Reason We Died
It's a Halloween one-shot! Paranormal activity. I hope that you like it. I wrote this at 12 am, so please don't be too harsh. I'll tell you this much about the one-shot, remember how you always joke around with your friends and say that you'll haunt them when you die. Well, that's happening to one of the members.
Jimin sighs as walks back home. It was just his luck. His car had broken down and he spent hours calling places to come give him a hand. In the end, no one was able to help him. It is Halloween night, so apparently, all the tow truck companies closed early. It's Halloween, not Christmas, who the hell closes early on Halloween night. It's not even a real holiday! That's how Jimin ended up walking back to his apartment in the middle of the night. All of the trick or treaters are already back home. There is a bunch of candy all over the streets. It's pretty late and the only thing lighting up the streets are the lamps along the sidewalk. Jimin sighs as he continues his way back home. He didn't live far, but tonight it seemed to be taking him a lot longer to get home. He looks around as he passes by an old restaurant. It reminds him of the place that his cousin used to own. He wonders what the old place looks like now, especially since it had to be sold off when his cousin passed away. Suddenly, laughter begins to echo down the empty street. Jimin frowns as he looks around for the source of the laughter. It continues to increase in sound and pitch. It's a familiar laugh as well, one that Jimin has heard before. Jimin glances behind him and he notices someone standing in front of the restaurant. This person is laughing with a smirk on his face. Jimin freezes and turns to face him. This man continues to laugh as he walks up to Jimin. As he does so, Jimin is able to get a better look at his face. His body tenses as he realizes why the laughter sounded familiar, "Jin hyung."
"Hi there, Jimin-ah," Jin says laughing.
Jimin frowns, "How is it that you're here?"
"Why would you ask such a thing? You don't want to see your dear old cousin," Jin states. Jimin doesn't say anything and glances at his 'cousin'. He looks different than before. He seems more transparent, as if he isn't really here. "Nothing to say to me Jimin-ah?" Jin asks, "We haven't talked since...I'd say five or six years ago."
Jimin looks at Jin, "I-I didn't expect to see you again, Jin. You died. How is it that you're here?"
"Way to put it bluntly, Jimin-ah. Well, I wanted to see you. I missed you," Jin states, "I'm here cause I want to be."
"I have a feeling that you don't just wanted to say hello," Jimin says as he starts walking again. He hopes that Jin leaves him alone, if he even is Jin that is. Of course, Jin follows him and continues to talk. "You're right. I was hoping to talk about the incident. The reason that I died..." Jin says looking at Jimin. Jimin bites the inside of his mouth and looks at the floor. "Do you remember how I died, Jimin-ah? Do you remember being the reason I died at such a young age? Do you remember not doing anything to save your own cousin? Your own flesh and blood," Jin spats.
Jimin shakes his head, "I'm sorry. It wasn't my fault. I didn't know. I didn't think you would get hurt."
"Well, I did get hurt," Jin says dryly, "And I have a feeling that it is your fault. Are you sure you're not messing up the story. I think it went something like this, you invited me over to try some food that you had made."
Jimin thinks back to that day. He and his cousin have always been close. They were more like brothers then cousins. When Jimin started college, he had asked his cousin to teach him to cook some meals. He practiced all the time, he wanted to impress his cousin more than anything. Jin was an amazing chef and Jimin wanted to make good food for him. He worked hard on perfecting Jin's favorite fish dish for weeks. When he finally had it down, he invited Jin over to try some. Jin came, excited to try Jimin's fish. Everything was going well. Jin was really impressed with how at ease Jimin looked while preparing the fish. Things started to go south when the meal was actually served. Jimin wanted to feed a piece of the fish to Jin. Jin, of course, didn't say no and just opened his mouth. Next thing you know, he was choking. Apparently, Jimin didn't notice a bone within the fish meat. Jin gripped the sides of his throat and his face turned red. Jimin froze, not knowing what to do. It wasn't until Jin collapsed on the floor and stopped wheezing, did Jimin do anything.
