I-I am," Jungkook choked out, "T-they're h-hap-happy t-tears..." The young man pressed his lips together and squeezed his eyes shut in an attempt to stop his crying. It didn't help though. If anything, it had just made the boy sob even harder. Jungkook's entire body shook and he let out soft blubbers that made no sense. "Jungkook-ah," Namjoon cooed, running his hand through the younger's hair, "It's okay. Try to calm down and stop crying."
"I'm t-trying!" Jungkook wailed, "But, I ca-can't! I...I d-don't know why...it's just...I'm so thankful, hyu-hyung! No one's done something like this for me! Ever!!!" Namjoon's expression softened and he wrapped his arms around Jungkook's shaking frame. He squeezed him tight and patted his shoulder in a comforting manner. This only seemed to make Jungkook sob even louder as a million emotions flooded his body. He leaned into the older's hold for support as tears continued to wrack his body. Namjoon chuckled, "Shhh...it's okay, Jungkookie. Hyung's here..."
------------
"Jeon Jungkook," A representative calls out. Jungkook's gaze travels to look at the lady for a couple seconds, wondering if she really did say his name or not. The woman looks back at him, an impatient expression settling on her face. Jungkook sighs before slowly getting up from his seat and walks over to the woman's cubicle. The representative is dressed in work clothes, triangular shaped glasses sit on the bridge of her nose and her hair is pulled taunt into a sleek bun. "Hi," Jungkook murmurs.
"Hello," The woman says, not looking up from her computer as she types, "You may have a seat." Jungkook nods his head and lowers himself onto the seat. He purses his lips together and shifts a bit in his seat awkwardly as the representative ignores him as if he isn't even in front of her. The lady seems extremely focused on whatever it is she is doing on her computer. She isn't at all interested in Jungkook even though her job description requires her to be. After a couple more stiff minutes of this, the representative's face turns to look at Jungkook. "Welcome to Gateway," The woman says in an overly perky, yet robotic voice. It's clear that she's said these words too many times. "Is this your first time using our services?" She asks.
"Yes," Jungkook states.
"Alright then," The representative says, "Let me go over how this will work and give you the rules." As she launches into her explanation, just as fake and strained as her greeting, Jungkook's mind starts to wander. The representative's voice becomes a monotonous drone. Jungkook's face becomes blank as he waits for the woman to finish her spiel. He doesn't even understand why she even bothers going over all of this. This may be his first time here, but he isn't an idiot. It's such a common part of their life now. Everyone knows how this works.
------------
Namjoon sighed as he closed the door behind him. The apartment was completely dark and a clock on the wall read 1 am. His head drooped and he yawned, tired after his long day. He weakly slipped his shoes off before trudging towards his room. When he opened the door, he was met by Jungkook, who was sitting up on his mattress with his phone in his hand. "What are you still doing up?" Namjoon asked as he trailed over to his bed and plopped down on it. He rubbed the sides of his face to try to wake himself up before running his hand through his hair. "I couldn't sleep," Jungkook said, "Why are you home so late? It's 1 in the morning..."
"I just got off work," Namjoon answered.
"This late?" Jungkook questioned, "I thought your shift ended at 8."
"It does," Namjoon said, "But, I get off my new job at midnight."
"New job?" Jungkook asked, "Why did you get another job?"
"I need more credits," Namjoon said simply.
"Why?" Jungkook frowned, his face contorting in concern for his hyung, "Are we struggling with money? I didn't think we had any financial problems. If we did, I'm sure that I could have just gotten a job instead of you taking on another one. You already work so much as it is..."
Namjoon shook his head, "We're fine."
"Then, why the extra job?" Jungkook asked.
"I'm saving up for a Revival," Namjoon said.
Jungkook blinked a couple of times in surprise, "Revival?"
"You've heard of it. Haven't you?" Namjoon said, "It's a way to bring back the dead." Revival was created by Gateway Corp three years ago through their research in science and the mystic arts. When they had first released the idea to the public, the entire world lost their minds. The concept itself seemed impossible. After all, how could the dead be brought back? Many were skeptical. Some feared that they were messing with the balance of life. And others were willing to do anything to try Revival out for themselves. When the first person was brought back from the dead, the world exploded once again. People feared the effects of the Revival. They were worried that all those zombie movies would start to come true. But, their fears were unfounded, because the person who came back was completely normal. They could walk and talk and the memories they had from before dying were all still there. It was as if the person had never left this world in the first place. Revival boomed after that. Everyone wanted a chance to bring back those they had lost. It was then that Gateway Corp decided that they could profit from the desperation of the public. They put a price tag on the Revival process. If people wanted their loved ones back, they would have to pay money. Lots of money. Even with the high price, people all over still used Revival. It was worth every penny. Although many supported the use of Revival, many disagreed with it, calling it unethical. There were mass protests against the use of the process and constant news coverage questioning if it was the right thing to do. On top of that, those who did use Revival didn't always walk away happy. There have been many lawsuits against Gateway Corp from upset patrons who had paid for a Revival, but weren't able to bring back their lost one. None of them actually passed though. All having been ruled in the favor of Gateway, who claimed that the customer had been informed of the rules and what would happen if they didn't follow it multiple times during the process. A Revival is a fickle thing. No one really understands how it works, but the rules of the whole ordeal are strict. If they're not followed, the Revival isn't going to work. Everyone knows that. Especially now. That doesn't mean that everyone follows the rules though, so there are always customers that proceed to sue Gateway even though at this point it is a given that they will lose. Regardless of all this pressure the corporation was given, Revival thrived. It's a commonplace thing nowadays. No one remembers a time where the process didn't exist. Everyone knows what it is and everyone uses it or plans to. Revival is just one of those things. Those special things that change the world that we know. The question is though, if it's for the better or not. Jungkook nodded his head, "I know what it is. I'm just sort of shocked that you want to use it. I...I didn't know you lost anyone..." Namjoon took a deep breath and pursed his lips together. His head lowered and his hands started to quiver a bit. Jungkook's eyebrows furrowed, "You don't have to tell me about it, hyung."
