Lunch Date With Lena Luthor
Scrambling down the busy crowded road, I fight the urge to fly at ultra super speed to make sure I'm not COMPLETELY utterly late.
Who sets up a meeting at 11:30 in the morning!?
Rich people, that's who. The snarky annoyed part of my sleep-deprived brain mumbled.
The date for the meet-up had been decided by Lex weeks prior. But he'd been pushing it back and forth constantly.
But finally he'd managed to stick to a date and MY dumb ass only slept through the whole thing.
The wasn't much for me to do as I apparently classified as something called "unemployed". Coined to me by Wally, to which he got swiftly hit in the head and elbowed in the stomach by Artemis and Dick respectively.
I'd brought up the topic to later Clark, just to have something to do. And Clark when immediately blue in the face from worry. What if I got exposed? What if I didn't blend in? what if an evil villain figured out my identity and targeted my place of work!?
Louis promptly pointed out to him that that was HIS biggest fears. Not mine.
She continued to sip her hot tea and kept a vigilant eye on Clark as he continued to list a million other reasons why it was a bad idea. All of which Louis shot down and turn to me and tell me to go for it and do some job hunting. Giving me a bunch of places I might be interested to look into with a wicked wink as her man proceeded to have a meltdown on the spot.
I narrowly avoid colliding with the front bumper of the taxi that barely stopped at the red light that just turned as I continued to sprint for dear life to the rendezvous point.
My mind goes back to wondering as I fasted through the list of options Louis had presented to me. A lot of them were promising, but none of them were as interesting as the one my friends had.
M'gann was a counsellor for kids, Wally works with the police department as a mechanic and backup forensics specialist, Zatanna was a world-famous magician, Barbara was a highly revered librarian, Artemis was a professor at a university, and Dick was a private investigator/detective! How!???
When did they have time to do all that AND STILL BE HEROES!? Especially Dick and Artemis!? I did NOTHING all day and still can barely keep up with this superhero shit!!
"Kara?"
My mind snapped as it came to attention at the sound of my name coming from an unfamiliar voice.
I scan the thinning crowd for the point where my name was called, and could see the bald head of anyone I recognized.
But my name had been called by a woman, not a man.
I quickly scan the endless flow of heartbeats passing me, and none seemed familiar.
Dammit! Swinging around frantically, I hold back the small side of me that wanted to panic from being alone in an unfamiliar place when a soft dainty pale hand rose up above the sea of confusion and waved to me.
"Kara Kent?"
My eye focused down to the point where a tiny woman who looked too frail to be sitting upright smiled at me from her seat outside a quiet upscale pastry shop.
"He....llo?" I cautiously say to the unknown woman.
I see her struggle to lean forward, but extremely stretches out an arm to me.
I give her a weird look till I looked down and froze.
Through my supervision, I could see that she completely lacked the ability to use anything in her body from the waist down.
And there was the more obvious sign of her sitting in a wheelchair.
I swiftly walked closer to her, instantly pushing her hand back so she didn't strain herself.
"Oh, no, no! Please don't! you don't have to..." I still didn't know who she was.
Her face looked like no one I personally knew, and she didn't look related to anyone I knew either, as she didn't resemble anyone I knew either.
Her shiny blonde hair practically glowed in competition with her bright bubbly smile she fixed on me.
"I'm sorry," I immediately say as I sat next to her, "I have no idea who you are..."
Instead of looking offended as I expected, the girl simply giggled at me as if my confession was adorable or cute to her in some way.
"That's understandable. Not many people know what I actually look like," she brings out her light purple purse that was resting on her lap and pulls out a card and hands it to me. "We tend to keep my public image on the DL."
I cautiously take it, remembering Dick's hard lesson to be careful of anything and anyone, and look down at the print.
~Lena Luthor~
"NO FU-FREAKING WAY!!" I exclaimed, trying to keep the profanity to a minimum because Dick was severely influencing me in the worst way possible.
