Even If You Don't Remember

Hello everyone. How are you all doing? My new one-shot is for a new ship that is becoming a quick favorite of mine. It's Kamjay! That is Kamden and Jay from Boys Planet. I just love their friendship and their bond with one another. I just had to write something about them. I asked a couple of weeks ago for my fellow Kamjay shippers to recommend some story ideas and they came through. They gave me a lot of ideas that I am hoping to also write in the future. For today though, I am focusing on this idea of Kamden protecting Jay. There is more to the suggestion than that, but I don't want to spoil the one-shot. It'll be more enjoyable to read and find out. With that said, let's get into it!

Kamden shuffles back and forth as he waits. His arms hanging loosely at his sides. His head tilts down, staring at the ground. He is garbed in a white shirt and a washed out black jacket. He reaches into his pocket and pulls out his phone. He presses the button on the side and the screen lights up. He looks at the time before sighing and pocketing his device. He leans against the gray concrete archway before turning his head to look at the apartment complex behind him.

He nods when he sees a familiar figure through the glass walls of the foyer, making his way towards the door. "Jay..." Kamden murmurs under his breath as he watches the young man exit the apartment and start to walk in his direction. Jay's dark brown hair is pushed back slightly by dark blue headphones. He wears an oversized white t-shirt with the sleeves slightly bunched up. A silver necklace hangs around his neck. A black canvas bag is thrown over his shoulder that matches the color of his jeans. He hums under his breath as he passes by the archway and Kamden as if neither is even there.

Jay turns and begins to walk down the sidewalk. A soft smile on his face and the sun making his eyes light up with life. Kamden watches him with an unreadable expression on his face. His chest aching as he stares at the man as he moves further away.

"Kamden!" Jay shouted with a wide smile on his face. He rushed forward from the wide field that he was bent down in mere moments before. His hair was a tousled mess and blades of grass stuck to his clothes. They stuck out like a sore thumb against the dark black shade of his coat. The silver rivets buttoning the outfit up shined in the bright sun that is framed by a bright blue sky. He walked in big steps across a dusty dirt field to where Kamden stood in the shade of a massive tree. His exposed arms are tucked neatly behind his back. His sleeveless coat was similar to Jay's own, except there is a thick belt keeping it wrapped around his chest. His eyes met the happy man approaching him before trailing down to look at what he held in his hands. A bundle of white flowers tied together with a long blade of grass. "Those are very nice, Your Highness," Kamden murmured.

"Come on, Kam," Jay whined, "We're outside. There's no one here..."

"Those are very nice, Jay," Kamden repeated. Jay sighed, but let the other be. He took a few steps closer to the other. An action that made Kamden's eyes widen. Jay smiles at him before slipping the bouquet through Kamden's belt. "They're for you," Jay states simply.

"M-me?" Kamden stuttered looking between the bouquet and Jay.

Jay hummed, "To thank you for the flowers you got for me..."

"You...you remember those?" Kamden said breathlessly.

"Of course, I do," Jay says. Kamden fell silent, not knowing what to say. Jay seemed unbothered by it though as his gaze slowly drifts to the tree that covers them from the sun. He began to walk over to it. Kamden watched him for a moment before breaking into a jog to catch up. By the time he did, Jay was already sitting on a low hanging branch. He patted the spot beside him. Kamden hesitated for a moment, but eventually relented. He moved to sit beside Jay, who leaned against the trunk of the tree nonchalantly. Kamden looked at him with a curious expression, "Jay?"

"Hm?" Jay hummed.

"What are we doing out here?" Kamden asked.

"Nothing," Jay answered.

"Nothing?" Kamden's brow furrowed.

"Yup! Isn't it nice?" Jay exclaims. A lazy grin spread across his face. He turned just slightly to look at Kamden with eyes that shine brightly. Kamden blinked in surprise before quickly forcing his head away. He settled his gaze to the ground, trying to calm his racing heart. He could hear Jay shifting around beside him, but he did his best to keep his eyes locked on the ground. After a couple minutes of silence though, he had to check on the prince.

Jay had turned around so that his back was now completely against the trunk of the tree. One of his legs was bent up while the other laid out along the branch. His head was tilted upwards, staring at the little rays of light peeking through the tapestry of leaves. His expression is melancholy. A shaky smile on his face. His eyes squeezing shut and a whisper of a breath escaping his lips. "Are you okay?" Kamden questioned in a concerned tone.