Namjoon shook his head, "I want you to know."
"Okay..." Jungkook murmured, touched that the older was willing to share his past with him, "Take your time." Namjoon nodded and fell silent for a couple of minutes, slowly building up the courage to reveal the rather touchy subject of a lost loved one. "I had a younger brother..." Namjoon whispered after a bit of time had passed, "His name was Taehyung. He and I were always really close. Our appa was always working to support us since he was a single dad, so it was just me and him more often than not. When appa died, we were both sent to the same orphanage. It...it was a horrible place. The director and the workers were cruel. They didn't care about us. We couldn't stay there. I was the one that suggested we run away. Taehyung trusted me and that night we fled. We lived on the streets for years. Things weren't ideal, but we were healthy enough and we had each other, so things were okay. And then...one winter...Taehyung....Taehyungie....he....he...he got sick. I tried to help him, but I was young and I couldn't do anything for him. We didn't have any place to get out of the cold and no money for medicine or doctors. I...I couldn't do anything, but watch him get worse and worse. He...he held out for a week. But, in the end, it was too much for him. He...he died..."
"I'm so sorry, hyung," Jungkook said, his forehead knitted together in concern. Namjoon shook his head, pressing his lips together. He gripped at the sheets of his bed and let out a shaky breath. He blinked quickly, trying to get rid of the tears building in the corners of his eyes. He forced a shaky smile onto his face and let out a dry chuckle, "It's fine. It was a long time ago...and well if things go well...I'll be able to bring him back."
"I'm sure that it'll all work out, hyung," Jungkook said, reaching out to pat the older's knee in support, "You're doing everything you can to bring him back."
"I hope that's true, Jungkook-ah," Namjoon muttered under his breath, "I really hope that it's true..."
------------
"Do you understand all the rules and how the process works?" The representative asks. Jungkook doesn't answer at first, too absorbed in the past, not having listened to anything the representative was blabbering about. "Hello?" The representative calls out, "Sir, are you listening to me?" Suddenly, Jungkook snaps back to reality. He meets the woman's eyes, who look back at him and judge him silently. "Yes, yes," Jungkook says, nodding his head, "I was just thinking of something...."
"I hope that is true," She states, "Everything I just told you is very important to the success of the Revival."
"If that's true, why did you say it like it's the most monotonous thing ever..." Jungkook mutters under his breath.
"Did you say something, sir?" The representative asks.
Jungkook shakes his head, "It's nothing."
"Well then, let's get this show on the road. Shall we?" The representative says, moving her mouse and clicking it, "If you could, please give me your ID for the payment transaction, as well as the ID of the person you will be reviving." Jungkook shoves his hand into his pocket and pulls out his wallet. He takes out two rectangular white pieces of plastic and passes it to the representative. The woman takes the IDs from his hand and places one of them on the table. She keeps a hold of the other, glancing at it as she types the pin number into the computer. Jungkook stares at the ID that the representative left on the table. The picture looks back at him with its almond shaped eyes full of care and tenderness. Jungkook can feel his heart pang as emotions hit him like a wrecking ball. He lets out a shaky breath and squeezes his eyes shut, leaning against the chair and speaking to himself in his head. It's going to be okay, he thinks, after today, everything will go back to the way it's always been. "Here you go," The representative says, passing back the two IDs to Jungkook. The young man takes them from her and slips them back into his wallet before stowing it away in the ocean of his jacket pocket. The representative turns her attention back again to her computer screen, clicking away at her keyboard again. She nods as she does this, clearly proud of her work. "How are you two connected?" She asks suddenly.
"Huh?" Jungkook questions in a quizzical tone.
"Usually, when people come to use our services, they bring back people they're related to," The representative explains, "But, you aren't related to the person you want to bring back. I find it interesting that you would spend all your credits on a Revival for someone who isn't that close to you." Jungkook frowns at that statement. He doesn't know if the lady intended for it to sound as rude as it came off, but either way, it did. The representative had no right to make assumptions about him or his hyung. She doesn't know him. She doesn't know anything about him. And she doesn't deserve to. The fact that she would say something like that to a paying customer is absolutely ridiculous. It's absolutely uncalled for. Jungkook has every right to ignore her words. He has every right to curse her out. And most of all, he has no reason to have to address her words. But, he does. Maybe, it's out of spite. Maybe, it's cause he hates when people say anything negative about hyung. But, whatever the reason is, he does it. "We are family," Jungkook states, his eyes burning with fire as he glares at the representative.
------------
Jungkook leaned against the edge of the couch, staring out the window with a nostalgic expression on his face. The city outside was downcast with storm clouds. Rain droplets streaked down the glass at a steady pace. Jungkook hummed under his breath as he tapped against the frame of the window with his pointer finger. "What are you doing?" Namjoon asked, walking over to stand beside his dongseong. His hair was damp and a towel was wrapped around his neck, just having taken a shower not too long ago. "Just thinking..." Jungkook said.
"About what?" Namjoon questioned.