Lena continued to giggle again, her hair bouncing on her shoulder as she laughed.
"It's true."
I eyed her utterly bewildered.
"Prove it!" I could help but blurt.
"HOW!? Do you require a blood test!?"
"Yes. Please. I'd also like a DNA test too."
Lena's initial light laughter turns completely into a deep-bellied cackle.
If only she knew I was half joking.
I more comfortably sat back on my plastic seat padded with cushions, setting my small black handbag down on the edge of the table so it took up as little space as possible.
I wore wide-edged bell bottom jeans with a cute flowery yellow crop top with string-tied arms that I tied in a crisscross pattern around my back.
I cross my legs under the table and leaned forward to make Lena feel more comfortable to sit further back in her wheelchair and not stretch forward on my behalf.
She was the first person I've ever interacted with who was...disabled? crippled? I internally panicked at not knowing how to address her. I didn't want to have another "accidental homophobia" incident again because believe it or not, Krypton didn't have people who weren't...100% perfect?
I slowly came to the dreaded realization that maybe that was why my home planet imploded in on itself.
I made a mental note to ask Dick later for the appropriate way to address Lena, or people like her in general.
Now I could ask Lena herself, seeing as she was sitting literally 2 feet in front of me. But we just met and that seemed like something beyond rude to do.
Pushing all my anxiety-inducing thoughts to the back of my mind, I leaned even further forward on the table and sweetly asked.
"Sooooo, where is the man of the hour?"
"Eeeeiiiihhh..." Lena made a regretful sound.
"Oh no..."
At that sudden moment, I get a text message from Lex asking me to postpone the date as usual. But...the message was from 2 days ago!?
"What the-!?"
"Yeaaaah, sorry about that." Lena apologized.
"What are you apologizing for???" I asked her.
"I hacked into my brother's communication to delay his message from reaching you because I was just so sick and tired of him postponing our meetup dates! I really wanted to meet you and the blue balls were...killing...me..." Lena's words trailed off as if she just realized what she was saying out loud.
"Oh God, I sound like a psychopath." Lena dropped her head in her hand.
"Honestly? That's not even the top ten crazy things the people in my life have done." I admitted to make her feel better. "You should SEE what my friends are willing to do to prove a point..."
I was still lowkey pissed at the kryptonite stunt Dick pulled.
I tried to lean even further forward on the table, until Lena planted her whole hand on my face and shoved me back into my seat forcefully.
"I appreciate you trying to make me feel comfortable, but you're dangerously threading into condescending territory." Lena sassily warned.
"I-I I didn't mean it! I'm sorry-"
"It's fiiiiine," Lena sang to me.
I looked down at my lap and began tapping the tips of my two index fingers together awkwardly.
"You are adorable!" Lena complimented, leaning her head on her arm as she placed her elbow on the table.
I couldn't hide my blush and smiled dorkishly at her.
"I'm guessing you've never met many disabled people back in the country am I correct?"
I didn't like the tone of the way she said country. As if she knew more than she should along with her brother. Or I could just be reading too much into it as she could mean something else entirely, with how she'd set up her sentence.
Were people who lived out in the country not usually disabled?
Wait a minute-
"Ah! Disabled! Is that what I'm supposed to call you!?"
I got shot a couple filthy looks as I'd spoken a little too loudly and excitedly for the type of question I was asking. And I quickly clasped both hands over my mouth in shame and embarrassment.
Lena on the other hand almost doubles over her wheelchair in laughter.
She barely manages to get her composure after a moment and then proceeds to educate me on the proper ways to address people with disabilities.
How some people are fine with it being called out, and others are a little more sensitive and require more gentle wording around them.
Some people don't mind being stared at, others think it rude.
"I personally don't care how anyone sees or perceives me. Just treat me as an equal human being and we're all good," Lena says as she spreads open the slit in her white skirt to show off her immobile legs more.
"Can you please hide your shrivelled up decrepit legs lady!? We're trying to eat here! No one wants to see those corpse body parts!!" an annoyed-sounding guy yelled at us from two tables away.
