Chapter 3

"This looks great, Miyu!" Kaori exclaimed, clapping her hands. She surveyed the operator's room, approving of the new layout.

"You think so?" Miyu asked.

"Definitely. Now that most of your things are unpacked, you can head out to get to know the area!" The green-haired Navi excitedly opened a map of her town on the PET's screen. "I marked important places down, like the school, the park, and the subway! It's a small place, but I figured marking them might make it just a tad-bit easier to make your way around."

"Subway?" Miyu blinked. "Here?"

"Yes! It's right down the street too!" Kaori added, buzzing with excitement. "We can get a ticket and visit the shopping district!"

As Miyu's eyes scanned the map, a small smile grew on her face. Kaori must really want her to get out and try to enjoy herself.

"Alright. Let me get ready, and we can head out," she said, setting her PET down. Kaori nearly burst out of its screen to hug Miyu.

"Yay!" Kaori pumped her fists up in the air. "Exploration! Adventure!"

"It's just a walk," Miyu giggled. She undid her bun, her hair falling down as she got her brush. Brushing her hair, she walked to her closet to get dressed. She changed out of her comfy pajamas, into her usual outfit. A white sleeveless turtleneck, with a simple blue skirt along with a black belt that had a butterfly on it. It was a simple outfit, but good for a sunny day. She put her hair back up.

After getting Kaori's approval on the outfit she chose, Miyu quickly put a few belongings in her bag before slinging it over her shoulder. She picked up her PET and headed out of her room. Passing her dad watching TV on the couch, she slipped off her indoor shoes and put on her black slippers.

Her dad looked over as she reached for the door. "Heading out?" He asked, and Miyu nodded.

"I'm going to check out the area," she said.

"How long?"

Miyu adjusted her bag's strap. "Maybe a couple of hours?"

After checking his watch, her dad rested his arm back on the top of the couch. "Have fun."

Miyu took her cue to leave, closing the door behind her. It was a hot summer day, and the one solemn tree on her block provided virtually no shade. Miyu regretted not bringing a hat, or at least sunscreen, but it seemed like heading back inside would suck out the motivation to leave in the first place. Directly cross the street from her home was a blue roofed house next to a pink roofed house. The girl couldn't help but stare at the two as she walked down the sidewalk. It was so cliche, like Romeo and Juliet. She wondered who lived there. Did they get along? Her thoughts were distracted by the sound of kids laughing. She turned to face it, seeing the park was right across the street. She kept her hands on the strap of her bag as she looked around, absorbing the scenery. There were more streets than she was used to, and she doubted there was a lake like the one from her old town nearby. Raising one of her hands to protect her eyes from the sun, she faced forward again to look at the park. There were a few children there, but they weren't her age. Not in the mood for little gremlins, she checked the map Kaori made her. The school was only a block away, and she decided she might as well check it out.

She crossed the street, watching the kids play in the park as she made her way to the school. There were more trees here, and Miyu sighed happily in the cool embrace of the shade. Something caught her eye, and she stopped short under one of the trees. Water from a fountain glistened under the sun. She stared at it for a good minute. A fountain? At a kids park? What kind of place is this? A "wow" escaped from her lips as she looked around, wondering if there would be more bizarre things to see. Across the street from her was a little shop, with a large sign that read "HIGSBY'S" in red letters. But what caught Miyu's eyes was the giant house looming behind it. She gawked at it, wondering who could possibly live there. Maybe some rich business owner? She remembered passing by a few buildings that looked pretty important, but she couldn't remember what they were for. Snapping out of her stupor, she faced forward again where she could see the school. Seeing as it was only half a block away and reenergized from the tree's shade, she quickened her pace to a light jog. What a curious town this was turning out to be.

It was a short walk but the heat was already starting to get to Miyu again, and she longed for the shade. The coffee shop would definitely be her next destination, for a nice, cool drink. She looked at the school's entrance, blocked by a gate. A gate! She thought to herself. Her old school didn't have a gate like this. It was easily climbable, and she used to watch Sol do so to play on the courts with his friends. Miyu was always too scared to follow but she didn't like being alone, and ended up watching most of the time.