"The rain...it reminds me of nights that I spent all alone on the streets," Jungkook said, "I remember how horrible it was. I was wet and cold and there was nothing to eat because people stay inside during this type of weather. There was nowhere I could hide out to let the storm pass either cause no one would want me near their storefront or anything like that. I would always get sick afterwards too. It was just the worst thing that could possibly happen to someone living on the streets. The only good part about it was that I got a shower...which I'm sure people appreciated." Namjoon chuckled at that before slowly nodding his head, agreeing with the younger's words, having gone through similar things. He looked out the window as well, watching the mesmerizing trickle of rain falling from the sky. "I would have still been out there if it weren't for you," Jungkook mused.
"Me?" Namjoon said in a surprised tone.
"Yeah, you took me in," Jungkook explained, "You gave me a roof over my head and put food in my stomach. You give me gifts for no reason and shower me with more love than I deserve. If it weren't for you, I don't know where I would have been. The life I'm living right now...it's all thanks to you."
"You're giving me too much credit," Namjoon said, "I just did what any other good person would have done..."
"That's not true," Jungkook stated, "You're the only person who ever even spoke to me. Most of the time, people just stare and judge me silently..."
"Kookie..." Namjoon murmured.
"You know..." Jungkook let out a breath, "I don't understand it ...."
"Understand what?" Namjoon asked.
"Why you took me in," Jungkook said simply, "I'm no one. I was just a stupid runaway kid without anything to call his own. I was skin and bones, and filthy as heck. I just don't get it. Why would you want to help me? Why would you go out of your way to take me into your home and treat me the way you do? There's no reason for it."
"You know why..." Namjoon murmured.
"I know that you said it was cause you're lonely, and I'm sure that is part of the reason, but there's more to it. I'm sure of that," Jungkook said, "I've been trying to figure it out for a while now. At first, I thought it was cause you saw me as a replacement for your younger brother. I reminded him of you or something. You thought that I could fill the hole in your heart that he had left..."
"That isn't true," Namjoon stated, "I would never use you."
"I know. It was just a thought that popped up in my head, but I dismissed it like a second later. I know you, hyung, and I know you would never do something like that in your life," Jungkook said as a small smile bloomed onto his face, "I still don't get it though. Why would you take such good care of me? Even now, you treat me so well and I haven't done anything for you in return. I don't deserve anything that you've given or done for me..."
"Don't say that," Namjoon said, "You deserve all of it."
"Why, hyung?" Jungkook asked, "Why do I? Why did you take me in?"
Namjoon let out a breath, "I...I don't know. I really don't know why I decided to approach you that day. I don't know why I took you in. I just did. And I don't regret it. It was probably one of the best decisions I made in my entire life. You...you became someone really important to me, Jungkook. That's why I do so much for you. Cause...just like Taehyung was a little brother to me, so are you. I didn't expect us to be so close, but I'm glad we are. You're my family, Jungkookie. And I do anything for my family." Jungkook looked at his hyung with a quivering mouth and watery eyes. Namjoon cooed and reached out to pull the younger into a hug. "Are you okay?" Namjoon asked. Jungkook nodded and took a deep breath, doing his best to regain his composure. He didn't expect to get so emotional so suddenly, but he found himself being very touched by his hyung's kind words. Namjoon was just as special and important of a person to Jungkook. He really did feel like a brother to him. Between the constant nagging from the older and the teasing and the joking around, they really were like siblings. "I...I never had a family before," Jungkook admitted in a hollow tone.
"Well, now you do," Namjoon said, smiling with his dimples on full display, "I'm your family, Jungkookie."
------------
The representative stiffens at Jungkook's angry gaze. She coughs a bit before slowly nodding her head and shifting in her seat. She turns her head away and pretends to focus entirely on her computer screen again. A slight smirk appears on Jungkook's face, satisfied at the obvious discomfort of the representative. "Can we move this along?" Jungkook asks, "I want my hyung back."
"Yes, yes, of course. Let's see...your payment has been made," The representative says, focusing once more on her job rather than the story behind her current customer, "And your requested Revival will take place in a couple of minutes. You just need to give us some time to prepare for the process. We will call you when it's time. In the meantime, please wait in the waiting room." Jungkook sighs, but nods his head. He stands up and heads back to his seat from before. He huffs as he plops onto the same plastic blue chair. He crosses his arms over his chest and purses his lips together. His eyes bounce back and forth as he watches the happenings in the waiting room. Other customers are waiting patiently as well, some are going through the same process that Jungkook just did, and every so often one is called through this huge set of double doors that are near the far end of the waiting room. The doors stretch from the ceiling to the floor with golden trimming and painted a deep shade of red. The designs of the door are fancy curls and the handles are crafted in similar shapes. In the center of both doors is this plain sign, appearing out of place against the grand door, which reads do not enter unless invited inside. Those doors lead to where the dead are brought back to life. No one knows what it looks like except those who have used Revival before. Gateway has made sure of that. When everyone schedules an appointment for the process, they are required to sign a confidentiality agreement alongside it. It never made much sense to Jungkook to keep it a secret, but he didn't care that much. He doesn't need to know how Revival works unlike the rest of the world who have been searching for the details to Gateway's creation for ages. All Jungkook cares about is that the process brings back his hyung. As long as his hyung comes back to life, he could care less about how it happens. Jungkook frowns and shakes his head, getting impatient even though he's only been waiting around for a couple of minutes. He doesn't even understand what the Gateway representatives need to set up. Why would he need to wait when the whole Revival process is magic and state of the art technology? This should be a quick, smooth thing. He shouldn't have to wait around. He just wants to get his hyung back as soon as possible. The quicker this whole Revival business gets done, the quicker he can return to his normal life. "Min Yoongi," A representative calls out. The man stands near the huge double doors with a tablet in his hand. He is garbed in all black and his face is a tad bit scruffy with an afternoon shadow. "Here," Min Yoongi says.