"Yeah..." Jay murmured, "I just miss them..." Kamden nodded his head in understanding. He didn't speak after that, knowing that Jay would prefer the silence over anything else. He did, though, shift a tad bit closer to the prince, the drooping leaves of the tree they sat in covering them enough to give Kamden a small bit of confidence. "They would want me to be happy though," Jay said, "So, I'm going to smile so brightly that they can see it." He slowly tilted his head down and looked Kamden right in the eyes. This time Kamden matched Jay's gaze. "Smile for yourself too, okay?" Kamden said in a steady tone. Jay let out an amused breath before nodding his head.

Kamden leans back in his seat in the corner of the cafe. Thankfully, there aren't that many people around, but there is still enough for him to be on edge. He glances at Jay, who is sitting on the other side of the store on a plush cushion. A small circle table is in front of him. He sips from a light green drink with one hand. His phone in the other. He places his drink down before bringing his other hand to his device and tapping away at the screen. Kamden watches as the edges of his lips begin to turn up, but before he can see a full smile, a figure dressed in business attire passes by. He frowns as his eyes dart up to look at the person. His eyes narrow as he scans over his face. Deep set wrinkles press into the skin around the passerby's eyes. Wire rimmed glasses sit on his nose and the whisper of an unshaved mustache is on his upper lip. Kamden relaxes a bit after observing him for a second longer.

He starts to bring his attention back to Jay, but stops when the sound of the bell by the door rings. Kamden's eyes immediately lock onto the customer. It's a young woman. She is dressed in a leather jacket with hair tied into a high ponytail. She sends a wave of worry through Kamden's body. His hands clench into fists. He watches as she moves towards the barista. Just like before, Kamden observes her face with scrutiny. Her cherry red lips. The soft curve of her nose. The thick eyelashes. Kamden lets out a breath, "Mortal..." He nods his head as he tears his gaze away from her and back to Jay, who continues to tap at his phone, none the wiser to the happenings around him.

———————

"Over here!" Kamden hissed from where he sat on a small stool. He was tucked into the back corner, shielded by racks holding a wide assortment of weapons. He leaned against the wooden wall where small streams of sunlight pass through. Jay crept inside of the weapons shed with his body curled up slightly. He looked left and right before quietly closing the door. He let out a breath before scurrying over to Kamden. A smile appears on his face when he sees the small table set up with two plates of steaming hot flapjacks. "Wah! Na Doobin!" Jay exclaimed as he lowered into the stool beside Kamden, "You always impress me!"

"Shut up," Kamden muttered, his face tinged slightly pink, "I just got pancakes from the kitchens. It's no big deal." He picks up his fork and immediately starts to use it to slice his pancakes into nice triangle shapes. "I think it is," Jay smiled, "I really needed this." Kamden froze for a moment and looked up at the other. His own lips curled up a bit before he tilted his head down again. "I hope that you enjoy it," He murmured as he reached for the syrup. Jay hummed under his breath as he grabbed his own fork. He quickly cut a piece out before taking the syrup from Kamden and pouring a bit over it. He bit into it and his face contorted with pleasure. He began to eat more of the pancakes with more gusto after each and every bite. "These are so good!" Jay beamed, turning to look at Kamden, "Matthew is going to be so jealous."

Kamden met his gaze as if he was about to say something, but no words came from his mouth. His eyes flicked down to stare at Jay's lips. Jay was quick to notice where his friend's eyes were directed. His body tensed and his heart skipped a beat in his chest. He didn't speak, not mad at Kamden for staring but very curious about what he is looking at and what he plans on doing. Thankfully, Kamden was quick to answer Jay's question, but not with words. He reached his hand out and brought it towards the other's mouth. His fingers curled a bit as they brushed against the corner of Jay's lips and then again in the very center. Jay's eyes crossed as he looked down at Kamden's finger as it ran along his skin. The touch sent sparks through his entire body. His entire body stayed frozen until Kamden slowly moved his hand away. It was not until then did Kamden begin to realize what he had just done. His eyes widened and he started to apologize. Jay was quick to cut him off though, "Thanks..."