"You fed me a bone. That bone got stuck in my throat and I couldn't breathe. You fed me death," Jin glares at Jimin.
Jimin avoids eye contact as he walks a bit faster, "I didn't know about the bone. I didn't want you to get hurt."
"Yet, you did nothing to stop the pain. No heimlich. No call to 911. Nothing. You just stood there like a statue while I struggled to breathe. It wasn't until I actually died, did you do anything. Of course, it was too late. I was long gone by the time the ambulances got here. And of course, you weren't blamed for my death. It was only an accident. I just wasn't careful enough. I wasn't paying attention to what I was eating..." Jin huffs.
Jimin shivers, "I'm sorry, I didn't do anything sooner. What do you want from me? I can't change what happened."
"No, I guess not, but you'll pay for what you did. I'm not the only one that wishes to talk to you," Jin states.
Jimin gives him a confused look, "What do you mean by that?" As he says this, he walks pass a library. He used to go this this library all the time with one of his classmates. They would study together and hang out together. It was also the place where his classmate took his last breath. Jimin glances at the library with a sad look on his face. This look changes to one of shock when he sees his old friend sitting on the staircase leading up to the library. His friends rises and makes his way over to him. "Hello, Minnie. You miss me?" Hoseok states with a weird smile on his face. His appearance resembles Jin's and it seems like he wants something from Jimin as well. "H-Hoseok hyung. Hi. It's been a while, how are you?" Jimin say his voice shaking a little.
Hoseok grins, "I'm doing pretty well. Especially since I ran into an old classmate of mine. How's life been, after school? You doing well?"
Jimin nods, "Y-yeah, I am."
"That's good. I'm happy for you. I wish I could say the same about myself," Hoseok says, "But, as you can see things haven't been the same since that day at the library. You always were a bit clumsy, Minnie. I guess I never expected for you to knock over a bunch of bookshelves. I never would've imagined them all falling on me either."
Jimin lets out a small breath. It was a rainy day and the two of them had decided to hang out at the library. They had brought all of their books and a bunch of snacks. They were working hard for a few hours, getting done with their homework. They didn't get distracted and their sole focus was on finishing their assignments. They ate snacks while they worked and helped out one another if there was a difficult problem. After a while, Jimin got up to take a break. He walked to one of the bookshelves to look at something. Hoseok followed looking at some non-fiction reads. Jimin reached out for a book and took it off the shelf. He leaned against the bookshelf as he flipped through the pages. He had no way of knowing that the shelves weren't very balanced. The second he stopped leaning the shelf started to tip over. And then the next shelf. And the next. This continued all the way to the bookshelf that Hoseok stood in front of. The books and shelves fell on top of him. The weight of it all pushed down on Hoseok's lungs. He wheezed as he tried to breathe. The weight made it difficult for him to move and he felt very uncomfortable. Jimin was in shock at the mess that he had just made. He didn't even realize that this accident had trapped his friend underneath piles of books and shelves. He didn't even find out until an hour later that Hoseok died because of it.
Jimin looks at his old classmate, "I didn't mean to do that. It was an accident. I didn't know you were there. I never wanted anything bad to happen to you. You were one of my closest friends."
"Sure, you've made a bunch of mistakes, Minnie. So, many accidents. First the fish bone and now the bookshelves. You've hurt a lot more people. Were those all accidents too?" Hoseok says standing beside Jin.
"W-what? What are you talking about? I never told you-" Jimin starts only to be interrupted by the sound of a creaking swing. Jimin looks to his left and his eyes widen. The old playground, the one that he and his brother would go to all the time. He stares at the swing that sways because of the wind. Soon enough, a figure appears on the swing. Jimin gapes as he recognizes the figure's face. "Jimin hyung...." Jungkook says looking at the ground.
"Jungkookie..." Jimin whispers. Jungkook stops swinging and walks up to his older brother. "Do you miss me, Jimin-ssi? Do you remember me? Do you remember what you did to me?" Jungkook asks.