"We're ready to perform the Revival for your lost one," The representative states, "If you could follow me please." Min Yoongi walks over to the man and follows him as he leads him through the doors. The other customers in the waiting room start to murmur amongst themselves, anxious as well to walk through those very doors and bring back the dead. Jungkook wonders how many people have gone through the same thing he did. He wonders if they have gone through the same things that he has to get their lost ones back. He wonders if the Revival means as much to them as it does to him.
------------
Jungkook and Namjoon sat side by side on the rooftop of their apartment building. Their legs were hanging over the edge, dangling in the air without a care in the world. Their heads tilted upwards and their eyes locked on the sky, observing the streaks of orange and purple painting the world above. The soft sounds of a piano floated through the air from Jungkook's phone. The two young men had serene looks on their faces, calm as they watched the sun slowly lower from the sky. "I got a job today," Jungkook said.
"Really?" Namjoon said, raising his eyebrows in surprise.
Jungkook nodded his head, "I wanted to start saving up credits too..."
"Why?" Namjoon asked, "If you needed money, you could have just told me. I would have given you some. You don't have to work or anything if you don't want to."
"I want to do this, hyung," Jungkook said, "Don't worry."
"But...why?" Namjoon questioned, "Why do you want to save up on credits?"
"For a Revival," Jungkook answered simply.
"A Revival?" Namjoon blinked, trying to determine if he heard him correctly, "You have someone you want to bring back?"
"Not at the moment..." Jungkook said, "I'm just saving up for the future...in case something happens."
"What do you mean?" Namjoon asked with a quizzical expression on his face. Jungkook sighed, knowing that his hyung isn't going to understand unless he blatantly says what he means. "In case something were to happen to you," Jungkook said, "I want to be prepared..."
Namjoon's eyes widened and he gaped a bit as he tried to find the right words, "Jungkookie..."
"If something happens, I'm going to bring you back, Namjoon hyung," Jungkook stated in a firm tone. Namjoon let out a breath and placed his hand on the younger's shoulder. He gently squeezed it and patted it gently. "I appreciate it, but you don't have to," Namjoon said, "Revival's cost a lot of money....and I'm not worth all that trouble."
"That isn't true!" Jungkook exclaimed, "You are worth every last penny, hyung! We're family!!! Remember!? We do anything for one another. If something does go wrong, I can't just let you die! I could never live with myself if I do!" His voice started to get a bit strained as his emotions began to rise. His eyes became damp and his entire body quivered. He sniffled as he cried softly, "I...I wouldn't know what to do without you, Namjoonie hyung. You're the reason I am even here at this moment. If it weren't for you, I don't even think I would be alive. I owe my life right now to you. I can't lose you. I refuse to lose you. You're all I have. You're everything to me, hyung..." Namjoon sighed and lifted his hands up, rubbing away Jungkook's tears which kept slowly dripping down his cheeks like steady rainfall. "I lo-love you so much, hyungie. I love you more than anything in the entire universe!" Jungkook sobbed, launching himself into the arms of the older. Namjoon grunted as Jungkook's weight hit him. He wrapped his arm around the younger, keeping him close so he didn't accidentally fall from the ledge of the roof. Jungkook blubbered into Namjoon's shirt, so much so that the older could feel the dampness of his already soaked clothes against his skin. "I love you too, Jungkook-ah," Namjoon murmured, patting the younger's back in a comforting manner, "You know you mean the world to me too. And if something were to happen to you....I would bring you back the second I have enough credits to pay for a Revival."
"R-really?" Jungkook stuttered, his voice a tad bit muffled against Namjoon's chest.
Namjoon nodded, "I can't live without my cry-baby bunny."
"I'm not a cry baby," Jungkook huffed.
Namjoon chuckled, "I disagree." Jungkook scrunched up his nose in distaste before shoving his hyung back and elbowing him in the stomach. Namjoon groaned a bit and glared at the younger, "Hey!"
"It's what you get for calling me a cry baby!" Jungkook exclaimed, sticking his tongue out.
Namjoon shook his head, his eyes narrowing and spoke in a mischievous tone, "Oh, you're going to get it now..." Jungkook laughed as he quickly stood up and darted away. Namjoon huffed as he got up as well and started to chase after him with a wide grin on his face.
------------
"Jeon Jungkook," A representative with slicked back hair calls as he steps out from the double doors. Jungkook quickly stands from his seat and rushes over to where the man is waiting for him. His face has an urgent expression, ready to start the process right this second. "Are you ready?" The representative asks.
"More than ready," Jungkook replies, his hands clenching and unclenching into fists anxiously.
"Good," The man says, "I will lead you down the hallway to the main chamber where the Revival will be taking place. Once we are there, I will provide you with more information as to how the process will go and remind you once more of the rules. Do you understand?"
"Yes," Jungkook states.
