Hi! I have another one-shot based on a ship that I just wrote for recently. I just love the pairing and the canon work so much. It's for the show/webtoon Sweet Home. I have recently been reading the full webtoon and I just love the dynamics between Hyuk and Hyun. I feel like we didn't get enough of it in the show. That's why I want to do a sort of rewrite of sorts in which Hyunsoo and Eunhyuk actually know each other prior to the whole monster outbreak. I basically want to see how this would change the overall story and also add to it. I also want to play around with some events that happened in the webtoon that didn't happen in the show. It may end up being a full story, but for now it will just be a one-shot. I hope you enjoy it!
"That's the last of the boxes..." Hyuk states as he places a medium sized box on top of another..
"Thanks," Hyun murmurs from where he is setting up his computer on the floor. Hyuk nods his head and adjusts his glasses before walking over to loom over Hyun's slouched form. He watches with a blank expression as Hyun shoves the plug into the wall outlet. "Is your computer so important that you have to set it up first?" Hyuk questions in a dry tone. He glances at the rest of the boxes that are filled with Hyun's belongings. They clutter up the unlived apartment space which only has the basic appliances already set up. "You're one to talk," Hyun responds simply, "If it weren't for me, your best friend would be your damn computer..." Hyuk snorts, but doesn't disagree with the jab taken at him. He moves to the side wall and leans against it with his arms crossed over his chest. He tilts his head down to look at Hyun as he presses the power button. "You know you're not going to have any internet," Hyuk states, "Why bother?"
Hyun ignores Hyuk this time around as the loading screen appears on his screen. He waits patiently, tapping lightly on the cardboard box that he is using as his tabletop for the time being. Eventually, his home screen appears along with a message that simply reads, you are not connected to the internet. Hyun stares at it for a moment, not moving or saying anything. After a minute, his lips curl into a frown and he sprawls out on the ground, staring at the ceiling in defeat. "Told you..." Hyuk says in a sing-song voice.
"Shut up," Hyun huffs. Hyuk smiles slightly before walking over and lowering to the floor. He positions himself beside Hyun with only a couple inches of space between them. Neither speak and the small apartment falls completely silent except for the soft whirring of the air conditioning. With the way they are lying next to one another, one would think that the two have known each other for years. Believe it or not though, the two had only met in person for the first time today.
Before that, they had spoken online for years. They met on a chat site speaking about the newest Maria from the Sky movie. Rather than it being a one off conversation, the two continued to chat. It started off as just messages involving anime, video games or other things of the like. But, slowly deepened into late night conversations of personal struggles and hardships. In a matter of weeks, strangers became close friends. They found comfort in one another even though they only talked through a screen. They were there for one another when no one else was. They could joke around and laugh. They could vent and complain. They could talk about anything at any time. And the other would always understand.
Hyuk was the only one who comforted Hyun when he was getting bullied.
Hyun was the only person that ever called Hyuk his friend.
Hyuk showed Hyun that life was worth fighting for.
Hyun showed Hyuk that it was okay to not have all the answers.
It was thanks to Hyun that Hyuk had a place where he didn't have to worry about responsibility.
It was thanks to Hyuk that Hyun had a place waiting for him to call home.
"Why did I listen to you?" Hyun mutters, turning his head to look at his friend.
"What are you talking about?" Hyuk asks as he meets Hyun's eyes.
"Why did I come live in your apartment complex when I know how shitty it is from how often you complain about it?" Hyun deadpans.
Hyuk pauses for a moment, considering the question, before simply saying, "Cause I'm here."
"Do you want to get punched?" Hyun narrows his eyes as he pushes himself upwards. Hyuk chuckles under his breath as he rises as well. He quickly nudges his friend, forcing him to meet his eyes again. "It's not that bad, Hyun," Hyuk states, "You'll get the Internet back by tomorrow and if you're that desperate...you can just come over and use the computer at my place. The neighbors aren't nosy and won't bother you much. There's a grocery store downstairs so you won't have to worry about running around to get things. Plus, the rent is pretty cheap which will help you save money that we both know you don't have a lot of..."
"Thank you for reminding me how dirt broke I am," Hyun groans.
"Hey, you don't need to tell me, you and I are in the same boat here," Hyuk says simply, "Don't worry too much, Hyun. I'm going to help you figure this out." Hyun blinks a couple of times in surprise. He hadn't expected for his friend to offer to help him. He's already done so much for him by finding this place and helping him move in. Now he's volunteering to help Hyun manage his finances so that he can live on his own. Hyun's brow furrows, "You don't have to do that. You have enough on your plate already."
"I can manage," Hyuk shrugs.
"Hyuk..." Hyun frowns.