Jimin blinks a couple of times and nods his head slowly. A few years back, he had taken Jungkook to the park. Jungkook was his responsibility for the day and he promised to look after him. They were having fun, running around and sliding on the slides. The sun was out and there wasn't a single cloud in the sky. Jungkook had went to go get a drink from the water fountain. While Jimin waited for his younger brother to return, he pushed the swing. He pushed it hard and watched as it arced through the air. He didn't even notice Jungkook running over to him. In the next few seconds, everything seemed to be moving in slow motion. The swing made contact with Jungkook's head. There was blood and Jungkook fell to the ground. Jimin acted immediately, calling for help. He rushed over to his fallen brother and cradled his head. They took Jungkook to the hospital, but it was too late. The brain damage caused by the swing was too much for the young boy to take. Jungkook coughs and brings Jimin's focus back to what is happening now. "Jungkookie. I never wanted to hurt you. I'm your hyung, I love you with all that is in me," Jimin says, "I didn't know that you were coming. If I did, I would've stopped the swing from moving."
Jungkook sighs, "You hurt me, hyung. I'll never know if you could've stopped the swing. You didn't then and I died. I lost my life. I lost the life that I had barley even began to live. You took me away from eomma and appa and Namjoon hyung."
"I never wanted to take anything from you. You had so much potential. You would've been an amazing young man. You always were special," Jimin says his hands shaking, "If I had been more aware of my surroundings, I could have saved you. None of this would have happened."
Jungkook scoffs, "Always oblivious, Jimin-ssi. You really should pay more attention. You've hurt others because of how non-attentive you are." Jungkook moves to stand beside the other two. Jimin shakes his head, this had to be a dream. There is no way that this is happening. What were they? Ghosts? No, they can't be. Jimin looks up and continues to walk back to his home. He sees a light ahead of him flicker. Every time it lights up, he sees a shadowy figure. "Jimin. Don't tell me you don't recognize me. We used to see each other all the time," the figure mutters as the lamp blinks back to life.
Jimin shakes his head, "Y-you're my neighbor. My old neighbor."
"Oh, so you do remember. What's my name, Jimin? Don't tell me that you forgot the name of the man you nudged down the staircase," the figure says venom dripping from his mouth, "What's my name? I want to hear you say it."
Jimin bites his lower lip and glances at the figure, "Y-you're Y-yoongi. I'm sorry for what I did. I-I didn't know that you were there. I should've noticed that you were standing there."
Jimin used to live in this small apartment during his college years. He had this grumpy, but very talented next door neighbor. His name was Yoongi. They weren't the best of friends, but they didn't hate each other. They helped one another out at times. They were friendly with one another. They acted like normal neighbors would. They lived on the third level of the apartment building. The elevator was broken often and when it was working it made weird noises. The two of them usually avoided the elevator whenever they could. They usually walked down the stairs with one another every day. One day, Yoongi was standing by the stairs, waiting for Jimin. He had a bunch of boxes in his hands that he was taking to the post office. There was a lot of them and it pretty much covered his face from view. Jimin walked out of his apartment with his phone next to his ear. He seemed to be having a pretty serious argument with someone. He didn't even notice Yoongi waiting for him. He slammed his apartment door shut and quickly pushed past the person standing near the staircase. Jimin was so upset, he didn't even notice how hard that he had nudged the person. Yoongi didn't have the best balance, but his coordination was even worse with a bunch of boxes in his hands. When Jimin, pushed by him, he lost his balance. He went tumbling down the staircase. He didn't stop until he reached the first floor. He tumbled right by Jimin, who stood there staring in shock as someone rolled down the stairs. Jimin ran down the rest of the steps and rushed to see who fell. He was shocked to see his neighbor, his head bent in a weird position.
"I died because you pushed me. You knew that we always walked down the stairs together. You should've known that was me," Yoongi spat, "Even if you hadn't known who it was. You never should have pushed me like that, no matter how much of a rush you were in."