"After you then..." The representative says, standing to the side and gesturing to the open doorway. Jungkook walks forward, making his way into a long dark hall that is illuminated only by buzzing lamps hanging along the side walls. The area echoes loudly as his footsteps hit the pavement. He looks around the area with curiosity, but continues to move at a steady pace. The representative is following behind him, completely silent. As they walk, Jungkook can feel his heart rising steadily as expectation and hope bubble inside him. He's actually here. He's actually going to perform a Revival. He's been working for this for so long and it's finally going to happen. Soon enough, he steps out of the long hallway and into this large chamber. The ceiling is a curved dome shape with black trimmings and huge pillars that stretch to the ground. The place is built similarly to a colosseum. The area slopes downward and there are steps leading towards the center area where there is a massive door. This area has no electricity, light is being provided by torches held by stiff representatives garbed in robes. There are some standing near the columns with blank expressions on their faces while others stand around this huge door
The door is colored a blood red with interesting sigils and designs on it. It isn't attached to anything, standing by itself straight. It's just a door. It doesn't appear to go anywhere or lead to any place, but it does. The floor is made of smooth rock and has similar sigils made of gold placed on top of every third stone panel. In front of the door is a raised circular panel that leads to a sloping pathway into the shadowy darkness. Jungkook lets out a breath as he takes it all in. "So, this is Revival," He murmurs, his heart starting to race in anticipation. This is it. This is where Kim Namjoon is going to be brought back to life.
------------
"You can't catch me!" Jungkook exclaimed in a sing-song tone. He had a wide toothy smile on his face as he walked backwards. His eyes trained on his hyung who was chuckling a couple feet away. "You sound like your five!" Namjoon called out.
"I wasn't the one who suggested we play tag in the first place!" Jungkook shouted back, "Are you sure I'm the one not acting my age!?"
"Well, I wasn't the one who suggested we make it a bet!" Namjoon said.
"You didn't have to agree to it!" Jungkook laughed, "You're just as competitive as me!"
"Hey, if I win you have to pay for lunch, that isn't a deal you turn down," Namjoon said.
"It's too bad that you aren't going to win!" Jungkook smirked as he started running forward again.
"We'll have to see about that!" Namjoon hollered as he chased after the younger. The two laughed as they darted around other pedestrians and ran down the sidewalk. Wide smiles graced both their faces as Jungkook continued to taunt his hyung. Namjoon huffed as he reached out to swipe at the younger, only to keep missing by just a couple of inches. Passersby were watching the two, shaking their heads at their childish antics, but at the same time finding their joy in their little game of tag refreshing. Jungkook came to a stop at the crossroads where the light was red. He bounced on the balls of his feet, glancing backwards to see Namjoon making a beeline towards him. Jungkook frowned as he anxiously looked at the stoplight, hoping for it to change. Sadly, it didn't and Namjoon slapped a hand on Jungkook's back as he reached the younger. "Got you!" Namjoon exclaimed, his breathing heavy.
"No fair!" Jungkook pouted, "I couldn't go cause the light was red."
"Too bad for you," Namjoon said, "Now, you have to pay for lunch." Jungkook groaned loudly while Namjoon chuckled, basking in the glory of his victory. He threw his arm over his dongseong's shoulders as they waited for the light to change. "I'm going to order a lot of meat," Namjoon muttered in a joyful tone.
"You stink," Jungkook sighed.
"Love you too, Kookie," Namjoon grinned. Just then the light turned green, the two started to walk forward, but stopped when they heard a loud squealing sound. Jungkook froze and looked around. His eyes widened when he saw a truck making a sharp turn and heading straight towards them. He tries to get himself to move, but he can't. His limbs are locked in place and his heart is clenching in his chest. "Jungkook!!!" Namjoon screams. The next thing that happened was a blur. Jungkook felt himself being thrown to the ground, rolling to the other side of the sidewalk. He groaned as he felt his skin get cut as he connected with the ground. He then heard a loud squeak and a thud followed by a crack. Jungkook's breath caught in his throat and he whirled his head around quickly. Blood started to rush to his ears and the entire world sounded echoey. He stared in disbelief and shock at the smoking truck stopped right in front of where he and Namjoon had once stood. There was blood painted on the hood of the car that trails to the side brick wall where a young man leaned limply against. Jungkook let out a shriek as he rushed to his feet. He stumbled forward, pushing past pedestrians who had started to gather around following the commotion. "Hyung!!!!! Jungkook bellowed as he dropped to the ground and grabbed onto Namjoon's arm. The man's eyes were open and lifeless, his body still and his clothes coated with sticky red blood. The world started to spin around him as Jungkook tried to get the older to respond to him. He called out to Namjoon in a strained voice. Tears gathered in his eyes and he started sobbing loudly. "Please! Please! Hyung! No!!! No!" Jungkook cried, his entire body shaking, "Hyung! You can't leave me! You can't! I can't do this without you! I need you! Hyung! Namjoon hyung!!!" He let out a scream, which shook everyone around him to the core, before throwing himself on top of Namjoon and squeezing him tightly. "H-hyung..." Jungkook whispered in a broken voice.
------------
"You will stand on that platform with your back towards the door," The representative explains as he leads Jungkook towards the center of the main chamber, "We will incite the process and open the doors to bring back your lost one. You must stay in that same position the entire time we do this. When we tell you that the Revival has been completed, you will walk straight down the path until you reach a side exit to the building. You will remain facing straight forward and not looking back at the person who was brought back. Only, and I mean only, when you have exited the building and the Revived human has been touched by the Sun's light, can you turn around to look at them."
"I know this," Jungkook says, getting a bit annoyed with all these instructions. He just wants to get this process started now. He wants his hyung back. "I'm sure you do, but I am ensuring that you understand how important it is that you follow this rule," The representative states, "If you so much as spare a quick glance at your lost one before they have left the building, the Revival will fail."
"I get it," Jungkook huffs, "Can we just do this already? I don't need to be reminded again."
The representative sighs, but nods his head, "Alright, if you say so..." He moves towards the side of the middle section, standing beside one of his fellow workers. "Let the Revival of Kim Namjoon begin!" He exclaims in a loud voice, his words echoing loudly in the chamber.