Wrapping her hands around the steel bars on the gate, she peeked through them. No one was there of course; it was summer, and kids were desperate to use the finite time they had without classes. A fountain in the center of the main entrance caught her eye, her mouth gaping open as she watched the water flow down from the small spout to the large white stone bowl below. Another fountain? And in the school? What kind of rich neighborhood is this? She sucked in a breath. Rich kids? She's never met them. Immediately she pictured them being cruel and snobby, like in the dramas she watches. How scary...

Watching the water reminded her of how thirsty she was going to be if she stood in the heat much longer. She let go of the gate, taking a step back. Miyu was already nervous about starting at a new school, but now the things that could go wrong just seemed to be getting worse. Reconsidering if heading to the school had been a good idea, she quickly turned around and went down the path she came from. She clutched onto her bag strap, trying not to snap it off. In a school full of mean rich kids, what could she do? She'd just keep quiet and bring no attention to herself. Stealth mode. Incognito.

Of course, she could just be overreacting.

After passing her house again, a small building at the corner of the block caught her eye. Could that possibly be the subway? She's always imagined them being...bigger. Reaching the building, she peeked at where a door would be. Instead, it was a stairway down underground. The thought that subways were below ground had completely escaped her mind, and she felt a little silly for not thinking so before. Placing her hand on the rail, she made her way down the steps. Reaching the smooth tiled floors below, she looked around the brightly lit room.

"Welcome to the Metroline," a man in a uniform said. Startled, Miyu gave him a quick smile before looking around for a clue of what to do. She noticed a froggy can and thought it was cute, though it stood out in the plain room. There wasn't a single other person inside, save for a woman and her child, going through what looked to be a pathway blocked by a waist-high plastic door.

That's right, I need a ticket, she thought, quickly heading to a machine which she guessed would be where she would get one. She read the screen, asking whether she was an adult or minor. Hesitantly, she clicked "minor". For a few seconds, she watched the loading circle spin around. Her eyes widened as a little paper printed out, and she took it. I guess minors don't pay, she thought. Smiling giddily, she used her ticket to go through the pathway. Her first subway ride! Or "Metroline" ride, as the uniformed man had called it. She walked down the cold floors, enjoying the sound of her shoes clacking against the tiles. Hearing the sound of the train approaching, she leaned forward to watch it approach through the dark tunnel. The loud, unpleasant sound of the brakes as the train slowed to a stop made Miyu scrunch her face up, and she felt relieved when it stopped. The doors slid open, and only a few people came out of the crowded cars. Miyu stepped into the car, glancing around. There were no seats open, so she followed the example of other people holding a handle that was lowered from the roof of the train. Doing so reminded her of that really cute scene in that one drama-

The doors slid closed and the train jolted forward, making Miyu reposition herself to stop from falling over. The ride soon became smooth, with the occasional bump. In the crowded car, Miyu shuffled around to give herself and others as much space as possible. After she felt satisfied, she stood and enjoyed the ride. People would get on and off at every stop, and she wondered how many times they've ridden on the Metroline in their lives.

The train finally reached her destination, and she stepped out into a different subway. This one, much more crowded than the last. She slowly made her way through the people with a dozen "excuse me"s and a hundred "sorry"s. Making her way out of main station, she reached stairs that led up to the city. She went up, seeing the crowded streets full of cars and sidewalks full of people. Kids and adults made their way through the city, and Miyu straightened her back a little as she headed into the crowd. She wasn't a "farm girl" or a "country bumpkin", but she wasn't used to so many bodies crammed onto the sidewalks. She weaved through the crowd, stumbling a bit. Finally getting her balance, she looked around the city. Large commercial billboards and tall company buildings surrounded her, separated by rows of shops and restaurants. Miyu wondered if she could ever find the coffee shop by herself. She reached into her bag to pull out her PET, but stopped after hearing a commotion behind her.

"Coming through!" She heard a voice yell, turning to see who it was. She almost wished she hadn't, because the sight of a boy dashing through the sidewalks on rollerblades heading straight towards her nearly gave her a heart attack. The black-haired girl squeaked as she stepped to the side, clutching onto a light pole as the boy blew past her. Timidly, she looked to where he ran off, his bright orange vest standing out in the cool shade of the buildings. People scrambled out of his way as she had, and she was amazed by how quickly he went around people who were too slow to react. She let go of the pole as she watched him disappear in the crowd, with only one question burning in her mind.

Do people even wear vests anymore?