Kamden blinked a couple of times in surprise before answering, "No problem." The two fell silent after that. Their eyes were anywhere but on each other. Their hands slowly and awkwardly would eat their pancakes in complete silence. It wasn't until they had almost cleared their plates did Kamden break the silence. "We have to go back soon," Kamden stated, "They're going to notice we left."

"We will," Jay said in a serious tone before letting out a sigh, "I just needed a break...you know? A chance to walk away from it all."

"Is it too much for you to handle?" Kamden asked, his face contorting with concern.

"Even if it is, it's not like I can complain," Jay shrugged, "I'm needed in this fight. Everyone is looking to me to lead. To bring about that future that my parents dreamed of..." His eyes became distant as he said those words. It's a look that Kamden was used to. He had seen it more often than not as of late. It made sense. With things picking up, it was only a matter of time before it caught up to Jay. Still, Kamden wished he could do something to alleviate the stress that is weighing heavily on his friend. "Jay..." Kamden murmured.

"I'm okay," Jay said, "Really."

"I'm here for you if you want to talk," Kamden said.

"I know," Jay looked over, his eyes shining brightly, "If it weren't for you, I don't think I could deal with any of this. When you're by my side, Kam, all my worries fade away..."

———————

Kamden pretends to look at some crackers near the end of the aisle. Near the middle of that same aisle is Jay, who is holding a bright red basket in his hands. It's filled with various fresh fruits and veggies as well as some chips. He is currently observing cans of soup and trying to decide which one to get. A young boy and his mother stand beside Jay. Well, the mother does, the child is racing up and down the aisle impatiently. His arms are stretched outwards, brushing against the cans and rattling them slightly. Kamden knows that this is a mess waiting to happen, but he doesn't bother to say a word. It's not like they would see him anyway.

Bang! Bang! Bang! Just as he had expected, an entire row of cans drops to the floor one after another. Thankfully, they all remain intact, but the loud noise is more than enough to startle the child, who immediately starts to cry. He rushes over to his mother's side, gripping onto her leg and hiding his face. His mother runs his hand up and down his back, doing his best to soothe her son while also bending down to pick up the cans.

"Let me help," Jay says. He lowers to the ground and grabs the cans. He then reaches up and begins to place them back on the shelf. Soon all except for one has been returned to their homes. Jay picks up the last one and shuffles closer to the sniffling boy. "Hi..." Jay says in a quiet tone, "My name is Jay. What's yours?"

"Hajoon," The boy answers while rubbing his eyes.

"Nice to meet you, Hajoon," Jay says, "You must feel bad for making a mess." The boy nods his head. His hands gripping tighter around his mother's shirt and his eyes becoming watery once again. "It's okay," Jay says, "We all make mistakes sometimes. We just need to make sure to fix it and learn from it." He lifts the can up and wiggles it in the air. The boy stares at it for a moment before slowly unlatching from his mother's side. He reaches his hand out to take it from Jay. He looks at it for a second before returning it to the shelf. "Now take a step back," Jay states, "And look..." The boy quickly heeds his words. His eyes widen and a smile begins to spread on his face. "It's like nothing even happened," The boy murmurs.

"Yup," Jay nods.

"Thank you, hyung," The boy chirps.

"You're welcome, kiddo," Jay smiles, "No more running around while eomma's shopping, okay?" The boy nods his head enthusiastically. Jay reaches his hand out to ruffle his hair. He then pushes himself up and looks at the mother, who mouths thank you to him. Jay bows to her respectfully before waving at the boy and making his way towards another aisle. Kamden watches as he walks. His lips curling up as he replays the moment in his mind. "You haven't changed, Jay," Kamden muses to himself.

And then, he feels it.

Kamden's lips press into a firm line and he whips his head to the side. His eyes narrow as he catches the flash of white move in the same direction as Jay.

———————

Jay walked through the annex leading towards the grand hall where the High Court of Heaven is waiting for him. Kamden trailed behind him along with Matthew. The two converse to one another quietly. Anyone from afar would have assumed it was official business, but Jay knew better. He could hear the soft snickers and the light tone of their voices. It was nice. "You're just a big bird!" A little girl in a black dress exclaimed.