"It's fine. I don't mind," Hyuk says, flashing him a sincere expression, "You're my friend. I would do anything for you." Hyun, once again, is thrown off by those words. He can feel heat creep up his neck and he quickly adverts his eyes in embarrassment. "Cheesy bastard..." Hyun mutters. He clears his throat and fiddles with his fingers for a moment before lifting his head again and meeting Hyuk's gaze. "Fine...whatever...just tell me if it gets too much...okay?" Hyun says.
"I always do," Hyuk states, "It's like I always say...we're in this together, Hyun."

Hyun stares at his computer screen with a blank expression on his face. Just as he is starting to enjoy his new life, this has to happen. An outbreak where people are becoming monsters beyond anything that anyone could have imagined. To make matters even better, he is turning into one himself. At this rate, he's going to die before the new Maria movie comes out. He was really looking forward to seeing that with Hyuk.
Hyun shoots up in his seat at the thought of his friend. His eyes wide as he scrambles to grab his computer mouse. With everything going on, it had slipped his mind that his friend was probably facing the same monsters as he was. He could only pray that Hyuk has been able to stay safe. He rapidly clicks his mouse, opening up an online chat that he has with Hyuk. His fingers fly across his keyboard before hitting send.
You better not have died, he writes.
He leans back in his seat. His lips press into a firm line as he anxiously waits for a response. Thankfully, he doesn't have to wait for long as the words CREWCREW is typing appears. Hyun lets out a breath of relief as he scoots closer to his desk. The light of his screen casts a glow over his face.
Do you expect so little of me, Hyuk responds.
The world is going to hell and your personality is still so fucking hopeless, Hyun types out.
You're one to talk, Hyuk states.
Hyun scoffs, Where are you?
First floor with the rest of our lovely neighbors, Hyuk says dryly.
Is that safe, Hyun wonders.
As safe as it can be with everything that's going on. We blocked off the entrances so there's no monsters, Hyuk explains, We're sitting ducks though. We need medicine but going outside would be stupid. We're planning on going by foot to the other floors to find other survivors since the elevators are broken.
Since when do you play hero, Hyun questions.
Since my sister's life is in danger, Hyuk states. Hyun nods to himself as he starts to type out a response. Before he can though, Hyuk sends him another message. And my best friend's is too, Hyuk simply writes. Hyun feels his cheeks start to warm as once again he is thrown off by his friend's words. They're close. He knows that. But it is nice to have that made clear every once in a while. A moment like this in which he knows how much he means to Hyuk. A feeling that he returns. Hyun is pulled from his thoughts by another message from Hyuk appearing on his screen. Are you still in your apartment, it reads, I'll come up and get you.
Hyun's lips press into a firm line. As much as he wants to be with a familiar face during a time like this, he knows that nothing good will come out of this. He refuses to be the reason that Hyuk gets hurt. He would rather die than let that happen. I'm turning, Hyuk, He writes, I'm becoming a monster.
His screen doesn't change. No further messages come from Hyuk. A cold pit forms in his stomach as he imagines what his friend thinks of him now. He wonders if he jumped in shock. If he shut off his computer and erased their whole conversation from his head. If he erased Hyun entirely from his head. He wouldn't blame him for doing it. He is a monster after all. For his safety and for his sister, it's best to just avoid Hyun like the plague.
We're heading to you right now, Hyuk writes, Don't move
Hyun stares at his computer screen with wide eyes. His mouth slowly drops open when he sees the message. He blinks a couple of times and rubs at his eyes, but nothing changes. He isn't imagining this. Hyuk actually wrote back. He responded and he is planning on coming to him. He knows that Hyun is becoming a monster and yet he still wants to come find him. It's insane. Hyun types furiously, Did you not hear what I just said? I'm a monster, Hyuk!
I don't care, Hyuk says.
You should, Hyun scowls.
I said we're in this together, Hyun. I meant that. I don't care what the hell you are. It doesn't change the fact that you're my friend and I refuse to leave you alone during the end of the world, Hyuk sends him in all caps, So stay put and hold on. Don't let the monster take over, Hyun. I need my best friend.
Hyun leans back in his seat and lets out a breath. He can't argue with Hyuk. Now when he gets like this and says stuff like that.
———————
Hyun groans as he peels open his eyes. He jumps in surprise as he is met with the looming faces of the Lee siblings. He lets out a breath as he relaxes into the mattress that he is sprawled on. He isn't entirely sure what happened. The last thing he remembers is having his head crushed in by a monster. He heard voices and footsteps rushing over before he passed out. It must have been Hyuk and the rest of the residents. They were searching for him after all. It was only a matter of time before they found him. And Hyun is glad that they did. "Morning sleeping beauty..." Hyuk says.
"Are you supposed to be my prince?" Hyun scoffs, "Damn...I expected better..."