"Let the Revival begin!" The rest of the representatives repeat.
------------
Jungkook's life hadn't been the greatest. He has been through a lot more hardships filled with horrible memories than fond ones full of joy. Yet, out of all the different things that he was forced to experience, this one was the worst.
He stood alone in the crematory. A section was portioned off just for him to view the coffin containing his hyung as it slid into the furnace. His hands were pressed flat against the glass, his eyes locked on the scene before him. Jungkook was garbed head to toe in black. His face taunt and pale. His eyes bloodshot red and with dark circles around them. Streaks of tears were already dripping down his cheeks. They had been for days. Jungkook doesn't make any sound as he watched Namjoon steadily move into the burning flames.
He didn't react much on the outside, aside from his silent tears, but on the inside he was scrambling to handle the wave of emotions passing through him. Guilt over the fact that this was his fault. Anger directed towards the stupid driver who has yet to be charged for his crime. Fear of what he would have to do next. And most of all, pain from the death of Namjoon. His hyung. His family. His everything.
This moment was Jungkook's worst. It was worse than the actual accident. He was in shock that day. So much so, that he didn't remember much. It all had happened so fast. The accident itself, Namjoon's death, the hospital, the funeral plans. Everything. It became trauma that Jungkook unknowingly buried deep inside him. That was why this moment was worse. He couldn't do anything at this moment. He couldn't distract himself or run away. He couldn't pretend that nothing had changed. He just had to watch as his hyung was burnt to ashes.
It was so much more real now. The fact that Namjoon was dead. It was too much for Jungkook to process. It felt like he was losing everything that he ever had. And he was. Namjoon had given him everything. Namjoon was everything. And now, Jungkook's everything is gone. Without him, Jungkook's life was empty. Jungkook's life was nothing. How was he supposed to continue living without Namjoon? Without his constant guidance. Without his random acts of kindness. Without his shoulder to cry on. Without the comforting words. Without every single aspect of Kim Namjoon. How could he live? It just seemed impossible.
Jungkook's hands curled into fists that pressed hard against the cool glass separating him from the fire chamber. His mouth quivered as he watched the curling tendrils of fire lick at the wooden coffin his hyung was resting in. Even though it was Namjoon that was being cremated, it felt as if Jungkook was being burnt right alongside him. It felt like he was dead too.
------------
The words send shivers down Jungkook's spine. For good reason too, as there is power behind them. The sigils and scripture written on the ground and door start to glow faintly. The entire area seems to hum with this unseen force. Jungkook lets out a breath, anticipating what will happen next. His stays facing forward as he was instructed to. His back straight and his face serious. Any second now, his hyung will be coming back to life. Any second now, things will finally go back to normal. The representatives start chanting together. Their voices reverberating around the Revival chamber, making it sound even louder than it already is. Their words come off as nonsense to Jungkook, but he is sure that they mean something important. As the representatives shout out their incantation, the symbols all over start to burn with an even brighter light that gets stronger and stronger each second. The lights are joined by a wispy white smoke that travels from the door and coats the ground. The cry of the representatives suddenly becomes wild and rushed. They speak quicker than before and with more power behind their voices. Jungkook has no idea what is going on, but he doesn't think too much into it. Again, he doesn't care at all how the process gets done as long as it does get done. Suddenly, the entire chamber starts to vibrate and this loud thumping sound comes from the massive door. "Open the doors!" A voice bellows over the mantra. Jungkook heart thumps anxiously in his chest as he listens to the representatives as they grab onto the handles of the doors and pull it open. The chanting slowly comes to a stop and is replaced by creepy whispers that make goosebumps appear on Jungkook's arms. As the representatives rasp out more of their weird voodoo magic, the sounds of feet walking forward starts to echo. Jungkook feels his heart rising in his chest. Hope blooming inside him like a weed. "He's here," Jungkook whispers to himself. He doesn't know how he knows, but he does. He can sense his presence again. Namjoon is back. He is sure of it. "Kim Namjoon has been revived!" The representative announces, confirming what Jungkook already knows.
"He has been revived!" The others chorus as they slowly shut the door.
"H-hyung," Jungkook calls out, "Namjoon hyung?"
"He won't respond until he has been bathed in sunlight," The representative says.
"Right..." Jungkook murmurs, a tad bit disappointed.
"Walk," The representative states, "Walk straight towards the door and don't turn your head back even the slightest bit. Don't let temptation destroy the Revival. This is the last warning you will receive."
"I know..." Jungkook says, "I don't need another. I understand." He takes a deep breath as he steps off the platform, keeping his head straight forward. He can hear Namjoon's feet trailing behind him. He can feel his hyung following him towards the exit. He lets out a shaky breath, his eyes getting a tad bit misty. It's been so long since he's been in the same room as the older. It's been so long since Namjoon was alive. Jungkook starts to move quicker along the pathway, hurrying for the door as fast as he can. The anticipation driving him forward. His heart is racing within his chest, excited and anxious to see his hyung once again.
------------
"I did it, hyung," Jungkook said, "I finally did it. I made enough today to pay for a Revival. I'm going to bring you back, hyung." He sat on the edge of his bed with his head tilted down. His eyes were locked on the picture frame that he held tightly in his hands. The picture was of Namjoon. He had a wide smile on his face and his eyes were smiling along too. His dimples were on full display and life radiated from him. It was from a better time. A time that hopefully will come again.