A boy around the same age in a white t-shirt stood beside her with a red face, "And you're a dirty slob!" Jay's lips pressed into a firm line as he spotted two young children arguing. The boy gripped a purple and blue item in his hand while the girl eyed it with narrowed lids. Jay didn't hesitate to walk over to the young Angel and Demon. Kamden and Matthew rushed to keep up with him, not even bothering to try to stop him. As Jay neared the arguing children, he bent down so that he was eye level with them. "Hey, hey..." He spoke calmly, "What's with all the yelling?"

"Your Highness!" The two exclaimed as they looked at him. Their bodies instantly bent into a full bow. Jay's eyes widened at the display and he quickly reached his arms out to pat the two. "There's no need for that," Jay said, "The two of you can just call me Jay."

"R-really?" The boy stuttered.

"Yup," Jay nodded, "What are your names?"

"Haneul," The boy answered.

"Bora," The girl stated.

"Nice to meet you," Jay said before questioning, "Can you tell me why you were fighting?"

"He took my bubble wand!" Bora shouted.

"Only cause demons don't play with bubbles!" Haneul said matter-of-factly.

"How do you know what demons play with?!" Bora exclaimed, her arms flailing left and right.

Haneul retorted proudly, "I'm an Angel!"

"So!?" Bora said in a rather snarky tone, "That doesn't make you the smartest!"

"Haneul...Bora..." Jay said, stopping the two from their bickering, "The two of you should be playing together as friends, not fighting."

"Angels and demons can't be friends," Haneul said simply. Jay frowned at those words. He had long since become accustomed to those exact statements said by adult Angels and Demons, but it was upsetting to hear it from children. He could only hope that he would be able to change that mindset for good. "That's not true at all," Jay said, "Look...these are my friends. Kamden is a Demon and Matthew is an Angel. And you know that I'm half Angel and half Demon. The three of us are best friends. We get along really well."

"But, we've hated each other since forever!" Bora eyes widened, "Can we really be friends?"

"I think so," Jay smiled softly, "You see...Angels and Demons are more alike than you think. I think that the two of you have a lot in common. You both like bubbles, don't you? Why don't you try playing together?" The children hesitated for a moment, but when Jay flashed them a small thumbs up, they tried to heed his words. Haneul revealed the bubble wand and passed it back to Bora. The young demon smiled and said thank you before beginning to blow it. Haneul watched with wide eyes as bubbles began to float through the air. He looked back and forth between them and Bora, as if asking for permission. The young demon nodded her head and Haneul moved instantly. He popped the bubbles floating around him one after another. When most had disappeared, he quickly called out for more. Bora was more than happy to comply. A wide smile on her face as she continued to play.

Jay watched them with a fond expression on his face before slowly rising up again. "Are you ready to go?" Kamden asked as he moved to stand beside him.

"Yes, let's not keep the high courts waiting," Jay nodded his head before continuing to walk.

———————

Kamden grits his teeth as he looks around for the being who was trailing after Jay. Anxiety and desperation bubble inside of his chest. His hands clench into tight fists. When he doesn't spot the figure in white, he brings his attention back to Jay. The young man has his headphones back on as he calmly walks through the park. Thankfully, there is a good number of people around, so whoever decided to follow Jay would definitely not pull anything there.

It still does little to alleviate the worry that has settled over Kamden's heart. He would much rather Jay stay inside, but he knows that there was a very small chance of that ever happening. Kamden lets out a sigh. His eyes flicking to the ground for a second before quickly looking back up to check on Jay.

The young man has come to a stop in front of a small group of people who form a clustered circle. They all stare at a young woman who sits on the bench with a guitar on her lap. A young man sits next to her with a mic. The two sing together with smiles on their faces. The soft trills of their voices blend together into a sweet melody that sends chills across Kamden's skin. His legs move on their own as he steps closer to Jay. He keeps moving until he stands right next to him. Jay doesn't notice his presence. His eyes are closed and his face serene as he listens to the performers sing. Kamden glances at the small space between the two of them. His heart thumping inside his chest. His fingers stretch outward slightly as if they are going to grasp Jay's own. His gaze slowly travels up and settles on Jay's face. His entire body sings and he can feel his cheeks warm. He observes the beautiful curve of Jay's jaw. The sharp point of his nose. The way his lips curl into a smile that sends sparks down his spine. The warm color of his skin where specks of the stars are splayed across his cheeks. Kamden drinks it all in with his eyes. Savoring it and wishing for more. He is the closest he's been to Jay in years. It's the one place that he's missed more than anything. And yet, at this moment, he can't help but feel as if nothing has ever changed.