"Yoongi, I promise I didn't mean too. It was an accident. Please forgive me," Jimin begs, "I was just upset about something. I didn't mean to cause you any harm.
Yoongi shakes his head and moves next to the others, "Just because you were angry, doesn't give you permission to be harsh with others. You don't deserve forgiveness, Jimin. You've done too much to too many people. Innocent people, who would still be alive if it weren't for you." Jimin shakes his head and glances at the four 'people' following him. What could they want with him? He had said he was sorry. He never wished ill will on any of them. Could they not move on or something? Jimin sighs as he reaches a crosswalk. He takes in an intake of breath as he recognizes where he is. This is where his best friend died. He watched it happen before his very eyes. This wasn't his fault though. He had nothing to do with the out of control driver. The light was red. It had nothing to do with Jimin, yet standing in the middle of the crosswalk is another 'person'. Jimin looks both ways before walking along the crosswalk. The figure walks next to him, "This is just like old times. Isn't it, Jiminie?" Taehyung says with a grin.
Jimin nods his head slowly, "Um, yes. Taehyung, what are you doing here? You can't be blaming me for your death too. I had nothing to do with it."
Taehyung chuckles, "Are you sure about that, Jiminie? Do you not remember why I was crossing the crosswalk? It was to get to you..."
Jimin's eyes widen, no, it couldn't be his fault. Jimin and Taehyung were meeting up to go get some lunch. Jimin had spotted Taehyung from across the street and was about to head over to where he was. Taehyung shook his head and called out to him, telling him to wait there. Taehyung waited until the light changed to show a white figure walking, before crossing the street. He had a big smile on his face and his arms swayed as he walked. In the next three seconds, the entire world slowed once again. A car rammed right into Taehyung. He fell to the ground instantly. Jimin yelled out in shock and rushed over to his fallen friend. He has known Taehyung since they were kids. They've been best friends for as long as he could remember. Taehyung lay on the ground, blood pooling from his head and chest. The driver was punished for killing Taehyung, but, no amount of justice would bring back his best friend.
"I-I never thought of it that way. I didn't think you would get hurt, Tae. I had no idea that driver would do something like that, run through a red light I mean," Jimin states as he gets closer to his house.
Taehyung clicks his tongue to the roof of his mouth, "Jiminie, Jiminie. Always putting the blame on others. How come you can never accept that you make a mess out of everything?"
"This wasn't my fault. Really. I was going to cross the crosswalk to get to you. The only reason I didn't was because you told me to wait there," Jimin cries.
Taehyung shake his head, "So, it was my fault then. The reason I'm like this is because of my own accord. I'm the one to blame for my death. I shouldn't have been kind. Been a good friend. I should've just let you cross the street. Maybe, then you would be dead. And not me." He stands beside the rest of the group. Jimin frowns, what was this? Gang up against Jimin day? He meant no harm. These 'people' have been following him for a while now. Do they plan on doing something? Something to him? Jimin wipes his hands on his pants, his palms a tad bit sweaty. He is nearly to his house, he lets out a tiny breath. Maybe if he walks into his house, they would all leave him alone. Jimin continues to walk, this time a bit faster. His goal being his home. He is so focused he doesn't notice his garage door opening. As he approaches his house, his entire body tenses. Standing in the doorway of the garage is none other than his older brother. "Hi, Chim. I think it's time we've had a little chat. The last time we had one of those, one of us ended up dying. Maybe this time, it'll end a bit differently," Namjoon says with a motion of his hand. Jimin gulps as he takes a step closer to his 'brother'. "Hyung. What is going on here? What do you all want from me?" Jimin asks.
"Oh, you'll see very soon, Jimin. You just need to wait," Namjoon says, "Now, where was I. Oh, yes. I've been a good hyung to you. I took care of you after mom and dad died. I looked after you, yet you've never really appreciated it. You always had to pick a fight with me. Complaining about this and that. I just wanted what was best for you."