"I'm sorry it took me so long, hyung," Jungkook murmured, "I wanted to revive you right away, but I didn't have enough credits. Between saving up for a Revival and rent and food and other stuff. It was a lot to handle. I tried to get more jobs, but there's not a lot of places that would hire someone like me...but that's beside the point. I have the money now and I've already scheduled for a Revival. It's just a matter of time before I can bring you back, Namjoon hyung. I'm going to bring you back. Just like I promised you I would." He spoke directly to the picture as if he was actually talking to his hyung. Jungkook knew deep down that he was just talking to a piece of paper, but it offered him comfort. He had found himself doing that more often than not these past few years. It's the only thing that kept him sane when Namjoon had died.
"It was so hard for me, hyungie," Jungkook said in a shaky voice, "To live without you. I didn't know what to do with myself. I felt so lost. I still do. For the first time in a long while, I was alone again. I didn't think it was going to be difficult. After all, I was by myself for so long and I've been through a lot of crap. I thought that I could handle it, but I couldn't. I got so used to having you around. I got used to having a family and not being alone. I got used to having everything that I could have ever wanted. And when you died...I lost all of it. I lost what was important to me....what I treasured...what mattered most. I lost everything."
Jungkook let out a quiet breath before falling onto his back. He stared up at the ceiling with a forlorn expression on his face. He raised his arm, which was holding the picture of Namjoon, into the air. He ran his finger along the photo gently, pursing his lips together in thought. Jungkook had always appreciated what he had, but he never expected to lose it so suddenly. And even when it did happen, he didn't think he would be impacted in a major way. He had been at rock bottom before and he dealt with it. He should have been able to do the same this time, but it was different.
"Those who had will be given more," Jungkook said to himself in his head, "And those that do not have, even what they have, will be taken from them." The reality of the matter is that Jungkook had never had anything to begin with. For that very reason, the little things he did have got stolen from him. It was a messed up world. But, Jungkook wasn't going to allow the law of the land to destroy his life. Not if he could help it. He would take what had been taken from him, until he became one of those who always had.
"You're going to come back to me, Namjoon hyung," Jungkook stated in a tone filled with determination and desperation, "And this time you aren't going to leave me ever again."
------------
Jungkook slows his pace down after speed walking for a while. He raises his arms up and stretches them outward. He moves like a zombie, tentatively stepping forward. He knows he is nearing the exit of the building and he wants to be ready. Jungkook starts to turn his head around to see if Namjoon is still following him, but stops himself just in time. "Stupid," Jungkook mutters to himself, "That was close..." He lets out a breath and shakes his head. He clears his mind and focuses, listening intently for any sign of his hyung. When the distant sound of breathing reaches his ears, Jungkook's heart warms. A smile appears on his face. He never thought a simple noise like breathing could make him so happy. Jungkook starts to walk forward again. His arms are still raised so that he can stop himself once he reaches the door. Each step he takes feels like a million years to Jungkook. He wishes he could just turn around and embrace his hyung. He hates that Revival is this convoluted. After all the money he paid, he should get to see Namjoon again as soon as he is brought back. But, of course, that is not the way the process works. And although Jungkook is impatient, he won't break the rules out of fear of Namjoon being taken from him again.
Suddenly, Jungkook's hands press against hard metal. He runs his hands down until he finds a cool door knob. He grips it and pushes it open. He blinks a couple of times to adjust to the brightness of the world outside. He takes a deep breath as he steps through the doorway and exits the building. As he does this, he thinks about Namjoon. It's been so long since he's seen him. He wants to see him. He wants to meet his warm, kind, life-filled eyes. He wants to see his sweet dimples and healthy, glowing skin. Jungkook wants to see his hyung. More than anything. He needs to. He craves to. He can sense Namjoon behind him still, but it isn't enough. He wants to see him face to face. Jungkook lets out a breath as he feels the warm light of the sun touch his arm. He's outside. That means he can turn around. He can finally turn around! Jungkook hesitates for a moment, wondering if he should walk just a tad bit further to be safe, but he decides against it. He can't bring himself to wait any longer. After all the hard work he put into bringing Namjoon back, he deserves this. He deserves to see Namjoon again after all these years.
Jungkook whirls around quickly. His eyes immediately find Namjoon. The older is garbed in the same outfit he wore on the day of the accident except they appear crisp and new. Almost like they were remade as Namjoon was reborn. Namjoon has just exited the building himself. The sun is shining in a straight line just centimeters from his feet. He, unlike Jungkook, has not yet been touched by the sun. The shadow of the building shielding him from the rays. Jungkook doesn't seem to be paying this much mind though, too focused on the fact that his hyung is standing in front of him. A smile blooms onto Jungkook's face as he meets Namjoon's eyes. They shine with affection and care and this wisdom that only Namjoon has ever had. There is life gleaming from him. His skin is tinged with a light dusting of pink. His hair and clothes both rustle a bit thanks to the gentle breeze passing through. His lips are curled into a small smile, shadows of his dimples appearing on his cheeks. He looks more alive than he ever had before. Jungkook has to pinch himself to make sure that he is actually seeing his hyung in front of him and not just some fever dream. Thankfully, once he does, Namjoon is still standing in the same place. "I can't believe this..." Jungkook murmurs, "You're back. You're really back." His eyes start to become watery and he starts to walk over to his hyung. He wants to hug him. He wants to hold him. He wants to feel Namjoon's rising chest and beating heart and warm skin. He wants to confirm with more than just his eyes that Namjoon is really alive.