———————

"Kamden," Jay hummed, "Sing with me..."

"I can't sing," Kamden stated. The two sat by side near a burning fire. It was pitch black out except for the soft twinkle of the stars and the shining orb of the moon. A few other Demon soldiers and allied Angels flit around the open area that they had designated as their campsite. It was a rather peaceful night compared to the disastrous morning they had. The sounds of crickets filtered through the air. A slight chill crept in as it grew later into the night. And even though the current situation was not ideal, there was this sense of calm that relaxed all of the muscles that had been overworked hours before. "Yes, you can!" Jay exclaimed. He started to sing, swaying back and forth. He rose from where he sat and gestured for Kamden to join him. His voice filled the air, attracting the attention of the entire group. Soft smiles appeared on all their faces, relishing in the sweet notes that Jay hit with ease. Kamden wasn't surprised. Jay was an amazing singer. He always had been. The passion behind every word. The expressions that his face would make. A voice of, for lack of a better term, an Angel. It was just another of the many things that Kamden loved about Jay.

The demon's chest warmed slightly as Jay continued to sing. His eyes locked on him. The flickering tendrils of the firing warming up his already beautifully warm skin. When he looked at him like this, it was as if he was singing only to him. As if he was singing for him. And Kamden felt that. This song. Those words. Everyone could hear it, but the true message is made only for him. Kamden began to rise from where he sat, but before he could there was a loud boom that shook the ground.

Leaves fell from trees while slumbering birds startled and took to the skies. The group all looked around in shock and surprise. "What's that!?" A voice called in horror. Kamden turned in the direction of the person who spoke. His eyes landed on a man whose arm was pointed at the sky. Kamden narrowed his eyes as he tilted his head up. Even with the pitch black sky, it wasn't hard for him to make out shining orbs of light that were headed right in their direction. "Get down!!!!" Kamden hollered, trying to reach Jay.

Before he could, the orbs landed right on their campsite. Exploding on impact and sending them all flying through the air. Kamden gritted his teeth as he slammed into a nearby tree. He crumpled to the ground and heaved loudly. He could feel blood trickling down his neck. His vision was blurred. His entire body ached and protested as he forced himself to his feet. He looked around, but struggled to make anything out. Smoke had filled their campsite. The sounds of whimpers and shrieks of pain covering the crickets chirps.

Kamden cursed under his breath as he pushed himself to his feet. He doesn't understand how this happened. How did they figure out where they were? They had wards set up. Protection. He shook his head. That isn't important now. He needs to find him. "Jay!" He shouted, hating the way his voice cracked and wavered. "Jay!" He pushed himself to start walking. His head whipped back and forth as he searched for his friend. He spotted his fellow Demons, allies who he helped to train, but not the prince. "Jay! Where are you!?" Kamden yelled, desperation and panic bubbling inside of him.

"Over here!!!" An unfamiliar voice called, "His Majesty is over here!" Kamden immediately broke into a run. He cut around other injured individuals. His own wounds were still burning as he strained his body. He could not be bothered though. He needed to get to Jay.

He maneuvered around what appears to be their tents before finding Jay. His heart dropped when he saw him. The young King was sprawled on the floor. A giant gaping hole where his chest should be.. His eyes drooped and his skin glistened with a layer of sweat. As if sensing the arrival of his friend, he turned to look in Kamden's direction. A somewhat loopy smile appeared on his face, "K-Kam..."

"Jay!" Kamden yelled as he rushed to his side and dropped to the floor, "Jay...look at me...don't fall asleep, Jay...Jay!" He gently shook the King, trying to keep him alert. His eyes widened as he scanned the wound. It barely could be considered one. It was too big to be a simple cut or injury. "I don't..." Jay whispered, "I don't think I'm going to..."

"Don't say that! Don't you dare say that!" Kamden shrieked, "You can't! You...you....you need to live. Medic! I need a medic! Goddamnit!" His head whipped around searching for the voice who had alerted him before. Whoever it was had clearly decided to leave. An action that infuriated Kamden. "It's okay," Jay said, bringing his friend's attention back

"No, it's not Jay!" Kamden grimaced, "You need to unite Heaven and Hell. We need you!"

