A Flowered Soul
Hello! I am back with another one-shot. This one is in honor of SVT's upcoming Japanese single Fallin Flower. It's part of a challenge on Carat Amino where you need to screenshot a gif. From this gifs, I got Mingyu and orchids, so my story will center around these two. It's going to be pretty short, but I hope you enjoy it nonetheless.
Mingyu is just a normal guy. He lives like everyone else does. He wakes up and gets ready. He goes to work and eats lunch at 1. He walks back home with his friends at the end of the day and sometimes grabs dinner with them. He's just a guy. Nothing much. His life has always been straightforward. Easy. Some may even say mundane. Mingyu's happy with his life though. There's nothing bad about it. Nothing odd. Except for today. And the day after that. And this entire week. It's been weird. Mingyu woke up and right on his bedside table is a royal purple orchid. It had freaked Mingyu out. He had never put the flower there. He had rubbed his eyes and the flower was gone. He thought he was still just stuck in a dream, so he continued his morning routine as he normally would. The thing is the orchid appeared again as he was brushing his teeth. A single orchid lay in his sink just as he was about to spit. He frowned and blinked. The orchid disappeared. That's how the rest of his day went. He would see the orchid everywhere. But, he would shake his head or rub his eyes and it would be gone. Mingyu had no idea what was happening. It could be just because he wasn't getting enough sleep or maybe it's stress related. Something like this has never happened before. As the week continued, it got worse. The flowers started sticking around. Mingyu couldn't get them to go away. Everywhere he turned, there was an orchid. White, purple, pink, yellow, orange. Orchid after orchid. Sitting on his desk. Sitting on his seat on the bus. Growing out of the cracks in the sidewalk. Mingyu's entire life began to be swamped with these flowers. Mingyu had always been a fan of orchids before, but now he wished they would just die. That they would leave him alone. Instead of following him like the plague. It was like he was living a nightmare that he could never wake up from. He wanted nothing more than for it to stop. But, he had no idea how to make it stop. No one else seemed to see it except for him. He couldn't exactly go to the doctor and tell them that he's seeing flowers that no one else can see. They'll think he's nuts. Which in all honesty, he very well may be. He hid it from everyone. Including his friends. Albeit he's never been able to hide things from his friends. It all came out pretty fast. Mingyu walked into his friends' flower shop, Fallin Flower. He greeted Jihoon and Seokmin, who were busy preparing an arrangement for a customer. Mingyu wandered around the store, admiring the variety of flowers. He stiffens when he spots the orchids and starts to shake his head, but no matter what he does the flowers won't go away. "What the hell are you doing?" Jihoon asks, appearing in front of him. Mingyu looks up to Jihoon with a sheepish expression. "Nothing," Mingyu states.
Jihoon narrowing his eyes, "Seokmin!!! Mingyu is hiding something from us."
"Is he really?" Seokmin asks from where he stands at the cash register. Mingyu groans, of course they would know. His two friends know him better than anyone. They know when he lies. It's a miracle that he's been able to hide it so well to begin with. "It's no big deal," Mingyu says, "I would've told you if it was something major."
"Or you would just choose not to say anything cause you're scared we'll freak out," Seokmin states. Mingyu sighs and walks back to where his friend stands. "It's nothing," Mingyu states.
Jihoon huffs and walks over with orchids in his hand, "Your eyes popped out of their sockets when you saw these."
"Oh...they're actually real..," Mingyu mutters, trying to be as quiet as possible, so his friends don't hear. It doesn't do much cause Jihoon has always had good hearing. "Why would they not be real? We sell fresh flowers, Mingyu," Jihoon states.
"What's up with you? What aren't you telling us?" Seokmin asks.
Mingyu sighs, "Fine. I'll tell you, but you have to believe what I'm saying. I'm not going crazy or anything." The two nod their heads and give Mingyu their attention. "So, for the past few weeks I've been seeing things," Mingyu explains, "Everywhere I go, I see orchids. It's weird. When it first started, I would blink and they would just go away. Now, they don't. They just pop up anytime and anywhere. I don't understand why it's happening. It just is. And it's freaking me out..."