As he walks towards his hyung, tears of joy trickle down his cheeks. A million emotions are running through Jungkook like a drug. Euphoria, satisfaction, pride. He can't even believe that this is happening right now. This moment is something he had dreamed about for years. And it is finally coming true. There were days that he had given up on all hope of a Revival. He was so afraid that he would just have to let Namjoon go. But, his worries don't matter anymore because everything that he wished would happen did. Jungkook lets out a small laugh, feeling like a giddy child. He glances at Namjoon again, who looks back at him. Jungkook lets out a gasp, feeling Namjoon slowly snap out of whatever stupor he was in when he first came out of those doors. Jungkook watches with eyes full of anticipation as Namjoon's mouth slowly opens. Jungkook lets out a breath as his heart thumps in his chest. His hyung is going to speak to him. Oh, he would die to hear his voice. It just makes this all so much more real. This beautiful picture. This lovely fantasy. It's everything Jungkook could hope for.
Until it isn't.
Suddenly, almost like a light switch being turned off, the life bursting from Namjoon fades. It drains from him as these shadowy arms come out from the open doorway and latch onto his hyung's body like leeches. Jungkook's blood freezes and his eyes become wide circles. He rushes forward calling out to Namjoon in a desperate tone. His once happy expression turns to absolute horror as he watches Namjoon die all over again. The lights flicker out in his eyes. The color of his skin becomes pasty and dead. His limbs turn into loose strands of spaghetti. "No...no...no," Jungkook says, shaking his head. He starts to run forward, pushing himself to move as fast as possible. As he runs, Namjoon sways back and forth like a yellowed blade of grass, unable to keep himself up anymore. "No!!!!!" Jungkook bellows when Namjoon starts falling backwards, straight into the waiting arms of the shadows. The arms hold him tightly, wrapping around his waist and his chest. Jungkook stretches his arms out, hoping to reach his hyung in time, but he's too slow. By the time he gets to the door, Namjoon is being yanked back into the building. The doors slam shut behind him. Jungkook lets out a guttural yell as he collides with the door. He bangs against it with his fist. His eyes darting back and forth rapidly as he tries to process what just happened. He reaches for the doorknob and twists the handle, but the door doesn't budge. Jungkook lets out a shriek as he shakes the knob harder, trying to get it to open.
"Let me in! Let me the hell in!!!!" Jungkook shouts, "Give him back to me! Give my hyung back! I did everything you told me to! Namjoon hyung should be okay! He should be alive! What happened!?! The Revival worked! Why did you take him away from me again!?! Give him back to me, you pieces of crap!!!!!!!" Jungkook growls as he slams against the door. He bangs his fist and kicks at it. He throws his entire body against it in an attempt to break it down. He breathes harshly as he does this. His chest rising and sinking in quick sharp jabs. His face is flushed red and his nostrils flared. He claws at the doors in desperation, his skin starting to tear and bleed from how hard he's been hitting the metal door. "Do you know what I went through to get him back!?" Jungkook calls out in a vengeful tone, "Do you know how hard I worked to raise enough credits to pay for his Revival!?! After everything I went through...all the years of torture without him....and you take him from me! You show me he's alive and then you yank him away! How dare you!? How dare you toy with me like this!?!"
He runs his hands through his hair harshly, yanking at it. He lets out a strangled screech. He bangs his head against the door. He can feel pain blossom on his forehead, but he ignores it. It's nothing compared to how he feels on the inside. It's nothing compared to the pure chaos he will experience if he doesn't get Namjoon back. "I can't live without him! He means too much to me!" Jungkook roars, "He's a part of me! If you kill him, you kill me! I'll die because of you! You'll have blood on your hands! Just give him back and everything will be okay! I need him! I need Namjoon!" He knows his words sound ridiculous, but he could care less. If that is what gets them to give him back his hyung, he'll say whatever nonsensical crap he can come up with. His pleas meet deaf ears though. Jungkook grits his teeth and presses his forehead against the door. He squeezes his eyes shut and clenches his hands into fists. Why is this happening to him? Why? Why? Why!?
Jungkook's mind is at war. A million emotions clashing with one another. It all builds heavily on him. Jungkook can't even interpret what he is experiencing right now. It is pain in its purest form. It is torture and agony. He can't stand it. It's overwhelming him. It's trapped inside him, shaking around like a snow globe. He can only let it out in tiny droplets of tears that trails down his cheeks. He can only let it out in heart wrenching cries to his hyung, "Namjoon! Hyung! Please! Do you hear me!? It's Jungkookie. It's me...will you come back to me? Come back to me, hyung, please!? Namjoon hyung!!!" He hits the door again, but this time with less strength behind them. His entire body is drooping like a flower with no water. Everything making his body feel like it weighs thousands of pounds. He wants to blame Gateway, but there's a part of him that has already realized the truth. This is all his own fault. He let his desire get the best of him in those final moments. He turned around before he was supposed to. And that is why he lost everything. "Aaaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!" Jungkook shrieks on the top of his lungs with every ounce of pain and horror and hatred bottled up inside him. His voice echoes loudly, his scream reverberating deep inside him. Jungkook's face falls slack with exhaustion. His eyes becoming devoid and empty. His throat burns from his endless screaming. Jungkook whimpers quietly before dropping to his knees and curling in on himself. It's over. It's all over.
What did you think? It was definitely a crazy rollercoaster of a story. Jungkook was so close to getting Namjoon back, but he just had to turn around. Sigh. Poor Kookie. I had a lot of fun writing this story. I liked this world that I crafted up and the relationship I built with Jungkook and Namjoon. I hope that you enjoyed reading this as much as I did writing it. Let me know what you think in the comments. While you're at it, please vote, follow me, add this story to your library, and check out my BTS AU Night of Sin. Thank you once again for checking out my one-shot. I hope you have a wonderful rest of your day.