"Are you sure you haven't already turned into a monster yet?" Hyuk questions with a blank expression, "Your face has gotten uglier since I saw it last..." Hyun lets out a dry laugh as he sits up and fixates his friend with a smug grin. "You love my fucking face," Hyun says, "Come give it a kiss!" He tilts his head to the side and points to his cheek with his finger. Hyuk rolls his eyes as he reaches his hand up and slaps his face. Hyun yelps in surprise before grabbing onto Hyuk's arm and yanking him close. He tries to slap his friend back in retaliation, but Hyuk squirms around making it difficult for him to hit his target. He doesn't give up though as he and Hyuk start rolling around on the mattress with shining eyes. They keep doing this until a loud shriek echoes through the room. "Oh my gosh! Will you two stop doing this whole weird flirting thing!?" Eun screams, "I'm leaving!!!" She whirls around and stomps out of the room. Her shoulders tense. Hyun and Hyuk look at her as she leaves before glancing at one another. Their eyes widen slightly as they see how close they are with one another before quickly shooting apart. They smooth out their clothes and act as if they weren't just wrestling mere moments before. "How are you feeling?" Hyuk clears his throat, trying to change the topic.
"As well as I can be..." Hyun answers, "I can't believe you actually found me..."
"I can't believe you didn't listen to what I said and stayed put," Hyuk shakes his head.
"There were kids in danger..." Hyun murmurs under his breath.
Hyuk nudges his shoulder, "Yeah, yeah, you big softy..."
"They're still up there," Hyun muses.
"We'll get them," Hyuk states, his expression turning serious, "Eventually...right now we have some other things to deal with."
"What do you mean?" Hyun finally lifts his head to look at his friend.
"I told you about how I was with the rest of the residents, yeah?" Hyuk asks, meeting his gaze, "A few were with me when we ran into you. One of them died and the rest...they saw you heal."
"Oh..." Hyun breathes. He falls silent. His lips purse into a firm line. He feels bad for costing another person their life, but even his guilt pales in comparison to his anxiety. The residents must hate him now. An image of Jisu pointing her bat at him flashes through his mind. He doesn't doubt that the rest of the residents would be quick to brandish their own makeshift weapons against him as well. Hyuk clearly has the same thoughts as he says, "I'm worried what they'll do. If only they hadn't seen you...things would have been fine."
"They would still find out eventually regardless," Hyun sighs.
"Not if I had a say in it," Hyuk huffs.
"Were you planning on keeping it a secret?" Hyun asks.
"Weren't you?" Hyuk responds with a question of his own. Hyun sighs as he tugs at his sweatshirt sleeve. He adjusts his position on the mattress before stating in a stiff tone, "I told you that it wasn't a good idea to come for me."
"And I told you that I don't care what you think," Hyuk states.
"Hyuk..." Hyun frowns.
"Hyun," Hyuk states. The friends stare at one another. Neither saying a single word. The room becomes quiet as the two look into each other's eyes. Their expressions remain fairly neutral, but their eyes say more than enough. They are riddled with concern and exhaustion. They both think too much and try too hard to make the other feel better. After a couple of moments of just communicating with their eyes, Hyuk rises to his feet and clears his throat. "Listen...the residents can say or do whatever the hell they want, but I'm not going to let them kick you out," Hyuk says, "I brought you here and I'm going to fight to make sure that doesn't change."
"You don't need to," Hyun shakes his head, "I can just leave. I don't want to hurt anyone."
"You won't," Hyuk states, "You're still human, Hyun."
"What happens when I won't be?" Hyun asks.
"We'll cross that road when we get to it," Hyuk shrugs nonchalantly. His face is serious though, making it more than clear that this isn't up for debate. Hyun finds himself once again in a position where he is unable to argue against his friend. He is surprised to also find himself not wanting to either. Although he should be worried, he is comforted by the fact that Hyuk is sticking by his side. Not many others have done that for Hyun and he is more than grateful. He trusts Hyuk. Things will be okay. Or as okay as they can be. "Fine..." Hyun says as he stands up as well and walks closer to his friend, "I don't know how much of a fight you're going to be able to put up though. You're more of a geek than some knight in shining armor." Hyuk rolls his eyes and sticks his hands in his pockets. He starts to walk towards the door, not even bothering to tell Hyun to follow him. He knows that he will. A fact that is confirmed as the other throws his arm around his shoulders. The two walk out of the room side by side, ready to brave whatever craziness is thrown their way.
And that is where we will end things for now. I had a lot of fun writing this. I already have ideas for how other parts of this story will play out, but that depends on what you all think. Would you like to see this developed into a full-length story or maybe multiple one-shots. Please let me know! Also, please vote, follow me, add this story to your library and check out my other Hyun x Hyuk OS in this book. Thank you again for reading and I hope you have a great rest of your day!
