A Family of My Own
Hi! I am back with a new one-shot for you all. I've recently been feeling the need to get rid of my older fics and ideas that I came up with so long ago that I just no longer feel any passion for them. So the next few one-shots I post will be the ones that I still have a lot of passion for and want to write. Hopefully they turn out well and you will enjoy them. Once I finish up all of the one-shot ideas I have written down, I think I am going to rebrand this book as my one-shots. Majority will still be romance, but it will be better if it just says one-shot book. Please look forward to the updated cover and more. With that out of the way, this one-shot all about family feels one and centered around the Kdrama Bulgasal. If you aren't familiar with it, I would recommend checking it out. It's an amazing fantasy themed show that is on Netflix. Okay enough of that, this fic takes place around episode 15 where Doyoon and Hwal are chatting. Let's go!
"After this is all over, you should go back to school," Hwal calls out to Doyoon. The bleached hair teen whips his head to look at the Bulgasal, who leans slightly against the car. "Do you think I should?" Doyoon questions, scratching the back of his neck sheepishly after being caught staring at the students exiting a nearby school.
Hwal nods, "Kids like you should be in school."
"Hm..." Doyoon hums under his breath, "Maybe..."
"You're going back, Doyoon-ah," Hwal states, "As your guardian, I'll make sure of it." Doyoon's eyes widen at those words. He stares at the Bulgasal with a questioning expression on his face. "You can stay with me while you're in school," Hwal states, "And you're welcome to stay after you graduate, but I expect you to go to college or at least get a job..." Doyoon rushes forward and throws himself at Hwal. The Bulgasal lets out a grunt as the blonde teen slams into his chest. Doyoon presses his face against his chest and wraps his arms tightly around him. "Thank you, appa," He murmurs quietly. Hwal stiffens instantly. His hand shakes as it slowly wraps around Doyoon's shoulder. His eyes flit back and forth as he tries to determine if he heard correctly or not. "Oh crap..." Doyoon gasps as he takes notice of Hwal's awkward nature. He slowly pulls away from the embrace and flashes the man a guilty smile. "Did you...call me appa?" Hwal questions, his voice quivering.
"Yes..." Doyoon says in a high pitched tone.
"Do you know?" Hwal asks. Doyoon slowly nods his head. Hwal lets out a breath as his chest aches. His vision becomes blurred as tears instantly appear in his eyes. His hand quivers as he reaches out to cup Doyoon's face. The teen flashes him a small smile, "Are you mad?" Hwal shakes his head. He opens and closes his mouth, trying to find the right words. "I'm...I'm just shocked," Hwal admits after a moment, "I never thought you would find out..."
Doyoon shrugs, "I'm not an idiot. I can see the things happening around me. The way you started acting when you found out that I used to be blind. The way Sangun noona would try to push you towards me during group dinners. The fact that Eultae took interest in me...the fact that all the monsters go after me and it would freak you out...the way you look at me with guilt and affection all at the same time...I knew I had to be someone from your past. And it just made sense that I would've been your son...I never had a home...I never knew what a family felt like, but for some reason the second that I started staying with you...I felt safe...I felt like I was back home." Those words are enough to push Hwal over the edge. Tears start streaking down his face and he lets out a strangled sound. Doyoon's eyes widen at the reaction as Hwal stumbles closer to him. The Bulgasal places heavy hands on his shoulders and squeezes tightly. His head shakes and his lips press into a firm line. "I'm sorry," Doyoon murmurs.
"For what?" Hwal questions, "This isn't your fault. It's mine...it's always been mine." The Bulgasal slowly begins to explain their past with one another. He describes the struggles that his wife in the past had to have children and the only one she was able to bear was blind. Hwal had blamed this on himself. He had viewed himself as cursed because of the marking of the Bulgasal. Hwal told Doyoon about why he used that as a reason to ignore his son, who still tried to connect with him even though he was such a horrible father. He explained how regardless of his actions, he wasn't able to save Doyoon in the end. He tells him that he was a failure. A horrible man who doesn't deserve to be called a father.
"Don't say that," Doyoon frowns, "It's not true."
"It is," Hwal says, "I let you down, Achan-ah..."
"Appa, listen to me, I don't remember my life back then," Doyoon states, "But, I know deep down that I would never have blamed you for what happened. I would never have been mad at you..."
Hwal shakes his head, "You should be. You should be furious with me."
"How can I? You did what you thought was best. You did what you did cause you were worried I would get hurt," Doyoon says, "Maybe you didn't show how much you cared, but Achan...I knew deep down that you did." Hwal lets out a shaky breath. He blinks to clear the tears from his eyes before looking at Doyoon. The blonde teen looks back at him with a sincere expression on his face. It makes the Bulgasal's heart twinge slightly. How could his kid be so warmhearted? Hwal lets out a dry chuckle before standing up straight. He reaches a hand up and rustles the teen's hair. Doyoon pouts slightly at the action as he swats away Hwal's arm. He smooths out his hair, "Would you...want to be my father again?"
"What do you mean?" Hwal questions.
"In another life," Doyoon states, "Do you want to be father and son again?" Hwal stares at the young man with a surprised expression. He never expected Doyoon to ask such a question. He's always wondered if he could be reunited with his son and wife in another life. A part of him didn't think it would ever be possible. After all the things he's done, did he even deserve to? "I...I would," Doyoon pipes up, pulling Hwall from his thoughts, "I want a life where we can live normally. Where you can yell at me for failing a test and cheer for me when I pass my driver's exam. I want to share my first drink with you and complain together when mom forces us to take a family photo to hang in our home...I want a chance to live like that with you." It's a beautiful image that Hwal can easily picture in his head. A moment that feels so far away and yet something that a part of him can't help but yearn for. He doesn't know if it is possible to have that sort of life. But, if by some miracle, he can, then he would want it.
I couldn't help myself! I just love father son moments like this. The relationship between on the characters in this Kdrama is just amazing and I couldn't help but push it just a bit farther with this short little rewrite. I always felt like the only thing missing was that moment for Hwal and Doyoon to be like father and son. And that is where this fic was born. Anyway, I hope that you enjoyed this one-shot and look forward to seeing more fics from me soon. Please vote, comment, follow me, add this story to your library, and check out my Kpop one-shots book before I meld it into this one. I hope you have a great rest of your day and I will see you all next time!