They were fairly out of fashion. She could only picture people who go camping wearing them. Or her old PE teacher. What a strange kid. Well, dashing through the streets didn't help his case either. Miyu brushed her skirt down, trying to recollect her thoughts.

"Ah, that's right," she murmured, pulling out her PET. Kaori appeared on the screen, bouncing up and down.

"So? How's it going? Where are you? Have you seen the school? What's it like? Meet anyone?" Kaori asked, one question after another. Miyu was going to get a headache if she kept rambling on.

"It's going okay. I'm in DenSan Town. I saw the school and it was... interesting," Miyu paused, trying to remember the other questions. "Um... I didn't meet anyone but this weird kid just went dashing down the sidewalks on rollerblades. Wearing an orange vest."

Her Navi twisted her short hair around her fingers.
"What's wrong with vests? Was he running from something?"

Miyu almost groaned at the new questions. "They're out of style, if they ever were in it to begin with. And it seemed like he was running to something."

"Really? Wh-" Kaori was abruptly cut off my Miyu waving her hand in front of the screen and shaking her head.

"Ah-ah-ah-ah-ah, no, no more questions, please," she begged. "I just wanted to see if you could get me directions to the café."

Kaori giggled. "Sorry," she said, searching for directions. Pulling it up on a separate window, she giggled again.

"What?" Miyu's eyes furrowed, suspicious. "What's so funny?"

"The café is behind you, Miyu."

Miyu spun around to see that the coffee shop had indeed been behind her. Her face flushed a light pink as she headed towards the door. She pushed it open, the smell of coffee wafting out. It was a little hot inside, but a big improvement from the heat of the sun. Stepping inside, she looked back at Kaori.

"One more thing," she said. "Where's the arcade?"

Kaori quickly searched the direction. "Three blocks down, if you exit the coffee shop and go left."

"Thanks Kaori," Miyu managed a smile, still a little embarrassed.

"Anytime," Kaori chirped. "Have fun!" And with that, she turned the PET off. Miyu tucked it back into her bag as she got in line, looking at the menu. No boba, but maybe a Frappuccino would be nice.

After getting her drink, Miyu headed down to the arcade. She fiddled with her drink as she walked, hoping they allow drinks in the arcade. Otherwise, she'd have to chug an entire Frappuccino. It wasn't exactly ladylike, and worst of all it would give her a massive brain freeze. She slowed her pace down as she reached the building. Taking a peek through the windows, she sipped her drink as she watched kids play games and net battle. Miyu stared as she watched two boys fight against each other, the intensity more than what she was used to.

She'd only occasionally battle other people. Other than that, it was just her a Sol. He never gave much effort, and yet he always beat her. Even so, Kaori was always giddy to fight again. "This is the one!" She would say. It almost never was. But the few times they'd won, Miyu felt extremely happy. Oddly, it was a feeling she never got from anything else. Too bad I never win, though, she thought to herself, taking another sip of her drink before heading inside the arcade.

Maybe she ought to stick with bots for now.

-Author's Note-
Hey, here's chapter three and I even have Miyu and Kaori's designs! Woo

Staring off with Miyu, I labeled her outfit if you wanted more information.
I wanted to keep outfits as simple as possible, but fashion is a big part of Miyu's personality. So, I wanted to make it a little more "fashionable", including giving her a winter outfit.
The butterfly on her belt is her incorporation of her Navi's mark in her outfit. The same goes with the bow on the back of her coat, and I tried to make it as "butterfly like" as possible.
I also figured she's try to match winter tones for her winter outfit, and I tried incorporating that into her clothing as well.

As for Kaori, I struggled designing her.
I wanted it to be butterfly based and I tried my best making her outfit as "butterfly like" as possible without making it look like cloth.
The outfit is supposed to be in the shape of a butterfly's wings, outlined with black, like the feature most butterflies have.
Her helmet is also inspired by Vesper Woman with a mixture of butterfly features.
Her boots also try mimicking the wings of a butterfly.
Also I meant to add the detail that her fingers have black tips but I forgot forgive me,,,
As for her special weapon I'm considering something butterfly related, such as a form of butterfly knife. Or butterfly shuriken. Idk.
If you have any ideas, please, feel free to offer them.

So yeah, only chibi, but I hope I can draw a regular image of them another time.
Have a nice day guys
Bai-bai