I picked up my plate to toss at him, but Lena grabbed my wrists to hold me back.
"No need to be so physically obvious. We can get him back with our words..." Lena softly whispers to me as she lowers down my hand.
That man got super lucky. I was about to split his skull in half right then and there.
Lena then smiles sweetly at the rude man and staples her fingers together, resting her shin on top of it and never breaking eye contact. She pushed her hips forward so her legs revealed more prominently through the skirt slit.
"Dear kind sir, I'm sorry that my crippled body, offends your eyesight so. It is my fault after all that I became this way. God gave me options and I chose not to have working legs." Lena's words blazed a path for all who would listen. And her unwavering eye contact let all who heard know exactly whom she was speaking to, and who deserved all their scorn.
Angry eyes flew to the man, who visibly began to sweat and pull at his collar.
"It's not really my fault, you see!" He desperately tries to defend himself. "It's just, this is a place where people gather to eat! No one likes to see unsightly things while they eat!!"
"Well, if you hadn't been staring at me and my friend nonstop ever since we got here, maaaaybe you won't have seen any unsightly things!?" Lena openly boasts next. "Would you say the same thing about if someone with a facial disfigurement? Are people who just aren't conventionally attractive or perfect just allowed to go out in public because other people can't mind their own business and not look at things that have nothing to do with them!?"
The man shot up from his seat, and quickly walks away from the scene of the crime with his eating partner closely in tow.
I bunch of people began to clap for Lena, and the waitress comes to tell us that our order was on the house.
I internally giggle at that. If only they knew they were giving free stuff to the uber-rich.
When the clapping died down and our order was delivered, I look up at a confident Lena and said the only thing that came to mind.
"Slay!"
"Ahahahahaha!!"
It felt so weird to connect with someone so swiftly and easily.
I'd only met Lena 20 minutes ago, but it already felt like we'd known each other for years.
Is this what it's meant when people say you had chemistry with someone?
It felt like Lena and I really did have a lot of chemistry, and I liked that.
Being friends with Lex's sister made me feel more connected to his world.
The images of Dick and Lex flash through my mind, and I'm suddenly torn between the two again.
I've now met both of their families (in some capacity or another, seeing as Dick family was larger than the states of New York and New Jersey combined), and it all when beyond great.
Well, except for Bruce. But I've elected to not count him. Bruce Wayne seems to tolerate me just fine, Batman is a whole other nightmare.
Back to more desirable people, Dick and Lex.
Bruce was fine, for some people, but for me? His personality ruined everything else.
Back to Dick and Lex, I was once again flip-flopping between the two.
Dick was something comfortable, familiar, but was never going to be an option. Lex was dangerous, mysterious, and could burn me beyond belief if things go even slightly wrong.
Both their families seem reasonable fine, sane, and stable.....more Lex's family than Dick's. But Dick's family was quirky so I'll allow it.
"But can you believe that, though!?"
My thoughts slam back down to earth.
"Huh, what!?"
"Oh sorry, that was a massive topic shift," Lena says. "But the story literally just dropped."
She turn her phone to me to read the news that had popped up on it.
"Weren't you at an event a few days back with my brother that he hosted with Bruce Wayne?"
"Uh...yeah," I absently answered as I took her phone from her.
"Apparently there was a spy there who botched a mission to exchange top secret information, like nuclear codes big. And his murdered body for failing the mission just got found."
My body goes ice cold.
Her phone almost slips from my fingers as Lena quickly leans forward to grab it from my hands.
"Bestie, careful! That's the latest iPhone!!"
"I-i-i...." my brain refused to correctly function.
"I know, it's so scary to think of being in the same room with such a dangerous person!" Lena says, completely misreading why I was so shocked.
Her face frowns at her phone again, "Oh God there's more."
My frantic eyes dart up at her, asking her questions my lips could not.
"He seems to have a family back in his home country, and they might be in danger as well!!"
"WHAT!?"
