I thanked Jasper and let him get back to his work, my mind still racing. Amanda physically gave me wine and a pie... how was she not real? And what about that guy downstairs? Nothing here made sense.
I walked back into my room to see Helena folding dark clothes. Her fingers were stained purple.
"I figured I could help fold but not the whites. I'm a smurf." She held up here blue and purple fingers and wiggled them. I laughed and grabbed a white skirt.
"We need to go to the store and buy some of that scrubbing bubbles stuff. Your wall is stained light purple, but I got most of it off."
I put the skirt away. "Okay. Let's go out to lunch now, then we will head to the store. We never did get to catch up." Helena set the jeans she just folded down and faced me, nodding. This time I grabbed my wallet, and any other valuables.
We walked out and I tossed the room keys to a day dreaming Jasper, who nearly fell off his chair when they hit them in the face. We giggled like a bunch of school girls and walked out.
We hopped into Helena's car, which was conveniently in a handicap parking spot. There was a paper hanging from the mirror, which showed the handicap symbol. Helena looked around before a pair of crutches showed against the wall. She grabbed them and placed them under her arms.
"Don't you need a ca-" I look down and there is already a cast on her ankle.
"Nice."
We hopped into the car... well, I did. Helena more wobbled into the passenger seat. We headed down to the pizza place, Juliano's, the place we were going to go in the first place.
When we got there I pulled into a handicap spot and I got out. I headed around the car to help Helena out, but when I got halfway around, a heard someone shouting. I turned around to see an older lady, about in her late 30's, storming towards me.
I stood frozen as she ran up to me. "What are you doing!! Parking in handicap?!? You look perfectly fine to me!" She stood there, hands on her hips, as I rounded the car to the passenger side. I slowly opened the door and gave a hard glare at the woman, who was glaring daggers back at me.
Helena hobbled out and thanked me. Her belly was now very round, making her look around 7 months pregnant. She looked at the woman, whose face had now turned beat red and was looking down at her feet.
"I'm sorry mam, is there a problem?" Helena held back a smirk as the woman muttered.
"I-im sor-ry.. I did-n't know yo-u we-were in the the car." The woman looked down again and practically ran back to her car.
Helena broke into a laugh and looked at me.
"Nice. She was so embarrassed" I let out a small laugh and we walked into the building. There was music playing and it was very lively, and the smell of garlic bread and pizza filled the air.
A waitress grabbed two menu's and sat us right next to the exit. She kept glancing at Helena's belly, but I could understand if she didn't want to ask if she was pregnant.
"What would you guys like to drink?" Abby asked as I read her name tag.
"Uhm, I would love a Pepsi... Helena?" Helena looked through the menu and pointed to a picture.
"Root beer would be great!" Helena said. Abby chuckled and smiled.
"Okay. I'll bring those right away. I remember, my old best friend loved Pepsi. Practically all she drank." Abby scribbled down on her notepad and left.
I sat there and looked down at my menu, suddenly growing hot. Helena glanced up from her's.
"What's wrong Em?" Helena asked, setting her menu down. She placed her hand over mine.
"I loved Pepsi when I was a kid, and Abby always teased me about it..." Helena let out a small gasp.
"Maybe she doesn't recognize you. Just keep quiet." I nodded and we skimmed through the menus.
Abby came back with our drinks. She pulled one straw out of her pocket and gave it to Helena, but not one to me. As she took Helena's order, I looked closer at her. She had cut her hair into a somewhat pixie cut and had become a makeup master.
Her contour was beautiful and her eyeliner was on point. She had gotten so much better! She could barely put on eye shadow before. But no matter how much makeup she wore, I knew it was her. And she knew it was me.
I always hated straws, never used them. So when Abby would grab us drinks, she never gave me a straw. She knew it was me. I sat there silently, trying to control my breathing as Helena finished up her order.
She turned to me. "What about you Emily?" I froze, but then started to mutter my order out to her. When I looked back up she was studying me, then wrote down my order.
"Well, having a child myself, I can tell you, mam, that they will be OBSESSED with Hide and Seek, just don't let them play with the wrong people. My Alexia almost broke a bone..." Abby sighed and let out a light laugh before leaving our table.
Helena and I stared at each other. We didn't need words in this situation. We could be in danger. We tried to enjoy the rest of our meal in peace though, and we talked about my life with Violet.
Back At Home
I laid on the bed as Helena continued to scrub the shower wall. It was coming off a lot easier now. I thought of what Abby had said and that phone call I got in the car.
It didn't make sense. The old man had to have made the call, he was holding a phone when Jasper saw him. And they lady screamed. Maybe the man was the one saying help, or the man took it off of the woman.
Either way, there would have been fingerprints on it.
Abby had talked about Hide and Seek... maybe to scare me. We knew it was each other. But maybe she didn't remember Helena. Maybe she did.
I looked across my room to find a cardboard box I still didn't throw away. I got out of my bed and walked over to the box. Helena started humming a tune, and it sounded vaguely familiar.
I folded the boxes flaps inward to see a word was scribbled in with sharpie. Weirdly, this was red sharpie, not black. I squinted my eyes and read what it said.
"No, you didn't pack this. I did." Underneath the sloppy lettering was a small little note. "It's from Amanda" with a little heart written next to it.
My face grew red as I never opened this box. I remember distinctly reading every box before opening it up. I looked inside again.
3 bottles of wine and a note.
Get drunk tonight. You're not going to want to hear what will happen next.
I pulled out the three red wine bottles, baffled. Nothing was in there when I saw it. But kind of like Abby's shirts, I couldn't pass up the drinks.
I pulled them out and stuck them into a mini fridge by my bed. I took the box and went into the lobby. I went into the trash room, folding the box back up, and stuck it into recycling.
When I got back in the room Helena was rounding the corner. She raised her eyebrows, and left. I knew that she was going to be back soon, we had little signals we sent each other Abby and Mr. Harmon.
I laid on my bed and turned my phone off. I closed my eyes and thought about me and Jasper as a kid as I fell asleep.
-----
I woke up startled as I heard rattling coming from the side of my bed. I rubbed my eyes and sat up. I turned and figured to see Helena, but she wasn't here.
Instead, the so-called Amanda stood there, pouring wine into a glass. She turned and handed it to me.
"Drink as much as you can. Be drunk, pass out. Because tonight you won't want to see the visitor that will come through the door."
