Who wants to know why Alex wanted to deal with Shadow herself? Well, she created him. He was originally made to be a shadow version of Blueberry so he always had a friend, but half way though the spell, Alex accidentally burnt her finger in the potion and started swearing in French out of frustration. That's how Shadow was born.

Needles to say, the spell went wrong and Alex (accidentally) created a new demon.
