The Last Dragons - Part One - Ice

July 7, 2018
Important info on this:
It was inspired by Shubble's Dragon Trials in CuteCraft. It's also Minecraft-based, and the dragons (and some of the other creatures) are based off of the dragons of the Ice and Fire mod. I completely mixed up the plot though, it's much more interesting than her dragon quest's storyline... or at least I think so. You can decide for yourself.

A enormous icy white dragon shrieked at the men surrounding her. They were trying to take her egg, her only child... the last ice dragon egg. Her mate had been killed already, but she was still fighting, and hell hath no fury like a mother whose child is threatened.

Suddenly, a new group of people entered her cavern. They were dressed in shimmering silver armor, and looked threatening, but she could tell that they were here to help. They smelt like dragons, and there was only one group of humans who smelt like that- dragonkin.

Dragonkin were humans who tried their best to protect and conserve the few remaining dragons. They were the only humans a dragon would allow to ride them, and the majority of them even understood dragontongue, although they were unable to speak it, as their vocal cords couldn't handle it.

She knew that they were the only hope for her baby, as she was mortally wounded. With a shriek, she shot a powerful ice blast at the few remaining dragon hunters.

She then said a single word to the dragonkin, "Come."

And they came over to her.

She nudged her egg over to them, and she looked the leader of the group in the eyes and told her, "This is the last ice dragon. Treat her well... if it's unsafe here, take her to the Valkryies. Give them that Aetherheart amulet- they'll know that you come by my request. If they ask, tell them that Froslynia sent you. And her name... it will be Frostleia. Keep her safe..."

And then she breathed her final breath. Seconds after she died, more hunters ran into her nest. The dragonkin had already hidden her egg, so the hunters just decided to go after them. They fled, and the leader, Lilia, decided that they should take the egg to the Valkyries immediately, as it would be much safer there.

The Valkyries were powerful warriors and they worshipped dragons. Once, when there were more dragons, Valkyrie queens had ridden on dragons. The Valkyries lived in a dimension known as the Aether, which they could access through a portal.

Luckily, the portal was relatively simple to make... they suspected that contacting the Valkyries would probably be much trickier. They quickly collected the items needed to build the portal, and then poured water on the frame to activate it.

With a bright blue flash, the frame was vaporized, and a rift in the sky appeared. It glowed blue onto the ice, shimmering and spitting small drops of water. The dragonkin quickly grabbed the amulet, and they leaped into the portal.

---

The Valkyries were patrolling the skies near their home on their amphitheres, when the leader of the patrol saw a bright flash in the sky, atop one of the golden clouds. She and the rest of the patrol swiftly flew over, and they saw a group of humans in silver armor, slowly falling through the cloud. The leader signaled to her warriors to catch the humans as they fell, and take them back to base. They quickly followed her instructions, and soon they were headed back to base with humans on the back of their amphitheres.

---

When they got to base, the humans bowed politely to the Valkyries, and laid their weapons on the ground. The eldest female pulled an amulet out of her armor, and asked something in the human language. Most Valkyries didn't speak the human language, so the commander called for a translator.

The human then repeated herself, and the translator translated it for the Valkyries, "We were sent here by the dragon Froslynia, to beg your protection for her egg and ourselves, as the hunters will kill any who have gotten in their way. This egg is the last ice dragon, her name is to be Frostleia."

"There is only one remaining fire dragon egg as well, but he is elsewhere. Please, assist us in saving the last of the dragon race," finished the translator.

"Translator, tell her that we will allow the females of her group to stay here. The men may go stay with our men, in the bronze dungeon's territory, for the Valkyries are ruled by a queen and we don't take well to men sticking around in our silver dungeon. The dragon shall be protected, for we are unable to refuse sanctuary to a dragon or child that is threatened, and this falls under both categories."

"We ask one thing of you though- we would like you to attempt to learn our language. It's rather bothersome to speak through a translator, and if you will be staying with us you should attempt to learn our speech and culture," answered the commander, and the translator quickly translated it for the humans, who agreed to the Valkyries' terms.

---

A few months later...

The female dragonkin, with their leader, Lilia, had stayed with the Valkyries for several months. The Valkyrie translator, Fengári, had been teaching them how to speak the language of the Valkyries, Elliniká. It was an ancient language, but beautiful in its own way. They were trying very hard to learn it, although it was hard for them to say some of the words.

Over time they had learned basic words and phrases, such as "Where is the bathroom?" and the polite Valkyrie greeting, "May all your enemies fall before you and your skies be filled with happiness." They had also learned that the Valkyrie language was very complex, and few who had befriended the Valkyries had been able to learn the entire thing.

They waited patiently for the egg to hatch, knowing that it would take a while, as dragons live for centuries, and their eggs take a long time to incubate.

---

A few years later...

The egg finally began to crack. It had been kept in a icy cold room, as ice dragons keep their eggs very cold, and was covered in a sheen of silvery frost, which hid the fractures for a little while. It didn't block the chirrups coming from the baby dragon as she slowly broke through the shell though, and those brought the dragonkin over immediately. They entered the icy room to find the egg rocking back and forth while tapping noises came from within, and small chirps could be heard coming from the hairline fractures in the eggshell.

Finally, after a few hours, the tiny dragonet made her way out of the egg. She was an icy blue-white, with small silvery scales surrounding her eyes like eyeliner.

Quietly the dragonkin's leader whispered, "Welcome to the world Frosleia. It's good to finally meet you little one."

A bit of interesting info

Most dragons understand the human language, but are unable to speak it for the same reason humans can't speak dragontongue.

The Valkyries are a powerful race of female warriors, led by a queen. They have wings, but their wings are not strong enough to carry them in full flight, and are instead used for gliding from sky island to sky island in the Aether. Their amphitheres are much faster, hence why they are used for transportation.

If you're wondering what amphitheres are, go look at the chapter about the creatures of ice and fire.

The Aether has a unique quirk, if someone falls into the open sky below the islands, they will fall through the barrier between the human world and the Aether. They'll still have some trouble in they don't have a way to glide or float though- they'll find themselves falling from the sky. That's an actual feature of the Aether mod.

Also, the Aether portal closed behind them, that's why it's a rift in the sky. It stays open for a very limited time, or at least the one in this story does. It's my story, so don't argue with me.

The Valkyrie language is Greek, and I used google translate so don't come for me if I got it wrong. I'm not taking Greek as my language, I'm taking Latin!