"I will," Jay murmured, his eyes fluttering as he struggled to stay awake, "Just not in this life..."

"Jay!!!" Kamden screamed. His hands moved to cup Jay's cheeks. His touch was soft but desperate. His eyes became glossy as his entire body turned numb. He didn't know what to do. He was so lost. "I'm going to come back, Kam. I'll reincarnate," Jay whispered..

"You...you're going to..." Kamden whispered.

"You've protected me all these years, but I'm going to ask you to do it for just a little longer," Jay said, his eyes fully opening to meet his friend's gaze, "Please find me, Kamden. Watch over me until it's time..."

"I will," Kamden's voice cracked, "I promise you, I will." As he heard those words, Jay smiled for the last time as his eyes slid shut.

———————

Kamden leans against the wall of the alley. His entire figure is hidden by the shadows. His expression is unamused as he watches Jay cut through the narrow passageway. It's a shortcut to get back to his apartment that he frequents more often than not. It isn't unsafe per say, but the fact that it has to be labeled as such sort of highlights the fact that it is a rather shady location. Kamden doesn't like the fact that Jay keeps making his way down here. The man just isn't aware or even bothered by the dangers that could face him. Both mortal and immortal.

Just then, the same being clothed in white appears out of thin air. A long sword with a golden hilt gripped in his hand. His long blonde hair frames his pointed face. Ice blue eyes bare into Jay's back. His lips curl into a haughty smirk as he begins to race towards the unaware man. His sword swings into the air as he nears him and comes arcing down right at Jay's neck.

Before it can connect though, Kamden rushes forward. He grabs the sword and grips it with his hand. The shining blade doesn't even damage his skin, which now takes on a pale gray tone. The blood running through his veins becomes illuminated as he applies a light pressure against the sword. Cracks appear that quickly spiderweb outward. The weapon shatters then into a flurry of pieces, dropping to the floor one after another. The being in white stiffens and his eyes widen in shock. He looks at Kamden and hisses, "Demon..."

"Hello," Kamden states as he knees the figure in his gut before wrapping his hand around his neck. He grits his teeth as he squeezes tightly and brings him slamming into the side wall. "How dare you!?" The being wheezes, "I am a high Angel."

"Then, you should be protecting your King," Kamden retorts as he applies more pressure.

"He will never be my King!" The Angel grits his teeth. He musters up the strength to lift up the shattered blade and slam it into Kamden's shoulder. The young man hisses in pain. His grip on the Angel's neck loosens enough for the immortal being to escape. Rather than fleeing, he continues his mission. Kamden cocks his head to the side, admiring the man's tenacity and dedication to his cause. His fluorescent blood begins to trickle down his arm and drip from his fingertips at a steady pace. "So be it," Kamden says simply. Threads of deep red seeping into his eye. The brown shade of his iris glows as he clenches his blood covered hand into a fist. As he does, the tendrils of his blood come alive. They shoot forward and wrap around the Angel just as he is about to lay a hand on Jay. He yanks the Angel back without moving an inch. The blood sizzles as it presses into the immortal's skin. He shrieks as the blood starts to creep upwards and slip into his mouth. He makes a strangled sound before bursting into a bright flash of light.

When it clears, the Angel is completely gone. The only remains are the splatters of brightly colored blood that splatter outward on the ground. Kamden lets out a breath as he reaches for the sword still sticking out of him. His face scrunches up in pain as he tugs it out and tosses it to the ground. He straightens his body as he looks at Jay, who still walks to his apartment, blissfully unaware of what has just occurred. "Jay..." Kamden whispers underneath his breath, "One day...you'll remember...and even if you don't...I will. I'll remember enough for the both of us."

What do you think? Does it have potential to become a full-length AU? I had lots of fun writing it, so I would definitely be interested in turning it into something with multiple chapters. Please let me know if that is something you would be interested in. Thank you again to the person who gave me this suggestion and to all the others who have commented ideas for me. I do plan on writing more and will most likely be using some of the other suggestions in future fics. Please look forward to those. Until then, please vote, comment, follow me, add this story to your library, and check out my other fanfics here on Wattpad. Have a great rest of your day!