Jimin nods, "I know that, h-hyung. I'm sorry if it seemed like I wasn't being thankful. I really appreciate all that you did for me."
"You have a funny way of showing it," Namjoon spat, "I understood at first. You had just lost Jungkook and mom and dad. Then, it got to the point where you were grumpy all the time. Did you ever once realize that maybe I was in pain too? Probably not, you were always too focused on your own stupid little issues. The world doesn't revolve around you, Jimin."
Jimin bites the side of his cheek, "I know that, hyung. I'm sorry for being such a brat."
"You were more than a brat. You were a murderer," Namjoon rolls his eyes, "Maybe you should apologize for killing me."
Jimin opens his mouth and then close it again. Jimin had wanted to go out with a group of friends one night. Of course, he needed the car. Namjoon had said no, not because he didn't want Jimin to go out, but because the car needed to be repaired. Namjoon was working on the repairs when Jimin entered the garage. He wasn't taking no for an answer. He began pushing Namjoon. He asked why and complained about how he couldn't tell him what to do. He yelled that he was old enough to make his own decisions. He didn't need someone like Namjoon, to act like his parent. This continued for a while, before Namjoon snapped. He told him that if he didn't like the ways things worked, he could just live out on the streets. Jimin was angry and shut the garage door as he left. He left in a huff, not really caring about his brother or what he was doing. Namjoon continued to work in the closed off space. The car remained idling and the carbon monoxide was being released into the air at a steady rate. It wasn't until a few hours later, did Jimin return. He had calmed down and wanted to apologize to Namjoon. When he opened the garage, he found Namjoon near the back door. His hand near the door handle. He had inhaled too much carbon monoxide and had died from the odorless gas.
"Nothing? Are you not sorry for causing the death of you're older brother?" Namjoon asks.
Jimin shakes his head, "I'm sorry, hyung. I'm sorry all of you. I never wanted any of you to get hurt. I didn't want any of you to die. Please, accept my forgiveness. Please. I am really sorry." Namjoon scoffs as he walks over to stand beside the rest of the group. The entire group speaks at the same time, "No. You are not forgiven. We were all wrongfully killed. We all died because of you, Jimin. You have caused pain that wasn't deserved. You will pay for what you have done."
"What!? No...this has to be some joke. You guys wouldn't actually hurt me. Y-you aren't the vengeful type," Jimin says his voice wavering.
They all speak at once, "You don't know us very well, do you Jimin? You let us choke, suffocate, get crushed, break our necks, suffer a head injury, get run over by a car, and die from poisoning. You will go through the same torture we did. You will join us in hell. You will rot for the pain you have caused us all."
"Guys. Come on. I'm your friend. Your family. You can't do this," Jimin says backing up and towards his house.
The dead boys all look at one another before reaching out and taking ahold of Jimin, "Yes, we can. You did it to us. We will now do it to you." Jimin tried to run away from their grip, but failed. He shivers as the coldness from their hands reaches his body. He cries for help and begs for them not to hurt him. The group ignore him and pull him closer to them. "Please! Don't do this! I never did anything to you! I can't die! I don't deserve to die!!!" Jimin shrieks as they all circle around him. They all give Jimin a murderous glare. Jimin continues to yell out as a circle appears around him. "No! No! Stop this please! I still have things I want to do! Please, have mercy!" Jimin exclaims. The figures all ignore him and only watch as Jimin flails around. They walk closer to him, muttering nonsense words. He continues to scream as something comes flying at his head. He groans as a million bookshelves and books fall on top of him. He starts to lose focus as he falls down a flight of stairs and gets rammed on by a car. He doesn't even notice when a bone gets lodged into his throat or carbon monoxide begins to trickle into his lungs. The world starts to bleed away. Jimin's eyes start to have a hazy look over them. His body lays limp on the floor. The group only smirks as they stare at Jimin.