"Have you been getting enough rest?" Seokmin questions.
"Maybe, it's stress related," Jihoon says.
Mingyu shakes his head, "No. Things have been calm at work. Nothing crazy has been happening. There's no explanation for it." The three fall silent, thinking about what could be the reason behind all of this. "Seeing orchids?" Seokmin mutters, "That reminds me of something...a story eomma used to tell us when we were younger..."
Jihoon rolls his eyes, "Eomma's stories are complete nonsense."
"They're not! They can apply to real life!" Seokmin exclaims, "I carry the lesson from the Two Starfish tale with me every day."
"That story was about drowning starfish!" Jihoon shouts, "Starfishes can't drown!"
"Well, they make sense most of the time," Seokmin states.
Mingyu sighs, "Is there a story about seeing flowers?"
"Hm...I think so..." Seokmin says, "I think it's something about flowered souls."
"Flowered souls?" Mingyu questions.
Seokmin nods, "The tale goes that there are people with souls in the form of flowers. It's said that a few in the world have flowers linked to their souls. These people are special to our world. They brighten up rooms, they bring peace, and they are gifts. They bloom into magnificent people and the world shines better because of them. These souls each have a specific flower linked to them. The flowered souls never know what flower is their own. But, they find out only when they are about to meet the love of their life. They'll see the flower once in the beginning. And then every day. Until the day finally arises for the flowered soul to meet their forever soulmate." Mingyu listens to Seokmin's story with interest. His face flushes a little, thinking that this story could all be true. Maybe, he's a flowered soul. Maybe, he's going to meet his significant other really soon. "So, this might not be a bad thing at all. Seeing the orchids. It could just mean that I'm a flowered soul ready to meet their love," Mingyu says with a small smile. His spirits slowly lifting. Jihoon shakes his head, "Eomma's stories are just stories. You need to take it with a grain of salt."
"Shush, hyung," Seokmin says, "I'm sure it's true. Stories about love always are. It's so fitting for what's happening with you too. It makes perfect sense."
Mingyu nods, "Yeah, you're right. I was worrying about it for nothing. I'm going to meet the love of my life soon. How cool is that?"
"It's amazing! I'm sure that the love of your life will be extra special too! Orchids are known for being a symbol of love," Seokmin says. Mingyu beams at his words and his chest fills with pride. This is going to be great. Suddenly, the bell to the shops door rings as a customer rushes inside. The young man looks frazzled and he runs a hand through his hair. "I know you're closing in a few, but this is an emergency. I really need flowers! Could you please just wait for me before closing up?" The man pleads.
Jihoon nods his head and gestures to the flowers, "You can have a look around. If you need anything, we'll be right here." The man flashes him a thankful look before searching through the flowers. "Mingyu, why don't you start walking to the restaurant?" Seokmin says, "Jihoon hyung and I will catch up after we help this customer."
"Alright, if you're okay with that," Mingyu says.
Seokmin nods, "Go. Who knows, you might meet the love of your life on the way there." Mingyu grins and waves before exiting the flower store. As the door shuts, Jihoon lets out a sigh. "You know...I think you told the story wrong," Jihoon says.
Seokmin frowns, "Why would you say that?"
"When have eomma's stories ever ended happy? When have they ever involved love?" Jihoon questions, "All of her stories are depressing, even the Two Starfish one. One of the Starfish die!"
"How does the flowered souls story end then?" Seokmin fires back, "I think eomma just told you bad stories and she told me happy ones."
"I don't know and that's ridiculous. Why would she tell us different stories?" Jihoon huffs.
Seokmin shrugs, "Cause she likes me more?" Jihoon glares at Seokmin and slaps him on the shoulder.
----------------
The tale of the flowered souls is a story of special humans
The few in life who have souls that manifest as flowers
They are the best of our world
And that is why there are so few
These souls bloom as flowers do
But, they also die as flowers do
If not taken care of
The soul will wilt
Like a flower
It is said that when a flowered soul sees their soul
Doom is near
It will soon be the end for that person
As their flowered soul is dying
